Chapter 5
Dakota's POV:
Tap, Tip, Tap, Tip. I heard a faint sound ahead of me as I made my way toward the elevator door. I had left the training room and was currently turning the corner to get to the elevator, so I could go back to my room and discuss strategies with Enobaria. Tap, tap, tap. I heard it again, louder this time. I realized they were the sound of footsteps. I snapped out of my thoughts and tried to swerve to the side, but I had already slammed into someone. I had more force on my side, since I was walking faster, so I bowled the poor person over, landing on top of them.
I hear a groan and look down, mumbling a sorry. I'm met with a boy's bright blue eyes. I realize I'm still on top of him and try to sit up, that's when I get a better look at the boy. It's that career from earlier, the tall, handsome on with the blonde hair. He pushes me off him, mumbling to himself. I stand up and brush off my shirt awkwardly, trying not to look embarrassed.
CATO'S POV:
I'm walking through a random hallway. I can't get that tribute from 7 off my mind. Something about her, I can't tell what, but she seemed different. My walk is slow and careful, since I'm lost in thought. I'm about to take another step forward when I feel a small force of weight bowl me over. The person had a small, lithe figure, they didn't way that much, either. I look up and see that it's the district 7 female tribute. Oh no. Okay, just act mad. She can't know.
"Ugh, damn it. Watch where you're going!" I snap, pushing her off me. I kills me to treat her like this, but I have to. I hate that this is her first impression of me. She looks startled, her eyes wide. She looks a little embarrassed. I immediately wish I could take it back, but I know I can't.
"Sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going," she tells me, her beautiful voice making my heart beat just a little faster.
"Yeah, no kidding," I sneer, trying my best to keep up the act. She looks sad for a second, then her eyes fill with hope again. She holds out her hand.
"I'm Dakota. But I usually just go by Koda,"she tells me, still holding out her hand. I resist the urge to take her hand and shake it, I have to seem like a threat, not an alliance.
"Cato," I reply shortly, not taking her hand. I see the district 12 tributes come around the corner. I think their names were Peeta and Katniss.
"Leave her alone, Cato," the male tribute tells me, getting in between Dakota and I. It's funny, she's almost taller than him. I smirk.
"Trying to protect your little girlfriend, Peeta? I bet you don't even know her. Go back to your bakery, bread boy," I jeer at him. His fist clenches and I make a face, raising my eyebrows and widening my eyes. "You wanna hit me, 12? Go ahead, see if you even make to the Games alive," I yell, getting in his face. The female from 12 grabs Peeta's arm and shakes it.
"Come on, Peeta. You heard what they said: no fighting until the Games," she tells the boy. He backs away and glares at me. I laugh and turn away, walking back towards my room to watch the Reapings with my escort, Brutus.
Dakota's POV:
After Cato left, the boy named Peeta turned to me.
"Hey, you okay?" He asks me. The female doesn't say anything, she only glares slightly at Peeta.
"Yeah, I'm fine, thank you," I say to the boy, trying to ignore the female from 12's now heated glare. Dude, what the hell did I do to you, woman? The girl grabs Peeta's hand.
"Let's go, Peeta. We don't want her as an alliance, you say how weak she was!" The girl tells him. The boy glares.
"Katniss, the same thing happened to me, remember? But you knew I wasn't weak. Don't you think we should give her a chance?" Peeta asks the girl, Katniss. She sighs and shakes her head, pulling him away from me.
"I don't see what the big deal is, come on," Katniss groans. The boy finally relents and they walk away, the boy glancing back at me with a sympathetic look on his face.
...
...
I bet back to my floor and watch the Reapings with Enobaria. I see several possible threats, such as Clove, Thresh, and Finch (Foxface). Finch might not be good with weapons, but if she uses her smarts the right way, she could easily win the Games.
I decide it's about time I take a shower. I walk into my room and into the bathroom, stepping into the large, high tec shower. The water's warm and feels nice on my skin. I wash all the dirt and sweat away and step out. I press a button and warm air blasts toward my, drying me within seconds. Okay? So Capital people don't even like to dry themselves on their own? Jeeze. I dress into a tight black tank top and blank pants with a red stripe on the sides. I walk over to my bed and collapse. As my head hits the pillow my eyelids start to close. I relax into a peaceful, dreamless sleep.
