Chapter II
Phineus was awoken in the middle of the night by pressure against his neck, jolting him awake. "Phineus, I would like for you to explain who she is and why she's in my bed." Jason's voice called out to his brother in the semi-dark room as the hand was removed from his neck. "J-Jason...w-well you see. I found her in the woods, and she was bleeding out. I couldn't just leave her to die." He looked over to the window, the only source of light in the room. Jason grabbed his younger brothers shoulders. "Phineus, you can't just bring random women into our home. You should have taken her to a doctor." Phineus sighed. "I couldn't...I found her rather late and she wouldn't have lasted until morning...I needed to do something..." He looked over to the girl laying in his brothers bed, the dim light shining on her face. He stared at her as his brother scolded him, though he wasn't paying any attention to him. He was paying more attention to her, the light shown on a scar spanning from her chin up her cheek. His eyes trailed down the scar to her neck, he stared at the claw markings on her collarbone and the bandaging on her arms. He watched her chest move slowly with each breath she took. He stared at the dried blood that had seeped through her bandaging. Jason sighed softly, shaking Phineus. "Hey, are you even listening to what I'm saying? Phineus?"
"Huh? What?" Janson sighed with fustration. "Never mind." The older male rubbed the bridge of his nose. "You're going to take her to a doctor in the morning yes?" Phineus just stared at his older brother. "I- well, no...I-I was planning on taking her back to the g-"
"Damn it Phineus, you need to take her to a doctor, can't you see she's still bleeding out. She needs more help than what you can give her. You are just a farm worker, who can't even get the job done. I'm surprised you managed to even carry her here by yourself."
"I'm not that weak Jason..." Phineus wasn't going to sit here and listen to his older brother give him a lecture again. He looked at Cora, her mouth was open as she snored softly, unlike Jason, the only other person Phineus had ever heard snore who was sometimes so loud that Phineus couldn't sleep. He watched as her chest slowly shifted up and down. She looked very peaceful when she slept, and she didn't seem too hostile when she was awake either. Phineus was forced to look at his brother when he grabbed his shirt and yanked it to get his attention. "Listen to me dammit, take her to the doctor in town, or I will." Phineus nodded. "Okay, I will..." He sighed out. Cora shifted and made a sound. "...mmmm....ugh....ah..." She muttered softly, looking over to Phineus. "Oh...who is that?" She said slowly lifting her arm to point at Jason. "Oh, that's my brother, Jason..." She nodded looking him up and down. "Meh." The two young men looked at her. "What?" Cora shook her head. "Oh, nothing." Jason shook his head. "So, how are you feeling?"
"Let's see, I have deep cuts on my chest, arms and back, and I nearly bleed out. I'm fine, thank you for asking." Jason sighed, shaking his head. "Don't worry, we're taking you to a doctor as soon as possible." Cora shook her head. "I'm afraid you can't do that...I require that you return me to the gaurd station, you musn't keep me away for too long, they may not search for me and just assume that I am dead." Jason nodded. "O-oh, well when you put it like that...I suppose we have no real choice then do we?" Phineus sighed softly. "Of course, you listen to her and not me. You never think that anything I say is a good idea." Jason glanced at his younger brother. "Because they never work Phineus." Cora looked at the two brothers. "You should give him a chance, it seems you won't let him do what he wants." The older male looked away. "What does it matter, he's staying here to work on the village farm. There's no way he's going to pass the draft test." Cora sighed, inspecting Phineus. "I agree, he'd never make it in, but you're in so he could get drafted by assotiation." Phineus pushed himself out of bed. "I don't want to work on this stupid farm, or get drafted into any sort of militia..." Phineus looked to his brother. "I'm not you and I never will be, and just because I won't doesn't mean that I have to work in this stupid town for the rest of my life." Cora nodded. "Point proven. You're trying to force him to be someone he isn-" Jason intrrupted her. "Who are you to tell me what to do about my little brother?" Cora made an effort to push herself up so she could stand. Jason averted his eyes, concidering she wasn't leaving much to the imagination by standing in front of them like that. Phineus despite already having seen her like this, made sure to stare directly into her eyes, he didn't wish to be presented as rude. "I've see you around on the training grounds, you're good cadet, and I'm going to be your camander once you've finished basic training and you're finishing your more advanced training with me. Then I will have met the requirement to become a general, you being the first memeber of my bregaid." Jason sighed softly. "So what? You aren't incharge of me just yet." Cora shook her head. "You're right, I'm not, but I know who is, and I'm sure he'd love to hear about this."
"It's not like I'm abusing him."
"No, but what you are doing is abusing you power over him. That's enough to get you kicked out of guard training and on porol."
"Aren't you kind of abusing your own power by threatening me like this?"
"No, she isn't. She's trying to give me the rights I deserve Jason. I'm not your dependant anymore." Phineus cut in, awaiting the riticul to come. "You've been an adult for a week Phineus, you aren't exactly experienced." Cora slowly walked towards the men in front of her. "Give him a chance to gain some experience." Jason let out a soft sigh as he gave up on arguing with his higher up, even if they happened to be a woman. He wasn't going to listen to this anymore. "Whatever, you can take her on your own. Like you said you aren't my dependent anymore, so go on and go on your own. You can clearly make your own decisions you're an adult now. So you can also get out of my house, now can't you?" Phineus looked down. "So you're kicking me out?" Jason nodded. "Yes, and take all your strange 'inventions' with you." Cora crossed her arms. "Cadet!" Jason looked at her. "What?" Cora scowled at him. "Treat the boy with respect." Jason chuckled softly. "Perhaps you should mind your own business, you're only a woman any how. You don't belong in the royal guard, neither did your mother." Phineus stayed silent. "Just look at you, what attacked you? A wolf?" Cora glared at him. "You, as soon as I get out of the infirmary and I'm cleared for duty once more, I'm going straight to current commander and telling him about your disrespect towards your brother and fellow guards." Jason shook his head and turned away. "You know, it's a shame that they favor someone who can hold their own against a stupid animal." Cora quickly looked over to her dented, scratched up armor that Phineus had neatly placed in the corner her weapons not there. "You know cadet, you weren't there to see it. But, my entire team died. My general and all. I happened to be the only survivor." Jason shrugged. "So how do I know you wouldn't get your own squadren killed if you were in charge of one?" Cora chuckled. "I'm not reckless, but one of the other guards on my team. He got us caught..." Jason sighed. "Sure, whatever you want to tell yourself. I'll be sleeping out in the den rather than anywhere near you two. Phineus, feel free to do what you want with her while she's here." Phineus balled his hand into a fist. "Are you implicating that I might try to have my way with her? Well, for your information. Unlike you, I refuse to sleep with every girl I come across. I haven't even slept with one." Jason looked at him. "Maybe you can change that tonight Phineus." With that the older male left the room and Phineus climbed back into bed. Cora laid down on Jason's bed and stared at the ceiling. "I apologize for my brother, he's kind of rude." Phineus let out a soft sigh, sitting up looking at her. Cora shook her head. "I'm used to young men being rude. I'm surprised you're not being an asshole or attempting to get me in your bed." Phineus's face quickly turned red. "I'm not that interested in trying to find a wife. I'd probably rather die alone." Cora nodded. "Sounds fair enough, that might be nice actually." Phineus nodded. "Yeah. Yeah it might."
