"That's our baby?"
"Fawn, you can't be picking up the hay bales by yourself. We have been over this a million times, no heavy lifting. You are five months pregnant." Dan Hargrove firmly tells his spunky yet shy wife Tylee.
She sighs in annoyance and let's him take the alfalfa hay. "Teddy bear, I'm tired of not doing anything and I still have four more months to go. Please at least let me give all the horses their oats?"
He can't stare into her soft, loving yet pleading eyes without giving in. "Okay, my fawn, but only their oats." The bright shining smile, like that of a kid in a candy store, that graces her face makes him too smile. He watches as she measures just the right amount of oats into each bucket. As she places the bucket in the stalls she rubs the horses in their favorite spot and whispers sweet things to them. When she gets to her prized horse, Willow Wind, he listens intently to what she gently tells the mare.
"Hey girl, you look good," Tylee tells the buckskin as she runs her hand over the bulging tan like colored belly. "You and me are in the same boat, huh? About to pop and still months to go." She giggles and rubs the sleek neck. "That's okay though, these too little ones are going to be best friends."
Dan finds himself holding back tears as he watches Wind stretch out her neck and sniff Tylee's round protruding belly. Ever since he met Tylee and saw her with her horse he knew the connection ran deep, but them both expecting at the same time made him realize just how much they meant to each other. It suddenly hits him why Tylee has not gone against doctors orders and his firm wishes and ride more than she has. Because she can't ride Wind. Instead she spends her time brushing the mare and giving her the extra time he knew they both needed.
"Teddy Bear? You in there?" She asks wrapping her arms around his torso.
He smiles and kisses her forehead. "Of course I was just thinking."
She nods and lays her head on his chest. Her nose breathes in his piney scent while her eyes close slightly in contentment. "You hungry, teddy bear?"
He kisses the top of her head. "I am always ready to eat your amazing cooking."
She giggles as he takes her hand and leads her towards the house. In the small utility room she hangs her palm leaf hat on the first peg and her light jacket on the one under it. He does the same then kisses her cheek and heads towards the kitchen with her following right on his tail. He spins around and wraps his arms around her. "How's the baby?"
She smiles and rubs her hand over her belly. "Good as a pig in mud, teddy bear."
Chuckling he hands her a glass of water. "Good, my fawn."
She nods. "Who's cooking because I am past ready to eat!"
He laughs and opens the fridge. "How's leftover corn casserole and green beans?"
"Sounds good."
He smiles and wraps his arms around her. "I'll warm it up and call you when it's ready. You go sit on the couch and rest, okay?" She glares at him and he glares back. "Fawn I can see it in your beautiful green eyes. You are tired."
"But teddy bear-"
"No buts. You are sleeping for two so go rest."
Slowly her fake frown turns into a little grin and she quickly plants a kiss on his cheek. "Okay, but you are doing the dishes."
He shakes his head with a chuckle. "Deal." His mind slips back to when he first met her and it was all he could do to get her to talk to him. Boy how far she has come. Sure, she still doesn't talk to others much but she talks to him ten times as much as she used to.
After the couple eats they settle onto the couch to watch a movie. Tylee snuggles up against Dan's side and he wraps his arm around her. His hand comes to rest on her ever growing baby bump and a smile slips to his lips. Being five months into her pregnancy Tylee has begun to feel little movements from the baby and can't wait until Dan is able to feel them too.
Halfway through the movie he moves his hand around on her belly and kisses her forehead. He watches as a smile spreads across his wife's face. "What are you smiling about, my fawn?"
She picks his hand up and moves it slightly to the left on her belly. "Can you feel that, Teddy Bear?"
He stares intently across the room at nothing in particular as he concentrates on feeling movement beneath his hand. A smile wider than the Sequoia trees are tall spreads across his face as he feel a little ripple. He meets her happy gaze with his equally happy one. "That's our baby?"
She smiles and nods. Instead of saying anything he captures her lips with his.
