Chapter Fourteen
Andy left not too long after, just like he said, and the next week, Rico and I were alone to do couple shit.
And yet we still did stupid shit.
"I'm going to kick your ass," I joked, stretching.
Rico snorted, "if you think you can beat me, you have another thing coming."
The two of us were sparring in the park near the police station. My usual sparring partner was my... brother, but since he was gone, Rico had filled in the place. It wasn't odd to see the two of us sparring.
Since we were now a bit more affectionate, it led to a lot more endings for our matches.
We finished stretching and faced each other, then lunged at each other. Of course, neither of us would get hurt. We knew each other well enough to predict future moves.
The match that day ended with me kicking him in the chest, him grabbing my foot as he fell, causing me to fall on top of him.
When we fell, we laid there for a second before sitting up, laughing. "Taken down again."
"We're too equally matched," Rico hummed.
I simply smiled, leaning into him and pecking his lips. He responded by putting his hand on the small of my back, pulling me closer and leaving a long, soft kiss on my lips.
I was going to get addicted to the sharp shock that persisted between our connected lips.
It wouldn't have surprised me if I was already addicted. He was my nicotine. I knew he'd have to leave. I knew that after all this, I'd go through withdrawal. He made my life better and to go without him made me shiver.
He pulled away, brushing hair out of my face. "How was I able to live my life without you?"
"What's with the corny line?" I laughed softly. He smiled and laughed with me. We were like that for a few minutes, curled into each other, laughing dumbly before I got up, offering my hand to Rico, who took it as I yanked him to his feet.
"So, we should shower and do something, what do you think?" Rico asked, both of us still close, chest to chest basically.
"Sounds like a pl-" I was interrupted by my phone ringing. I frown and pull it out, seeing Winston. Fuck. "What's the problem lieutenant?"
Rico's interest piqued, but he remained silent.
"The Mayor's son has gone missing and Jennifer Kenny has disappeared from her jail cell."
"What?"
"At first we thought she kidnapped her own son, but we just found her. She's dead. Someone broke her out, killed her, and we're assuming kidnapped her son. We need you and Rico on the case."
"Of course! We'll be right there." As soon as my phone was put down, I turned to Rico, "save the showers for later, Mrs. Kenny is dead and her and the Mayor's Son has gone missing."
"Let's go!"
It was a blur, arriving to the station, but we rushed in and everything came back with a harsh lurch.
The mayor was there, face sickly and trembling limbs. Not too long ago he'd been a murder victim who barely survived, now he was a witness to something almost worst.
Kidnapping.
Poor guy.
Rico and I rushed over to the lieutenant, who was by the front desk. His eyes were hooded. I couldn't blame him though. The mayor's son was good friend of his. They went to college together.
I knew the Mayors kid in passing.
If you catch my drift.
Not that I told the lieutenant. Mostly because he was married and I didn't know until the lieutenant 'introduced' us.
"Has there been any updates since you called us Lieutenant?"
"None, we tried calling his wife to see if she knew anything, but she said she hadn't seen her husband in months."
"Months?" Rico wondered aloud, "who doesn't see their wife in months?"
I avoided eye contact when Rico looked at me. He didn't say anything.
"He wasn't faithful to her, perhaps they were in the process of a divorce or something?"
"What do you mean not faithful?" The lieutenant asked.
"Well, on that case we had with Robin, I left some names out because I knew they weren't the killers and it would've caused more harm then good. The mayors son? Nathan? Yeah, he was technically on the list."
"But he's married!"
"I didn't know at the time. Before you introduced us, I met him at a bar. I didn't know he was married until then."
"You have any idea who m-"
"I was with him once. He's not even a contact I had. I didn't know him that well, we agreed to not talk. I would talk to his wife more."
"Fine. That's what we-" he paused, "I introduced him to you when you were sixteen!"
"Not important right now."
"Not important my ass. why were you at a bar?"
"I wasn't drinking if you were wondering. I was working a case and had a lead there."
Winston sighed, "fine. You think he had a lover?"
"If he did, his wife probably knew them."
"Alright. She'll be here in half an hour at the most, you can ask questions when she gets here, for now, you two should hit the showers or something."
"We didn't bring a spare change of clothes," Rico informed.
"I'll have some officers lend you clothes."
We nodded and headed to the bathroom.
"Really?"
I sighed, "it's the past. I was young and dumb. Not like I liked him."
"He was a married man."
"Rico, I can promise you that I didn't know. I would have slept with him if I did."
He scratched the back of his neck, "you're right. Sorry. I really shouldn't be jealous over these sort of things."
Jealous? Aw. "Of course you shouldn't. I love you after all, not anyone else."
One shower later were dresser and ready to go question the wife, except she wasn't there yet. Though, there was a guy there. And he was quiet. He seemed familiar, for some reason.
"What's with the new guy?" I asked the lieutenant.
"He just showed up, refuses to say anything."
The man's head picked up and then I realized why I recognized him. "Ivan? What are you doing here? You live pretty far."
"You know him?" Rico asked curiously.
"Uh yeah, we knew each other in high school. Not that well, but well enough."
Ivan walked over to me, "Felix, I need your help! My boyfriend hasn't shown up at home in the past few days and at first I thought he was just staying at work and I went to check and he wasn't there. You have to help me, I think he was kidnapped!" His eyes were watering and tears slowly fell down his face.
Forever the softie.
I smiled at him kindly, "do you have a name? Can't find a guy without a name?"
"Y-Yeah, of c-course." I am sniffled pitifully and pulled out his phone, pulling up a picture. "Uh, this is him, Nathan Kenny."
Of course. "For fucks sake." If his wife was also someone I slept with, this entire case was going to be a nightmare of bullshit. "An unfaithful husband who found out he was gay. An estranged wife and a lover who probably didn't even know he was married. This case is annoying already."
"Wait, Nathan's married?"
I pushed that aside, "Ivan, how long were you and Nathan together?"
"Uh, three years? He moved into my place about five months ago."
"Great, can't wait to question the-"
"Do you have any leads on Nathan?"
We all turned to the new guest.
"For fucks sake!" I hiss. "Two unfaithful partners, a lover and to top it all off, the mayor's son. Great, great, I'm going to go scream in the bathroom." I walk past everyone and straight to the bathroom.
Thankfully, it was empty.
True to my word, I let out a frustrated scream of annoyance.
The whole case was more complicated when you dealt with affairs.
I gave myself a minute to calm down, pinching the bridge of my nose for a few seconds.
When I got back, the others were waiting.
"Care to explain your frustration Felix?"
I looked at the lieutenant, nodding. "So, at some point in time, it seems I've slept with all three of them. But Sarah here, when I was eighteen, meaning she also was cheating on her husband. So she could be a suspect. And Ivan, is also a suspect."
"You cheated on your husband?" Winston asked Sarah.
She sighed, shrugging, "he just... wasn't the same anymore. He didn't want to have sex, he was always away, never showed me affection. So yes. He actually filed for divorce a couple months ago and moved out, just like that. He said he realized he was gay and didn't want to lie to me."
"I never realized he was married. I've been with him for three years," Ivan informed.
"We didn't love each other and we definitely stopped caring about who we were with, so I've got nothing against you. Still, he was kidnapped, maybe? He doesn't deserve that."
"Either of you have any idea who could've targeted him?"
The two looked upwards, eyes moving slightly as they scoured their brains for any clues.
Then- "his mom."
"What?"
Ivan looked at Sarah, nodding, "he mentioned her briefly to me. His parents didn't approve of him being gay, and now I'm thinking it wasn't just because he was gay..." he sighed, "but he said his mother was worse. He thought he might've liked guys a lot when he was younger, but his mom would beat the shit out of him and lock him in his room. She was just, awful. He said that he wanted to I traduces me to his family though, because he loved me... fuck."
"His mother was always harsh with him. We went to her about the divorce and she smacked him pretty hard. If he turns out okay in all this, I'm getting that divorce as soon as he can for his own sake and my own. I uh, hope you two are happy," Sarah says softly to Ivan.
Ivan smiled awkwardly, "sorry about stealing your husband."
"It's fine. I think I'm a little gay too. Bisexual more likely, but while I'm angry, I'm at fault too."
"Do you have anyone else who might stoop to kidnapping him?" I asked.
They shook their heads.
"No one? That can't be true."
"His mom was the only one who would stoop that low. Unless the dad suddenly decided to kidnapp his own son."
"Well," I said with a breathy sigh, "his mother was found dead this morning."
Both of them seemed to freeze for a moment, then look at each other. "You think it was Nathan? He maybe just offed her and ran."
"It could be. I mean, you'd know, you're his lover."
"But Nathan's such a soft guy, he can't even kill a spider because he feels so bad."
"I know right! But do you think that means-"
"Yeah, maybe? But how could they do that?"
"I don't -"
"Care to explain to the cops trying to find where Nathan is?"
The two jolted and Ivan jumped to explain, "Nathan has this friend, they've been close for years. Not as close as him and the lieutenant I think, but pretty close. His friend is this... buff girl who listens to all his problems. She definitely knows about his mom and maybe, she decided to end his problems and then took Nathan out of fear."
"Can we... have a name???"
"Ryan Alyson."
