Chapter Three
I needed to stop doing it.
He was my brother's best friend for God's sake, and here I was, sleeping with him.
I wasn't even dating him. It was a, 'you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours' type of thing. He wasn't even the only one I was with.
He was just the person I could talk to about Benny. If Evan had been the one to come to my door, I'd be wrapped in his arms instead.
I sighed as I lifted Robin's arm off of me, rolling out of bed.
"You're leaving already?" Robin yawned out, nearly causing me to scream.
"Yeah," I responded, somehow remaining calm, "I have to head down to the station to see if they got anything for me."
"Be safe, Alright."
"I will. You need to get to school."
"If only I were a detective, then I could skip school all the time."
I rolled my eyes as I got dressed, not saying anything as I got my things.
"Kick butt!" He called after me as soon as I left the room. I couldn't help but smile a bit as I headed out.
When I got to the police station, there apparently already was a field of reporters ready to spot me. Lucky for me, I was prepared and was able to sneak in by pretending that I was distraught with something else.
I also didn't go into the homicide department right away.
When I got there, Winston was waiting, talking to some of the other officers about the case. I walked over and the group greeted me.
"So we managed to get some footage from the night of the murder, but it's been tampered with."
"And the toxicology report?"
"He has taken quite a few pain killers, but it seems he took them after he was attacked."
"He was still alive?"
Winston nodded, "appears so. He bled out. We have yet to find his phone."
"Well, i might've gotten something."
Winston raised a brow, "and what's that?"
"He was getting expelled from the school for being in a fight. It was self defense, but apparently the source of the fight was someone both people were infatuated with."
"Who did he fight?"
"A student named Leonardo Ceaser."
"Well," Winston hummed, "do you want to interrogate him or should we?"
"I'll leave it to you. I feel as though he won't talk to me. If he refuses to talk, call me back down. I'm going to go to the campus and grab someone who can help me with the tape."
He made a noise of agreement, "Alright, see you around Felix. Do you still have your badge?"
I smirk, pulling it out of my pocket, "I never leave home without it. See you soon."
"Be safe kid."
My lips tugged at a smile as I started walking away, "I'm not a ten year old kid anymore, I know to be safe."
I left the station as quickly as I came, forgetting about the reporters. They caught me this time as a flood of questioned poured in. I didn't care for them as I pushed through.
None of them knew me.
So i didn't want to hear their questions. I just wanted to solve this case for my mothers sake. My brothers sake. For my sake.
So I went in my merry way to campus. It was a Sunday, so I knew well that the only people on campus were the ones who used the school's resources.
Such as my partner in crime who isn't my best friend-
"Felix, what do you want now?" His voice groaned as I walked into the computer lab. His eyes lit up mischievously, fire behind the storm. He ran a hand through that golden honey hair of his, biting his lower lip as if he expected me to ride him into tomorrow.
Another time.
"Need your help figuring out how to fix this fucking thing," I held up a flash drive with the footage on it.
"What's the special occasion?" He asked, sliding his chair over to snatch the drive from my hand then slide back.
I walked over slowly, "my brother was murdered and that's the tape of it. There's missing footage."
He looked at me, and nodded, "Alright, I'll see what I can do."
"Thanks Andy, it's much appreciated."
"I'll do my best. Can you go buy my a coffee, but yourself one too, this will take awhile."
"Hey," I said warmly, "I'll play you back."
He chuckled, "one day you're going to fall in love and regret those words." He paused, "I'm doing this because I want to anyways. Benny was a good kid." He pulled out a ten to pay for the coffee. I took it as he quickly plugged in the drive and got to work.
When he stopped speaking to me and muttering under his breath, I knew he was gone and made my way outside the room and ran my ass over to the nearby coffee shop. It was just off of the campus, so it wasn't far.
It didn't even take me long to get our usual white girl drinks. When I got back, he was facing the door, head in hands sighing.
"Woah, you okay there Andy?" I asked.
He looked up, "I fixed the video."
"You did? Are we able to I.D the guy?"
"No. There's parts I can't recover, but-" he ushered me over and I went over, handing him his coffee as he played the video.
Benny was sitting at the desk, reading something on his phone. He glanced up as if he heard a noise-
"Where's the audio?" I asked.
Andy cast a weary glance at me, "it's gone, I couldn't recover it and it only picks up at the end."
Benny talked to a guy or gal who was offscreen, in a blind eye, smiling, talking about a lot of things when Benny got up, hiking his bag on his shoulder. There was a stutter in the film and Benny was suddenly backing nearly out of view, a stutter, then he was against where he was found the next morning, holding his wounds, coughing, sputtering up blood.
The audio cuts in, "I didn't get a chance to tell Felix-" a large cough, life draining quickly from his eyes, "it's not fair- why did-" his eyes closed and one last sentence spilled from his lips, "Felix, please, help."
I felt on the verge of tears. His dying words were a call for help. To me. If only I had been there to save him.
Maybe he'd still be-
"Felix," Andy grabbed my hands, looking at me with the loving look, and I smiled weakly at him. "It's not your fault. We'll find out who did this to Benny. So please, smile, Benny would've wanted it that way. I want it that way."
"Thank you Andy. I feel like I'm on the verge of a breakdown, but I have to solve this case."
Andy smiled and got up, pulling me into a warm hug. It was... great, better than Robin's. There was so much love, somewhat familial in the way he hugged me. I was safe there.
"I love you," he whispered. "Which is why, after all of this is over, we're not meeting up for sex anymore."
I laughed softly, "I kinda figured. You have someone on your mind?"
Andy pulled away, looking at me before rolling his eyes, "it's your obviously. Still, since I know we'd never work, better to cut that off sooner rather than later."
"How do you know it won't work out?"
"Well," He said, "you wouldn't be sleeping with other people."
I smile, "guess so." Before I could say anything else, my phone rang.
"You're needed elsewhere, I'll drink your coffee too as payment."
"Thank you again Andy."
"It was nothing. Just be safe."
