Chapter 5: Nightmares, Training, Court
A scream tore through the room. Frightened, I bolted awake, it took only seconds to realize it was me. I whimpered, and looked around frantically. I was still in Father's bed, Guinevere was on his left, while I was on his right. Father was asleep in the middle. I looked up, there stood the man with the scars all over his face. I screamed again. I backed up until I couldn't move any further. The man laughed wickedly, then pulled out a knife. Before I could summon my magic, he brought the knife down on my stomach, I curled into myself as pain shot through me. Almost as fast as the man had stabbed me, black filled my vision, and I was lost.
"Yarina!" A voice cried. "Yarina! You need to wake up!" Another cried. My hand scrambled to reach under the pillow, I felt the cool of metal on my hand, and I gripped the knife, the bolted up. "Yarina! Calm down, daughter!" Father cried. My eyes grew wide at the sound of his voice. My grip on the dagger loosened, and it fell to the bed. Tears streamed down my face as I brought my hands to my face. "I didn't injure either of you, did I?" I whispered. "No, we are okay." Father answered. I nodded, and quickly composed myself. I brought my hands down, and stared straight ahead, not looking at Father, or my sister. "I am sorry, it is right for a princess to wake up screaming because of a nightmare." I said, getting out of bed. As I stood, my eyes wandered to the window, it was still dark, so I guessed we only got at least an hour of sleep, before I woke up screaming. "I will leave you two, to go back to sleep." I said, voice as hard a stone. I walked to the door, and looked at the floor. There was a few drops of blood. I let out an almost inaudible whimper. Then with a wave of my hand, my outfit changed into my battle outfit. Then with another wave, the blood was gone. Then I stood tall, and walked out the room as I summoned my dagger.
I went straight for the training grounds. One of the only places that can take that damages when I'm upset. I using my daggers, I took down as many targets as possible. I threw my dagger at the nearest target, then as I turned, I summoned another, then threw it at another. I repeated this about sixty times, before I heard the footsteps. I froze. Is it the man that attacked Father last night? I asked myself. The footsteps got closer, I needed to act...now. Casually, I walked over to one of the targets, and pulled out my dagger. I examined it, and ran my hand down the design. The handle was a dark green, with a silver snake wrapped around it. The snake had emeralds for eyes. As for the blade, it was long and it came to a point, not very sharp, due to being used, but it was shape enough to kill. A smirk played on my lips as I quickly turned around, and flung the dagger at the unexpected guest. I let out a cry when I realized who I had aimed the dagger at. My hand flew out, and the dagger stopped just inches from his head. I sighed with relief when it appeared in my hand seconds later. "I'm sorry, Father, I didn't see you coming." I said. Father's hands were shaking visibly. He knew how deadly Guin and I were together. But even apart, we are just as deadly. I walked up to him, and grabbed his hands. "Father, are you okay?" I asked. Father shook his head, then answered me. "Yes, I am fine. I should not have snuck up on you like that." He said. "No, it was my fault. I was paranoid." I explained. Father smiled. "I have a few minutes before I must be in court. Care for some company?" He asked. He still had that smile on his face, but it had transformed from a quiet smile, to an all out mischievous smile. "You would make a suitable sparring partner. Hand to hand combat, or weapons?" I asked. "Hand to hand." He answered, then with a wave of his hand, his armor was on.
I stared down my opponent. Sweat ran down my face, as I circled him. Suddenly without warning, my opponent lunged at me. I quickly sidestepped him, sending him into one of the targets. "Oops." I said. Father growled. "Aw, you poor baby." I taunted. "Stop this idle talking, and fight." Father hissed. I let a smirk play on my lips. Norns, was he easy to get worked up. Father was up in a matter of seconds, and we were circling each other again. This time, I lunged at father, and he side stepped me, but before I could hit anything, I teleported out of the way. I ended up right in front of father, and he was smiling. Yes, his signature move when sparring with Uncle Thor, teleportation. This happened multiple times, father would lunge, I teleport, I lunge, he teleports. We ended up just staring at each other at one point, just thinking of our next moved. "Roundhouse kick!" Someone cried, father looked up instantly, and I took the opportunity. As I made my move, Father snapped back into the present...I ended up on the ground...with him over top of me. "Ouch." I said, not from the collision with the ground. But from the pressure that he was putting on me...which was none. Father loosened on the "pressure", which left me room to lift my legs, and kick him in the chest. I scrambled to get up, before he could recover. "Guinevere!" I cried. She was at my side in a matter of seconds, and her armor on. Father got up, while hold a hand to his chest. His eyes narrowed at the sight of the two of us together. That was when the real battle took place. In the end we ended up on the ground laughing, with a considerable amount of injuries. I giggled as I landed on the ground, Guin on top of me, and Father was on top of her. We all were laughing. "That was fun!" I laughed. "Yes, it was." Father said. My smile grew bigger. Guin opened her mouth to speak, but was quickly interrupted by a guard. "Sire, Lady Sif and the Warriors three seek to speak with you." He said. My smile disappeared, and was replaced with a frown. Father stood up, and dusted himself off. "Yes, thank you." He said, dismissing the guard. "Girls, I want you to go back to our quarters." He said. Guin and I were up instantly. "No!" We cried. Father looked taken aback by our sudden outburst. He gathered himself quickly, and looked at us, not at all happy. We stood straight, and put our heads down. There was an awkward silence for a few seconds, then father cleared his throat. We looked up, and he had donned his ridiculous helmet, and Gungnir. He looked very pleased with himself. I cocked my head slightly to the side, and looked at Father confused. I only looked away from him, when Guin tapped my on the shoulder. "What?" I asked. She waved a hand at my person. I looked down, and noticed I was in my green coronation dress. I looked up, and noticed that Guin was in her coronation dress...she was also wearing a sort of crown, around her forehead. Dumbfounded, I pointed to her forehead . She looked at reproachfully, then placed a hand on her head, only for her hand to come into contact with the crown. "Huh?" She asked, not at all intelligently. She, much to my surprise, pulled it off carefully. Feeling Slightly jealous, my hand went to my forehead. I was met with a metal band. Carefully, I pulled it off, and turned it to face me. It was a green color, with a gold gem in the middle. I ran my hand over the beautiful green band, and gold gem. I looked up at Guin, and she was smiling at me. It was time. Time to be the the princess I am. Time to grow up. I nodded, and together, we placed the crown back on our foreheads, then we walked until we faced each other. With another nod, we turned and faced Father. He was smiling at us. Being the respectable gentleman he is, he held out his elbow for me to grab, but I shook my head politely, he needed to hold Gungnir, and if I got the to hold his arm, and Guin doesn't it wouldn't be fair. He seemed to read my mind, and nodded. Then he turned, Guin and I filed in behind him, smiles on our faces. We walked through the halls until we finally made to the throne room. Father walked up the stairs and then sat on the throne. I followed him up, and sat on the left armrest. Guin sat on the right. Father looked at us, then nodded. I peeked over his head and looked at Guin, she was smirking. "Show them in!" I called to the guards. Before I knew it, Sif and the Warriors three came in. Sif, went right to business, not ever bothering to look up. "All-Father, we must speak with you urgently!" She said. After she spoke, she came to an abrupt stop. Father smiled, mischief glinting in his eyes. "My friends." He spoke. I had to hold back a scoff. "Where's Odin?" Fandral asked. "Father has fallen into the Odinsleep. Mother fears he may never awaken again." He said, sitting up. "We would speak with her." Sif demanded. "She refuses to leave my father's bedside. You can bring your urgent matter to me." Father said placing his free hand on his chest. To appear more intimidating, Father stood up, head held high, to be truthful, he was truly intimidating. I snuck a glance at Guin, and she nodded, I stood up, and went to Father's side. "Your King." He said. They all kneeled hesitantly. "My King, we would ask that you end Thor's banishment." Sif spoke, still kneeling. "My first command cannot be to undo the All-Father's last. We're on the brink of war with Jotunheim. Our people need a sense of continuity in order to feel safe in these difficult times. All of us must stand together. For the good of Asgard." Father spoke. Sif, looking slightly angry, moves to stand, but Fandral quickly stops her. "Yes, of course." Fandral spoke. "Good. You then awaiten for my word." Father said, beginning to turn around. "If I may, beg the indulgence of your majesty to perhaps reconsider..." Volstagg, who had stayed quiet through most of this spoke up. "We're done!" Father snapped. They quickly stood, almost all of them glaring at Father. I sighed with relief when they left. Father had walked back to the throne. I filled in the gap between Guin and I, we then turned. My gaze immediately snapped to father. Gungnir leaned up against the throne, abandoned. Father sat on the throne, head in his hands. I could see his shoulders shaking. I looked at Guin, and she looked at me and be both knew father was crying silently. Then and there, I realized that I could never show weakness in front of father, I had to stay strong. Then and there, I realized that I would never leave him.
