Boom Town
It had been a couple weeks since Jack joined our Time Travel Trio, making it a Quartet and he fit in quite nicely. He was hilarious, clever, and the fact that he was gorgeous and a shameless flirt didn't hurt either. After a particularly rough trip where Rose and I had been cuffed to a pole, she asked me why I freak out when my wrists are bound and why I always cover my arms. Needless to say she was pissed when she found out what had happened to me and went on a rant about how she was going to kill the person who did that to me. She calmed down after she found out that both Lord Voldemort and Bellatrix are dead.
I was so grateful to have Rose in my life, she really was amazing. After talking everything through and just venting to Rose, I felt relived. Two of the most important people in my life knew. Harry and my friends and Mr. and Mrs. Weasley know; not everything, but most of what happened. It was just refreshing not having to hide anything from the Doctor and Rose. The two of us had spent the rest of the night watching movies, eating snacks, talking and goofing off, just being normal teenage girls.
I slip on my gloves, looking over my outfit. I was wearing a pair of grey skinny jeans; a burgundy, v-neck t-shirt; and brown, suede ankle boots. I throw my hair into a messy bun, slipping my wand into it, and put on some light make-up before heading to the console room. I burst out laughing when I see the Doctor hopping out from under the grating. He was wearing this head-light that looks like a mouth.
"Oh, my Merlin!" I gasp out between laughs.
"What?" the Doctor asks innocently, his lips twitching up as Jack and Rose, who were on the jump-seat, start to laugh as well.
"You look like such a dork!" I wheeze, bending over and clutching my stomach.
"Oi," he protests playfully, flicking my ear. "Come help me with this," he grabs my arm and drags me over to the ladder that leads to the second level.
The Doctor and I were working on the TARDIS when there's a knock on the door.
"I'll get it," Jack beams, jumping up and running to the door, opening it. "Who the hell are you?" he demands.
"What do you mean, who the hell am I? Who the hell are you?" I hear Mickey scoff, making me roll my eyes.
"Pass me that spanner, will you?" the Doctor asks and I hand it over. "Thanks, love," he wiggles his eyebrows and I giggle when the head-light moves up and down.
"Captain Jack Harkness," he introduces quickly. "Whatever your selling, we're not buying," he tries to shut the door.
"Get out of my way!" Mickey yells and pushes past Jack.
"Don't tell me, this must be Mickey," Jack rolls his eyes, shutting the door.
"Here comes trouble! How're you doing, Ricky boy?" the Doctor calls down with a big grin, making me snort.
"It's Mickey!" he calls up indignantly.
"No, it's Ricky!" I call down, smiling widely.
"Don't listen to them, they're winding you up," Rose rolls her eyes and I stick my tongue out at her.
"You look fantastic," Mickey smiles and Rose grins, pulling him into a hug and quick kiss.
I look at the Doctor and make a face, pretending to gag and he chokes on a laugh.
"Aww, sweet, look at these two," Jack coos, watching Mickey and Rose. "Lina, how come I never get any of that?"
"Buy me a drink first, Captain," I smirk down at him as I sonic a few wires and plug them back in.
"You're such hard work," he pouts, folding his arms.
"But so worth it," I wink, making him snort and shake his head.
"You are," the Doctor whispers in my mind, making me drop the sonic as my eyes go wide and I blink up at him.
The Doctor snorts and picks up the sonic, handing it back to me with a wink. I smile widely, my cheeks pink and hearts beating rapidly as I go back to work, the Doctor chuckling beside me.
"Did you manage to find it?" Rose asks.
"There you go," Mickey hands her her passport and I roll my eyes.
"I can go anywhere now!" Rose calls up to me.
"I told you, you don't need a passport!" I call back.
"It's all very well going to platform one and Justicia and the Glass Pyramid of San Kloon but what if we end up in Brazil? I might need it," she retorts. "You see, I'm prepared for anything," she smiles, her tongue in her teeth.
"Sounds like your staying, then," Mickey mutters and makes everyone go quiet and I cringe at the awkwardness. "So, what're you doing in Cardiff? And who the hell's Jumping Jack Flash? I mean, I don't mind you hanging out with big ears up there-"
"Oi!" the Doctor yells down and I cover my mouth, snickering.
"Look in the mirror," Mickey retorts. "But this guy, I don't know, he's kinda..." he trails off.
"Handsome?" Jack and I ask, him sending me a wink and the Doctor rolling his eyes.
"More like cheesy," Mickey deadpans.
"Early 21st Century slang," Jack frowns. "Is cheesy good or bad?"
"It's bad," Mickey informs him.
"But bad means good, isn't that right?" Jack smiles, pointing to Rose, who shakes her head.
"Are you saying I'm not handsome?" the Doctor asks, climbing down the ladder with me behind him.
He pouts as everyone ignores him and I smile: "I'm not saying that... in fact, I'd say quite the opposite," I wink, making him smirk. "Even with the big ears," I giggle and flick his ear-lobe, making him roll his eyes and pinch my side.
"We just stopped off, we need to refuel," Rose says, shaking her head with a smile at the Doctor and I. "Thing is, Cardiff's got this rift running through the middle of the city. It's invisible, but it's like an earthquake fault between different dimensions-"
"The rift was healed back in 1869-" I continue.
"Thanks to a girl named Gwyneth, cause these creatures called the Gelth, they were using the rift as a gateway but she saved the world and closed it-" Rose.
"But closing a rift always leaves a scar, and that scar generates energy, harmless to the Human Race-" Jack.
"But perfect for the TARDIS, so just park it here for a couple of days right on top of the scar and-" the Doctor.
"Open up the engines, soak up the radiation-" I go on.
"Like filling her up with petrol and off we go!" Rose cheers.
"Into time!" Jack beams.
"And space!" we all finish together, high-fiving each other.
"Whoo!" Rose cheers as the four of us laugh.
"My God, have you seen yourselves? You all think you're so clever, don't you?" Mickey asks, looking between us incredulously.
"Yeah!" the Doctor smirks.
"Spot on, Ricky!" I beam.
"Yeah!" Rose giggles.
"Yep!" Jack smiles, lightly slapping Mickey on the cheek as we all head out.
"Should take another twenty-four hours, which means we've got time to kill," the Doctor smiles as he pulls the door shut.
"That old lady's staring," Mickey mutters.
"Probably wondering what five people could do inside a small wooden box," Jack smirks and pats the Doctor on the shoulder, the two of them, Rose, and I snickering.
"What are you captain of? The Innuendo Squad?" Mickey scoffs.
Jack rolls his eyes, making a 'whatever' sign and starts to walk off.
"Wait!" Mickey calls and Jack stops. "Um, the TARDIS, we can't just leave it," he mutters awkwardly. "Doesn't it get noticed?"
"Yeah, what's with the police box? Why does it look like that?" Jack ask, coming back over.
"It's a cloaking device," Rose smiles.
"It's called a chameleon circuit," I correct, leaning against the door with my ankles crossed.
The Doctor smiles and leans next to me: "the TARDIS is meant to disguise itself wherever it lands, like if this was Ancient Rome, it'd be a statue on a plinth or something. But I landed in the 1960s, it disguised itself as a police box, and the circuit got stuck"
"Translation: he broke it and can't fix it," I snort and the Doctor jabs me in the side, making me punch his shoulder.
"So it copied a real thing? There actually was police boxes?" Mickey asks.
"Yeah," I nod, huffing when the Doctor wraps his arms around me, pinning my arms to my sides. "Will you stop with the cheating?" I roll my eyes, trying to wriggle free. "Bastard," I sigh and he smirks, tightening his hold. "Anyway, on street corners... you could phone for help or if they arrested someone; shove 'em in and wait for help to come," I explain.
"Like a little prison cell," the Doctor nods, groaning when I get an arm free and elbow him.
"Ha! I win!" I cheer, jumping out of the way when he tries to slap my arm and hiding behind Rose, who was snickering.
"Why don't you just fix the circuit?" Jack turns to me, trying not to laugh.
"I like it! Don't you?" the Doctor protests.
"I love it!" Rose beams, patting the TARDIS' side.
"She's beautiful, why would I want to change her?" I ask, stroking the door and smiling when she hums under my fingers.
"But that's what I meant! There's no police boxes anymore, so doesn't it get noticed?" Mickey asks, hands on hips and a smug smirk.
"Ricky, Ricky, Ricky," I shake my head, making him scowl at me. "Wanna know something about humans? You put a big ol' mysterious blue box right in the middle of town and what do they do?" I put my hands on his shoulders and look at him seriously. "Walk right past it," I deadpan, the Doctor, Rose, and Jack bursting into snickers while Mickey scowls more. "Now stop your nagging, let's go and explore!" I cheer.
The Doctor grabs my hand and drags me away. Rose comes up and loops her arm through mine: "what's the plan?" she asks, bouncing excitedly.
"I don't know! Cardiff! Early 21st Century," the Doctor smiles. "And the wind's coming from the... East. Trust me, safest place in the universe," he tells her.
"We've got to make a stop first," I smile, pulling the Doctor and Rose in another direction.
"Where?" the Doctor asks.
"There's a wizard pub down the street and George said he'd meet us there," I tell him.
"Why?" he groans, annoyed.
"Cause he's bringing Teddy with him," I smile widely.
"He is?" Rose beams excitedly, making me laugh.
"Who's George and Teddy?" Jack asks from the other side of Rose.
"George is a mate from school and Teddy's my godson," I smile.
"Wait, this is an abandoned building," Rose frowns when I stop in front of the pub.
"Enchantments to keep the Muggles away," I wave off.
"Perception filter," the Doctor retorts.
"Stop it, it's magic," I let go of his hand, pointing up at him.
"Science," he rolls his eyes.
"How do we get in?" Mickey asks, gesturing to him, the Doctor, Rose, and Jack.
"Walk through the front door," I snort, pulling the Doctor and Rose through.
The three of us walk in with Mickey and Jack behind us. I cringe slightly when the whole place goes silent before breaking out in whispers. Rose gives me a questioning look when a little boy, probably about eight, comes up to us.
"Um... Dark Lady, miss, could I have an autograph," he asks shyly, his cheeks red.
I give an inaudible sigh and smile down at him: "sure, sweetie, what's your name?" I ask as he hands me a piece of parchment.
"Eric, miss," he smiles.
I grab a pen from the Doctor's jacket pocket and sign my name and a little note: "there ya are, Eric," I smile.
"Thank you, Dark Lady," he smiles and runs off to his mum.
"People ask you for autographs?" Mickey asks incredulously.
"Fighting the most powerful dark wizard when you're one, 11, 12, 14, and 17 gets you a reputation," I mutter, the Doctor grabbing my hand and squeezing it as Mickey and Jack's eyes widen.
"You know, I've heard rumors about the Dark Lady..." Jack trails off. "It never mentions being a witch, just a powerful being; like a goddess," he mutters, eyeing me.
"Do I look or even act like a goddess?" I snort. "And no, it wouldn't mention me being a witch... but I've been noticed from traveling around and I'm sure some of the rumors are from trips I haven't even had yet," I shrug.
"My, my, can't even come into a pub without being noticed, Miss Evans," a voice makes me smile and turn.
"Eya!" Teddy yells, hopping down from George's arms so he can crash into my legs.
"Not my fault," I roll my eyes and then beam down at Teddy. "How ya doing, Teddy-Bear?" I pick him up and growl into his neck, making him giggle.
"Georgie took me flying!" he bounces up and down on my hip.
"I bet you're the best on a broom," I smile widely. "Better than Harry, yeah?" I smirk and he nods, cheering. "You want to meet my new friends?" I ask.
"Yay, more fwends!" he cheers.
"Ok, this is Jack and Mickey," I turn to them.
"Teddy, sir," Jack stands to attention, giving Teddy a salute.
Teddy hops down from my arms and gives a salute back: "sir," he giggles and copies Jack's hair, who's eyes widen.
"Teddy is a metamor..." Rose trails off.
"Metomorphogus," I supply.
"Metomorphogus, yeah," she points at me. "He can change his appearance at will," she explains to Jack and Mickey, making me smile at her proudly.
"Hey, little man," Mickey kneels down to Teddy and holds his hand out for a fist-bump.
Teddy smiles at him and gives him a fist-bump back before frowning: "you don't look like a mouse..." he eyes him, changing his nose to a mouse nose and wiggling it.
"Oh, my God, I forgot how adorable you are," Rose smiles.
"Rosie!" Teddy cheers and runs to her, giggling as he copies her eyes.
"Eva," George smirks, pulling me into a hug.
"Hiya, Georgie," I smile up at him when I pull away.
Jack comes over and eyes George up and down: "Captain Jack Harkness," he smirks, holding his hand out.
"George Weasley, and sorry mate, don't lean that way," he smiles, shaking Jack's hand.
"Can't blame a guy for trying," Jack winks, making me and the Doctor laugh.
"George," the Doctor holds his hand out.
"Doctor," he smirks, squeezing his hand tightly, making me roll my eyes. "Been taking care of Eva?" he raises an eyebrow.
"Of course I have," he says indignantly.
"Stop it," I slap their hands and they let go of each other. "George, the Doctor would never purposefully put me in danger," I roll my eyes, making the Doctor smirk smugly.
"So, what's the plan, then?" Mickey cuts in.
"Let's go explore, never been to Cardiff before," Jack shrugs.
After a few hours of shopping and chasing Teddy around, the seven of us stop at a restaurant to eat. I was sitting between the Doctor and George with Teddy in my lap and Rose was sitting between Jack and Mickey across from us.
"I swear, six feet tall and with tusks-" Jack was telling us about one of his adventures.
"You're lying through your teeth!" the Doctor laughs.
"I'd've gone bonkers! That's the word, bonkers!" Rose chokes out between her out laughter.
"I mean, it turns out the white things are tusks and I mean tusks! And it's woken, and it's not happy-"
"How could you not know it was there?" George asks incredulously around laughing.
"And we're standing there, fifteen of us, naked-"
"Naked!?" Rose and I squeak out as I cover Teddy's ears.
"And I'm like, oh, no, no, it's got nothing to do with me!" Jack continues. "And then it roars, and we are running. Oh my God, we are running! And Brakovitch falls, so I turn to him and I say-"
"I knew we should've turned left!" Mickey finishes and we all laugh hysterically.
"That's my line!" Jack glares playfully, still laughing.
"I don't believe you, I don't believe a word you say ever, that is so brilliant!" Rose giggles.
"Did you ever get your clothes back?" George asks.
"No, I just picked him up went right for the ship, full throttle, didn't stop until I hit the spacelanes, I was shaking!" Jack tells us. "It was unbelievable, I'm freaking out and by the time I got there I was fifteen light-years away I was like this!"
"And I was having such a nice day," the Doctor mutters and we look over to see him holding up a newspaper.
My eyes widen when I see Margaret Blaine, the woman who the Slitheen was pretending to be, was the new Mayor of Cardiff.
The seven us of us head to city hall and stand in the lobby together.
"According to intelligence, the target is the last surviving member of the Slitheen family, a criminal sect from the planet Raxacoricofallapatorious, masquerading as a human being, zipped inside a skin suit," Jack tells us, looking at his vortex manipulator.
"Yeah... Hermione told us about them," George nods. "Not exactly a friendly lot, are they?"
"Nope," I shake my head.
"Ok, plan of attack, we assume a basic fifty seven/fifty six strategy, covering all available exits on the ground floor. Doctor and Lina, you go face-to-face, that'll designate Exit One; I'll cover Exit Two; Rose, you're Exit Three; Mickey Smith, you take Exit Four; and George Weasley, you take Exit Five," Jack orders. "Have you got that?"
"Who the hell does he think he is?" the Doctor scoffs in my mind and I snort, seeing his incredulous expression. "Excuse me," he gives Jack a pointed look. "Who's in charge?"
"Sorry... awaiting orders, sir," Jack rolls his eyes, facing forward.
"Right, here's the plan," the Doctor leans in and I raise an eyebrow, knowing he didn't actually have a plan. "Like he said, nice plan," he beams. "Anything else?"
"Present arms," Jack orders and we all get our mobiles out.
"Ready!"
"Speed dial?"
"Yup," the Doctor nods.
"Ready," Rose smiles.
"Check," Mickey nods.
"Mate," George and I smirk. "Ehhh!" we high-five.
"See ya in hell," Jack grins, walking off with everyone going their separate ways.
"Hop on, Teddy-Bear," I smile, kneeling down.
Teddy giggles and hops on my back: "ok, don't let go for anything, go that?" I look back at him as I straighten up.
"Yes, ma'am," he salutes me, making me giggle and the Doctor chuckle.
"And don't use any magic, this place is run by Muggles, alright?" I ask and he nods.
"Come on, then," the Doctor smiles and walk off, me and Teddy behind him.
The three of us get to the secretary's desk, just outside the Mayor's office: "hello! We've come to see the Lord Mayor," the Doctor smiles.
"Have you got an appointment?" the secretary asks.
"Nope, just some old friends passing by, bit of a surprise, can't wait to see her face!" the Doctor beams, making me snort.
"Well, she's just having a cup of tea," the secretary says apologetically.
"Just go in there, and tell her the Doctor and Evangeline are here for a visit," I smile.
"Doctor who?" the secretary asks and I shake my head, smiling.
"Just the Doctor," he smirks. "Tell her exactly that: the Doctor and Evangeline."
"Hold on a tick..." the secretary stands and walks into the office.
The Doctor and I wait and share a smirk when glass breaks.
"What's dat?" Teddy asks.
"That, Teddy, is the Mayor trying to get away," the Doctor tells him.
"We gonna chase her?" he asks.
"Yup, so hold on tight," I smile and he tightens his arms and legs around me.
The secretary slips through the door: "the Lord Mayor says thank you fo-for popping by... she'd love to have a chat, but, um... she's up to her eyes in paperwork," he stutters out. "Perhaps if you could make an appointment for next week...?" he trails off, chuckling nervously.
"She's climbing out the window, isn't she?" I raise an eyebrow.
"Yes, she is," the secretary admits sheepishly.
"Thought so," I nod and the Doctor and I smirk before pushing past him.
The two of us, Teddy on my back, run in and see the window to the balcony open. I run over and see her climbing down a scaffolding.
"Slitheen heading North," the Doctor calls into his phone.
"Leave the Mayor alone!" the secretary grabs a hold of the Doctor and I roll my eyes, running over to the ladder.
"Oh, Mags!" I call teasingly.
I run after her and see her stop when Rose and Jack block her path. She turns to me and snarls when I smile widely and runs off in the opposite direction.
"Margaret!" the Doctor calls from behind me.
The Doctor, Rose, Jack, and I meet at one end.
"Who was on Exit Four and Five!?" Jack demands.
"That was Mickey and George!" Rose pants out.
"Here I am!" Mickey comes up beside us.
"Mickey the idiot," the Doctor rolls his eyes, making me snort.
"Oh, be fair, she's not exactly gonna outrun us, is she?" Rose gestures to Margaret.
"I think you lot are forgetting something," I fold my arms.
George appears at the end of the alley with his wand out and pointed at Margaret: 'Petricficus Totalus'. Her body stiffens and she whimpers, falling backward.
"Wizard," I smirk.
"Georgie!" Teddy cheers, hopping off my back and running to George.
I walk over with the Doctor, Rose, Jack, and Mickey behind me. I roll my eyes when I see a teleport device in Margaret's hand and pry it from her grasp.
"That's cheating," Jack shakes his head, taking the device from me as I take the body-bind curse off.
"Nice shot, Georgie," I smile up at him.
"Thank you, m'lady," he bows in a posh manner, making Rose and I laugh.
"This is persecution," Magaret glares at all of us, standing and brushing herself off. "Why can't you leave me alone? What did I ever do to you?"
"You tried to kill me, my friends, and destroy this entire planet," the Doctor glares back.
"Apart from that," she waves off.
"You don't look like an alien," Teddy eyes her, hiding behind my legs.
"What do you know, you freaky little brat," she glares, making Teddy cry and grip my legs.
"George, take Teddy," I say calmly and push him toward George, who smirks and lifts Teddy up, pushing his face into his neck.
I draw my fist back and punch Margaret in the face, making her groan and fall back down.
"Eva!" Rose gasps in shock, her hand over her mouth as the Doctor and Jack try not to laugh.
I ignore them and grab the front of Margaret's shirt, lifting her face to mine: "don't ever insult my godson again, have you got that?" I snarl, dropping her back down. "Come here, Teddy-Bear," I take him back from George and wipe his eyes. "You alright?"
"Yeah," he nods and wraps his arms around me, burying his face in my neck.
"You're not a freak or a brat, you're brilliant and amazing, just like your mum and dad," I whisper to him and he sniffles, hugging me tightly. "Someone lift her up and bring her in with us," I glare down at Margaret.
"On it," Jack helps the Doctor lift her and we all head into the exhibition room.
"So, you're a Slitheen, you're on Earth, you're trapped," the Doctor folds his arms and looks over the model in the room. "Your family get killed but you teleport out, just in the nick of time. You have no means of escape. What do you do? You build a nuclear power station," he gestures to the model. "But what for?"
"A philanthropic gesture, I've learnt the error of my ways," Margaret shrugs and I smirk to myself at the bruise forming on the right side of her face.
"Yeah, because insulting a three year old really screams 'I've learned my lesson'," George rolls his eyes, looking at the model.
"And it just so happens to be right on top of the rift," I nod to the power plant.
"What rift would that be?" Margaret asks 'innocently'.
"A rift in space and time," Jack informs her unnecessarily. "If this power station went into meltdown, the entire planet would go schwwwupboom!" he mimes an explosion.
"This station is designed to explode the minute it reaches capacity," I frown, readjusting Teddy on my hip.
"Didn't anyone notice? Isn't there someone in London checking this sort of stuff?" Rose asks incredulously.
"We're in Cardiff, London doesn't care!" Margaret scoffs. "The South Wales coast could fall into the sea and they wouldn't notice... oh... I sound like a Welshman," she blinks. "God help me, I've gone native," she grimaces.
"But why would she do that? A great big explosion, she'd only end up killing herself," Mickey frowns.
"She's got a name, you know," she glares.
"She's not even a she, she's a thing," Mickey glares back.
"Oh, but she's clever," the Doctor mutters, pulling out the middle part of the model and my eyes widen.
"-Fantastic!" "-Wicked!" the Doctor and I both breathe out.
"Is that a tribophysical waveform macro-kinetic extrapolator!?" Jack asks excitedly.
"Couldn't have put it better myself," the Doctor praises.
"Ooh, genius!" Jack beams, taking it from the Doctor. "You didn't build this," he nods to Margaret.
"I have my hobbies, a little tinkering..." she shrugs nonchalantly.
"No, Mags, he means you really didn't build it," I roll my eyes.
"Way beyond you," Jack agrees.
"I bet she stole it," George folds his arms.
"It fell into my hands," she waves off.
"Is it a weapon?" Rose asks, eyeing it warily.
Jack places the extrapolator down on the floor: "it's transport," he retorts as he stands on it. "You see, the reactor blows, the rift opens, phenomenal cosmic disaster, but this thing shrouds you in a forcefield, you have this energy bubble, zzhum, so you're safe," he explains, miming a bubble going around him. "Then you feed it coordinates, stand on top, and ride the concussion all the way out of the solar system."
"It's a surfboard!" Mickey beams, getting it.
"A pan-dimensional surfboard, yeah," I nod. "Good job, both of ya," I smile between them.
"And it would've worked," Margaret grinds out.
"If it wasn't for us meddling kids?" I snort and she glares at me.
"What?" George frowns.
"Muggle TV show," Rose waves off and he nods slowly.
"I would've surfed away from this dead-end dump and back to civilization," Margaret glares.
"You'd blow up a whole planet just to get a lift?" George asks her, glaring.
"Like stepping on an anthill," Margaret snarls.
"How'd you think of the name?" the Doctor asks suddenly an I turn to see him staring at the project banner.
My eyes widen and I hand Teddy to George, walking over to the Doctor.
"What, Blaidd Drwg? It's Welsh," Margaret tells him.
"Yeah," I nod. "But how did you think of it?"
"Chose it at random, that's all I don't know... just sounded good," she shrugs. "Does it matter?"
"Blaidd Drwg," the Doctor mutters, his eyebrows furrowed.
"What's it mean?" Rose asks.
"Bad Wolf," I mutter, a chill running down my spine.
"But I've heard that before, Bad Wolf," Rose says. "I've heard that lots of times..."
"Everywhere we go, two words, following us," the Doctor nods. "Bad Wolf..."
"How can they be following us?" Rose alas shakily.
I turn to see her worried and scared expression and share a quick glance with the Doctor: "nah, it's nothing," I smile.
"Just a coincidence! Like hearing a word on the radio then hearing it all day," the Doctor agrees. "Never mind! Things to do," he claps his hands. "Margaret, we're gonna take you home," he points to her and starts to walk off.
"Hold on, isn't that the easy option, like letting her go?" Jack asks.
"I don't believe it!" Rose beams. "We actually get to go to Raxa..." she trails off and the Doctor rolls his eyes. "Wait a minute! Raxacor..."
"Raxacoricofallapatorius," he tells her.
"Raxacorico..."
"... fallapatorius," I nod.
"Raxacoricofallapatorius!" she says quickly.
"That's it!" I beam.
"I did it!" Rose squeals and throws her arms around me and the two of us laugh as we jump up and down, the boys joining in.
"They have the death penalty," Margaret cuts in, causing everyone to go silent.
"Way to kill the mood..." I mutter, pulling away from Rose.
"The family Slitheen was tried in its absence many years ago and found guilty. With no chance of appeal. According to the statutes of government, the moment I return, I am to be executed. What do you make of that, Doctor, Evangeline? Take me home and you take me to my death," she sneers at us.
"Not our problem," the Doctor shrugs and grabs my hand, pulling me out of the room.
When we get back to the TARDIS, Teddy had fallen asleep and George was taking him home to his grandmother. I was outside, telling him goodbye.
"Don't go so long before visiting next time, yeah?" George asks, holding Teddy.
"I'll try not to," I sigh. "It's just... out there... I forgot what it was like," I mutter.
"Hey, I'm not asking you to leave him," George assures me. "That's not fair, I mean, we both know you'd pick me," he smirks, making me snort, shaking my head. "Just... when you come home, you're coming home for us," he tucks a hair behind my.
"George, you're one of my best mates, I'll always come back for you," I tell him firmly, pulling him into a hug, being careful of Teddy. "I love you," I smile up at him.
"Love you, too," he ruffles my hair. "See ya, then," he smiles, kissing my forehead.
"See ya," I smile, leaning up to kiss his cheek and then kissing Teddy on the head. "Bye, Teddy-Bear," I whisper.
"Oh, by the way, hell of a slugger," George winks, making me giggle before he walks off.
"It's not compatible... but it should knock off about twelve hours," Jack was telling the Doctor when I walk in. "We'll be ready to go by morning," he smiles.
"Then we're stuck here overnight," I sigh, making Rose and Jack jump, but the Doctor ignores me, making me frown.
"I'm in no hurry..." Margaret smiles.
"We've got a prisoner! The police box is really... a police box," Rose says excitedly.
"You're not just police, though," Margaret retorts. "Since you're taking me to my death, that makes you my executioners... each and every one of you," she smiles pleasantly.
"Well, you deserve it," Mickey glares at her coldly.
"You're very quick to say so," Margaret snaps. "You're very quick to soak your hands in my blood. Which makes you better than me, how, exactly...?" she wonders, getting no reply. "Long night ahead..." she smirks, going over and siting in the jump-seat. "Let's see who can look me in the eye," she mutters, looking at everyone.
No one can look at her for more than a second. I try to hold her gaze, but I look away quickly, going over to stand by the Doctor. He tenses slightly and I frown, looking at the monitor. I frown more when I see it was on and looking outside.
"Did you... did you spy on me?" I ask him and he ignores me, messing with the console with a scowl on his face. "Oh, my Merlin, you're an idiot," I roll my eyes, walking over to Jack to help him with the extrapolator.
I watch as Mickey walks out and then Rose follows a minute later... hope she's ok. I look up to see the Doctor still messing with the console with a scowl as he glances at me every couple seconds.
"What, no spying on her? No getting pissed at her for no reason?" I glare at him.
"No reason!?" the Doctor turns to me incredulously and I raise an eyebrow as Jack and Margaret turn to him in confusion.
The Doctor blinks, realizing he said that out loud and goes back to working on the console.
"Uh... Lina?" Jack asks, looking between the Doctor and I.
"Don't worry about it," I glare down at the extrapolator. "The Doctor is being a child," I roll my eyes.
"You alright?" he asks, wrapping an arm around my shoulders.
"Fine," I nod and he kisses my cheek.
"I didn't realize how easy you were with your affection," the Doctor grumbles in my mind.
I drop the pliers I was using in shock and hurt as the TARDIS hums angrily at the Doctor. Jack looks at me worriedly but I just stare ahead, picking at my glove.
"You're a right git," I whisper before putting up my mental blocks and getting a little satisfaction when I hear the Doctor hiss. "I'll be outside," I stand and give Jack the pliers before heading out, sending a glare at the Doctor in the way.
I lean against the door and pick at my glove as tears prickle my eyes. How dare he say that! Act like that just because I told George I love him, he has no right! It's his bloody fault for spying on me! I'm not easy... am I? How could he-? My thoughts are cut off by Margaret and the Doctor coming out of the TARDIS, hand in hand.
"Where are you two going?" I ask, wiping my eyes before going back to picking at my glove.
"Oh, the Doctor and I have got a date," Margaret smirks at me, making me scoff. "Dinner in bondage," she raises her wrist and I see a metal bracelet on her and the Doctor's wrists.
"Have fun," I roll my eyes, going back into the TARDIS.
"What did the Doctor say to you?" Jack asks immediately.
"Nothing, Captain, I'm fine," I mutter, siting in the jump-seat and folding my arms.
"Sure, that's why you're glaring at the floor," he rolls his eyes.
"He spied on me saying bye to George," I mutter.
"Yeah, we saw," he snorts, making me look up at him. "Honestly, I can see why he'd be pissed, you and George did look pretty intimate out there," he tells me, still working on the extrapolator.
"Do you think I'm easy?" I ask, shifting on my seat when he looks at me sharply.
"What? Lina, why would you ask- did the Doctor say that?" he asks, his voice getting low.
"Forget it," I murmur, looking away and picking at my glove.
"Lina-"
"Just drop it, alright?" I snap and head to my room.
I lay on my bed, staring at the ceiling as the TARDIS plays soft music for me. I start to drift off when an alarm goes off and the whole place shakes. I get up and shakily run to the console room, seeing the whole thing smoking.
"What have you done to her!?" I scream, running over and holding up the extrapolator to see it was unhooked.
"What the hell are you doing?" the Doctor shouts, coming in.
"It just went crazy!" Jack yells as I look at the monitor.
"It's the rift! Time and space are ripping apart," the Doctor yells. "The whole city's gonna disappear!"
"It's the extrapolator! I've disconnected it but it's still feeding off the engine! It's using the TARDIS! I can't stop it!" Jack shouts.
"Bloody Cardiff," I roll my eyes as the three of us work. "The whole planet's gonna be ripped open!"
"What is it? What's happening!?" Rose runs in.
"Oh, just little me!" Margaret shouts and I turn in time to see her arm free as she grabs Rose by the neck.
I growl, getting my wand out as I move forward.
"One wrong move and she snaps like a promise," Margaret threatens and I back off, staring at Rose as she tries to claw the hand from around her neck.
"I might've known," the Doctor glares at her.
"I've had you bleating all night, poor baby, now shut it," she glares right back. "You, fly boy, put the extrapolator at my feet," she orders Jack.
Jack hesitates and Margaret tightens her hold on Rose. I take the extrapolator and slide it over to her, my hearts beating rapidly.
"Thank you, just as I planned," Margaret smiles at me and I tighten my grip on my wand.
"I thought you needed to blow up the nuclear power station," Rose chokes out.
"Failing that, if I were to be... arrested... then anyone capable of tracking me down would have considerable technology of their own. Therefore, they would be captivated by the extrapolator. Especially a magpie mind like yours, Doctor. So the extrapolator was programmed to go to Plan B! To lock onto the nearest alien power source and open the rift. And what a power source it found... I'm back on schedule... thanks to you," Margaret sneers at all of us.
"The rift's gonna convulse, she'll destroy the whole planet!" Jack yells.
"And you with it!" Margaret retorts, standing on the extrapolator, still holding Rose. "While I ride this board over the crest of the inferno all the way to freedom. Stand back... surf's up."
The TARDIS hums furiously and her heart opens up, bright light pouring from it.
"Of course, opening the rift means you'll pull this ship apart," I say lightly, an edge to my voice.
"So sue me," Margaret glares at me.
"It's not just any old power source, it's the TARDIS," the Doctor folds his arms. "Our TARDIS, the best ship in the universe," he says.
"It'll make wonderful scrap," she sneers.
"What's that light?" Rose chokes out.
"It's alright, doll, don't look at it," I tell her calmly.
"The heart of the TARDIS," the Doctor explains. "This ship's alive, you've opened its soul."
"It's ... so bright..." Margaret whispers, breathing heavily.
"Look at it, Margaret..." I say soothingly.
"... beautiful..." she stares at the light.
"Look inside, Blon Fel Fotch, look at the light," the Doctor tells her.
Margaret loosens her grip on Rose just enough for her to escape and I rush over, pulling her into my arms: "are you alright, doll? She didn't hurt you too bad, did she?" I ask, looking at her neck frantically and growling lowly when I see the red marks.
"I'm fine," she whispers shakily, wrapping her arms around me and burying her face in my neck.
"Thank you..." Margaret whispers and she's engulfed by the light, her skin-suit flopping to the foot.
The Doctor hurries and closes the heart of the TARDIS: "don't look, stay there, close your eyes!" he orders. "Now, Jack, come on, shut it all down, shut down!" he tells Jack, who rushes over to the console.
The Doctor turns to me, but goes back to work when he sees me holding a shaken Rose.
"It's alright, she's gone," I whisper to her, rubbing her back.
"Nicely done, thank you," the Doctor smiles at Jack when the TARDIS calms down.
"What happened to Margaret?" Rose asks, pulling away from me.
"Must've got burnt up, carried out her own death sentence," Jack shrugs.
"No, I don't think she's dead," I mutter, looking down at the skin-suit.
"Then, where'd she go?" Rose frowns.
"She looked into the heart of the TARDIS, and even I don't know how strong that is," the Doctor mutters, coming over. "And the ship's telepathic, like I told you, Rose. Gets inside your head. Translates alien languages. Maybe the raw energy can translate all sorts of thoughts..." he kneels down and pulls out an egg with little dreads on it. "Here she is!" he smiles.
"She's an egg?" Rose asks, looking at it in shock.
"Regressed to her childhood," I nod.
"She's an egg?" Jack asks, staring at the egg.
"She can start again! Live her life from scratch," the Doctor smiles. "If we take her home, give her to a different family, tell 'em to bring her up properly, she might be alright!"
"Or she might be worse," Jack points out.
"That's her choice," I shrug.
"She's an egg," Rose repeats.
"She's an egg," the Doctor nods, laughing lightly.
"Oh, my God! Mickey..." Rose runs out of the TARDIS.
"Eva..." the Doctor turns to me.
"Don't," I hold my hand up. "Just... don't," I shake my head, turning and heading back to my room.
After a while my door opens and I sit up to see Rose: "hey," she sighs. "Mickey's gone..."
"I'm sorry," I tell her, patting the spot next to me.
"The Doctor's being all mopey, what's that about?" she asks, lying back.
I draw my knees up and hug my legs: "he told me I was easy..." I mutter.
"He did what!?" Rose shoots up. "Oh, he's so dead," she growls, rushing from my room.
My eyes widen and I hurry after her. She walks into the console room and marches up to the Doctor, slapping him across the face. The Doctor groans and grabs his cheek while I stare at Rose in shock, along with Jack.
"How dare you!" Rose hits the Doctor on the arm. "You! Total! Prat!" she hits him over and over.
"Oi, what the hell have I done?" the Doctor yells, dodging her slaps before falling silent as he sees me.
"Remember, do you!?" Rose glares at him. "You! Insensitive! Dick!" she slaps him a few more times. "Fix it, now!"
"Ok, I feel like I'm out of some loop," Jack mutters.
"The Doctor told Eva she was easy," Rose glares, making him wince.
"I didn't mean-"
"Ass!" Jack yells, punching him in the arm.
"Oi, stop hitting me, will you?" the Doctor whines, grabbing his arm. "Eva," he turns to me. "I didn't mean... I was angry and I don't know what came over me," he mutters.
"You had no right," I shake my head, tears pickling my eyes as I pick at my glove.
The Doctor comes over and wipes my tears away: "Eva," he tries cautiously and I take my walls down. "I'm sorry, love," he whispers, cupping my face.
I search his eyes, seeing nothing but guilt and sincerity: "please don't let your jealously turn into a petulant arse again," I mutter, pulling him into a hug and he chuckles lightly.
"You were right, I was being a git," he chuckles lightly, making me snort.
"I do love George, but not in that way," I murmur.
Not the way I love you... a voice says in my head and I blink a few times. Stupid subconscious, I roll my eyes.
"Good," Rose claps, making the Doctor and I jump slightly. "So, are we gonna pop this egg off, or what?" she asks.
"Yeah," I smile. "I call piloting!" I cheer, rushing over to the console.
