Chapter 16: Well Fuck

The both of you finally reached the destination and parker the car a few kilometers away.

The sun was still up and you had no idea what time it was. The whole sun thing was still new to you and time right now didn't matter. As long as the dark came, it means sleep for you. Unless you both are on the job.

You got out of the car with Lukas and helped him with the other stuff.

You were surprised to see a portable tanning bed in one of the boxes.

"Explain why we have a tanning bed." You looked at Lukas who knitted his eyebrows.

"I didn't-"

"Matthias." You both sighed and shook your heads.

You both knew who would've snuck that in anyways. The boxes he must've helped you with were some of the things he secretly snuck into the car.

You both checked the other boxes to see that some even had different equipment instead of the usual you both bring.

You opened one box that had cans of oil, Lukas opened another box to reveal firewood, and the last one had the rest of your equipment.

"He likes working with heavy stuff, I see..." You commented. "I am not carrying the tanning bed."

"Who says we'll be bringing it?" Lukas grabbed the other things.

You opened your backpack and prepared your camera and helmet.

"So," Lukas spoke all of a sudden." You used to date my brother."

"Yeah, for a year and a half I guess." You shrugged. "It's been seven years, if he came back then I'd just think of him as a friend."

"Then why was your face red when we encountered Mark?"

"What-" You stopped yourself and remembered your encounter with the huldrekall. "Oh..."

Nervousness filled your mind as you coughed. You averted your eyes away from his and pursed your lips. Then it hit you.

"A-Are you... Are you jealous or something?" You knitted your eyebrows and looked at him.

"No." He answered bluntly.

You rose your eyebrow at him and shrugged it off.

"Anyways, let's go."

"Go where?"

"We're camping."

He wasn't actually kidding about camping. You though you were just going to have a stakeout, but you both were really going to camp. You both were nearby the shore and setting up a tent.

The firewood Matthias snuck in was proven to be helpful. The other stuff? Not so much. The tanning bed? You might use that for warmth later.

You hung out by the fire to keep yourself warm while Lukas scouted along the shore to search for signs of the troll. You rubbed your hands together and blew in them. The wind by the shore made it even colder. Camping by the shore was okay, but camping by the shore during the winter? Bye. But you had to take the risks.

You stared at the dancing flames and thought about Lukas' words.

It's not like he likes me or anything. You poked the burning leaves into the fire with a stick. Maybe it's just a regular question. People ask those kinds of questions, right? How am I even studying journalism when I'm awkward?

You sighed and threw the burned stick away. You rested your cheek on your palm and thought about it. It was making you crazy. You think that it's only a question out of curiosity, but you have suspicions of it being something more than that.

It's not like we're together or anything. You sighed and stared at the shore. He isn't my boyfriend. He's not my significant other. I'm the significant annoyance then.

You smacked yourself on the cheek and sighed angrily.

Stop thinking like that!

You sighed and muttered curses in Dutch and English. You looked at the flames and thought about it for a while.

Suddenly you heard singing.

The voice was sweet and melodious. It was like a lullaby putting you to sleep slowly. You stood up and searched for the source of the sound. You scanned the forest and shore. What caught your eye was Lukas walking towards the water.

"Lukas?" You knitted your eyebrows in confusion.

He was staring at something. Something at the sea. Your eyes drifted at the spot to see a figure. It was lurking in the dark cold water. You squinted your eyes and walked a bit closer. You saw a woman's head popping out from the water.

"Why the hell would anyone-" Then realization hit you.

Troll hunters are already the hunter for every creature, but some hunters specify themselves to some certain creatures...

"Oh fuck no." You began to run towards the hypnotized man.

"LUKAS!" You yelled and ran faster. "LUKAS BONDEVIK!"

You huffed and puffed. Stumbled over some of the rocks and jumped over a log. He was already ankle deep into the water. The song was getting louder and louder as you ran.

"WHY THE FUCK DO YOU HAVE TO BE OVER THERE ANYWAYS!" You yelled.

Suddenly another song came. You froze. Your body shook and goosebumps began to rise under your clothes. You slowly turned towards the water.

"M-Mama?"

There she was. In the water in the usual style clothes she would wear to her clinic. A smile on her face with her hair in a bob. Your chest suddenly felt tight, you suddenly forgot how to breath. The shock overwhelmed you.

Your mouth opened slightly as you took a deep breath. Tears started to roll down your cheeks. Your breathing turned ragged.

"(Y/n)." Her voice echoed in your ears.

Something hurtful pierced in your heart. Her voice, her smile, the way she dressed seemed unprofessional. It all hurts. You hesitated at first, but you began to walk towards the water.

"Baby come here." She spoke gently. "We'll be together forever."

"Together..." You whispered.

"No more hunting, no more of your Uncle Jared, no more difficulties. You can forget everything." She spoke with charm. "You can stay with me. Forever without suffering."

"Without suffering..."

The water was already touching the sole of your shoes.

I'm sorry.

Your eyes widened as you heard a familiar voice in your head.

Who-

I'm sorry...

It spoke again. You looked around for the other voice that distracted you from your mother's. From a distance you saw him. The owner of the voice. Lukas Bondevik. The man you've been with through this journey since day one. The one who taught you about trolls, brought you on his adventure, listened to your story, and showed another side of the world.

"Lukas..." You finally remembered what you were doing. "Oh shit, LUKAS!"

The image of your mom shattered as you ran towards him. He was now waist deep in the water.

"Goddammit! LUKAS WAKE UP!" You yelled with all your might.

You ran and ran. He was getting closer to the woman who lured him in. Everything went in slow motion.

You took off your parka and threw it on the beach, the woman emerged that showed the gills on the sides of her upper body and the folded scaly wings on her back, her arms reaching out towards him.

"LUKAS!" You yelled and jumped into the water as the siren pulled him into the water.

You swam into the dark water watching his platinum blonde hair floating with the siren grinning widely. His eyes were completely dull with nothing. His emotions were covered up, but he wasn't moving. The only sign that he was alive came from the bubbles coming from his mouth.

You moved your legs and arms faster.

Your eyes widened as the lips of the creature collided with his. Emotions swelled up in you and swam faster. You spent no time pulling Lukas away from the siren.

The siren screeched that did no effect to you. You struggled with your swimming. Lukas was struggling from your grasps and you were running out of air. You gritted your teeth and kicked faster.

You gasped as you both got to the surface. Lukas was still yelling stuff at you in Norwegian as he coughed. You dragged him to the shore and laid him against the beach.

"LUKAS WAKE THE HELL UP!" You yelled and pinned him down trying to calm him down.

His eyes were still dull as if he was under the siren's influence.

"I swear that you can be an ass." You bit your lip and slapped his face. "WAKE UP! IT WAS ALL JUST AN ILLUSION."

He yelled things in Norwegian at you. Probably curses, but you didn't care. You started to yell back at him in Dutch and slapped him again.

"Kom op je idioot!" You screamed. "Wil je niet om de wereld te laten zien de gevaren komende? Huh? WAKE THE HELL UP!"

(Translation: Come on you idiot! Don't you want to show the world the dangers coming?)

"LUKAS!" You yelled again and started to cry again. "You piece of shit snap out of it!"

You bumped your forehead against his chest.

"What did you see anyways?" You whispered. "Please, just snap out of it."

He was still struggling and yelling, but no magic came out.

"Please... Just please... Snap out of it... Wake up you damn idiot." You tightened your grasp around his wrists. "You can fight this. You snapped me out of Mark's words. Come on!"

You cried as the tears landed on his wet parka. You let go of his hands and dug your face into your palms. You hiccuped and sniffed as you cried.

"Come on you emotionless bastard!" You cried.

You looked up from your hands to see Lukas blinking with a sense of absentmindedness in his eyes. Somewhat distant and lost. Looking directly at the sky.

"Thank god." You immediately hugged him with no hesitation.

He was surprised by your sudden actions. You dug your face into his shoulder and sobbed. You tightened your hug around him.

"You're alright, thank god." You sighed in relief. "I thought you were going down."

"What happened?" He asked.

You looked up at him shocked.

"Y-You don't remember?" You asked. "You almost got yourself killed! By a goddamn siren!"

He rose his eyebrow in confusion as you sighed.

"Never mind. What matters is that you didn't drown and I-" You cut yourself off and shook your ahead. "Whatever, lets get changed I'm freezing. Also don't you ever do that again, capice? I got worried and I thought that you were going to die by kissing that goddamn woman- ohohohoh, you got your first kiss from a fish woman."

You got off of him with a tint of red hue on your cheeks from the cold. You were shivering. You teeth chattered like those prank skulls. You walked away from the Norwegian babbling more nonsense as he got up.

As you walked away, he smiled secretly and whispered.

"I'm sorry."
