Chapter Twelve

For the first time, I woke up later than I normally did. Andy must've realized something happened.

Just because I understood Rico didn't mean it didn't still sting that he second guessed us.

So when I did wake up, shower, all that, the other two were already up and talking. I hid from view to listen.

"Are you fighting with Felix?" Andy asked, a protective tone lacing his words.

"What?" Rico sputtered, "no."

Andy obviously didn't believe him. He wasn't quick to believe most words, "he would've been up by now if you two didn't have a problem."

"You don't know tha-"

"I've known him for all twenty three years of his life. Believe me when I say, I know him. So, what did you do?"

"I didn't d-" he huffed, "I know I can't change his past, and he can't change it either, it's just hard to get used to the fact he's been with so many people, including you!"

Andy cocked his hip out, placing a hand on it, "I have never seen him head over heels for someone before. He told me how he felt about you, he was scared about his feelings. He's not used to the care you're giving him. No one taught him how to date or do anything."

"Bu-"

"He may have been with a lot of people, but if he didn't love you, he wouldn't be faithful to you."

"What?"

"He only would be faithful to someone he cared about. He was a one night stand guy because he couldn't handle romance. He wants romance with you. He can see a life with you. If it were up to him, he'd ride this fast because that's all he knows. So don't be a dick, he's trying harder than you realize to be normal."

Rico was silent, but I could tell the words got to him.

"Why did you sleep with him if you know he didn't love you?" Rico asked softly.

"Well," Andy began, "because it was the only way I could have him before I realized that it wasn't right. I still love him, he's got something about him that draws others to him, but he has never been drawn to a person before he met you."

"You're a good friend."

"Someone had to be. Apologize to him before this case is solved. I'm not going to ask you to do anything drastic, but maybe don't treat him like a maiden all the time. Just treat him like a normal guy who's into you and who you're also into."

"Thank you," Rico sighed.

"Yeah, yeah. Treat him good or I will be your worst nightmare. I have work to get to."

I stayed in my hiding spot until Andy left and Rico started to make breakfast.

"Morning. I see your up before me," I said warmly, yawning immediately after.

He looked at me, then back at the food, "I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"For being a dick. You're trying hard to slow things down for me and I'm doubting everything. So I'm sorry."

I smiled softly, "thank you, but it's fine. I expected the doubt. I just didn't think it would sting as much as it did."

Rico glanced up at me, guilt in his eyes. "I care about you, more than I've ever cared about anyone before, I want you to know that."

"Same here," I said softly, almost too quiet for him to hear, "it's terrifying."

He finished making his breakfast before walking over to me, grabbing my hands with his own. "Well, I'm scared for every step I make, because there's someone you can compare me to, but, is it alright... if I'm your first boyfriend?"

"Yeah!" I flushed at the happiness and joy in my voice, but that seemed to make Rico happy, so the minor embarrassment was worth it.

He pulled me into a hug and I wrapped my arms right around him. I think I laughed from the happiness of the moment, and I don't think anyone would've been able to blame my excitement.

"We should probably go make our witness statements."

I laughed again, "Probably."

He took my hand in his and we didn't take long gathering what we needed, checking to make sure Evan was good, and heading to the car.

The ride to the station made me realize that we'd have to deal with Rachel again.

Ugh.

Seems that Rico got that too as we got on the steps of the station.

"I hope Tyler will back off," Rico grumbled.

"She's not competition."

Rico chucked at that as we walked inside. As soon as we got in, an officer directed us towards the interrogation room, where they had Jennifer. We quickly walked there and went to the viewing room.

Tyler was doing damn fucking fine in there. She had the right amount of anger and kindness, her own flare. If this was all she was, we'd get along great, but god, she was a fucking bitch.

Rico seemed impressed as well. After a few minutes, Tyler came out, stuck in detective mode, "she says she saw him before she left for groceries. It lines up, but the fact we found poison in his system is making me suspicious."

"Since we know that he was hanged, just like our last victim, isn't it safe to assume that the murder and attempted murder were done by the same victim?"

She glanced up, "Felix, you're a genius! I think I know a motive! I just need you to coax it out of her."

"Cheating husband?" Rico commented.

"Cheating husband." I confirmed.

Tyler gestured for me to go in and I followed her lead.

"Hello Mrs. Kenny."

"I said to call me Jennifer," she corrected with a soft smile.

I shook my head, "it's part of my job to be professional."

"What do you need dear?"

"I just wanted to make sure you're okay, maybe find out possible suspects."

"It wasn't self inflicted?" She asked, mocking surprise.

"Well," I started, "we don't know yet. We sent for a toxicology report to see if there was anything in his system."

She furrowed her brows, you think someone poisoned him?"

"It's possible. So, I have to ask, how we're you and your husband?"

She smiled sadly, "he's been distant I suppose, but I saw tickets to Hawaii in my jewelry box this morning. He was trying to surprise me."

"So things were fine?"

"I would like to think so. We fight sometimes, like most couples."

I took a seat across from her, "what about traffic yesterday?"

It was clear as fucking day.

"It was awful! It took me forever to get to the store."

I caught her lie.

"Mrs. Kenny, we have footage of you at Jim studios yesterday. Why were you there?"

Her eyes flooded with panic, "I was just delivering something for my husband!" She assured.

"So it wasn't to visit the producer Rachel? The women who those tickets really were for."

"I don't know what you're talking about!"

"He wanted to leave, for a more beautiful, more successful woman. You found out and hatched a quick plan. If you poisoned him in the morning, you could swing by the studio and kill her, then swing by home to kill your husband. You then ordered your groceries instead of going inside the store. All so it would seem as if he did it to himself."

"You don't understand what it's like to be hurt so badly! I loved him! We've been together since our freshman year of high school! Over forty years together and he-"

"Mrs Jennifer Kenny, you are under arrest for the murder of Rachel Gomez and attempted murder of the mayor."

Officers rushed in cuffed her.

I walked out of the interrogation room where Rico and Tyler were standing.

"Nice work, what tipped you off?" Rico asked.

I smirked, "there was no traffic yesterday. It was a Sunday morning, most people were at church or sleeping in."

"Clever."

Tyler looked at me, "is it true that he's your boyfriend?" She asked.

"Yeah? I'm in love with him, what did you expect?"

She shook her head, "I have a hard time believing it all." She crossed her arms, "it's just not your style."

"What's my style? I said I'd stop my habits when I fell in love, and I did."

"Let's head out for coffee," Rico suggested.

I nodded, "that sounds nice."

We left before Tyler could protest anymore, meeting a flurry of camera men and women outside.

Right, someone tried to murder the mayor, that would make the news.

"Detectives, is foul play expected?"

"So slow, we actually caught the culprit," I teased, "but you'll have to wait for someone else to finish to report."

"So fast?"

I shrugged, "it's easy as one, two, three to me."

Rico motioned for us to continue on, but Tyler JC rushed down the stairs to us.

"Why not at least we grab a drink?" She offered.

"Not interested."

"At least as a coworker?"

"Yeah," I huffed, "that's all it is. Please give up, I'm not into you." I hooked my arm around Rico and we started to walk down the stairs.

She wasn't happy with that, but decided media attention would not be the best thing at the moment, so she went back inside as Rico and I left, reporters trying to catch glimpses of us.
