Chapter 9
Kai and Nya were at the emperor and empress's annual Christmas Eve party. They had to go every year. They were currently with their parents when the emperor and empress walked up to them with their daughter, Harumi.
"Ray. Maya. We are so glad you're here," the empress said.
"We are glad to be here," Maya said.
The empress looked over to Kai and Nya. "Oh my. Look how big your kids are now." Even though the Smith family comes every year, only Ray and Maya usually interact with the emperor and empress while Kai and Nya are off doing other things.
"It's a pleasure to see you again, emperor and empress," Nya said and did a curtsy. Kai bowed and started eyeing her suspiciously.
"Looks like you both have raised fine children," the emperor said.
"Indeed we have," Ray said.
The emperor turned to his daughter. "Harumi, why don't you go greet other party guests."
"Of course, father," Harumi said and left.
The emperor turned back to the Smith family. "Ray. Maya. We have a matter we'd like to discuss with you."
Ray and Maya nodded and then turned to their kids. "Kai. Nya. Enjoy yourselves," Maya said. "We'll see you when the party is over." The four adults left to go to a different part of the party.
Kai then turned to Nya. "What are you up to?" Kai asked.
"What do you mean?" Nya asked her brother.
"You're acting all lady like. You hate it when you have to be lady like."
"I can't have a change of heart."
"No, you can't. You never have and you've been scolded a number of times by mom and dad for it."
"I can still decide to be better, Kai." Kai watched Nya storm off. He knew something was up with her and he was determined to find out what.
Nya walked in the direction that she saw her parents walk in with the emperor and empress. She didn't know why the emperor and empress wanted to talk to her parents in private, but she was going to find out. She saw them walking down a hallway and followed them. Eventually, they stopped and Nya stayed back and make sure they couldn't see her but stayed within earshot.
"These Truth Seekers are trouble," Nya heard the emperor say. "We've lost numerous supporters because of them."
"We could try to discredit them," she heard her father say. "Put out fake records that show you didn't order anyone to be killed."
"We're way past that! I want to find these Truth Seekers and make an example out of them! No one will stand up to us once we execute them on live TV." Nya silently gasped in horror.
"Are you sure killing them will make this better?" she heard her mother say. "Ordering people to be killed is what got you into this mess in the first place. It could make public opinion turn against you even more."
"We need to show the people that there are consequences for standing up to us and don't you two try to stop us! You know our deal!"
"We've done everything you've asked and your big secret hasn't gotten out," Nya heard her father say.
"Big secret?" Nya whispered to herself.
"It better not or our deal is off," she heard the emperor say.
Nya left to go back to the party before she could be spotted. She couldn't believe what she just heard her parents discussing with the emperor and empress. They're in on everything that the emperor and empress have done and have some sort of deal so their big secret doesn't get out. What secret could the emperor and empress have that they're so afraid of getting out? She decided to just act normal for the rest of the party so her parents won't suspect anything.
The next day
Nya had woken up early to open her Christmas gifts because that's what her family does every year. She received stuff that she didn't really want like more dresses and books. She liked to read sometimes, but the books were all about how to act lady like. She also didn't mind dresses at times, but hated always having to wear them at parties especially when there are a lot of parties. Sometimes she just wants to dress comfortably. After her and her family were done opening presents, she made an excuse and left.
After Nya left, Kai went up to her room. He knew Nya was up to something and was determined to find out what his sister had been doing recently. When Kai entered Nya's room, he saw her laptop on the desk. It was open, but the screen was dark meaning that it was in sleep mode. He moved around the mouse and the screen lit up and it asked for a password to unlock it. Kai knew the password because he's "borrowed" the laptop a few times (Nya always found it and took it back). He unlocked it and saw what Nya had open: The Truth Seekers blog. Not only that. She was able to edit it and Kai knew what that meant and he couldn't believe it. "Nya, what have you been up to?" he asked out loud. He then put the laptop back into sleep mode and left Nya's room. He now knew what Nya has been doing and why she was with those other three boys. "They're the Truth Seekers," he whispered to himself once he was in the hall outside of Nya's room.
Nya went back to the warehouse to hang out with the boys again. It's Christmas and she'd prefer to be with them over her family, especially after what she found out last night. She walked up the stairs in the warehouse. "Merry Christmas," she said when she entered the makeshift living room.
"Merry Christmas," Cole said. He was the person that had celebrated Christmas most recently, even though it had been three years since he last celebrated it. Last time each of them actually celebrated Christmas was when they were still with their families.
"I brought something for you guys. Ever heard of Milton Dyer?"
The three boys nodded. Of course they heard about the most famous video game designer in Ninjago.
"Well, since my family has such a high status in Ninjago, he gave me and my brother copies of his new game before anybody else. It's called Prime Empire and I thought you guys might like it." She handed the game to Jay.
"This is amazing," Jay said. "But we don't have-"
"A game system?" Nya finished. "I thought about that too." She pulled out the game system she got for them.
Cole grabbed the game system and Lloyd grabbed the controllers. They had an old TV already in the warehouse that they never hooked up. Nya helped them hook up the TV and the game system and Jay, Lloyd, and Cole started playing the game.
Nya just sat back and watched them play. She was thinking about the conversation she heard between her parents and the emperor and empress. She was shaken out of her thoughts by someone tapping her shoulder. She looked to her left and saw that it was Jay. He held out his controller to her. "Do you want to play for a bit?" he asked.
"No, I'm good," she said and paused for a minute. "But I do need to tell you guys something."
"What is it?"
"Last night at the emperor and empress's Christmas Eve party, I overheard a conversation that the emperor and empress had with my parents." That intrigued the three boys. They paused the game and faced Nya. "My parents know about everything the emperor and empress have done."
"What?!" Lloyd asked.
"They know. They know that the emperor and empress ordered a lot of people to be killed." She started tearing up a little. She's still shocked that her parents knew all along. "They have some sort of deal with the emperor and empress. The emperor and empress have some even bigger secret that they seemed afraid of getting out."
"Did you hear what that secret was?" Cole asked.
"No. They never specifically said what that secret was, but that's not all. They want to execute the Truth Seekers on live TV."
"What?!" Jay said.
"They want to execute us?!" Cole added.
"No way," Lloyd said quieter than the other two.
"It's what they said," Nya told them. "But they still don't know who the Truth Seekers are. They want to make an example out of the Truth Seekers. If they don't know it's us, we have nothing to be worried about."
"Nya's right," Jay said. "Nobody knows it's us. As long as we keep it that way, we'll be fine and tomorrow, we should spray paint something about the Truth Seekers on that new mural. Nothing that says it's us, but something that shows support for the Truth Seekers."
"You guys are spray painting tomorrow night?" Nya asked and Jay nodded. "Can I come? I can tell my parents that I'm staying at a friend's house."
"Nya, we can't ask you to come along. It gets dangerous when police show up."
"I want to come. You guys like doing it so much. I want to give it a shot. Plus, it might help me relieve some of the anger I have towards my parents right now."
Jay looked to Lloyd and Cole. "I guess if you want to come, we can't stop you," Lloyd said.
"Yeah," Cole said. "It's your choice."
"Fine," Jay caved. "But you have to stay close and do exactly as we say. Meet here tomorrow night at 9."
"I'll be here," Nya said.
A/N: A nice Christmas chapter and Nya found out some new information. Plus, Kai figured out who the Truth Seekers are! I hope you enjoyed!
