Chapter 1
Hi guys! So... first chapter!
Mollie awoke to the sound of screeching metal.
"Where am I?" she asked aloud, without an answer. Mollie suddenly realized, I can't remember anything! Why can't I remember anything! A single thought floated through her head, My name is Mollie.
The rest of the things I should remember, my family, my life, the world, Mollie couldn't remember anything about it. When she stood up and started to pace, she fell down. Mollie then realized her surroundings. She was enclosed in some type of metal box, and it was moving. 'Like an elevator...' she thought. Knowing it would be better to just wait it out, she leaned back against the wall of the box.
After what seemed to be at least two hours, the box lurched to a halt. Looking up, Mollie saw a blinding light, and it started to expand. Not knowing what was happening, I hid behind a crate. I wouldn't be noticeable to anyone above. Suddenly, I heard many voices erupt at once.
"Who is he?"
"I can't see anyone!"
"The shank must've klunked his pants and hid." "Must be a shuckfaced coward."
Everyone was silenced when someone entered the box. I peered out from my hiding spot to see a boy staring at me. "It's a girl!" He exclaimed in a thick accent. The crowd above erupted into chatter, yet the boy came closer to me. Mollie started to crawl away from him in fear. I don't know who any of these people are!
"Don't touch me!" Mollie hissed
"I don't want to hurt you, I promise. I just want to help you." He said, holding out his hand. Mollie stopped crawling away, and he came closer to me. She eyed him distrustfully, while he said, "Don't you want to come out of the Box?"
She grabbed his hand and he pulled her up. He was tall, and he had blond hair, and square jaw. Mollie decided she could trust him. He shook my hand, and then looked up out of the box.
"Alby, toss down the rope!" He shouted, and she flinched a bit, causing the crowd above to laugh. The boy grabbed onto the rope, and nodded for her to grab on too. We were pulled up by Alby, as the boy called him. Alby was a muscular, dark skinned guy. He was much taller than me and the blondie. He said something to me, but I had zoned out. The entire crowd was talking, making strange remarks.
"A girl? Why a girl?"
"Is she hot?"
"I call dibs!"
"No way, she's mine!"
"There's not any chance you're getting me to work with a shuckface girl." All of a sudden, she realized why the remarks were so strange. It was all boys. Mollie was snapped back to reality when someone put their hand on her shoulder. She flinched and spun around quickly, and realized it was only the boy who helped her out of the box.
"You okay?" he asked Mollie. I must've missed quite a bit while I was zoned out. She just blinked, and started walking away. Mollie had to push her way through the crowd, because most of the guys wouldn't move out of the way. Alby
and the boy went after her, and she sat down under a tree.
As they got closer, Mollie started to freak out. Why did they follow me here? I just want to be alone! Leave me alone! I don't trust any of you!
The boy and Alby inched closer to her, while she glared at them. "Hey, hey it's alright. We only want to help...Can you tell us if you remember anything else?" the boy said gently. Mollie felt that she could trust him, just a little. So, she closed her eyes and dug through her brain for any scrap of information about her past. A thought popped in her head. Gally. I have a brother named Gally.
"Do you know anyone named Gally? I think he's my brother." Mollie replied slowly. She wracked her brain for something else but every memory seemed to be blanketed in a dense white fog.
"Newt! Go get Gally for me will you?" Alby asked. Newt. That's a nice name. She was snapped out of her daze by a familiar face looming above her. Gally.
"We'll leave you two to talk." Newt said as he and Alby walked away.
"Where the hell am I? And why am I here? Who are all of you, and why did you bring me here? Why am I the only girl, and why is that such a problem?" Mollie listed off a small portion of her questions, and looked inquisitively at Gally.
"Well, we are in the Glade, and it's surrounded by a maze. We don't know why we're here, and we all come up in the Box without any memories. We call ourselves the Gladers, since we live in the Glade, and as to why we're here, we don't know. If you ever meet the bastards that created the place then you can ask. A girl has never come up in the Box before, and you must understand that it is quite a shock to us." Gally replied.
"Do you remember me then Gally?" Mollie asked.
"I...you look familiar." Gally said as he contemplated. " I think I do remember you now, but that's only because I went through the Changing and got some memories back. I remember you... in a white lab coat. You kept saying WICKED is good. You worked with them Mollie. You sent us here. I forgive you, but you probably shouldn't tell the others this."
"I worked with them! I'd never...I...." Mollie cried.
"I'll leave you to think it over. I don't blame you for what you've done, now that they've wiped your memory. I'll always be there for you sis, no matter what. I'll also make sure none of these shanks get any nasty ideas." Gally winked at me then started walking towards what she thought was called the Homestead.
"I'm Newt." He said, holding out his hand to Mollie for the second time that day. I hesitantly reached out and shook it.
"Are you the leader here?" Newt laughed, and shook his head. "No, Alby is. I'm second in command."
"Shame, you seem a lot nicer than him." Mollie said sarcastically, a smirk forming on her face.
"So what's your name?" He said, smiling. "Mollie", she said. I'm going to trust him.
As we walked through the Glade, Mollie got a lot of strange, questioning looks from all of the other Gladers. "Where are we going?" she asked.
"We're having a Gathering, we have to decide what to do with you." he said. She felt fear come over my face, but quickly tried to hide it. Newt noticed, and spoke up. "Listen, if you want to convince the other Keepers to let you stay, you have to show some fear, but don't be a coward. Chances are, they won't banish you. They just need to let you know that they have the power and authority to make it happen. Okay?" he said, looking at her this time. Mollie nodded, trying to keep all the information in her head.
Gally wouldn't let them banish me would they? Mollie had thought about asking Newt what Keepers are, but decided not to bother him with it. After all, she had a feeling Gally had already told her more than she was supposed to know.
We approached a building, and went inside. Both the walls and floors were wooden, and it appeared that not much effort had been put into it. There was a semicircle of chairs set up, and one lone chair facing it. Mollie guessed that one was for her.
In the chairs were the people, whom she guessed were the Keepers, and they all watched as she entered. Newt took his place, and Mollie looked questioningly at the empty, lone, chair. "Sit." Alby said. I nodded and sat down. "Listen Greenie, you won't say a word until I tell you to. Good that?" she nodded at Alby, wondering about the Gladers' strange vocabulary. "Now, we're here to decide the fate of this girl. Gally, what are your thoughts?"
Gally had short, blonde hair. He had a deep, scratchy voice when he talked. "I trust her. She's my sister." Everyone in the room gasped and looked at him. "I remember her from the Changing. If you punish her in any way then you'll regret it. I also think we should tell the guys not to try anything once this Gathering lets out." He crossed his arms and sat back in his chair.
"Zart?" Zart was a big guy, but he seemed quite quiet, though. "I don't know, I honestly don't see any problem with her. It's not like she's done anything..." Alby nodded. As everything went on, most people agreed with Zart. They didn't think Mollie was a spy, yet they didn't know anything about why she came.
Then it came to Newt. "I'd say we let her stay. Make her useful. She seems good enough for me, and I've actually had a one on one conversation with her. Unlike the rest of you shanks." He said, glaring at Winston. She was relieved Newt was on my side. Last to speak was an Asian kid, named Minho.
"Since she's a girl, I think we should let her stay. Besides, Gally would throw a hissy fit if we banished her!" He started to laugh while Gally glared daggers at him. He quickly shut up. Mollie suddenly felt like yelling at Minho. She could very well be strong, and easily defend herself with or without Gally's help.
Then, Alby stood. "That settles it. The girl stays. She will try out all the jobs except Slicer, since I don't really believe that would strike your fancy." The boys all started snickering at that, so she ran out of the meeting hall in disgust.
"Hey Mollie wait!" Gally yelled as he chased after me. "I'm going to show you to your room okay? You get your own since you're a girl." He motioned for me to follow him toward the Homestead. On our way, he told me about the Deadheads, Bloodhouse, and Gardens. We walked up the stairs of the Homestead, and he opened the first door on the right. "Here's your room, get some rest okay sis? Tomorrow you'll get the Tour, but act like you've never heard what Newt tells you otherwise they'll whack me for telling you too much. Goodnight."
"Goodnight Gally." Mollie replied. She looked around the room to see a small cot, pillow and blanket. There was a little brown dresser in the corner... and top was a box with her name stamped on it. Mollie slowly opened the box to find: 5 shirts, 3 shirts, one pair of jeans, hairbands... and a locket?
Mollie tried for a good 10 minutes to open the locket to no avail. She sighed and flopped onto her bed. Sleep crowded her thoughts and overtook her instantly.
Well, I hope you enjoyed. It will get better I promise! Please let me know if you see any typos, and always let know how I can improve my writing. Toodles!
