Chapter 24: I Seriously Have No Idea What to Call this Chapter Again

The chapter name should be a Fall Out Boy song.

"So there's an invisible mountain on top of a plateau???" The confusion stirred more as you kept on reading about Finnmarksvida.

It's been a few weeks since you both left his childhood home and his folks. Berwald still doesn't approve though. Meanwhile Lukas had a bit of a jealous scene at a point with Matthias. It made you laugh when you saw him acting so strange, even to himself and his own brother.

"Think of it as a fortess that houses the biggest trolls in the world." Lukas lifted the hood of the car up.

"I imagine an invisible tower that reaches the stars."

"Exactly."

He grabbed the rag next to him and started to clean the engine. You on the other hand were reading several books at a time. You think of this as a cram school for new recruites and juniors who needed to advance quickly. Studying a bit of history there, reading about the origins and types of monsters over here, and learning about cures and medicinal procedures on magical accidents everywhere. There was just more than first-hand experience. You learned that there was more to fighting the myths.

A lot of things in the world shouldn't exist and a lot of things should've died a long time ago. Stories and tales that you've heard were in the very books he lent you. It never fails to amaze you how this was all taken away from the eyes of mortals. How the entities shielded their forms from the beings that used to live and walk amongst with. Sadness and understanding filled you. Not every myth is safe and not every story is completely true. Writers might've been biased or maybe took the event in a wrong way.

The whole universe may be full of truths and lies, but there's always that infinite source where none of them are lies or the truth. Answers will be answers and questions will be questions. It will stay that way as long as it can.

"So what's up with Finnmarksvida again?" You closed the book you were reading and placed it down on the backseat of the car.

"Well, I bet you know the Kirklands right?" A small little wisp of the cold air came oit of his mouth as he sighed.

"Yeah, I'm roommates with Alice." You rubbed your hands together and breathed out hot air into them.

"Her brother called me up and said that the fences that kept the trolls in are broken." He continued cleaning and fixing the engines. "And since the nearest veteran is me, I have to go up there."

"Where are the others anyway?" You climbed on top of the car's roof and jumped on the RV's.

"The main location of association's base is all the way in the Svalbard archiepelago, it's quiet up there and it's like a refuge for mythical creatures too." Lukas said it almost dreamily. "It's freezing there though. Too cold for my taste at times."

You could tell from his voice that he really admires the place. It was almost childlike amazement and awe. A rare thing to here from him, but you should get used to it. It made you smile and feel warm in the inside like a fuzzy teddy bear. Cute, cuddly, and innocent.

"It's secluded from the world and peaceful, even if the place was used for whaling back then." You sat on top of the RV, listening to him and instantly forgetting what you were supposed to do. "A whole island that's barely touched by humanity since then. Vast lands of ice and national parks that reserve the wildlife. There was this old abandoned mining shaft, somewhere farther from the settlements, where some trolls take refuge in and live down there like a community. Dragon nests are almost all around, but the biggest breeding site is somewhere on top of the mountains where you can ski. The waters aren't really safe for small boats or swimming alone."

"Why? Besides the freezing conditions."

"Sea monsters and sirens mostly, but there are other sea spirits too."

"Are there draugar there?" You had to ask this one.

"Of course, but there aren't as much as many." He said as he replaced some of the older parts of the car.

It seemed like a nice place, only if the draugar weren't lurking nearby.

Come to think of it, you've never seen or encountered a draugr your whole life. You've always wondered where you can find one and maybe bash its head for scientific reasons. They're the real walking dead and you have to know how to defend yourself against one. None of the books have any info on that.

"So how do you beat a draugr?"

"You don't." Now that made a chill run up your spine. "A draugr is described to be an overpowering undead creature, and I can't deny that."

Lukas sighed and finally closed the hood of the car.

"What do you mean by overpowering?"

"Draugar are shaped by the souls of the body's former host. They can shapeshift, choose how strong they can be, do magic if they used to be a sorcerer in their past life, and carry the worst stench you could ever smell." He explained and closed his tool box. "They can visit someone in their dreams in leave them a gift when they wake up, that's where people can be lucky. Though most draugar are not as kind. They are oftenly blue, like Emily from Corpse Bride. Though there are some that are maroon like they burned in hell, or something like that.

(Thank you to @Seko549 for correcting me... I wrote Sally, not Emily at first...)

"The dead can become a draugr because of improper burials or the motives of something sinister like greed or envy. Though most of the time it can be improper burial, meaning they weren't buried in a laying position but in somewhat upright like they're standing. Theories say that families do these to keep their treasure guarded throughout the generations. People can be infected too, only if they die in a place with tainted spirits."

"Creepy, but how do you kill it?"

"Like I said: You don't." Lukas sighed. "You can kill the decaying host, but you can not destroy a spirit or a soul. You only delay them and prevent them from finding another host. There are ways on defeating it. One, you wrestle the draugr back to it's grave. The reason is because some draugar are immune to weapons. Two, if you're lucky enough, you can wound them with weapons at points but still ineffective, even with silver. Then you have to go through a whole process of it to make sure it's dead. Decapitate it, burn the body, and throw the ashes into the sea."

As silence filled the air, you just stared at him. You simply stared at him with the most stoic face he has seen you put on. There was nothing in your eyes that can be sensed with emotion or any feelings at all. You were just like that. Looking emotionless, a monotonous face.

"You're screaming in the inside, aren't you?" Lukas broke the silence.

You sighed, "Yes I am Lukas, yes I am."

"And do you know why I told you all of that information when you asked?"

"You're going to hunt one down before we go up to the plateau, aren't you."

"Correction, you are hunting one down."

Again with the monotonous stare. Then it was replaced by an intense gaze with fear and annoyance.

"You're kidding me, right?"

"Nope." He mimicked the popping sound you make.

"You fucking asshole."

I AM SO SORRY FOR NOT UPDATING FOR THE LAST FOUR MONTHS, HOLY CRAP!

I had this massive writer's block and these two fandoms have been pulling me like Cindy being pulled by Jimmy Neutron and Timmy Turner between dimensions. I had to update quickly and resulted to writing all of this down for the last three hours. I just wrote shit I remember and searched up some stuff that corrects everything in the facts, and guess what I had some wrong. Basically, I need my history nerd side with me again before Dragon Age can even pull me back into the fandom. I love Dragon Age, but now is not the time from Dragon Age when your whole chapter is about an invincible zombie.
Anyways, I hope I can finish the next one by June or before June so I can rest in peace.
Also, I may have a bit of a problem because I am going to graduate from Junior High this school year, and I'll set an explanation of the school system here for another note. A whole note maybe on my rant book.
For now, I hope you enjoyed this chapter and I really hope that I can update sooner than I can expect myself to.
And thank you all for being patient and giving me support through the comments! It's been one hell of a writer's block for me TuT"
Auf Wiedershen for now!
