2 - Darkness

Everything went dark.

The muffled sounds of children's sobs were heard, together with the monotonous sound pattern of the train tracks.

It stayed like that for minute after minute, and just when they all started to relax and shift in their seats they all tensed up again as they heard it, the dragging movements, from the top of the roof.

"Everyone stay calm" the conductor whispered, as he was back at his spot, standing with his hand near the hatch, looking prepared.

The question was, whatever was he preparing for?

Olivia kept hiding her face behind her hands, stopping her from casting a desperate look towards the window, but her hands were not big enough to cover her ears, making it impossible to ignore the sounds around her.

It was not the crying children or the beating of her own heart that made her panic. It was the terrifying sound of claws piercing through metal.

And the thought of the possible size of those claws to be able to damage the thick plate.

In mere moments the movements had spread from the roof to the side of the cart.

She could hear claws sliding down the side next to her and she quietly moved as far away from the window as she could.

She felt a cold sweat running down her neck.

She heard frightened whispers mixed with comforting low voices, sobs and heavy breathing from the other tables. They all waited, praying the tunnel would end and the cart to be showered in light again.

"All personnel" a voice whispered from the radio attached to the conductor's vest "C-cart five is c-compromised, l-lock all passageways."

The old man reacted by pressing another round button but also turning a key.

A loud metallic thud was heard outside both ends of the wagon. And whatever was hanging on with their claws all over the sides went ballistic by it.

Fists smashed through the windows, claws scraped the weathered metal and demonic screams echoed through the air.

Pieces of glass flew through the air and Olivia immediately reacted by hiding underneath the table, crunching down the best she could in her little black dress.

She couldn't stop herself from taking a peek, as she felt more secure in her new hideout.

The window bars rattled on every side of the wagon, as they tried to press their body's through.

She watched shimmering dark grey arms with sharp long claws bursting through the glass.

One got a hold of a curtain and ripped it off the wall.

Another managed to grab a chair through the chain net and used it to smash the remains of the window from the inside. Clearing it from sharp ends.

She couldn't ignore the thought that it was a clear act of intelligence, but whatever thoughts she had were abruptly interrupted.

Her heart raced, she squeezed her eyes shut as the loud thud was heard right in front of her. Her eyelids flickered and she met the blue gaze of the conductor.

"Do not look up" he hissed as he pressed his cheek against the ruby coloured carpet and closed his eyes.

She could see his knuckles changing from a peach to a bright white as he tightened his fist around his radio, trying to silence any sound that might emit from it.

And there they lay, in fear and without knowing what would happen next.

The chair flew through the air and she could hear the terrifying sound of victory echo around the outside of the train.

A big mass of feet and hands moved towards the now cleared window and she instantly realised this was it.

This was the end of her life. Thank god she was well dressed, she snickered to herself. She always had a macabre sense of humor.

Her hand quickly moved to reach out to the old man. He gratefully took it and gave her a slightly pained smile.

That's when she noticed he was bleeding from four big claw marks on his upper arm.

She could hear them gather around the open window, chattering to each other like squeaking hyenas.

They fought for domination, to be the first one to enter, but why? To be able to make the first choice of who to kill? Or who to eat?

Tears started to run down her cheeks and created a dark red stain in the carpet underneath her.

She wasn't prepared to die. This trip wasn't supposed to be the end to her life, it was supposed to be a new beginning!

But just as the thought left her mind, glorious rays of sunlight pierced through the shattered windows and the creatures instantly vanished into thin air.

As the darkness was gone, so was they.

Minutes passed before the passengers started to move around, she heard gentle sobs, glass that was cleared away, chairs moving, feet walking and then a worried voice,

"Miss, are you all right?"

She looked up and met the friendly eyes of the young, lonely man and nodded as she accepted his hand.

"I think so" she whispered and held on to the hand for comfort as she looked around with tear filled eyes.

The conductor got up on his feet with the help of the father, on old and shaky legs he peered around at every single one of them.

No one was badly injured, at least physically.

He took a few steps forward and raised a hand to get everyone's attention.

"Whatever happened here today, won't be spoken of. Do you understand?" He said and met the frightened faces with determination. "It is for the best," he muttered and continued with a sigh "besides, who would actually believe you if you did?"

The end.
