The Age of Steel pt. 1
The Cybermen were closing in on us and I grip the Doctor's hand: "anytime now, sweetie," I mutter, watching the Cybermen warily.
The Doctor lifts the TARDIS power cell up and it emits a strong wave of vortex energy. The wave hits one of the Cybermen and bounces off it to the rest, causing all of them to disintegrate.
"What the hell was that?" Ricky gapes at the cell in the Doctor's hand.
"Who the fuck cares? Run!" George yells, pulling Rose after him.
All of us run, only to stop when the Preachers' van pulls to a stop in front of us: "everybody in!" Mrs. Moore shouts.
Pete tries to run back and the Doctor stops him, I go over to Rose, who was staring at the house.
"Doll, she's not your mum," I tell her gently, grabbing her hand.
"I know," she bites her lip, tears in her eyes.
"Come on," I lean up to kiss her temple and pull her into the van.
George, then Rose, then Pete, then, unfortunately, Tom sit on one side; the Doctor, then me, then Mickey on the other; and Ricky and Jake were up front with Mrs. Moore. I draw my knees up and wrap my arms around my legs, the Doctor's arm tightly around my waist as he rubs circles into my side with his thumb.
"Finished chatting!? Never seen a slower getaway in my life!" Mrs. Moore scoffs, driving away from the Tyler Mansion quickly.
"Any chance I could talk you into going to the TARDIS for this one?" the Doctor asks, looking at the power cell in his free hand.
"What, and miss all the excitement? Nah," I smile and he taps me on the nose with the cell, making me giggle quietly.
"What was that thing?" Ricky asks, glaring at the cell.
"Little bit of technology from our home," the Doctor mutters, nodding to me.
"It's stopped glowing, has it run out?" Mickey asks worriedly.
"It's on a revitalizing loop. It'll charge back up in about four hours," the Doctor explains, slipping it into his pocket.
"Right, so, we don't have a weapon anymore," Ricky huffs.
"Yeah, we've got weapons," Jake cuts in. "Might not be one of those metal things, but they're good enough for men like him," he gives Pete a pointed look.
"Leave him alone! What's he done wrong?" Rose glares at Jake.
"Oh, you know, just laid a trap that's wiped out the Government and left Lumic in charge," Jake rolls his eyes.
"If I was part of all that, do you think I'd leave my wife inside?" Pete demands.
"Maybe your plan went wrong," Ricky shrugs. "Still gives us the right to execute you, though," he glares.
"Oi, oi, oi, we are not discussing executions, here," I glare at him.
"Talk about executions, you'll make us your enemy," the Doctor narrows his eyes. "And take some really good advice, you don't wanna do that," he warns in a low tone that sends shivers down my spine.
"Your Oncoming Storm voice is rather sexy... anything else you use that for or is just reserved for enemies?" I smirk up at him.
The Doctor falters in his glare toward Ricky, sending me a look. I bite lip teasingly, wiggling my eyebrows, and he groans miserably. I snicker quietly and the Doctor pinches my side, making me jab my finger into his ribs.
"All the same... we have evidence that says Pete Tyler's been working for Lumic since 20.5," Ricky retorts.
"Is that true?" Rose stares at her parallel father in shock and Pete shifts uncomfortably.
"Get them up to speed, Mrs. Moore," Tom orders and I snuggle into the Doctor further, tapping on my leg as Bad Wolf snarls.
"We've got a government mole who feeds us information," Mrs. Moore calls from the driver's seat. "Lumic's private files, his South American operations... the lot; secret broadcasts twice a week," she informs us.
"Broadcast from Gemini?" Pete perks up and I raise an eyebrow at him.
"And how do you know that?" Ricky scoffs.
"Cause he's Gemini," I tell him and Pete frowns at me. "Isn't that right?"
"That's me," he nods.
"Yeah, well you would say that," Ricky rolls his eyes.
"Just wicked... now instead of just Mickey the Idiot, we've got Ricky the Idiot as well," I huff.
"Oi, I thought we had a truce," Mickey glares at me and I just shrug, the Doctor shaking with silent laughter beside me.
"Encrypted wavelength six-five-seven using binary nine," Pete gets us back on track. "That's the only reason I was working for Lumic: to get information! I thought I was broadcasting to the Security Services! I suppose the Minister of Magic ain't half bad, but what about Scooby Doo and his gang; they've even got the van!"
"No, no, no! But the Preachers know what they're doing," Mickey defends them. "Ricky said he's London's Most Wanted!"
"Yeah, that's not exactly..." Ricky trails off.
"Not exactly what?" Mickey frowns and Ricky rubs the back of his neck.
"Come on, mate, we're all dying to know," George smirks widely, wrapping an arm around Rose's shoulders.
"I'm London's Most Wanted for... parking tickets," Ricky murmurs, ducking his head in embarrassment.
"Great," Pete rolls his eyes.
"They were deliberate! I was fighting the system! Park anywhere, that's me," Ricky defends, making me snort loudly.
"Oh, we do the same," I smile, nudging the Doctor with my shoulder.
"Good policy," the Doctor grins. "I'm the Doctor, by the way, if anyone's interested," he introduces.
"And I'm Rose, and this George," she introduces. "Hello!" she smiles.
"Even better, that's the name of my dog," Pete groans and I raise my eyebrow when the Doctor and George laugh quietly, Rose slapping George's arm. "Still, at least I've got the catering staff on my side," he sighs.
"I knew you weren't a traitor," Rose murmurs to Pete.
"Why's that, then?" he asks.
Rose glances at me and I shake my head slightly: "I just did," she bites her lip.
"They took my wife," Pete puts his head in his hands.
"She might still be alive," Rose tries to stay positive, making me smile slightly.
"That's even worse," Pete shakes his head. "Cause that's what Lumic does; he takes the living... and he turns them into those machines..."
"Cybermen," the Doctor puts in and everyone looks at him, well... Tom eyes me, but I ignore him. "They're called Cybermen, and I'd take those ear-pods off if I were you," he tells Pete, who does just that and hands them to the Doctor. "You never know... Lumic could be listening," he disables them with the sonic.
"Yeah, but he's overreached himself, this Lumic bloke is still just a businessman," I put in.
"All we need to do is get to the City and inform the authorities," the Doctor nods. "Because I promise you, this ends tonight," he says firmly in a low tone.
I nudge him, making him look down at me and I smirk, sending him a wink.
"Stop it," he gives me a look and I snicker quietly. "I'd appreciate it if you'd stop staring at my girlfriend," he glares at Tom, who hadn't stopped eyeing me.
"Sorry... sorry, it's just-" he shakes his head, seeming to try and clear it. "Are you positive the two of us have never met, Evangeline?"
"Completely," I nod, tapping on my leg and wincing slightly.
"I'm sure I know you from somewhere," he frowns, his chin in his hand as he studies me carefully.
"She said you don't know her, drop it," George cuts in, glaring at Tom and making him frown more.
"Do you know of an Evangeline Lupin?" Tom asks, ignoring George. "She's about your age and you remind of her..." he trails off and my eyes widen.
"Lupin?" I sit up straighter, momentarily forgetting who I was talking to. "As in Remus Lupin?" I ask eagerly, my hearts racing at the prospect of my godfather being alive in this universe.
"Mm," Tom nods, the Doctor watching me warily. "Professor Lupin and Violet Evans... well, Lupin now, their daughter works with me closely in the Ministry," he explains.
"Remus Lupin married Violet Evans?" I ask with wide eyes, my mouth agape. "What is he the Professor of, the Defense Against the Dark Arts?"
"He is and I believe his wife is the current owner of Zonko's Joke Shop in Hogsmeade, along with Fred and George Weasley," Tom nods, making George and I smile widely. "I was hesitant at first, bringing Ms. Lupin into such an important job at her young age, but she's proven to be beyond what anyone expected of her... she's a very impressive woman," he smirks.
The look that crosses his features brings me back to the reality that I was talking to the parallel version of VOLDEMORT and my stomach churns. The look was one of fondness and pride, but there was something... possessive and lustfull behind it.
"You and she aren't..." I trail off, swallowing down bile and cringing at the feeling.
"Merlin, no," Tom snaps out of it, shaking his head furiously. "No, I would never," he denies firmly.
My hearts beat rapidly. I had to do something when we've finished with the Cybermen, I couldn't just let this Tom Riddle out there with a somewhat version of myself so close to him. If the look he had when thinking of her is anything to go by, his feelings toward her were anything but benign. The much more rational part of my mind reasoned that I could've just seen what I would've seen in my universes Voldemort when he was speaking of or thinking about me, but I wasn't in the right mindset to listen to that.
"Ooo, maybe we could send the killing curse his way," Bad Wolf suggests happily, the tapping getting worse as she laughs. "It'd be a complete accident, of course... can't help it if he gets caught in the cross-fire of a spell meant for a Cyberman, can we?" I can feel her smirk in my mind and I ignore the strong temptation to do what she wants, making her laugh harder.
"Eva," the Doctor rubs my side, making me look up at him and his eyes widen. "Your eyes..." he trails off, frowning.
I bite my lip, knowing my eyes had flashed gold for a second: "what?" I pretend I've no idea what he's talking about.
"They just... nothing..." he shakes his head, his eyebrows furrowed and I knew there were a thousand things flying through his mind right now on what he could've just seen. "You alright?" he asks worriedly.
"Just peachy," I try for a smile, but it comes out as a grimace.
The Doctor sighs, kissing the top of my head and pulling me closer to him as he hums a Gallifreyan lullaby through our mental link, calming me.
After a while, Mrs. Moore stops the van and we all get out. Down the road, there were people being marched through the streets in single-file lines.
"What the hell...?" Jake stares at them all.
"What's going on?" George asks, looking at all the people in concern.
"It's the ear-pods," I frown at them all blinking blue, keeping my hand in the Doctor's and keeping away from Tom. "Lumic must've taken control..."
"Can't we just... I don't know, take them off?" Rose asks, reaching up to a man beside her.
"Don't! Cause a brainstorm," the Doctor grabs her wrist in his free hand, pulling her away gently. "Human Race, for such an intelligent lot, you aren't half susceptible," he muses, looking around and making me roll my eyes. "Give anyone a chance to take control and you submit. Sometimes I think you like it. Easy life."
"Medicine man, you do realize that I share half of my DNA with the species you just casually insulted, right?" I raise an eyebrow.
"Sorry, love," he gives me a sheepish look and I roll my eyes.
"Hey, come and see," Jake calls us over to where he and Ricky are crouched and peering around the corner.
The rest of us hurry over, looking around the corner, and I curse under my breath. There was a row of Cybermen marching alongside the people, all of them heading in the same direction.
"Where are they all going?" George asks.
"I don't know," the Doctor shakes his head.
"Lumic must have a base of operation... didn't you say the trucks the Cybermen came out of had come from Battersea?" I turn to Mrs. Moore.
"That's where he was building his prototypes," Pete cuts in.
"Why's he doing it?" Rose asks.
"He's dying," Pete sighs. "This all started out as a way of life by keeping the brain alive. At any cost," he explains.
"Well, that's a stupid fucking plan," I scoff, making everyone look at me. "If he's going for being himself but in a metal body that won't die for all eternity, then he's gone about it all wrong," I shake my head.
"The thing is, though, I've seen Cybermen before, haven't I? That head, those handle shapes in Van Statten's museum," Rose cuts in.
"That stupid cunt," I wrinkle my nose, remembering the American git. "If I hadn't been asleep for that little adventure, I'd have loved taking one of those horns off that dragon skull he had in his office and shoving it up his pompous, rich arse; the poor man would've never been the same," I sigh in 'sympathy'.
"Anyway," the Doctor gives me a look, ignoring George and Rose snickering. "There are Cybermen in our universe. They started on an ordinary world just like this, then swarmed across the galaxy. This lot are a parallel version, and they're starting from scratch right here on earth," he explains.
"What the hell are you on about?" Pete stares between the three of us.
"Never mind that," Ricky cuts in. "Come on, we need to get out of the City," he tells us.
"We need to split up," Tom decides. "Mrs. Moore and I will watch after this lot," he gestures to the Doctor, Rose, George, Mickey, Pete, and I. "Ricky and Jake, you'll be distracting them, go right," he points to Jake. "You'll be going left," he points to Ricky. "We'll meet back at Bridge Street, move," he orders.
The two of them nod, heading off in the direction they were told and Mickey turns to Rose: "I'm going with him," he nods in the direction Ricky had went.
I watch as he leans in to kiss her and Rose turns her head so it landed on her cheek instead. I raise an eyebrow as she shuffles awkwardly and George smirks smugly when Mickey sighs, running off.
"Ok, I definitely missed something," I shake my head.
"Not the time," Rose mutters, biting her lip.
"Come on, let's go," Mrs. Moore cuts in and all of us run down the road, the Cybermen not far behind.
"There!" George points to an alley.
The seven us hurry to hide behind some dustbins. I grip the Doctor's hand tightly as he keeps himself between Tom and I at all times. A couple of Cybermen stop right on the other side of the bins, looking around. The Doctor raises the sonic in his free hand and points it at the Cybermen. After a moment they turn and leave. I breathe out a sigh of relief as we all stand and watch as they march off.
"Go," the Doctor whispers and the seven of us slowly move from behind the bins and run off.
We get to Bridge Street to wait for Ricky, Mickey, and Jake to come back and a few minutes later, Jake comes running up.
"I ran past the river," he stops in front of his, his hands on his knees as he catches his breath. "You should've seen it, the whole City's on the watch; hundreds of Cybermen all down the Thames!"
Ricky... or Mickey runs down the street to us, alone. Jake turns to him with a huge grin while Rose grips George's hand, staring at the man.
"Here he is!" Jake beams, faltering when the man doesn't reply and my hearts go out to Jake when I realize he was Mickey. "Which one are you?" he narrows his eyes.
"I'm sorry," Mickey shakes his head. "The Cybermen.. he couldn't-"
"Are you Ricky?" Jake asks, not getting an answer. "Are you Ricky?" he shouts.
"Mickey, that's you, isn't it?" Rose asks, her voice thick.
"Yeah," he nods and Rose runs over, hugging him tightly. "He tried, he was running," he tries to explain as he pulls away from Rose. "There was too many of them," he takes a few steps toward Jake.
"Shut it," Jake glares at the ground, his face screwing up in pain as everyone watches him in silence.
"There was nothing I could do," Mickey's voice cracks.
"I said just shut it," Jake whirls around, unshed tears in his eyes. "Don't even talk about him, you're nothing, you are," he glares. "Nothing!"
"We can mourn him when London is safe, but now, we move on," the Doctor cuts in gently, placing his free hand on Jake's shoulder.
Jake nods miserably and walks ahead of us. Our little group heads over to Battersea and we stand on the Thames Embankment across from it.
"The whole of London's been sealed off, and the entire population's been taken inside that place," Tom nods to the building, his arms folded.
"To be 'converted'," the Doctor nods.
"We've gotta get in there and shut it down," Rose says firmly, making me smile.
"How do we do that?" George raises his eyebrows.
"Oh, Eva and me? We'll think of something," the Doctor shrugs.
"You're just making this up as you go along!" Mickey accuses us, his hands on his hips.
"Got it in one, Mickey the Idiot," I smile widely, making him roll his eyes.
"But we do it brilliantly," the Doctor grins.
"I've hacked in," Mrs. Moore calls us over to a picnic table she was at with her laptop out.
We all crowd around her, except for Jake, who was off to the side, mourning his friend.
"Excellent work, Mrs. Moore," Tom smiles, sitting beside her to get a look.
"That's a schematic of the old factory," she points to her screen. "Look, cooling tunnels... underneath the plant... big enough to walk through."
"We go under there and up into the control center?" the Doctor asks and Mrs. Moore hums in affirmation.
"There's another way in," Pete cuts in, making everyone look at him. "Through the front door. If they've taken Jackie for upgrading, that's how she'll get in-"
"We can't just go strolling up," Jake scoffs, coming over.
"Or, we could... with these..." Mrs. Moore takes a pair of ear-pods from her bag, the Doctor taking one. "Fake ear-pods. Dead. No signal. But put them on, the Cybermen would mistake you for one of the crowd," she explains.
"Then that's my job," Pete nods.
"You'd have to show no emotion. None at all. Any sign of emotion would give you away," the Doctor warns.
"How many of those have you got?" Rose asks and I sigh, knowing I wouldn't be able to talk her out of it.
"Just two sets," Mrs. Moore shrugs.
"Ok, if that's the best way of finding Jackie... I'm coming with you," Rose decides, standing next to Pete.
"Why does she matter to you?" Pete asks, frowning.
"We haven't got time," she waves him off. "Eva, Doctor, I'm going with him, and that's that," she says firmly.
"No stopping you, is there?" the Doctor asks with a small grin.
"Nope," she shakes her head and the Doctor chucks the ear-pods to her.
"Wait... haven't we got Pete's ear-pods?" George cuts in.
"Oh, yes, we do," the Doctor realizes, pulling them from his pocket and chucking them to George.
"Alright, I'm going with Rosie and Pete, then," he decides.
"And why are you coming?" Pete asks in exasperation.
"For her," George shrugs, gesturing to Rose.
"Aw," I coo dramatically, making Rose blush and George roll his eyes.
"Tell you what... we can take the ear-pods at the same time," the Doctor cuts in, shaking his head with a smile. "Give people their minds back. So they don't walk into that place like sheep. Jakey-boy?" he leads Jake further up the hill and talks to him for a moment before coming back over. "Mrs. Moore... would you care to accompany Eva and me into the cooling tunnels?"
"How could I refuse an offer of cooling tunnels?" she smirks, making me smile.
"I'll be joining you three as well," Tom cuts in, making my smile fade instantly.
"We don't need you," the Doctor scowls, stepping in front of me.
"You are the leader of your group of friends, so where you go is the most important job," Tom narrows his eyes. "I am the leader of the Preachers and the Minister of Magic, so I will be joining you," he says firmly.
The Doctor stares him down and I place my hand on his back, making him look back at me: "it's alright... he can come if he wants," I tell him.
"You sure?" he frowns.
"Not like he can do anything with my big bad boyfriend around to protect me," I smirk.
"Fine, you can come with us," the Doctor narrows his eyes at Tom. "We attack on three sides, above, between, below; we get to the control center, we stop the conversion machines," he tells everyone.
"What about me?" Mickey cuts in and everyone turns to him.
"Mickey! You can... ahm..." the Doctor fumbles over his words.
"What, stay out of trouble? Be the tin dog?" Mickey scoffs. "No, those days are over, I'm going with Jake," he decides.
"I don't need you, idiot," Jake glares.
"I'm not an idiot! You got that!?" Mickey shouts angrily, making me feel a tiny bit bad, before he calms down. "I'm offering to help," he says sincerely.
"Whatever," Jake rolls his eyes, stalking off.
"Mickey?" I call when he turns to follow and he looks back at me. "Good luck," I smile, making his eyes widen a bit.
"Yeah..." he nods slowly. "You too," he gives a small smile back. "Rose, I'll see you later," he looks at her.
"Yeah, you better," she smiles.
"If we survive this, I'll see you back at the TARDIS," the Doctor smiles.
"That's a promise," Mickey grins, walking off.
I watch him go for a second before pulling Rose into a fierce hug: "be careful, doll," I stroke her hair, cooing to her teasingly.
"Of course I will, babe," she laughs, squeezing me. "You too... with him, I mean," she whispers.
"I will be," I nod, pulling back and cupping her face in my hands. "If we die, it'll be your sexy face I'll miss the most," I sigh sadly, kissing her forehead as she giggles.
"Not the Doctor's?" she raises an eyebrow, smirking.
"As if he comes anywhere near you! No, my love, it's you who truly holds my hearts," I say seriously before we both burst out laughing.
"Yes, yes, yes, the two of you love each other more than anything or anyone and not even the hottest fire in the universe could compare to the burning passion that flows between you," the Doctor rolls his eyes. "Can we go, now?"
"Yep," I smile widely, sending Rose a wink. "Georgie, take of yourself and my doll, I expect you both to make it out of there alive," I point to him sternly.
"It shall be done, m'lady," he grins, pulling me into a tight hug.
"Good luck," the Doctor pulls Rose into a tight hug. "I need my little sister, who else is gonna drive me mad?" he teases.
"Oi," she laughs, slapping his arm before hugging him back just as tight.
The two of them pull away and Rose, George, and Pete head off. The Doctor, Mrs. Moore, Tom, and I head to the entrance of the cooling tunnels. The Doctor goes first, then me, then Mrs. Moore, and finally Tom. The Doctor pulls me in front of him and grabs my hand, intertwining our fingers.
"It's freezing here," Mrs. Moore shivers.
"Any sign of a light switch?" the Doctor asks, looking into the dark tunnels and Tom and I get out wands out and light them up.
"Well, for those of us who haven't got magic, I've got these," Mrs. Moore rummages through her bag and pulls out a headlight that she hands the Doctor. "A device for every occasion; we Muggles aren't completely useless, Tom," she smiles and he rolls his eyes.
"Ooh!" the Doctor smiles delightedly at the gadget in his hand, making me smile fondly.
"Put it on," Mrs. Moore encourages him and they put their headlights on, making me snort at how it makes the Doctor's hair look.
"Haven't got a hotdog in there, have you? I'm starving," the Doctor asks.
"Of all the things to wish for! That's mechanically recovered meat!" Mrs. Moore laughs.
"I know," the Doctor grins. "It's the Cyberman of food, but it's tasty," he jokes.
"A proper torch as well," Mrs. Moore takes it out.
"Let's see where we are," Tom moves to the front of the line, walking forward.
Mrs. Moore follows after him and the Doctor pulls me along behind him. Down the tunnel were Cybermen lined along the walls.
"Already converted, just paralyzed," I look at them.
"Come on," the Doctor nods ahead of us before pausing by one of the Cybermen and tapping its face. "Let's go slowly, keep an eye out for trip systems," he warns quietly.
