Chapter 12

Nya's parents grounded her.  She was told that she had to stay in her room.  She couldn't believe that her parents have been keeping the emperor and empress's secrets for so long even though they killed two of her mom's good friends!  She couldn't believe that her parents would do that.  She was also terrified for what was going to happen to Jay, Lloyd, and Cole.  She had to go see them.  Luckily, she knew her parents were about to go to a meeting with the emperor and empress.  She was planning on sneaking out as soon as they left.  She won't get caught as long as she gets back before they do.

She heard a knock on the door.  "Come in," she said in an irritated voice.

The door opened and her mother walked in.  "I just wanted to tell you that we're leaving," Maya said.

"Yeah.  Whatever."  Nya turned away and looked at a wall in her room.  She would rather look at the wall than face her mother at the moment.

Maya moved over to her daughter's bed and sat on the edge.  "I know you're mad at me, but you have to understand the circumstances behind our decision.  They were threatening you and Kai.  At the time, Kai was only two years old and you were just a baby.   You both were our world and we couldn't let anything happen to either of you.  You'll understand when you have someone you really care about."

"I do," Nya whispered so soft that her mother just heard mumbling.

"What?"

"I do!" Nya shouted and turned to face her mother.  "But he's going to be executed!"

"It's for the best," Maya said trying to sound comforting.  "There will always be other guys out there."

"No!  Not like him!"  Nya turned away again.  She didn't want to show her mother the tears that were forming in the corner of her eyes.

Maya looked at her daughter with sympathy.  She actually did feel bad, but in order to continue protecting Kai and Nya, she couldn't do anything about it.  "I'm sorry, Nya," Maya said.  "I hope you can forgive me and your father eventually."  Maya stood up and left her daughter's room.  Her daughter was mad at her and she wasn't sure where her son went.  After finding out about everything at the palace, he said he needed some time to think and didn't say where he was going.  Maya was worried about what he was doing.

Nya watched from the window of her room as her parents left.  She waited a couple of minutes after they left before leaving the house just to make sure they didn't forget anything and needed to come back.

She went out of the house and hurried down to the police station.  When she got there,  she knew that she probably wouldn't be let in to see them.  She looked around and found a janitor's closet and she was lucky enough to find a police uniform in it.  She put it on and found a key card in the pocket.  "Ok," she said to herself in the closet.  "Whoever left this here is a really stupid police officer."  She walked into the back towards the jail cells.  She kept her head down the entire time while walking.  When she got to the door to enter the area with the jail cells, she used the key card to get in there.  Once she was in there, she spotted the three boys she was looking for in one of the holding cells and walked over to them.

"Great," Cole said.  "Another cop here to tell us that what we did was wrong."

Nya took off the police officer hat she was wearing.  "Not quite," she said.

"Nya?" Jay said.

"Yeah.  It's me.  I had to come see you guys."

"Really?  Considering that it's probably your fault we're here," Cole spat.

"No," she said.  "I really didn't say anything.  My stupid brother found out somehow."

"Well, why aren't you in trouble?"

"Because of the deal that my parents made with the emperor and empress."  She sighed.  "I found out more about the deal and the story behind it.  My parents don't reveal the emperor and empress's secrets and in return me and my brother are protected."

"What's the story behind it?" Lloyd asked curiously.

"My parents were in the resistance against Lord Garmadon and so were the emperor and empress as well as a couple of my mother's close friends, Libber and Lily."

"Lily?" Cole asked and they all looked at him.  "That was my mother's name."

"From what I was told, they stormed the palace one night to dethrone Lord Garmadon.  The emperor ran into the throne room during the fighting.  Libber noticed before anyone else did and ran after him.  She saw that Lord Garmadon was about to kill the emperor and killed him first.  She thought that she was saving the life of a friend, but the emperor killed her.  Her husband, his name was Cliff and he was a famous actor, also helped the resistance and the empress killed him when he saw what happened to his wife.  My parents found out what happened and the emperor and empress threatened that they would hurt me and Kai if they didn't keep what happened a secret.  They told them that me and Kai would have good lives and be protected if they let them become the new rulers and kept their secrets.  My parents tried getting the rest of the resistance on board with it and some agreed while others didn't.  I guess Lily knew something was suspicious regarding Cliff and Libber's deaths and started investigating.  They also knew that Cliff and Libber had a kid who was adopted because Cliff and Libber didn't want the kid around with them being part of the resistance.  They wanted to locate the kid because they were afraid of what would happen if the kid learned the truth because he looked into what happened to his birth parents.  After a few years, they found the couple that adopted him and..."  Nya stopped and looked at Jay.  "You know what happened to them."

Jay's jaw dropped.  He never knew anything about his birth parents and he just found out that the emperor and empress killed them and then killed his adopted parents while trying to look for him.  "Cliff and Libber were my birth parents?" he asked for clarification.  Lloyd and Cole looked at their friend concerned because this was a lot.  Jay noticed how his friends were looking at him.  "I'm fine.  Please continue."

"They knew you were still alive when they checked the trailer and only found your adopted parents' bodies.  They've spent years trying to find you and I guess that they have you now, but they don't even realize it.  I just thought you should know."

"Thanks Nya."

"Wait," Cole interrupted.  "Did my mom ever figure any of this out?"

"No, but she did get close," Nya said.  "The emperor and empress knew she was getting too close and used an experimental drug on her that made it look like she was dying from a deadly disease."

"Th-they killed her too?"

"I'm afraid so."  Nya looked at the time.  "I have to get back home before my parents realize I'm gone."  She looked back at the three boys.  "I promise that I will figure out some way to save you guys."

"I know you will," Jay said.

Nya put the hat back on and left quickly.

Jay turned to Lloyd.  "I'm sorry that my mom killed your dad," he said.

"It's ok," Lloyd said.  "I understand why she did it.  She thought that she was saving a friend.  She didn't know that she would get stabbed in the back.  If it was anyone's fault, it was the emperor's."

Cole turned around and punched one of the walls of the jail cell they were in.  "I can't believe it!  My mom's dead because of them!"

"Calm down, Cole," Lloyd said.  "That's not helping."

Jay leaned against one of the other walls and slid down until he was sitting.  He was starting to really take in what Nya just told him.  The emperor and empress have been trying to find him for years.  His adopted parents didn't die because they were speaking out against the emperor and empress.  They died because they were raising him.

Lloyd got Cole to stop punching the wall when he motioned to Jay.  The two sat down on either side of their friend.  It was then that Jay realized he had been crying.  Lloyd and Cole wrapped Jay in a hug.

"We'll figure this out," Lloyd said as he and Cole pulled away.

"The emperor and empress won't get away with this!" Cole said.

"We've all lost so much because of them," Jay said.

"But we're still here, aren't we?" Lloyd asked.

"As long as we're still breathing, we still have a chance," Cole added.

"You guys are right," Jay said with a small smile.  "This isn't over yet.  We can still expose them for who they really are."

"There's that optimism we love," Cole said.

"We still have a chance."
