Chapter One
THIRD POV
A young man of twenty-three marched back and forth down the hallway of a hospital in Chicago. His back rigid, face void of all emotion, and muscles tensed for an attack. A fierce cry from the room in which his thoughts were focused caused him to cringe inwardly. They were different cries than those he heard on the battlefield. A woman breathed rapidly in pain, trying to follow the directions of the nurse situated to her side while a doctor prepped her for the withdrawal. The nurse suddenly felt guilty, setting this young lady up. Seeing the future mother in pain, she just wanted to curl up into a ball and die. Why did she have to be picked for this assignment? Why did she even have to follow their orders? The doctor was grinning evilly to himself as he watched the woman cry out in pain. The experiment would be in his hands within minutes. He would finally be trusted and promoted to a higher rank within the system. The mother gave a large scream and the doctor slipped back into his training. "Okay, you can now start to push. When the next contraction hits you, take deep breaths and push down." The woman nodded her sweat-laden face and her eyes blazed with determination as she panted. Five painful and loud minutes later, the new father was allowed in to see his new baby girl. The mother laid in the bed, exhaustion weighing down her whole body, as her breathing finally started to even out. The man's breath caught in his throat at the sight of his darling daughter. There was no doubt in his mind that he would spoil her rotten. She was his little princess. He gently took a necklace out from his pocket and placed in around her chubby little neck, it gently resting on her chest. Her eyes opened at the odd feeling of coldness on her chest and the new father gently gasped at his daughter's eyes. They were a bright purple, almost lavender in color, and displayed joy and confusion. He chuckled to himself and walked over the his wife. "My love, meet our daughter." The mother smiled dazedly while she looked down at her hard work. The baby's eyes stared into the young woman's and she gurgled happily. Tiredly, the woman kissed her daughter's head and hugged her tight, fingering the necklace gently. The nurse reminded herself of her task at the doctor's glare and stepped carefully toward the new mother. "What would you like her name to be, Miss?" The wife smiled at her husband and looked toward the nurse, pride shining in her eyes. "Scarlet, Scarlet Opal Sartenescu." It was a little prayer between the couple, SOS or Save Our Souls. They hoped that their daughter would be able to help them repent for taking so many lives in the battles they had fought in the army. They felt guilty every time they pulled the trigger, but this was their second chance, their beautiful baby girl, Scarlet Opal Sartenescu.
~Time Skip A Few Hours~
The nurse, heading towards the hospital nursery, nervously tread down the hall as she waved and smiled at everyone she passed. She clutched her overly large purse in one hand, and her long jacket in the other. The purse was almost completely empty other than the fact she had her scrubs and a drugged rag in there. She felt a wrenching in her gut and walked slightly faster towards her destination. She always left through the back doors after checking out, and the other staff never knew why, but didn't question her, as she was good at her job. Today, that would be a grave mistake. The nurse quietly slipped into the nursery as she heard multiple snores and rustles throughout the room. After taking out the drugged rag, she quietly opened the chamber and gently placed it on top of the baby's face. At feeling the weight on her face, the baby's eyes widened, by before she could exhale the loud scream building within her lungs, the drugs kicked in, leaving the nurse with a baby girl unable to awake for hours. She quickly looked around and gently unclasped the necklace from around the baby's throat, deciding to give it back to her when the girl escaped, not if, when. She had to follow their orders now, but if she could help the baby girl later, she would readily give up her life. Tears threatened to fall down her face as she gently put the angel in her purse, covered her with her scrubs, and zipped the purse closed until it was a quarter of the way still open. The nurse quickly stuffed the rag in her back pocket and walked brusquely outside to the waiting car with the earlier doctor in it. As soon as she put the purse in the backseat of the Honda Civic, the doctor smiled wickedly and drove out of the back parking lot, heading towards their secret headquarters.
