Chapter 44 - Success

Chapter 44 - Success

Tobias         (A/N- This all takes place a while before his phone call with Zeke. Enjoy!)

I take a deep breath.

All I have to do is press the enter button.

If it works, then we can get the answer we've been working and waiting for.

But if it doesn't, then we're all out of ideas.

Then it's back to ground zero.

Why is this so hard? It's just a button. All I have to do is press it.

But it's a button that could determine the city's future.

A future that could go good or back to war.

A crowd of people from 2836 have formed around me and this computer. I can tell that they all are as nervous as me because no one moves a muscle or says a word. It's dead silent in the room except for the sound of the computer's quiet buzz because of most of them being turned on in the room.

It's now or never.

I press the button.

A little turning circle appears signaling that it's processing the code.

I hope I typed it in right. I could have messed it up even if I did check it five times already. But there still is that chance...

The circle stops moving.

Green letters replace the spot were the little circle was spinning. I feel a smile form on my face as shouts of joy are heard throughout the room.

The letters say two words.

Two important words.

-Access Granted-

We are in the system.

The computer system that's in that metal building outside the fence.

Now we can start to get places.

"It just seems like there's nothing hooked up to it! Just a regular computer!" A female voice exclaims sounding frustrated.

We've been searching the computer from the building that we hacked into all day and no one (including myself) can find any signs of anything. There's no signs of anything suspicious. It seems like a fairly new computer with it barely being used and having nothing much in its history. Also for it having the newest software and protection on it.

But clearly not good enough protection because here we all are after hacking into it on our second try...

"Everyone. It's getting late. Like already past two am late. Why don't we all take a rest and meet back here around eight am later. We will work and focus better if we are well rested. Agreed?" Andy asks standing in the front of the room. He has dark bags under his eyes. I'm guessing that all of us probably do have similar bags under our eyes as well though.

Mumbles of agreements go throughout the room but then one Erudite shouts above the rest.

"We are so close now! You all are really going to quit that easily?!"

People just turn and stare at him. His cheeks immediately turn red from embarrassment then he gets up and walks out the door, clearly reluctantly agreeing with the rest of us.

I power off the computer I was using and then head toward my temporary apartment. I decide to call Zeke and tell him about today and see if he has any news on Shauna.

My alarm starts screaming at seven fifteen telling me that it's time to get up. I have to be in the Tech Room by eight.

As I get ready, I think about my conversation with Zeke last night.

He said that the doctors came to the conclusion that Shauna is paralyzed from the waist down again. They aren't sure of what caused it to come back though.

I told him about hacking into the computer and how it's not suspicious, but I'm more than positive that there's something important hiding in it.

I head out the door and grab a bagel and a bottle of water on my way to the Tech Room. On the way, I run into Diane. We walk together to the Tech Room and talk about nothing in particular.

"Do you have any family?" I can't help but ask.

"Yeah. I've got my husband, Ryan and then my little two twin daughters Marie and Lillian. What about you?"

"I have my mother." I say not really wanting to continue on with the topic.

"No offence, but I find it hard to believe you don't have a girlfriend." She says.

"It's kinda a rough topic," I say looking at the ground, "She, well, was killed outside the fence."

"Oh. I'm sorry. I wouldn't of brought it up if I'd known. Do you mind me asking what her name was?"

"It's okay. You didn't know. And her name was Beatrice. Beatrice Prior. We all called her Tris though." I say finally looking up a little

"Prior? Prior as in Caleb Prior?"

"She was his younger sister. They weren't twins though. They were ten months apart."

"Wow. It's a small world, huh." She says chuckling a little.

"Tell me about it." I say chuckling a little myself.

"There's got to be something hiding in that computer. I mean, it's just so innocent that it's suspicious. You know what I mean?" Diane states.

"I've been thinking the same thing all night. It's too innocent. It's been whipped clean of everything which means it had to of been hiding something at one time. Maybe it still is."

"I may be overreacting, but it almost seems like a trap. Like one of those in a movie or something where they set it up and we just fell right into it." She says.

"I hadn't even thought of that." I say almost in awe. That makes total sence. We could've just fell right into their trap. Well, if it is one.

We arrive at the Tech Room and I hold the door open for her. I just can't stop thinking about that.

It makes sence. Greg said someone wanted to kill us.

He said he would.

But who is this he?

Is this he smarter than we think?

Is all of this going to blow up in our faces?

Is he already in the room, waiting for the perfect chance to snipe us all?

Snap out of it. I tell myself mentally. I'm just paranoid and overreacting.

I turn on the same computer I was at yesterday and Diane moves over to sit next to me. I feel more comfortable knowing a little bit about her now. She's thirty three, has a family her husband Ryan and their two twin daughters who are both three years old, she has lived in Erudite her whole life and she has been friends with Cara since they were little, now making her close with Caleb as well. She told me that before they were kidnapped, they had found out that they were going to have a baby girl.

She also knows a little about me, but way less than I know about her.

I'm not too interesting of a person though, and I told her that. She didn't ask two many questions then.

Andy told us to work in pairs or groups of three or four today to maybe have a group effort work better than working by ourselves. Diane and I are working together.

We spend almost all day searching the computer and looking for anything. The only things we found were some web searches.

One being a recipe for lasagna, another being an article on some tree that made no sence whatsoever, and a third was a YouTube video search of an old governor called a president named Barack Obama which was photoshopped to have it look like he was singing some girly song. It seemed like something Zeke or Uriah would've looked up.

There was a bunch of unrelated web searches and random things that we found in documents and files, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Honestly, it looked like the history to an eleven year old's laptop.

"What's this?" Diane asks looking at a file. It's pretty strange and we haven't come across it before. It's labled -729910-.

"Open it." I say, suspense starting to get to me.

"I will." She says clicking on the file. It takes a second to load, the it opens revealing around 20 documents.

"Get this to go up on the overhead. This looks important." I say.

She clicks a little button in the top left corner and sure enough, what is on the computer screen infront of me now pops up on the white board in the front of the room.

"Check this out. It's in a file labled 729910." I announce to the people in the room. Mumbles and questions are spread like wildfire throughout the room.

Diane clicks on the first file at the top of the list. It's labled 729911.

It looks like video footage of some kind of prison hallway. It says August 23 15:24 in the bottom right corner.

"Wait. That's today's date, and the same time it is now. 3:24pm. In the bottom right corner!" I exclaim.

"It's live footage!" Someone exclaims.

Diane goes to another file directly below it labled 729912. The only thing changing in these labels is the last digit. I wonder if that means something.

This one goes to an empty hallway with prison cells in it; five on each side it looks like.

File 729913 is identical 729912, and so is 729914, 729915 and 729916. But 729917 is finally different.

It's a longer hallway than the others with six cells on each side, except these cells have people in them.

"Turn up the volume, quick." Andy says sounding tense. I can tell that the suspense is getting to him as well.

Someone across the room goes up to the whiteboard and presses a little dial and the sound of voices flood the room. They are coming from the footage though, not from the people in the room. All of us just watch in awe for who knows how long.

"Can you zoom in at all?" Someone asks.

Diane messes with the computer for a minute, but soon enough she gets it to zoom in on the people.

I don't recognize any of them, and it doesn't seem like anyone in the room does either. She moves on to the next file; 729918.

This file also is of a hallway, but it only has three cells on each side of the hallway. There is two empty cells though.

She zooms in closer to the people. It is silent, so they must not be talking to each other. There is two men on the one side, one much older than the other. The cell to the left of the younger looking one is empty. It looks like there hasn't been anyone in there ever.

On the other side there is two women, and in the middle of there cells is an empty one. There was obviously is or was someone living in that one empty cell at a time. There's a dark blood stain on the ground near the back of the cell along with a few smaller blood stains near the middle and front. I'm assuming that that person may have been killed or had died. The thought sends chills down my back.

The one woman closer to the camera has blonde hair and is laying down. You can obviously tell that she is pregnant; her huge stomach buldging from her shirt. She has her arm draped over her stomach and looks like she is asleep. The woman to the far end of the camera has dark brown hair and looks much older than the pregnant woman. She is sitting up with her back against the hard wall behind her. There is a huge blood stain in the middle of her cell, but not as dark as the stain in the empty cell in the middle.

The men across the way start talking. The older one is sitting and holding his head in his hands while the younger brown haired guy is laying on his side with his hand propped up on his arm.

"I hope he doesn't hurt her too badly." The older one exclaims.

I look out and see that someone in the Tech Room is taking notes on a notepad on most likely what they're saying. That's probably a smart idea.

"She's strong. She'll be okay. Don't worry Caleb."

Gasps are heard throughout the room. Caleb? Wait? Wha--

"You're just saying that to reassure yourself, Dad. I can tell you're nervous." Caleb says turning over so he's laying on his back looking at the celing.

That must be Caleb, Tris's brother and Andrew Prior, Tris's father. Then on the other side of the hallway must be Natalie Prior, Tris's mother and... who's the pregnant woman?

"I know." Mr. Prior says running his fingers through his dark brown hair.

Oh! I remember now! The pregnant woman must be Cara; Caleb's now wife. Diane told me earlier that they are pregnant with a baby girl.

I say who the people are and everyone looks at me like I'm psychic or something.

Someone bursts into the room in the door farthest away from the camera. Cara jumps from her spot where she was sleeping and looks toward the door along with everyone else in the room. The person who just entered is a tall man and it looks like he's carrying someone. He goes to the cell between Mrs. Prior and Cara, he opens it, then throws the body inside and closes the door. The person lets out a small scream then groans as they hit the ground.

I recognize that scream; but where from...?

The person now in the cell is defiantly female, and is laying on their side from where they landed after hitting the wall. She doesn't look like she's too tall, but she is laying down... So who knows. She has a dark blonde ponytail down the middle of her back that stops around her shoulder blades and it is all knotted and has some things dried and stuck in it. She wears a torn up black T-shirt and jeans that are also very torn. Her left leg; it looks like she's been shot multiple times. The whole calf is covered in a deep red blood and is still bleeding from what looks like a new bullet lodged in her leg, but her old wounds are still bleeding as well; her ankle in particular. She also has a cut across her forehead and by her nose. Her nose is bleeding down her face as she lays there trembling.

I can't stop thinking, 'Where do I know her from?!' But I just can't put my finger on it. I hear her scream over and over again in my head, but I just can't remember whose voice that is.

And that man who brought her in, who is that? He looked kind of familiar as well. Where do I know these two people from?!

Diane zooms in on the trembling, bleeding girl whose laying on her side. As if she knows we can see her, the girl lifts her head and looks directly into the camera with her shimmering blue eyes.

I would know those eyes from anywhere, but how--?

Her name falls from my lips before my brain processes any of this,

"Tris."

A/N-

Hi humans!!

Cliffhanger!!! Please don't butterknife me!

I'll be honest, this is probably my fav chap so far besides chap 29 where Tobais realizes why Evelyn really got him a dog.

So this chap is deticated to an amazingly awesome person, my blonde by heart,  blondedivergent <<Totally go follow her if you aren't already!! She is so great that I can't even describe her in enough words! She has been there for me to bounce problems and ideas off of and has dealt with my mini rants on how wattpad hates me and all of that stuff. She helped me with this stuff in this chap when I had writers block and even though I changed it like a ton, she still gave me the main idea for the chap and I'm greatful for that! I needed the boost and she gave it to me! Also check out her two stories, Revergent which is an after Allegiant fanfic and her other story,
Red Warrior which is an awesome werewolf story and you just have to read it! Both of them are really great and I totally recommend reading them! I don't know what I would do without you! You're amazing! Thanks so much! <4
