Amsterdam
Tour Venue Twenty-One
AFAS Live, Arena Boulevard 590, 1101 DS Amsterdam.
aka: Heineken Music Hall
Designed by architect Frits van Dongen, construction of the venue started in 1996 and it was opened in 2001 as the Heineken Music Hall.
It was specially designed for enhanced (pop) music. Sound, according to the experts, does not sound as good anywhere as in the Black Box. Its acoustics are reportedly sublime. Technically it is also very advanced and the layout well planned. Lorries can drive into the hall itself and unload.
The Black Box is the big room performance space. It is a box within a box. There are no pillars, columns or obstacles making sight lines to stage excellent from all viewpoints. On both sides of the room there are two big barrels where visitors can buy drinks during standing concerts.
In addition to the Black Box, there is Beat Box, a smaller nightclub within the venue that is perfect for the after-concert dance party. There are big coloured panels on the walls of the lobby and the massive wall of mirrors at the public entrance give it a welcoming feel.
It is the only venue in the Netherlands that has been nominated several times for the highly regarded Pollstar Award as the best international concert venue.
In 2017, it changed its name to AFAS Live.
