Chapter Two
It was a storm that I was bringing. I knew that fully. I knew it.
Benny was the family favorite. This news would hit the family hard.
It already hit me pretty hard.
Benny has been my best friend since as long as I could remember. Ever since Dave married my mom and brought Benny with him, we'd been fast friends and thick as thieves.
I just... I didn't know anyone who could do such a thing to him. He was a good kid.
My family home loomed in front of me, and all I could do was weakly walk to the front door, hearing the distant hum of the television through the door.
I felt my stomach sink as I knocked, my knuckles almost white from the tight curl I had on them.
There was a few seconds of silence, and then, the door opened. Dave. Ugh.
"Oh! Felix, come on in!" He happily chirped. I held back any annoyance and walked inside, "what brings you?" The look on my face must've given it away that it wasn't anything good, "your mother is in the living room, follow me."
I followed, and my mother smiled as I walked in, but that smile dropped when she saw my face.
"Felix, what's wrong?"
"You both might want to sit down."
"I'm already sitting," my mother joked.
I smiled awkwardly as I sat across from them, looking at the ground before looking back at them.
"Felix, we could always wait for Benny to get here? He said he would be coming to visit today," my mother informed.
"He's...," I swallowed back my fear, "He's not coming."
"What do you mean he's not coming?" Dave chuckled, "he may be late, but he never misses anything!"
I shook my head, "he can't come."
"What? Something happen?" My mother pressed.
"Benny's dead!" I rushed, feeling the shakiness return o my body. "He's dead! My friends and I found him in the library a few hours ago. He's dead. He's fucking d-dead!" I felt water pool in my eyes, choking back a sob.
"What? That's can't be? What happened?" My mother rushed.
"He was murdered. We don't know why or who did it, but he was killed."
"Oh my-" My mother tucked herself away under Dave's arm, and I looked at the ground again.
Dave looked at me sadly, "who's assigned to the case?"
"Lieutenant Ford. And... well me."
"Will you be able to catch my son's killer?"
I nodded, "I'm not going to stop until I find the fucker."
"Thank you."
I nodded again, sighing, "I should go. I'm sorry about Benny, he was better than most of us."
My mother didn't try to stop me as I left, more focused on her stepson's death than any awful feelings that I could've had.
I didn't let it phase me much.
Grief never worked the same for everyone.
It didn't take long for me to go from my mother's house to my own.
My place was a bit of a mess. A courtesy when you're always out on a case or studying.
I went to my couch and flipped down, pulling my laptop into my lap and quickly booting it up.
There had to be something about my brother that I missed. So I looked for it on every outlet I could get my hands on.
His Facebook, his twitter, Instagram, everything.
I was about to give up when I remembered-
"He manages the university Facebook."
I was quickly in the page and decided to scroll. There was nothing specifically evidence, but there was a video posted...
Last night?
I clicked on it, and turned up the volume, making sure to scan every detail my eyes could scan for.
"This is your weekly update on college life. I am sad to report that this will be my last week with this series, the school in general. The school found that self defense was just as bad as actually initiating a fight." My brother sighed, "so, this will be a goodbye. Decided to answer some of the more ridiculous questions I have been asked over the years as my farewell."
I absorbed the information. My brother was in a fight? He was leaving the school? The questions weren't anything spectacular, but the last one bugged me.
"I never thought I'd be one to fight over anyone, but apparently I'd fight for love. It's the reason I got into a fight. This guy was talking about how he'd like to screw this person and I, loving them, got a bit upset at that. I know they aren't the most innocent person around, I know they'd never see me in a romantic light, but a guy can dream. Besides, the fight started because i told the guy that he'd never get laid."
The video ended not too long after. I just stared at my screen in thought, wondering who this mystery lover was, then decided to call who I should've called.
I picked up the phone and texted the number.
Hey, come over. I need to talk to you about Benny. He was murdered and I think you can help the case.
"Straight to the point," I whispered as I sent the text.
I knew he wouldn't be long, even without a reply back, so I got to my feet, setting my laptop on my coffee table and heading to my kitchen to brew some coffee.
I made mine black and I made sure to add cream and milk to the other, pulling a cap of whipped cream from the fridge and shaking omg it, doing a silly swirl on top of the second coffee.
Just as I finished, I heard a heavy knock at the door. When i opened the door, I was greeted with a gentle kiss. If this were any other time, that might've lifted my mood.
This was not every other time.
"I came as soon as you texted," his voice purred softly. Well, pure wasn't quite right. It was worried, but the way it curled from his lips was very cat-like.
I smiled weakly and went to grab his coffee. He closed the door and joined me, grabbing his coffee from my hand and heading over to my couch. I grabbed my coffee and followed. I sat next to him, a foot of space between us.
We silently took a sip from our drinks before setting it down on my coffee table.
I turned towards him, my eyes scanning his features. He was... gorgeous. He had dark frosted eyes, with Scarlett hair that fell into his face in all the right ways. The freckles that scattered his skin were like my own little constellations.
"Thanks for coming Robin," I whispered.
He shook his head, "it's nothing. Is it true, was Benny murdered?" His brows were furrowed, and I could see the loss welling behind his eyes.
"Sadly, yes. I-" I felt tears coming again, but swallowed them back, "he was such a good guy, why did he- it's not-"
Robin pulled me to him, pressing my face into his chest, his fingers running softly through my hair. "There's nothing we can do about it besides figure out who did it."
"Yeah," I said, nodding against his chest, "you're right." I pulled away and looked at him, "was... was Benny being expelled?"
Robin looked at me, then tilted his head, "he was actually. He said it was because the school was stupid."
"I heard it was because of a fight?"
"Yeah. Did you want to know who he fought?"
"Yes," I nodded, "he could be the killer after all!"
Robin nodded, "he was some guy named Leonardo Caesar. I only remember because Benny and him were in a lecture together."
"Do you know who they were fighting about?"
"No. Benny never told me he liked anyone," robin admitted, "it was news to me when I saw his Facebook video. What and idiot...- I'm going to miss him."
"I will too, he was my brother, my best friend. Sure, my best friend is Evan, but no one can replace Benny."
Robin slung am arm around me, "do you need some company?"
"I shouldn't," I said softly, "but right now, I want to let everything go, you know."
He nodded, "I know."
He leant into me and I met him, our lips meeting as rational thought drained away.
I needed this.
