The reveal

I took a deep breath, and looked at the stage. Today was the day.

The day that would determine everything.

I wiped a bit of sweat off my brow, and glanced at Derek (the dude in charge), who gave me a small but unmistakeable nod. I nodded back, my insides turning over and over in anticipation.

Although I dreaded it, today was the day I had to confess to my fans. Not confess so much as inform. Either they would believe me, or both my entire life and career would collapse. So I had been planning this day for months- they had to believe me, no matter what.

I looked around one last time, and stepped onto the stage. Almost a nanosecond later, million of screams erupted all at once, leaving a ring in my ears- even after ten years of this, loud noises still drove me insane. Ignoring the ringing, I walked to the front of the stage and faced the crowd, a fake smile plastered onto my face. "What's up?"

Another million screams erupted, and it took all my willpower not to scream at them all to shut up. But I forced myself to stay calm- I had to get this perfect, and losing my temper would do no good to anyone.

Instead, I rested my hand on my guitar and gave a quick glance at the people playing behind me- they were ready, and so was I. I looked up again. "So, you wanna get this thing started?"

I don't think I need to tell you what happened next.

I paused, before saying clearly, "This is just a song I wrote a while ago, called Someday. It's got a lot of meaning, and I hope you like it!"

Of course, the crowd went wild. A few seconds later, it stopped and I flashed the signal to the band to start playing. I looked around at the audience, took a deep breath, strummed a chord and began to sing.

I didn't look at anything else until the song was finished. As soon as I ended, the crowd, for what felt like the hundredth time that day, erupted in crazy cheers. I quickly flashed a thumbs-up to the band and grinned at them, before turning back to the audience.

"So did you like it?"

A bunch of yeses chorused around the place, and I smiled despite my pounding heart. I wringed my hands together, trying not to show how nervous I was. It was now or never. My entire life rested on what I was about to say.

"So, guys, what I said about the song's meaning. Do you want to know it?"

Of course, they screamed.

I laughed slightly. "Okay, I'm taking that as a yes. Maybe I should have told you this before, but..."

I looked at the crowd for their reaction to my seriousness. They all stared at me with mixed faces: some of rapt attention, some of confusion, some of apprehension. So far, so good.

I carried on, wanting tk ge it out as quick as possible. "I know it sounds crazy, but I'm not who you think I am. The song, it was about dreaming, right? That's kind of what I am. I was asked to tell the humans earlier, but I'm what you would call a Dream-Catcher. Our kind have been travelling the universe, capturing dreams and awarding them to those who deserve it. And of course, stealing them from thsoe who don't. Our species have remained a secret since the start of time, but we think it's time you know who we are."

A series of gasps echoed around the place. They were in complete shock, their mouths moving wordlessly. They hadn't been this astounded since I did the original version of one of my clean-version songs. What they did now would determine everything...

A few seconds passed, and I was beginning to fear the worst. Then suddenly, the look of surprise on their faces morphed into fear, and people bustled around each other, trying tk escape- they probably now thought I was some sort of demon or something.

I waited for a minute or two, then gestured with my arms, projecting my voice as hard as I coukd. "Enough! Everyone, please listen! Or I won't publish my new album."

That got them. They all stopped and turned to me, wondering what I meant.

And then I snapped.

I couldn't do it any longer.

I burst out in helpess fits of laughter, doubling over and howling with mirth. All the while, the audience stared at me like I was loopy. Some small part of me felt bad for them. The rest was too busy laughing.

When I had stopped cracking up enough to talk properly, I looked at them. "Psych! You lot really fell for that? I'm joking! Happy April Fool's Day!"

Their faces relaxed, and some even chuckled. They had forgotten that today was the first day of April, meaning pranks were expected. Still, I don't think I would believe myself anyway! I placed my hand on my guitar, and looked at the audience happily.

"Anyway, what song should I do next?"

Just as they were about to start bursting my eardrums, there was a sickening crash, causing me to jump. Sudden fear coursing through me, I looked around, searching for any damage. "Uh, everything alright?"

Suddenly, there was a ghostly flash of light, and a thunderous voice began to echo around, chilling me to the bone. "Who summoned the Dream-Catchers?"

I groaned.

Of course I had to summon an actual Dream-Catcher.

(And.... that's it! Please tell me what you thought about it, and if I should add the lyrics to the song below!)
