Chapter Four
I sit up and look at my clock, which reads 6:00 a.m. I sigh and fall back onto my bed. I'm already awake and normally get out of bed. My clothes are all wrinkled. After getting ready for the day, I look at myself in the mirror. I had to wear a uniform, so I'm wearing that. I check the clock again, 6:30 a.m. I check my phone to see how far my school would be by walking. It was an hour long walk. My school starts at eight fifteen. I walk slowly down the stairs, then make myself scrambled eggs and coffee. After I finish both, I start my walk to school.
Everything on my walk is beautiful. I walk up to the school, It's eight. I called Brant, and he answers on the third ring,
"Hello?"
He still has a morning voice. I wish he was cursed with waking up at six every morning.
"Brant? Are you almost here?"
"Crap."
"Did you forget about school?"
"Uh... Slightly."
"Gosh, Brant. Well, you have fifteen minutes. Why didn't mom remind you?"
"She's not awake yet, I think."
"Okay. Well, hurry up and get here or you'll be late."
"Ugh, okay."
I cut the call.
I walk into school realizing that he will be late. I go to get my schedule.
I look hurriedly for my first class, after five minutes of searching for my math classroom. I stop at a randow. The first person I try to stop ignores me entirely. The second person gives me really vague 'directions', which lead me to the bathroom. Well that's good to know too. I try another person...this person...stops.
"I'm actually passing that way anyway, so just follow me."He mumbled in a groggy morning voice.
Gosh, what time did these people wake up? It was like they were all zombies. I trail behind him. Finally, I make it to Math and I step in behind him. I'm glad this is the first class of the semester because that means, I won't hate it as much. Then, I look at the teacher. He looks mean, I hope he isn't too hard. I'm bad at math.
Finally, the math class ended. He was mean. I only had a few moments to find my next class.
Eventually lunch came. At lunch I find Brant. He of course was surrounded by... People. I see everyone going to their own seats and people. I walk to Brant. I don't really care who he's around.
"So Brant. What time did you show up at?"
He looks at me and smirks,
"I'll have you know I made it on time to school."
"Yeah, then never made it to class."
"Well, I made it to the end of my first class..."
"Well at least you did that."
"I did."
I roll my eyes. Then, we get our lunch.
I say to Brant, "So, where are you sitting?"
He glances at me and winks, "With you of course."
For some reason, that makes me feel warm and my smile widens.
"Aww really? Good, I was hoping I wouldn't have to sit alone."
Brant beams back, "Come on."
We find a table, and few of Brant's friends sit by us. I haven't really met anyone yet... so...
"Hey guys."
"Hey Brant. So how is your first day of school."
It seems that Brant knew them before today.
"Good... This is my little sister Ivy."
They all look at me. I almost laugh, I don't know who they thought I was, but they all seemed surprised. One of them brave saying something.
"Hey...anyway,"
I roll my eyes, Brant's friends seem great.
Throughout lunch, Brant's friends sort of ignore me. Brant kept trying to bring me into the conversation, it was sort of an uphill battle. I really need to make some friends so I don't have to go through that again.
After school. We eat dinner as a family. Then Brant leaves. I don't bother asking where he's going.
I do my homework, then read my book.
I wake up, then look at my clock. Of course it's six. I sigh and get ready for my day, then eat cereal. I walk to school again. I'm tired today for some reason. Finally, I arrive and walk through the doors. This time I go to the first person I see. I walk straight up to them and say,
"Hey, can you help me out? I need to find room 109."
He seems like he's going to brush away. I'm not letting that happen this time.
"I'm Ivy."
I practically force him to shake my hand. He smirks,
"Hi, Ivy."
"So, can you?"
I follow him as he walks. I'm going to learn his name soon hopefully. Ugh, not that it matters.
"Can I...what?"
"Help me find room 109...please?"
He looks at me quizzically. Then after walking a few feet, it's like he knows I will just be there if he doesn't relent. So he sighs, then says,
"Sure, follow me."
"Oh thank goodness, I thought for sure that you were going to walk away or something. So, I didn't catch your name."
"It's Drew."
"So your whole name is Andrew?"
Why I asked that, who knows.
"Yes..."
"Nice to meet you Drew! You're the first person I had the honor of meeting...from my grade...in this school!"
"'From your grade?'"He says, raising an eyebrow.
I flush slightly, "Well you see, my brother Brant, is a Junior so he introduced some of his lame friends to me. I don't think they should count, they're lame."
There's a slight pause, why am I so awkward? Then Drew finally speaks,
"So, you're a Sophomore?"
"Yeah. Wait, are you a Sophomore too? Or was I wrong in assuming you're the same grade as me?"
"Yeah, I'm a Sophomore. Okay, here we are, room 109."
I beam. Then frown slightly,"Thank you. Are you in this class too?"
"Yep."
I walk in while he walks in behind me. I sit down in a random seat and class begins.
After class, I make a decision to be creepy. I quickly grab my books. Then, I look for where Drew is. He is sitting towards the back. I stay in my seat seeing if he will leave first or what his plans are. He keeps sitting. He might be asking the teacher something. I need to go to my next class. I stand and slowly make my way out of the classroom.
Looking back at Drew. I look at my schedule. My next class is chemistry. Great. I start making my way towards a random place.
I find myself back at room 109...I walk a whole circle. How did I miss it? I'm about to be late. Then Drew walks out of the room and I feel myself brighten. I slightly walk toward him and lightly tap his shoulder while saying,
"Drew!"
He turns and looks at me quizzically. I see dots for a moment. I shake my head, and they clear up.
I say to Drew while remembering I'm going to be late, "Remember me from before? Well, I'm lost."
"Well....hi." Then he sighs, "what's your next class?"
"Chemistry."
He looks at me weirdly, "Can I see your schedule?"
"Sure."
I hand it to him.
"Alright. I have this too."
We walk a few feet, then...there it is...
"I'm confused at how you missed it."
My eyes widen.
"I am too. I swear I looked here and it wasn't here before!"
He chuckles.
"Alright come on."
We walk in together. I feel a headache forming.
Drew actually sits by me this time.
After Chemistry. Drew walk's out with me this time.
"Okay, I'm going to help you find your next classes, because I'm scared where you will end up if you couldn't find this class, that was like three doors down."
I smile at this. "Thanks."
We both walk in silence. I'm all happy though, because Drew is voluntarily showing me where my class is. When we get to my next class, Drew says,
"I don't have this class, but if you want I can come back and show you where your next one is."
I smile up at him. "YES."
He raises his eyebrow at my enthusiasm.
"Thanks!"
Then I rush into my class. Drew, true to his word, comes after the class. Then shows me to my next one. I still have a headache.
After this class it's lunch.
I walk into the lunch room really unsure.
"Hey."
For some reason, I jump at the familiar voice. I look to see Brant.
"You startled me!"
"I see."
He says this with a sort of smirk. I roll my eyes, then we get our lunch. I sit by Brant and his friends. Apparently, making friends doesn't change my lunch spot. I eat my lunch with Brant's friends. Why is he friends with them?
Finally schools over.
"Ivy. You ready to go?" Brant calls to me.
I look over at him. I still have a headache, but it's not getting worse...really, but it's not getting better either.
I say to him, "You know what Brant, I think I'm actually going to walk home. Just let mom know okay?"
"Really? Are you sure?"
"Yeah, hopefully it will refresh me."
My headache is starting to make me groggy.
"Okay, if you're sure."
"Thanks Brant, I will probably ride home with you tomorrow."
"Okay. See you, Ivy."
I smile and give him a slight wave.
He drives away. I sigh. Then, I sit down on the curb, Just to collect my thoughts. The homesickness was starting to come, the feeling of missing things. I couldn't look past it any more. I had been ignoring it like it was a plague. For some reason, I couldn't feel any of this at my 'home' , my new 'home'. It represents all that had been replaced. I try to get out of this homesick stupor. I take a deep breath, it doesn't help me at all. I am not really clear on why we had to move. I also don't know why my mom accepted it so easily. I take another deep breath. Why w-
I feel a soft tap on my shoulder that makes me jump up off the curb and into a standing position. I turn to face a girl. She looks concerned. She smiles softly at me.
"Hey... I'm sorry to bother you, but are you okay?"
I smile back at her. Then stammer, "Oh, uh, well, you see. Yeah I'm just... feeling a little homesick."
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah..." Then I freeze for what feels like forever. My headache is making me muddled. After scolding myself for blaming my headache, I stick my hand out for her to shake. Then say,
"I'm Ivy."
She smiles and takes my hand. Then replies, "I'm Octavia. Nice to meet you."
"You too!"
"So I take it you recently moved?"
"Yeah... I was just taking a moment to... feel my losses, you know?"
"Yeah..."
This is really awkward.
"So, how are you getting home?" I ask even more awkwardly.
"Oh, I have to walk."
"Oof. well I didn't 'have to walk' per say. But since I was having this awful... homesickness, I wanted to walk. Now I'm second guessing my decision."
She laughs lightly at my rant.
"I see. Want to walk together at least until we get to a fork or something?"
"Of course!"
We begin to walk towards my house. I hope she doesn't live far from me because I plan to walk all the way to her house, then just go from hers to mine.
"So, I hope you don't mind me asking, where are you from?"
"Kentucky, it was a small town."
Why can't I say things properly?
"I see. How many times have you moved before that?"
"None besides this. Have you ever moved?"
I'm trying to keep the conversation. Not let it die out.
"Actually, I have not. I've lived here my whole life, most people here have."
I stop for a second. Then I say,
"I'm glad for you, for that. Moving is awful."
Then I continue walking.
"I am too."
"So how do you like this school?"
I smile at her attempt to start a conversation.
"Pretty good. My brother, Brant, go's here too, but he's a Junior."
I glance at her as I'm saying this. Did her eyes widen...
"Oh... that's cool!"
But her voice has a tremor in it. I decide to not mention it.
"I hope we have some classes together."
"I think I saw you in one, can't remember which though."
"That's great! Oh...also, I have a huge favor to ask you."
She looks at me quizzically, well saying, "Yes? What is it?"
"Can I sit with you at lunch?" I don't pause to hear her answer, "You see, I've been stuck sitting with Brant and his friends. It's super awkward and they hardly talk to me."
She laughs, "Of course Ivy! I probably would have offered if you hadn't asked!"
"Thank you!"
Then she stops in front of a house, my house is only a few blocks down. She smiles at me and says,
"This is me."
I smile back and say. "I'm only a few houses from here."
"Fancy! Well I got to go. It was great meeting you! See you tomorrow, in class or at lunch!"
"Okay bye."
I walked joyfully the rest of the way, 'home'. I have finally found a place to sit for lunch.
