Dark space

Cement floor.

Smooth cold cement floor on my face.

What the hell am I doing on the floor?  Quickly snapping into action I put my hands either side of my chest and push myself up from the position I was in.

Where am I?  I scan the room, still in a crouched position, searching for something familiar and wracking my brain to see if I can remember anything. The room is dark but I still managed to make out the silhouettes of a couple of figures a few metres away. I freeze and break into a cold sweat.

What happend?

My breathing quickens as a start to slip into a panic, but before I can some of the figures step forward, into a small patch of dimmed light. The air escaped my lungs in relief as I let go of the breath I didn't realise I was holding. Standing in front of me was my best friend. Noah, whom I have been friend with since we were both little. Jasper, who I met only last year but is still one of my best friends, and Emily, Jasper's girlfriend and also close friend of mine.

"Thank God." I sighed as I got up and started pacing towards them.

I was about to start running out of desperation to close the gap between me and my precious friends, before I hit something with a force the same as the one that came imediantly after, when I bounced back and sprawled across the cold floor once again.

" Ow..." I said, slowly getting back on my feet.

I just....hit something?

I looked back at my friends who haven't moved from where they were standing before I fell. They were whispering to each other, glancing at me and then quietly laughing. I stare at them with a confused face.

How can they be laughing?  I thought as I slowly approached them again, hands out in front of me trying to figure out what just happened.

Still staring at my friends who were now all looking at me with smirks and staying stationary, I still trying to figure what exactly is going on here.

" Is this a prank? Seriously guys this isn't funny." I'm getting mad now. How would anyone find this funny, and they know I hate pranks.

They just keep laughing, then Noah speaks up, his voice blunt, but still his own,

"This is no prank Callum, we' re just trying to trim the unecessaries."

My hand hits something that feels like a wall. I look at it expecting to find, well, a wall, but there is nothing. I don't know which I am more confused by, Noah's statement and tone or whatever this invisible wall is.

" What do you mean ' Trim the unecessaries'? And what the hell is this?!" I said, my voice getting louder and angrier by the second, as I slammed my palm into what looked like nothing but yet when my hand touched it, it was outlined with an unnatural blue tinge and pain shot down my arm. I jerked away and cradled my arm.

"Aarrhhh!" I scream in pain and frustration.

" He means weeding out the weak individuals." This time it was Emily, who's voice was as blunt as Noah's.

What's that supposed to mean? Why can't i get to them?!

This time I slowly pressed both hands to the 'wall'. The unnatural blue light outlined them and I continued adding pressure.

" Come on guys, help me get through this thing!" I groaned out with almost all my body weight on my hands.

"Now why would we do that?" Jasper finally said since he had been silent this entire time.

I freeze.

"W-what?!" I gape at him in disbelief. Something is wrong, very wrong. They're not acting like themselves at all!

" Don't you get it Callum! Your the weak link! Your the one dragging us down! There's nothing special about you! Your just plain old Callum!" Noah yelled with a sudden sharpness to his voice.

No it can't really be him. He said it didn't matter I didn't have any hobbies. He said I wasn't average and that I couldn't be replaced. He said a lot of things.......and I believed him.

"This isn't real...THIS CAN'T BE REAL!" Noah would never use my biggest insecurity against me. He's my friend!

" HOW COULD YOU SAY THAT, I'M YOUR FRIEND!" I scream at him so hard my lungs sting with emotion, while subconsciously my fists pound the barrier furiously and desperately.

Noah's gaze never left me, when he stepped closer. So close that if he took another step he would run into the invisible wall. He moved his face closer to mine and whispered....

" Oh Callum, but you never really were, were you?"

And with that I stopped, hot tears spilled out onto my face, and my world had finally started to break apart.

beep. beeep. beeeP. beEP. bEEP. BEEP! BEEEP! BEEEEPP!

I shoot up screaming. Everything is blurry, colours are too bright and the light is blinding me. I think I'm going to be sick. I sit there for what feels like forever with a pounding headache, and wait for my breathing and heart rate to go back to normal.

I blindly turn to my right and stick my hand out to touch my rough wooden bedside table. I hit my box with blurry glowing lights to stop the blaring siren and then start to fumble around it. Come on where are they? My hand rests on the plastic frames that are the only reason I can see, picking them up and sliding them on so they fit perfectly behind my ears and on the bridge of my nose.

I finally look up from my black blanket to see my blue painted walls covered in posters and my littered desk with battered corners. I switch my focus to my clock. 6:17am.

I swing my legs off to the side of my bed, suddenly feeling cold. I shiver I look down at myself, only to find that I'm completely head to toe drenched in sweat.

Great. Another nightmare.
