Construction of this modern multipurpose arena started in June 2004.  Designed by Peddle Thorp and Crawford Architects it opened in March 2007 and cost NZ$94.8m, of which NZ$68m came from ratepayers.

It is owned by Auckland Council and is New Zealand's first big public-private partnership.  Quay Park Arena Management (QPAM) constructed, owns, maintains and operates the stadium in a deal between the company and Council.  This public-private partnership runs for 40 years until ownership is transferred to the city.

The first concert on 24 March 2007 was by Rock Star Supernova, a reality TV formed supergroup, comprising drummer Tommy Lee (Motley Crue), bassist Jason Newsted (ex-Metallica), guitarist Gilby Clarke (ex-Guns 'N' Roses) and singer Luckas Rossi. 

Initially Vector Ltd held the name rights but on 19 April 2017 these transferred to Spark New Zealand, thus renaming the venue.

As you would expect from a modern purpose built venue, the facilities for both audience and artist are first class. 

The venue hosts many events from galas and industry awards, expos, seminars, presentations, family shows, community events, and of course sport and concerts.
