Train G came to a squealing stop in front of the group of teenagers. Jeno tapped his hands against his legs to the beat of the song he was listening to as he waited for the doors to open. Through the windows, he could see the group of kids already boarded. It would be almost impossible to find a seat at this point.
The doors slid open and the remaining people squeezed through. The girl on the previous train squeezed by Jeno and took the last seat available in the train car. She leaned against the wall and covered herself back up with the jacket she used earlier. Jeno grabbed ahold of a bar to steady himself as the train started moving again, but his eyes lingered on the girl.
The girl briefly glanced up in Jeno's direction, but adverted her eyes quickly. The people around her had found their friends and began to have conversations. Though, she stayed tucked under her jacket, lost in her own world.
A hand fell on Jeno's shoulder, causing him to flinch. He turned to see his friend Jaemin.
"You completely missed us," Jaemin chuckled, looking over at the other five boys. Chenle, Jisung, and Haechan were able to catch the seats but Mark, Renjun, and Jaemin had to stand near them.
"Sorry," Jeno apologized with a friendly smile. "I guess I'm just extremely tired this morning."
"Don't worry about it. Do want something to pick you up?" Jaemin extended his coffee out to Jeno as an offering. However, Jeno shook his head to decline.
"Hey, Jeno," Mark called to him. "How was your fall break?"
"It was fine." Jeno started making his way closer to his friends with Jaemin. He looked over his shoulder for a second in the direction of the girl one last time.
"What are you looking at?" Chenle asked as he let out a small chuckle. "Is there a girl catching your attention?"
"Ooh, which one is it?" Haechan smirked. He leaned forward to look around other people in the direction Jeno had glanced. "Hina, Bora, Seohyun?"
"Stop," Jeno told Haechan, smiling in embarrassment. "It's nothing. I just thought I saw someone new."
"Yikes, good luck to them on their first day," Mark muttered. "If they can get passed all the drugs and snotty people here, then they should be fine."
"How old do you think they are?" Jisung asked.
"I think she's my age. I saw her on the previous train I took. She most likely lives on the outskirts of town as well." Jeno put his cold hands in the pocket of his sweatshirt. "We must live close to each other."
"Is she cute?" Haechan questioned, raising his eyebrows.
Jeno gave him a long look before shrugging his shoulders. "I-I don't know, I mean—"
"Why are you stuttering?" Renjun laughed. "She must be cute then."
"Shut up." Jeno leaned against the pole he was holding onto, pressing his cheek against his hand wrapped around it. "I don't even know her."
Mark snickered and lightly pat Jeno on the back. The boys continued on with talking about their break. Jeno spent most of fall break with his dad practicing basketball. His dad was adamant when it came to pushing Jeno. There was a determination for his son to be the best he could be. Maybe it came from a past of not accomplishing much in his own life that forced its way to his view on Jeno.
Jeno's older sister came home from college on her own break. It was nice to have all of the family around, especially because Jeno missed his sister. She was incredibly close to him and used to always be there when he needed help. Now that she's in college, he feels more lonely at home with his parents often at work and her gone.
When Jeno gets home after school, no one is home until late. He's forced to play a responsible role in chores and making dinner. Those times with his sister created their close bond.
The train finally came to the stop near the school. Jeno stayed close to his friends as they found gaps to slide through and get off. They merged with the large group of kids walking to the building.
"I'll see you guys later," Mark told the rest of the boys as he started to go to his grade's hallway. They nodded and waved him off. Jisung and Chenle went their own ways as well, leaving Jeno, Jaemin, Haechan, and Renjun for their grade.
The four boys turned the corner and looked down the hall. Kids were crowding around lockers, shouting curse words, and throwing things at each other. The school could be compared to the subway. No matter how much teachers try to tell people that kids will be fine here, bullying and drugs are still a big problem amongst the students. Things can easily get out of control.
Haechan sighed at the sight of people already back in the groove of things. "Welcome back to hell," he muttered before walking into the mess.
