"Spoiler alert, did you know that gemini witches are born different?" I ask Alicia who is sitting opposite me with another book about Covens open wide on her lap.
She raises and shakes her head. "No, I didn't. I don't know much about other Covens, just mine Leo."
"All right listen to this," I carry the big textbook with both my hands, who knew Covens had so much contexts? I bring the book to my face as I change my sitting position to criss cross. My back is starting to ache. "Gemini witches are always born in pairs: either females or males. It's always rare to have a female and male Gemini. It happens almost once in seventy years. Same genders Gemini are perceived as the same because they share the same heart and soul. That isn't the case for different genders Gemini. Like most Gemini who wouldn't be able to do magic without the other and always depend on each other. The difference in their genders breaks the bonding and connection barriers that makes them Gemini. Their heart and soul are halves but can never be whole and same. All same gender Gemini are born with the same everything except from appearances and looks, but different gender Gemini are different on all levels. One being genuinely good and other bad."
I stop reading and look at Alicia, who swallows. Now we're somewhere.
"When one of the Gemini dies, the other loses his or her powers and it has been said that they would never be whole again. That isn't the case with different gender Gemini. When one of them dies, the other can absorb his or her powers for himself without any consequences–" I slam the book shut and drop it on the ground. "Without any consequences? What the actual fuck? Does that make any sense to you?" I ask Alicia.
She closes her book and shakes her head. "No, it doesn't. How is it fair that when one of the same gendered gemini died that the one remaining will lose their powers with the dead one? And it's not the same from different gendered. Do you think that's what Caleb did? Absorb his sister's powers?"
I sigh and lean against the wall. "Maybe. Maybe not. He told me he wasn't supposed to do magic without his twin sister but clearly he doesn't know about these or he knew and lied, either way what I read makes totally sense because Claire is obviously the bad gemini and Caleb is the good one?"
"We need to take a break," Alicia suggests and she's right. We've been reading about Gemini witches and covens since Damian returned with huge textbooks from the school library. This is the only thing we haven't heard and it's shocking.
I think it's time to close the chapter on the covens and start researching the wizard himself. Beginning with the search on Caleb would have been great but I wasn't ready yet, I am now. I felt like I needed to know something before reading into him and now I think I do.
I bend to my side to reach for my bag and bring it to my front. "Hope you're hungry? I brought one of everything," I tell Alicia as I unload everything I have in my bag on the floor. "Help yourself."
She smiles and crawls towards me. She closes the opened books I have left in front of me and pushes them aside to give us more space to eat. I toss my bag beside me and grab a bottle of orange juice, I uncap it and throw my head back as I pour the juice down my throat. It isn't cold but it still quench my thirst. I cover it and reach for the chicken sandwich and quickly unwrap it. My mouth salivates before opening my mouth and taking a big bite.
I close my eyes and sigh in relief when the food fills my mouth. It feels like I haven't eaten in months, I'm so hungry.
I open my eyes to see Alicia opening the pizza box and taking a slice.
"Can I ask you something?" After minutes of eating in silence and me devouring my third sandwich, Alicia asks.
I nod, not wanting to talk with my mouth full.
"On Wednesday when I told you about Mr. Di Martino you ran out of the auditorium. Your expression changed. What happened? Did I say something wrong?"
I chew the remnants of sandwich in my mouth and swallow. I grab the half drunk bottle of orange juice and drink it finish before answering Alicia.
"I had already met Mr. Di Martino that morning and he said somethings that brought some bad memories, so when you told me he is Penelope stepdad, I panicked, wondering what she knows."
These past few days has been hard for me, it's one of the reasons why I stopped eating in the cafeteria and why I'm also stress eating. I don't do well with stress and I've been emotionally and mentally stressed since the beginning of this semester. I'm not even focusing on my school work like I should and it sucks because I really want to try my best, but I'm not very good at multitasking.
I haven't been doing much, just hiding from everyone else. I have been skipping classes too because I don't want to run into Mr. Di Martino again and I'm still trying wrap my head around Jessica staying away from me. She hasn't been in the room since we had our stupid misunderstanding and I miss her. I miss having her around. I also miss Nate but I don't blame them for staying away. My life is so much complicated as it and I don't want to drag them down with me. I'm risking Alicia by being here with her because the poor girl doesn't know anything about me and the danger that follow me around, and also the ones I invite myself into.
"What are you thinking about?" Her question breaks into my thoughts.
I look from the sigil symbol on the cover of one of the text books, I didn't even realize I was staring so hard at it. "Nothing much. Are you done eating?" I ask as I begin to pack the leftovers to the side. It's time to get back to work.
She nods. "Yeah."
Once I set aside the coven books to one side, I take the book that contains the greatest Evil or so the title says, there's no author or publisher. The book starts with chapter list, each chapters with different person. My eyes scans the lists, catching some few name along the way like King Ackolis also known as the Cruel King, he died because of a woman. How typically. I learned about him in History of the world. When I get to alphabet S, I notice a particular surname Sylason Sylas and Sylason Marcus: The Greatest Duo Evil. Sounds fitting.
"Found it," I call out when I see Sinclair Caleb listed above the Sylason brothers or are they parent and offspring. It's doesn't really matter, I'm not here for them.
Alicia moves closer to me, I drop the book on the floor to make it convenient for the both of us to read. I swipe the book to page one hundred and fifty seven. Chapter fourteen: Caleb and Claire Sinclair: The Gemini Nefarious.
"Wow, whoever wrote this book must really know them." She comments before we start reading.
Yeah, whoever wrote this book must have known intimately because none of what we've read before mentioned they were supernatural. Some just believed they the twins were troubled while other thought they were possessed.
The book began with their early lives and it actually correlate with what I've learned before but this book confirmed that Claire Sinclair started the fire that killed their parents. She was also responsible for the killing more than twelve people at the foster home.
The paragraph ended with the both of them hung and burned on a tree.
Before the next paragraph is a subtopic: The raise of Caleb Sinclair. The paragraph started off with how Caleb killed his former foster mother Elizabeth Copper by slitting her throat. He was caught by the newspaper boy, who ran and screamed for help. Caleb and his sister were able to escape but not for long. Claire was caught and killed. Caleb was able to get away. The people in the town wanted closure and after waiting for Caleb to come get his sister and no show. They burned her and Copper's body as a sign of evil riddance and hung them on the tree for display. Caleb returned to steal his sister's body from the lab where it was being tested and absorbed her power.
He was on a low for a while but popped up in 1987 where he was a student. Senior year prom after-party was at his house where the students partied hard and all night. The following week parents started reporting their children missing and eventually police found Caleb's house. He was long gone but the bodied of his dead classmates was all the police could find. No one knew how they died but they were all dried of blood when they were found.
"That shit is dark, man," I murmur after reading the horrors Caleb's done. "He kept doing it, he did it once in three years. Go to a new school, invite people to prom and murder them."
"Isn't it weird that he didn't change his name? He kept using Caleb Sinclair like he wanted people to know, like he needed the attention."
She isn't wrong, I mean, why else would he keep the name?
"He stopped in 2008. Why? Why did it stop? What was special in twenty, eight?"
Alicia turns the page and we read about his last adventure. It didn't say much about it. It was almost the same as the last ones we've read only there was a survivor in this one. A girl named Sofia Rodrigo. She was found sitting in front of the burnt house and was crying for Caleb. Dried blood were all over her face and they found her neck punctured like fang marks. She was arrested on spot and when asked to give account of what happened she became hysterical and acted insane. She has been in confinement since 2008. She's in an Asylum, Nosalys. They got her to talk in Nosalys but her memory of what happened was far from what really happened. She was declared insane and sentenced to spend the rest of her life in the Asylum unless she shows improvement.
"Cami, look..." Alicia pulls my concentration from what I'm reading to the picture under the paragraph.
There are three people in the image. Two women and a man. The man in a suit, well, his tie and the first three button were undone. His head on the lap of one of the women while the other had her had on his lap. Blood has stained the top of his white shirt and the woman whose lap he has his head on is bleeding, her neck was bleeding and somehow she still managed to smile at the camera. He was looking at her, the other women was looking at him and she was looking at the camera.
I don't have to look twice to know it's Caleb. Our Caleb. The Caleb in The Vale. He looks exactly the same except from the hairstyle.
"Fuck!" I scream and slam the book.
Damian comes rushing in, he must have heard me scream. "What's wrong?"
I stand up and start pacing the room, clicking my fingers as I think of what to do next. This is the confirmation I need. I mean, I had a feeling it was him. I was sure it was him but actually seeing it is, well, it sucks.
"Okay," I stop and curl my fingers inward in a fist. "Okay, okay. Sofia Rodrigo, can we find out more about her?" I snap my fingers and point at Alicia.
She shakes her head and glance at her wristwatch. "I'm afraid not."
I hiss and slap my palms against the my thighs. "Shit!" Closing my eyes, I take a deep breath to calm down. I open my eyes and ask, "What's the time?"
"It's almost seven," she answers as she shifts to a kneeling position.
"What?!" My eyes goes wide. That can't be right. My hand goes into my pocket and remove my phone. I tap the screen and it lights up. Shit! "Fuck! We've been here for almost eight hours. How did we let time go by us fast?" I ask no one in particular.
"Cami, your date," Alicia reminds me.
"Oh shit, you're right." I walk back to where my stuff is. I begin to pack everything.
"What date?" Damian asks. I almost forgot he's in the room with me.
"I have a date with Caleb," I say as I shove the leftovers into my bag. Not that there's enough left.
"The guy you're researching?"
"Huh uhn."
"Why?"
I roll my eyes. "None of your business." I try not to snap at him. Still angry from his behavior this morning.
"Are you going on a date with him to find out what he knows or...?"
I sit on my knees and sigh. "I'm actually going because I like him, so..." I look back to see his reaction.
"Oh... Okay."
"Yes."
I carry my bag and sling on my shoulder. "We found what we came looking for, thank you. Can you portal us back?"
He stares at me for a moment before answering. "Sure." In a low tone. "Are you sure?" He asks after some time.
"About what?"
He walks closer. "Going on the date, he is dangerous, Cami."
I fold my arms above my chest like a stubborn child and reply, "I can take care of myself."
He shakes his head and drops his hands on my shoulder. "No you can't." He whispers, his gaze fall downward. I know he's thinking about the bracelet. I'm nothing without my powers and I don't stand a chance against a murderer that drains blood from teenagers.
"So what do you suggest I do then, Damian?" I ask, pushing his hands off my shoulder. I can't have him standing so close to me like this and not feel anything. I'm angry at him and right now, I don't want to feel anything except from the anger.
"Find Sofia Rodrigo."
"I was going to do that but she's in an Asylum."
"And?"
Shrugging, I answer, "I've never been."
"Do you want to go?"
I raise my eyebrow. "To the Asylum?"
"Yes, to find out what she knows."
"Okay," I agree.
"Okay."
"But I still have to go in a date with him." I make that clear in case he thinks taking me to Asylum would change my mind about going on the date.
"Why?"
"Because he'd know something is up." And I don't want him on my tail. I want to catch him off guard. I want to hear what he has to say and check the crystal for the truth.
"Be careful."
Famous last words.
