Chapter 4
Dakota's POV:
Jaxon and I are led to the floor that district 7 tributes (us) will be staying on. Led by our escort, we enter a room with a huge couch, kitchen, windows, polished floors, and luxurious furniture. Mae leads me to the room that I'll be staying in, and tells me to get dressed into the clothes laid out on my bed. I nod, and she leaves the room, closing the door behind her. I look at the clothes on my bed. (They are the training clothes that are worn in the picture at the top of the page) I strip out of the dress I wore for the Reaping, and change into the outfit. It's surprisingly very comfortable. I walk over to the mirror in the bathroom and look at myself.
It's the first time I've ever seen such a clear image of myself. We had one mirror back home, but it was cracked and dusty from age. I style my hair in a bun and splash cold water on my face to wake myself up more. I decide I should probably take a shower, but it better to do it later, so I don't keep Mae or Jack waiting.
I walked out of my room to see Jack and Mae sitting at a table with a women I hadn't see before. I walk over and sit down, raising an eyebrow at the women as I do so.
"Hello, Dakota. My name is Enobaria, your mentor," the women said, holding out her hand across the table. I took it and she shook my hand, giving a squeeze before letting go. (Yes, ik that Enobaria is not even from district 7, but bare with me 😐)
Enobaria: (just in case u didn't know what she looked like)
"You two should go off to training, we can talk about strategies and watch the Reapings later," Enobaria says to Jack and I. We nod and head to the elevator. I press the button to go to the training room, and stand off to the side in silence.
"You nervous?" Jaxon asks me, trying to ease the tension in the air.
"Honestly? Kinda. I mean, if I screw up in front of the other tributes, I'm toast! Burnt toast," I add with a small laugh.
He smiles and we laugh together. "At least I know you've still got your sense of humor," he comments. I punch his arm lightly and nod as the elevator door opens. We walk out and are met with the sight of the other tributes. I see a girl with blonde hair shooting a bow and arrow at a dummy several feet away from her. A boy throws a spear across the room that gets so close to me I can feel the gust of wind it creates as it sails through the air. I turn and glare at the boy, putting a hand on my hip.
He puts his hands up in mock defense and mutters sarcastically, "Well excuse me, Your Highness," he bows and then looks up at me and smirks, walking towards me. I scoff and walk towards him. He laughs and mocks, "Look, someone's lost their doll. Why so fragile, sweetheart?" I keep a blank expression, still walking toward him as he approaches me. "Oh, and she's mute, too," He jeers, laughing. I've had enough of you man. You're not even that funny, otherwise, I'd be laughing.
I grab a knife off of a nearby rack and bring it to his neck, grabbing the collar of his shirt with my other hand while smirking. "...you were saying...?" I ask casually.
"Okay, doll. I'll leave you alone," he mumbles, backing off.
I look around and see a climbing course. I smile, I knew exactly what I was going to do. I'd play it like I was an easy target, a weakling. That way I could attract more tributes that would think I was an easy kill, then kill them before they could touch me. I walk over to the ropes course and climb on. After a few minutes of fake struggling, I brace myself and let go, making it look as if I fell on accident. I hear snickers and snide comments and look over my shoulder. I see the blonde that was the arrow shooter from before, the snarky spear boy, a short, brunette girl, and a blonde boy who was actually very attractive. I'm smarter than to fall for another tribute.............right? Nope...ugh fuck it...
I'd still have to kill him anyway. He was just another pretty face. I needed to get back to Rose, no stupid crush was standing in the way. I got up and dusted myself off. I didn't care that they were laughing at me now, because they wouldn't be later. Jaxon jogs over to me.
"What happened? Those careers are looking at you like your an easy kill," he tells me. I only smile and tap the side of my head.
"All part of the plan," I say, leaving the training room to get some rest.
CATO'S POV:
I was watching the other tributes train, looking for any possible threats or allies. The district 7 tributes came out of the elevator and looked around. The girl glanced around the room, her beautiful aqua eyes scanning the other tributes. She was...beautiful. No. Stop, Cato. You can't like her, you can't love her, you just saw her! Besides, she was a tribute. You'd have to kill her at some point.
I sigh and watch as Marvel throws his spear across the room, it almost hits her, I clench my fists. Why was I angry? I watch as Marvel taunts her. They walk toward each other, I can see the girls fist clench, she was mad. I was about to go over there when all 'of a sudden I see the female 7 tribute grab one of the throwing knives off the rack and hold it to Marvel's throat. She says something, but I'm too far away to hear it. Whatever it is makes Marvel back off.
She walks over to the ropes course, almost hiding a smirk. What's she doing? She climes onto the course and almost immediately begins to struggle. After a minute or so she falls to the ground with a thud. Something inside me wants to rush over and make sure she's okay, but I know I can't do that. The careers are laughing at her, but something about her makes me feel like she's hiding something. Maybe she's not as hopeless as she seems...
