The Long Game

Reminder: any dialogue between Eva and the Doctor in italics is telepathic. Any spells are in bold, ones that are in bold and italics are non-verbal.

I wake up and go to sit up but there was a weight on my waist. I blush madly when I realize that the Doctor had his arms wrapped around me and he was sleeping. I also want to crawl into a hole when I remember last night. I practically had a meltdown and cried all over the Doctor. I sigh and watch the Doctor as he sleeps, and yes, I know how creepy that sounds, but in my defense he looks so peaceful when he sleeps. All of the pain and self-hate fades away. The Doctor gets a line between his brows as they furrow and his arms tighten around me... seems I'm not the only one who has nightmares.

"Doctor," I whisper, putting my hands on his face and he frowns, moving in his sleep a bit. "Doctor," I whisper again.

His eyes shoot open and he looks around the room frantically before he focuses on me: "Eva..." he sighs, pulling me close to him and burying his face in my hair.

"The war?" I guess and he nods, tightening his hold on me.

"There's so much screaming, every time I close my eyes," he whispers, breathing heavily.

"I'm so sorry, but I'm here for you, for anything," I whisper, kissing his head as I rub his back.

"You being here is enough," he mutters roughly and I continue to soothe him for a few minutes.

"Alright, up you get," I pat his back and he whines, making me giggle slightly. "You are such a child," I shake my head. "Come on, I need to shower," I complain, trying to pry his arms off me.

"You smell fine," he retorts, not letting go.

"You're an idiot," I roll my eyes.

The Doctor lifts his head from my hair to give me a cheeky grin: "you love it," he winks.

"Bozo," I giggle, flicking his nose and making him jerk back.

"Oi!" he exclaims indignantly, pinching my arm.

"I'm free!" I cheer, jumping out of bed and running to my bathroom. "Ta, sweetie," I smirk over my shoulder at the Doctor's pout.

I take a shower and get dressed in a pair of cut-off black shorts, a black t-shirt that had a gold lion with 'Gryffindor' in red lettering, red converse, and my gloves. I put my hair in a messy bun, slip my wand in it, and put some simple eye make-up on. I get to the console room and skip over to Rose and Adam who were on the jump-seat, the Doctor was under the console.

"Morning, doll," I smile and nudge Rose with my foot.

"Morning, babe," she smiles, nudging me back.

I turn to Adam and hold my hand out: "hi, I'm Evangeline Evans, we weren't actually introduced," I smile. "You can call me Eva" I add.

"Adam Mitchell, pleasure to meet you, really," he smiles, shaking my hand. "So, this is..." he trails off, gesturing the room.

"She's gorgeous, isn't she?" I smirk and the TARDIS hums in reply. "So, where are we going?" I call down to the Doctor.

"I asked Adam, said the future but he doesn't care how far," he hops out and brushes his hands off on his pants. "You can pick," he smirks, leaning on the console and folding his arms.

"Ooo, I'm gonna set it on random," I smile widely, rushing around the console and piloting the TARDIS.

When it stops, the Doctor, Rose, and I step out. Adam was still inside getting his bearings. Rose wanted to impress him and how could I say no when she gave me her puppy-eyes? Girl's got a gift, so I gave in. Besides, it should be quite entertaining.

I beam and hold my arms out: "so, it's 200,000, it's a spaceship... no wait a minute," I frown, listening to the engines. "Space station?" I ask, turning to the Doctor.

"Space station," he nods, leaning against the TARDIS with his arms folded.

"Wicked!" I smile at getting it right, making him and Rose snort. "So, um... uh..." I trail off, looking around. "Go and try that gate over there," I gesture over to it. "Go on, then, impress your man," I smirk, leaning beside the Doctor and crossing my ankles.

"Like you were just doing?" she smirks back, winking when I blush.

"We're just friends," I mutter, narrowing my eyes at her and not noticing the Doctor grimace from beside me. "And I don't need to impress anyone," I scoff. "It just comes naturally," I stick my tongue out.

"Right," she rolls her eyes, smiling. "200,000?" she makes sure.

"200,000," I nod.

"'Kay," she smiles widely, opening the door to the TARDIS. "Adam? Out you come," she calls.

"This is gonna awesome," I smirk up at the Doctor.

"Should be," he nods, smirking when Adam comes out of the TARDIS with his jaw to the floor.

"Oh, my God," Adam breathes out, looking around.

"Don't worry, you'll get used to it," Rose assures him.

"Where are we?" Adam asks eagerly.

"Good question, let's see," Rose says as she looks around, making 'deductions' from our surroundings. "So, um... judging by the architecture, I'd say we're around the year 200,000," she says and Adam just nods silently, still boggled by what he's seeing.

"Oh, my Merlin," I bite my lip hard, trying not to laugh.

"If you listen... engines," Rose cups her ear.

"Yeah?" Adam says, hanging on her every word.

"He's not hard to please, is he?" the Doctor raises an eyebrow, looking like he's having an equally hard time not laughing.

"I think it's cute," I mutter and he raises both eyebrows at me. "In a lost puppy sort of way, which is really a bit of a turn off if you ask me," I roll my eyes, making him snort loudly.

Adam looks over and Rose narrows her eyes: "ignore them, they're having a mind conversation," she turns him back to looking around the room.

The Doctor and I glance at each other before bursting into quiet snickers.

"We're on some sort of space station," Rose 'listens' to the engines. "Yeah. Definitely a space station," she nods, pleased with what she hears. "It's a bit warm in here, they could turn the heating down... tell you what, let's try that gate," she runs over to the gate I had pointed to. "Come on!" she calls over her shoulder to Adam.

As soon as they're out of sight the Doctor and I make eye contact and burst out laughing. I had to hold onto his arm to stop from falling over: "that was amazing!" I choke out. "Come on, Rose is gonna run out of 'facts' for her new boy toy," I smirk, grabbing the Doctor's hand and dragging him off with him chuckling behind me.

"Yes, dear," he snorts loudly.

"And this is..." Rose trails off. "...I'll let Eva and the Doctor describe it," she says quietly in awe.

"The fourth great and bountiful human empire and there she is; Planet Earth at her height," I smile widely, standing beside Rose and looking down at the planet.

"Covered with mega-cities, five moons- population 96 billion," the Doctor adds, coming over and throwing an arm over my shoulders. "The hub of a galactic domain, stretching across a million planets, a million species- with mankind right in the middle," he smiles.

I hear a girlish sigh and crane my neck to see that Adam had fainted. I do a sort of choking laugh, covering my mouth.

"He's your boyfriend," the Doctor reminds Rose with a smirk.

"Not anymore," Rose scoffs lightly.

"You don't fancy pretty boy anymore?" I tease, smirking at Rose.

"Shut up," she rolls her eyes, smiling, before going over and smacking Adam's face to wake him up.

After Adam woke the four of us head out to explore the rest of the station. We were in a huge, canteen looking area, there was a wall with TV screens and I notice a huge 139. The Doctor was in front of me with his arms slung around Rose and Adam's shoulders while I skipped behind them slowly.

"Come on, Adam, open your mind," the Doctor squeezes him, making me smile. "You're gonna like this, fantastic period of history," he smiles widely.

I skip up beside Rose and link my arm through hers: "the human race at its most intelligent- culture, art, politics!" I beam as I look around.

"This era has got fine food, good manners-"

"Out of the way!" a man cuts off the Doctor rudely as he barges past us.

Food stalls open up and loads of people rush about and push past each other as they queue up to get their food, yelling over one another.

Rose goes over and looks at the food: "fine cuisine?" she raises an eyebrow.

"My time senses must be going funny," I frown, looking around.

"No, they're find... weird," the Doctor frowns.

"That's what comes of showing off. Your history's not as good as you thought it was," Rose teases us.

"Oi, our history's perfect," I point to her indignantly.

"Well, obviously not..." she trails off, her tongue between her teeth.

I narrow my eyes at Rose playfully: "you cheeky little-"

"They're all human," Adam cuts in, looking around and Rose winks at me. "What about the millions of planets? The millions of species? Where are they?"

"You're right..." I frown, looking around as well. "Not an alien in sight," I scratch my head.

"Good question," the Doctor mutters distractedly, looking around as well. "Actually, that is a good question," he puts his arm back over Adam's shoulder. "Adam, me old mate, you must be starving," he smiles, making me snort.

"No, I'm just a bit time sick," Adam argues.

"Nah, you just need a bit of grub," the Doctor retorts. "Oi, mate, how much is a kronkburger?" he asks the vendor.

"Two credits twenty, sweetheart," the vendor answers. "Now, join the queue," he waves him off.

"Money, we need money," the Doctor mutters to himself as he goes over to a cash point. "Have to use a cash point," he sonics it.

I roll my eyes with a smile and pull Rose after him, Adam following. A credit strip pops out of the cash point and the Doctor hands it to Adam: "there you go- pocket money; don't spend it all on sweets," he smiles and grabs my hand. "Come on, Eva," he starts to pull me off.

"How does it work?" Adam asks and the Doctor and I sigh heavily, turning around.

"Go and find out!" the Doctor tells him. "Stop nagging me! The thing is, Adam, time travel's like visiting Paris. You can't just read the guide book, you've got to throw yourself in. Eat the food, use the wrong verbs, get charged double and end up kissing complete strangers...or is that just me?" he muses and Rose and I laugh as Adam just stares at him like he's gone mental.

"I think that's just you, sweetie," I shake my head with a smile. "Stop asking questions, go on, explore, live a little!" I usher Adam away and he walks off into the crowd and Rose turns to follow. "Enjoy your first date, doll," I call after her.

"You're going to get a smack, you are," she points at me 'threateningly'.

"Ooo, now I'm scared," I smirk, 'shivering' and making the Doctor laugh. "Go on, have fun, don't do anything I wouldn't do," I wink, making her laugh before she walks off.

As soon as she's out of sight the Doctor and I share a look: "...so, either both of us have suddenly gone daft or something's wrong here," I mutter, looking around.

"Something is very wrong, care to investigate?" he grins down at me.

"I thought you'd never ask," I gasp dramatically.

The Doctor snorts loudly and pulls me along. We walk up to two woman; one was black with long braids, different kinds of beads in them, and she was wearing a pants-suit; the other was white with light brown hair in a pixie cut and she was wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

"Um... this is gonna sound daft, but can you tell us where we are?" the Doctor asks them.

"Floor 139... could they write it any bigger?" braids asks, gesturing to the numbers I saw earlier.

"Yeah, caught that bit," I nod. "But Floor 139 of what?" I ask.

"Must've been a hell of a party," braids mutters.

"It was, very fun, very forgetful at the moment, though," I smile innocently, making the Doctor snort.

"Oh, you're on Satellite Five," pixie smiles.

"What's Satellite Five," the Doctor asks.

"Come on, how could you get on board without knowing where you are?" braids scoffs.

"Look at us, we're stupid," the Doctor smiles pleasantly.

"Well, he is, as we've established, I'm just hungover," I smile.

"Oi," the Doctor 'pouts', kneeing me in the butt and I stick my tongue out at him.

"Hang on, wait a minute, are you a test?" pixie asks, looking between us. "Some sort of management test kind of thing?"

"Sounds good to me," I look up at the Doctor.

He nods, taking out the psychic paper: "you've got us, well done, you're too clever for us," he 'praises' as he shows them.

"We were warned about this in basic training: all workers have to be versed in company promotion," pixie murmurs to her friend.

"Right," braids straightens and tugs on the end of her blazer. "Fire away, ask your questions. If it gets me to Floor 500 I'll do anything," she smiles.

"Why, what happens on Floor 500?" I raise an eyebrow.

"The walls are made of gold," braids says as though it's obvious. "And you should know... Mr. And Mrs. Management," she smiles. "So... this is what we do," she walks off and leads us to one of the walls of screens.

Pixie smiles nervously at us and I send a reassuring one back as I look at all the different screens.

"Latest news... sandstorms on the new Venus archipelago. Two hundred dead. Glasgow water riots into their third day... spacelane 37 closed by sunspot activity. And over on the Bad Wolf channel, the Face of Boe has just announced he's pregnant," braids explains.

The Doctor and I share a look at the name of the last channel and I raise an eyebrow at the Face of Boe being pregnant. How did that work exactly... he's just a giant face?

"I get it, you broadcast the news," the Doctor nods.

"We are the news," braids retorts. "We're the journalists; we write it, package it and sell it. 600 channels all coming out of Satellite Five, broadcasting everywhere. Nothing happens in the whole human empire without it going though us."

"I think we need a demonstration, what do you think, Doctor?" I raise an eyebrow.

"Yes, we do..." he looks between the girls, prompting an introduction.

"Cathica," braids shakes both of our hands.

"Suki," pixie smiles shyly, shaking both of our hands.

"I'm Eva and this is the Doctor, we've got some others from management with us, if that's alright?" I ask.

"Of course," Cathica smiles.

Loudspeaker: "All staff are reminded that the canteen area now has self cleaning tables. Thank you!"

I look around and tap the Doctor's shoulder when I see Rose and Adam at one of the tables: "oi! Mutt and Jeff! Over here!" he calls them over.

Rose beams and comes over quickly, Adam trudging along a bit slower. The Doctor introduces the two and Cathica and Suki lead the four of us to a newsroom. The walls were white and there was an octagonal platform with a chair in the middle. Other staff, and Suki, are siting cross legged around the room with little palm-pads in front of them. On the ceiling was a giant, circular light. The Doctor, Rose, Adam, and I walk over to some railing off to the side and lean against it.

"Now," Cathica stands by the chair and addresses the room. "Everybody behave. We have a management inspection," she tells the staff before turning to the Doctor and I. "How do you want it? By the book?"

"Oh, right from scratch, thanks," the Doctor smiles and when Cathica turns away him, Rose, and I share a smirk.

"Ok, so, ladies, gentlemen, multisex, undecided or robot, my name is Cathica Santini Kadainy," she introduces herself before turning back to the Doctor and I with a smile. "That's Cathica with a 'C', in case you want to write to Floor 500 praising me, and please... do... now, please feel free to ask any questions. The process of news gathering must be open, honest, and be non-biased. That's company policy," she smiles at the Doctor and I again.

"Actually... it's the law," Suki cuts in and smiles at the Doctor and I.

"Yes, thank you, Suki," Cathica snaps.

"She's awfully techy," I comment, making the Doctor snort.

"Ok, keep it calm... don't show off for the guests... here we go," Cathica lies down in the chair. "And... engage safety..."

All of the staff that are siting hold their hands over the palm-pads. As they let their hands hover each of the walls light up one after the other. Cathica clicks her fingers and I wrinkle my nose when a little portal in her forehead opens up, showing her brain.

"That's disgusting," I mutter to the Doctor and he just nods in agreement.

The staff place their hands down on the palm-pads and close their eyes: "and 3... 2... and spike," Cathica counts down and a stream of light beams down into her brain portal.

"Compressed information, streaming into her," I mutter to Adam and Rose.

"Reports from every city, every country, every planet, and they all get packaged inside her head," the Doctor tells them. "She becomes part of the software, her brain is the computer," he explains.

"If it all goes through her, she must be a genius," Rose says with wide eyes.

"Nah, she wouldn't remember any," he shakes his head. "There's too much, her head would blow up," he starts to walk around the staff, me and Rose walking in the other side. "The brain's the processor, as soon as it closes, she forgets," he explains.

"So, what about all these people round the edge?" Rose asks, kneeling beside one.

"Eva?" the Doctor prompts.

I smile and put my hands behind my back as I walk around the staff: "all of 'em have got tiny little chips in their brains, connecting them to her," I gesture to Cathica. "Together, they transmit 600 channels, every single fact in the empire beams out of this station," I explain.

"Now, that's what I call power," the Doctor smiles. "Atta girl," he taps under my chin when I walk by.

I smile and do a mock-curtsy while moving back over to the railing with the Doctor and Rose. I stand in front of the Doctor and lean back against his chest, his arm going around my waist.

"You alright?" Rose asks Adam, who hasn't said anything since we came in here.

"I can see her brain," he stares at Cathica.

"Do you want to get out?" Rose asks sympathetically.

"No... no," Adam shakes his head quickly. "This is technology, it's... it's amazing," he breathes out.

"This technology's wrong," I snort loudly.

"Trouble?" Rose smirks over at us.

"Oh, yeah," the Doctor smiles.

I frown when there's a shuddering noise and Suki twitches. She gasps and lifts her hands off of the palm-pad as though she got shocked by it. The other staff members take their hands off of their own palm-pads and the lights on the walls turn off. The stream of information shuts off and Cathica's portal closes while Suki rubs her hands, breathing heavily.

"Come off it, Suki, I wasn't even halfway, what was that for?" Cathica snaps, sitting up.

"Sorry, must've been a glitch..." Suki trails off, looking at her hands.

"Oh..." Cathica mutters, standing up.

All of a sudden the far wall lights up and a projection pops up.

Loudspeaker: "Promotion."

"This is it. Come on. God, make it me. Come on, say my name. Say my name, say my name..." Cathica prays hard, her eyes screwed shut.

The Doctor, Rose, Adam, and I all share a look, concerned for her sanity.

Loudspeaker: "Promotion for... Suki Macrae Cantrell. Please proceed to Floor 500."

Suki stands and stares at the projection, completely shocked: "I don't believe it... Floor 500..." she mutters.

"How the hell did you manage that? I'm above you!" Cathica glares at her, making me roll my eyes.

"Could she be anymore jealous?" I look up at the Doctor.

"I don't know, I just applied on the off-chance... and they've said yes!" Suki exclaims happily.

"That's so not fair, I've been applying to Floor 500 for three years!" Cathica yells.

"Apparently she can," the Doctor snorts, laying his chin on my head.

"What's Floor 500?" Rose asks curiously.

"The walls are made of gold," I roll my eyes.

After Suki had gathered her things, her, Cathica, the Doctor, Rose, Adam, and I were waiting by the lift. Rose was off to the side talking with Adam.

"Cathica, I'm gonna miss you! Floor 500..." Suki smiles and then turns to the Doctor. "Thank you!"

"I didn't do anything!" the Doctor shakes his head, smiling.

"Well, you're my lucky charm!" Suki beams.

"Alright! I'll hug anyone!" the Doctor laughs, pulling her into a hug as she giggles.

I roll my eyes with a smile, the Doctor is a total dork. When they pull away Suki beams at me: "and you, thanks!" she pulls me into a tight hug.

"Good luck," I smile, squeezing her tight.

"Oh, my God, I've got to go, I can't keep them waiting..." she pulls away and picks up her bag. "I'm sorry! Say goodbye to Steve for me," she steps into the lift when it opens.

Rose comes back over and loops her arm through mine and her, the Doctor, and I smile and wave at Suki: "bye!" she calls right before the lift doors close.

"Good riddance," Cathica grumbles, folding her arms and looking away.

"You're talking like you'll never see her again, she's only going upstairs," the Doctor says.

"We won't, once you go to Floor 500 you never come back," Cathica shrugs.

The Doctor and I share a confused look: "a promise of gold walls and you never come back down?" he frowns.

"We have got to find out what the hell's going on..." I mutter and he nods before him, Rose, and I follow Cathica through the canteen area. "Have you ever been up there?" I ask her.

"No, you need a key for the lift, and you only get a key with promotion," Cathica explains. "No one gets to 500 except for the chosen few," she grumbles as we follow her into the now empty newsroom. "Look, they only give us twenty minutes maintenance, can't you give it a rest?" she asks, annoyed with us.

"But you've never been to another floor? Not even one floor down?" the Doctor asks, siting in the chair.

Rose leans her arms on the back and I settle myself on the chair between the Doctor's legs.

"I went to floor 16 when I first arrived, that's medical, that's when I got my head done, and then I... I came straight here," Cathica explains. "Satellite Five, you work, eat and sleep on the same floor; that's it, that's all," she shrugs before narrowing her eyes at us. "You're not management, are you."

"At last! She's clever!" the Doctor cheers mockingly.

"Yeah, well, whatever it is, don't involve me, I don't know anything," Cathica shakes her head.

"Don't you even ask?" the Doctor asks while I start to mess with the controls on the arm of the chair.

"Well, why would I?" Cathica frowns.

"You're a journalist!" the Doctor points out. "Why's all the crew human?" he asks, slapping my hand away from the controls.

"What's that got to do with anything?" Cathica frowns more.

"There's no aliens on board," I roll my eyes and elbow the Doctor in the stomach, making him groan. "Why?" I raise an eyebrow, squeaking as the Doctor pinches my side.

"I don't know- no real reason, they're not banned or anything," Cathica shrugs.

The Doctor and I both stop hitting each other and yelp when Rose flicks us both in our ears: "knock it off," she rolls her eyes at us.

"Yes, mother," I fold my arms, making the Doctor snort. "Anyway, where are the aliens at if they aren't banned?" I ask.

"I suppose immigration's tightened up; it's had to, what, with all the threats," Cathica mutters.

"What threats?" I raise an eyebrow.

"I don't know... all of them... usual stuff, and the price of space warp doubled so that kept the visitors away... oh, and the government on Traffic Five's collapsed, so that lot stopped coming, you see... just... lots of little reasons, that's all," she stutters slightly, getting flustered.

"Adding up to one great big fact, and you didn't even notice," I roll my eyes.

"Eva, I think if there was any kind of conspiracy, Satellite Five would have seen it; we see everything," she waves off.

"We can see better," the Doctor retorts, gesturing between us. "This society's the wrong shape. Even the technology," he tells her.

"It's cutting edge!" Cathica exclaims, offended.

"It's backward!" I argue. "You've got a big door to your brain and you get used as a computer! You should've checked it out years ago!"

"So, what do you two think is going on?" Rose asks.

"It's not just this space station, it's the whole attitude; it's the way people think," I shake my head, feeling uncomfortable.

"The great and bountiful human empire's stunted... something's holding it back," the Doctor agrees, rubbing my shoulders.

"And how would you know?" Cathica scoffs.

"Trust us, humanity's been set back about 90 years," the Doctor tells her.

"Just out of curiosity, when did Satellite Five start broadcasting?" I ask lightly.

"91 years ago..." Cathica trails off thoughtfully.

The Doctor, Rose, Cathica, and I were at the doors to get into the mainframe and Cathica was anxious and being annoying.

"We're so gonna get in trouble," Cathica murmurs while the Doctor tries to sonic the door. "You're not allowed to touch the mainframe, you're gonna get told off," she comes over.

"Girls, tell her to button it," the Doctor mutters, still working on the door.

"Move," I sigh, slipping my wand from my hair and pointing it at the door: 'Alohomora' the lock clicks open and I slip my wand back into my hair.

"You can't just vandalize the place, someone's gonna notice!" Cathica whisper-shouts.

The Doctor pulls the door open: "thank you, love," he sends me a wink, making me roll my eyes with a smile as my cheeks turn pink.

I ignore Rose's smirk as her, the Doctor, and I work on the mainframe.

"This is nothing to do with me, I'm going back to work," Cathica starts to walk away.

"Go on, then! See ya!" I smile, wiggling my fingers at her.

"I can't just leave you, can I!" she stomps back and I sigh heavily.

"If you wanna be useful, get 'em to turn the heating down, it's boiling," Rose mutters, pulling on her jacket. "What's wrong with this place, can't they do something about it?"

"I don't know, we keep asking, something to do with the turbine," Cathica waves off.

"'Something to do with the turbine'," the Doctor mocks, making Rose and I snort.

"Well, I don't know!" Cathica exclaims.

"Exactly! Me and the Doctor give up on you, Cathica," I point at her. "Now, Rose, look at Rose, my beautiful and brilliant doll, she's asking the right questions," I gesture to her.

"Oh, thank you," Rose smiles, pleased and I send her a wink as I get back to work.

"Why is it so hot?" the Doctor repeats Rose's question.

"One minute you're worried about the Empire and the next it's the central heating!" Cathica scoffs.

"Well, never underestimate plumbing. Plumbing's very important," the Doctor says lightly as he snaps a bunch of wires.

"Bozo," I snicker, stepping into the mainframe and helping out. "Here we go, Satellite Five," I smile, getting the little screen and handing it to Cathica.

"Pipes and plumbing, look at the layout," the Doctor tells her.

"This is ridiculous, you've got access to the computer's core, ou can look at the archive, the news, the stock exchange... and you're looking at pipes?" Cathica mutters.

"But there's something wrong," the Doctor nods to the schematics.

"I suppose..." she trails off, looking them over.

"Why, what is it?" Rose asks.

"The ventilation system," Cathica gestures to the screen. "Cooling ducts, ice filters, all working flat out... channeling massive amounts of heat down," she explains.

"All the way from the top," I nod, pointing up.

"Floor 500," Rose realizes.

"Bingo," I point to her. "See, brilliant," I smile and she rolls her eyes, smiling.

"Something up there is generating tons and tons of heat," the Doctor tells her.

"Well, I don't know about you, but I feel like I'm missing out on a party," Rose smiles. "It's all going on upstairs, fancy a trip?" she loops her arm through mine.

"You can't, you need a key," Cathica puts in.

"Keys are just codes, and I've got the codes right here," the Doctor retorts, gesturing to the screen as he types. "Here we go, override 215.9," he smiles.

"How come it's giving you the code?" Cathica gapes at him.

The Doctor looks up at a security camera: "someone up there likes me," he narrows his eyes.

"Well, it was bound to happen one day, medicine man," I smile, making Rose laugh.

"Haha," he rolls his eyes.

The Doctor, Rose, and I head into the lift with Cathica just outside with her arms folded: "come on, come with us!" Rose tries.

"No way!" Cathica shakes her head.

"Bye!" the Doctor and I smile and wave.

"Well, don't mention my name! When you get in trouble, just don't involve me!" she glares before stalking off.

"She's so cheerful," I roll my eyes.

"That's her gone, Adam's given up," the Doctor comments and Rose and I look up at him. "Looks like it's just you girls and me," he smiles.

"Yeah," Rose nods.

"Good," he nods back.

"Yep," I smile widely, grabbing both of their hands, intertwining our fingers.

Rose and the Doctor smile back and the Doctor slips the card into the controls, making the doors close. The lift opens back up on Floor 500 and I blink in surprise. I wasn't expecting gold, but I wasn't expecting snow and ice either.

"The walls are not made of gold," the Doctor mutters, looking around. "You girls should go back downstairs," he tells Rose and I.

"Tough," Rose scoffs.

"It's like you don't even know us," I roll my eyes and Rose and I walk ahead of the Doctor, who follows.

The three of us enter a control room and a man in a black suit with extremely pale skin, pale blue eyes, white hair, and a white goatee was stood. There were also frozen staff members covered in ice at he controls.

"I started without you," the man smiles. "This is fascinating. Satellite Five contains every piece of information within the Fourth Great and Bountiful Human Empire; birth certificates, shopping habits, bank statements, but you three... you don't exist!" he laughs. "Not a trace! No birth, no job, not the slightest kiss. How can you walk through the world and not leave a single footprint?" he asks.

"Suki! Suki!" Rose rushes over to her lifeless body and kneels beside her. "Hello? Can you hear me? Suki?" she turns to the man with narrowed eyes. "What've you done to her?" she demands.

"I think she's dead," I whisper, my hearts clenching.

"She's working..." Rose denies thickly.

"They've all got chips in their head, and the chips keep going," I explain softly.

"Like puppets," the Doctor glares at the man.

"Ohhh! You two are full of information!" he smiles. "But it's only fair we get information back, because apparently, you're no one," he laughs. "It's so rare not to know something. Who are you?" he asks.

"It doesn't matter, cause we're off, nice to meet you," he glares. "Come on," he tells Rose as he grabs my hand to drag me off.

Two of the frozen staff grab the Doctor, another two grab me, and 'Suki' grabs Rose's arm. I freeze at the cold touch restraining me and my breathing becomes ragged.

"Tell me who you are!" the man demands harshly.

"Since that information's keeping us alive, I'm hardly gonna say, am I?" the Doctor scoffs. "Eva, deep breaths," he tells me softly and I just shake my head, barely aware of what he said. "Come on, love, in and out, in and out, do it for me?

I close my eyes and take several deep breaths while the Doctor talks me though it and I calm a bit, although I was still on edge.

"Well, perhaps my Editor in Chief can convince you otherwise," the man smiles at us.

"And who's that?" I ask tightly.

"It may interest you to know that this is not the Fourth Great and Bountiful Human Empire," he tells me and my eyebrows furrow in confusion. "In fact, it's not actually human at all. It's merely a place where humans happen to live," he says and an angry snarl comes from somewhere. "Yeah, sorry. It's a place where humans are allowed to live by kind permission of my client," he corrects and clicks his fingers, pointing up.

The Doctor, Rose, and I look up and my eyes widen. Attached to the ceiling was a huge, red, slimy lump with a mouth full of sharp teeth, snapping down at us.

"What is that?" Rose gapes up at it.

"You mean, that thing's in charge of Satellite Five?" the Doctor asks, looking at the alien with wide eyes.

"That 'thing', as you put it, is in charge of the human race," the man scoffs.

"He's what now?" I look back down at him.

"For almost a hundred years, mankind has been shaped and guided, his knowledge and ambition strictly controlled by its broadcast news," he explains. "Edited by my superior, your master, and humanities guiding light, the mighty Jagrafess of the Holy Hadrojassic Maxarodenfoe," he says and the Jagrafess roars. "I call him Max," he smiles.

"Not the name I would have come up with," I wrinkle my nose at the pet name. "Maybe... gross, slimy, swollen cunt, it's got a ring to it, eh?" I smile innocently, making the Doctor and Rose choke on laughter while the man scowls at me and the Jagrafess roars at me.

The man, who introduced himself as the Editor, had the frozen staff put the three of us in manacles. I was taking deep breaths while the Doctor gave encouragements in my mind, which I was incredibly grateful for.

"If we create a climate of fear... then it's easy to keep the borders closed," the Editor tells us with his smug grin. "It's just a matter of emphasis. The right word in the right broadcast repeated often enough can destabilize an economy... invent an enemy... change a vote..." he trails off.

"So, all the people on Earth are like, slaves," Rose sums up.

"Well, now, there's an interesting point," the Editor smiles at her. "Is a slave a slave if he doesn't know he's enslaved?" he wonders.

"Yes," I say immediately.

"Oh, I was hoping for a philosophical debate," the Editor pouts. "Is that all I'm going to get? Yes?"

"Yes," I repeat.

"You're no fun," he laughs.

"Let me out of these manacles, I'll show you exactly how much fun I can be," I glare at him, pulling on my restraints.

"I like a bit of fire," the Editor smirks and goes to stoke my cheek but I jerk back.

"Don't you touch her," the Doctor growls and pulls on his manacles.

"Oh, he's tough, isn't he? So protective," the Editor smiles. "But, come on. Isn't it a great system? You've got to admire it, just a little bit," he tries.

"You can't hide something on this scale, somebody must've noticed," Rose cuts in.

"From time to time, someone, yes," the Editor admits. "But the computer system allows me to see inside their brain... I can see the smallest doubt, and crush it," he grins, miming something being crushed. "And then they just carry on, living their life. Strutting about downstairs and all over the surface of the Earth like they're so individual," he scoffs.

I look over at a mirror and spot Cathica: "you see her?" I ask the Doctor.

"Yep," he replies.

"When of course, they're not," the Editor continues, oblivious. "They're just cattle... in that respect, the Jagrafess hasn't changed a thing," he rolls his eyes.

"What about you? You're not a Jagra... uh... a... belly... thing," Rose falters on the name.

"Jagrafess," the Doctor supplies.

"Jagrafess," Rose nods. "You're not a Jagrafess, you're human."

"Yeah, well simply being human doesn't pay very well," the Editor tells her.

"But you couldn't have done this all on your own," she persists.

"No! I represent a consortium of banks, money prefers a long-term investment," he explains. "Also, the Jagrafess needed a little hand to um... install himself," he says delicately.

"Hm... I don't doubt it, creature that size," I hum thoughtfully. "What's his life span?"

"3,000 years," the Editor answers and I whistle lowly.

"That's one hell of a metabolism generating all that heat," the Doctor murmurs. "That's why Satellite Five's so hot. You pump it out of the creature, channel it downstairs- Jagrafess stays cool, stays alive. Satellite Five's one great big life support system," he explains to Cathica indirectly.

"But that's why you're so dangerous; knowledge is power, but you remain unknown," the Editor gives a small laugh and clicks his fingers and I hiss in pain when electricity flows through the manacles. "Who are you?" he demands.

"Leave 'em alone," the Doctor grinds out through his pain. "I'm the Doctor, they're Evangeline Evans and Rose Tyler, we're nothing, we're just wandering," he tells him.

"Tell me who you are!" the Editor shouts.

"He just said, you pasty dickhead!" I grind out.

"Yeah, but who do you work for? Who sent you? Who knows about us? Who exactly-" the Editor stops. "Time Lords," he smiles between the Doctor and I and my eyes widen.

"What?" the Doctor stares at him.

"Oh, yes! The last of the Time Lords in his traveling machine," the Editor smiles. "Oh, with his little Time Witch half-ling and her human girl from long ago..." he coos and strokes Rose's face gently, making her jerk away.

"Keep your hands off her," I snarl, pulling on my restraints roughly. "You don't know what you're talking about," I glare.

"Time travel," he smirks at me.

"Someone's been telling you lies!" the Doctor exclaims.

"Young master Adam Mitchell?" the Editor raises an eyebrow and clicks his fingers.

My eyes widen when a holo-screen of Adam pops up and he's on a news chair. There was a stream of information flowing into a brain portal and he was shouting in pain as information was being pulled from him.

"Bloody hell..." I stare at the screen.

"Oh, my God, his head!" Rose gasps in horror.

"What the hell's he done? What the hell's he gone and done?" the Doctor exclaims. "They're reading his mind, he's telling them everything!"

"And through him, I know everything about you," the Editor smirks. "Every piece of information in his head is now mine. And you have infinite knowledge, Doctor, Dark Lady. The Human Empire is tiny compared to what you've seen in your T-A-R-D-I-S," he pauses. "TARDIS," he smirks widely at us.

"You'll never get your hands on it, I'll die first," the Doctor glares.

"We both will," I promise.

"Die all you like, I don't need you," the Editor waves off. "I've got the key," he smiles.

I watch in absolute horror as the TARDIS key floats out of Adam's pocket and dangles by his face.

"You and your bloody boyfriends!" I glare at Rose.

"Today, we are the headlines," the Editor smiles. "We can rewrite history. We could prevent mankind from ever developing."

"And no one's gonna stop you, because you've bred a human race that doesn't bother to ask questions," I grind out.

"Stupid little slaves, believing every lie," the Doctor glares. "They'll just trot right into the slaughter house if they're told it's made of gold."

I glance over at the mirror and see Cathica rush out. Please Cathica... please. I smile when an alarm goes off.

"What's happening?" the Editor demands. "Someone's disengaged the safety," he clicks his fingers and another holo-screen shows Cathica in a newsroom with a stream of information going into her brain. "Who's that!?"

"It's Cathica!" Rose cheers.

"And she's thinking, she's using what she knows!" the Doctor smiles widely.

"Terminate her access," the Editor orders the frozen staff.

"Everything me and the Doctor told her about Satellite Five, the pipes, the filters, she's reversing it! Look..." I nod up to the icicles that were starting to melt. "Getting a bit hot in here, don't ya think?" I smirk.

"I said, terminate!" the Editor frantically places his hands over 'Suki's'. "Burn her mind," he orders.

"Oh, no you don't, you should've promoted me years back," Cathica glares.

All of the screens in the control room start to explode and the frozen staff fall to the floor. The whole of Satellite Five shudders and alarms were going off.

"She's venting the heat up here," the Doctor smiles. "The Jagrafess needs to stay cool and now it's sitting on top of a volcano!" he laughs as the Jagrafess roars.

"Yes! Uh... I'm trying, sir but, I don't know how she did it, it's impossible," the Editor stutters. "A member of staff with an idea..." he chuckles nervously.

Rose's manacles snap open and she rushes over to the Doctor and pulls the sonic from his pocket: "what do I do?" she asks frantically.

"Flick the switch!" the Doctor and I tell her.

Rose hurriedly used the sonic on the Doctor and then me and the three of us grab hands: "oi, mate, wanna bank on a certainty? Massive heat in a massive body," the Doctor smiles. "Massive bang!" he laughs.

"See ya in the headlines!" I call over my shoulder as the Doctor, Rose, and I rush out and into the newsroom.

I rush over to Cathica and click my fingers, closing her brain portal: "we've gotta run," I grab her hand and pull her out of the chair and the four of us head to the lift.

The Doctor and Cathica were siting on a table in the canteen on Floor 139. Rose and I were leaning against a bar behind them, our arms around each other's waists.

"We're just gonna go," the Doctor tells her. "I hate tidying up. Too many questions. You'll manage," he smiles.

"You'll have to stay and explain it, no one's gonna believe me," she protests.

"Oh, they might start believing a lot of things now," the Doctor assures her.

"Human Race should accelerate; all back to normal," I smile.

"What about your friend?" Cathica nods to Adam, who was by the TARDIS.

"He's not any sort of our friend," I glare and walk over to Adam, the Doctor and Rose behind me.

"Now, don't-" Rose tries but I give her a look and she backs down.

"I'm alright now, much better," Adam smiles. "I've got the key," he shows me. "Well, it's... I know... it all worked out for the best, didn't it?" he laughs nervously.

I snatch the key from him and grab Adam by the arm with my free hand, unlocking the TARDIS.

"You know, it's not actually my fault, because you and him were-" he yelps in pain as I tighten my hold on him and shove him inside the TARDIS.

I sit him in the jump-seat and look over at the Doctor: "you want to pilot?" I raise an eyebrow.

"It'd be my pleasure," he nods, sending Adam a harsh glare before setting the TARDIS off.

Rose was watching nervously by the console as the place shook. As soon as we land I grab Adam's arm again and push him out of the TARDIS. His eyes widen when he sees we were at his house as Rose and the Doctor come out. The Doctor leans against the door with his arms folded.

"It's my house! I'm home! Oh, my God, I'm home!" he exclaims happily. "Blimey. I thought you were going to chuck me out of an airlock," he beams before it falls off his face when he sees my glare.

"Is there something else you want to share with the Doctor and me?" I ask, raising an eyebrow.

"No, um... what do you mean?" he plays dumb.

I slip my wand from my hair and walk over to the phone: "the archive of Satellite Five," I glare. "One second of that message could've changed the world," I grind out.

I point my wand at the phone: 'Confringo' it blows up.

"That's it, then, see ya," the Doctor says coldly.

"How do you mean, 'see ya'?" Adam gapes at him.

"As in 'goodbye'," I roll my eyes, walking over to the TARDIS.

"But... what about me? You can't just go, I've got my head, I've got a chip type two, my head opens," Adam argues.

"What, like this?" I glare, clicking my fingers and opening his brain portal.

"Don't," he glares at me and closes it.

"I've no idea what you mean, sweetie, don't do what?" I ask innocently, clicking my fingers again.

"Stop it!" Adam growls, closing it again.

I go to click my fingers again but Rose puts her hand on mine: "alright now, Eva, that's enough, stop it," she scolds me and I huff, backing down.

"Thank you," Adam nods at Rose and I snort when she clicks her fingers. "Oi!" he exclaims.

"Sorry, I couldn't resist," Rose snickers as he closes his portal again.

"The whole of history could've changed because of you," the Doctor glares.

"I just wanted to help," Adam tries.

"You were helping yourself," the Doctor scoffs.

"And, I'm sorry. I've said I'm sorry, and I am, I really am, but you can't just leave me like this," he begs.

"The hell we can't," I glare, folding my arms. "Cause if you show anyone your head, they'll open you up and experiment on you," I glare at him. "You'll have to live a normal, quiet life. Be unseen and avenger, good luck," I smile coldly.

"But I wanna come with you!" Adam exclaims.

"I only take the best, I've got Eva and Rose," the Doctor glares, opening the TARDIS door.

Adam scoffs and folds his arms: "what, a bottle blonde ditz and a psychotic bit-" his sentence gets cut off by the Doctor grabbing the front of his shirt and pushing him against the wall.

"Finish that sentence, go on, do it," he snarls. "What were you going to say? I'm dying to know," he glares and pushes him harder into the wall.

"I-I-I-" Adam stutters with wide eyes. "N-nothing," he shakes his head.

"You've no right to insult Rose," I glare at Adam. "You don't get to be a selfish prat, try to send yourself details of the future for your own personal gain, and then insult my friend and expect to get to come back in the TARDIS," I walk up and take Rose's phone from his pocket. "Doctor, come on," I put my hand on his arm.

The Doctor drops Adam and he slumps to the ground. The Doctor throws an arm around my shoulders and pulls me over to the TARDIS. Rose follows a minute later with Adam pleading with her to be let back in.
