Idiots Lantern

Violet was in her room in the Tardis, which had been given to her by the Doctor, flipping through shelves and throwing various cushions in all sorts of directions, she was looking for something. Something she prayed she hadn't lost because if it was lost then she didn't know what she would do.

''Looking for something,'' Jones's voice coming from the door startled her, so in defence she turned and through a cushion at him. Luckily he grabbed it before it hit his face, not that it would have done much damage anyway.

''Sorry and yes I am,'' Violet replied not even telling him what she was looking for.

''Is it this,'' Violet turned round and gasped. In between his finger and thumb Jones held a diamond ring.

''Where was it, I'd thought I lost it,'' She asked running up to him and took it from him as he handed it to her.

''In my pocket because you gave it to me just before we stepped into the Tardis for the first,'' Jones said sighing as he realised Violet had already forgotten.

''Oh, right thanks,'' She replied taking the ring she now had in her hands and putting it in a ring box that was in her bedside draw.

''I don't understand why you don't where?'' Jones asked watching as she shut the door with the ring now inside.

''Because if the Doctor see's it then he'll ask questions, and I don't want him to know right now,'' Violet explained grabbing a leather jacket from inside of her wardrobe to go with the 1950's dress she had picked out. The Doctor had promised the group to take them to see Elvis. Even though Violet and Jones had no idea who he was, they were still both excited about it.

''Why not?'' Jones asked. He himself was dressed in suit (without a tie, Jones hated ties) with his blazer undone and dress shoes on his feet.

''I've waited over 200 years to see him, I want to spend as much time with him as possible right know,'' Violet explained while looking at her outfit in the mirror.

''He has a time machine Vi,'' Jones pointed out.

''Exactly so he can just drop us off five minutes after we left, but for us we would have spent a long time with him and five minutes would have gone by,'' Violet spoke completely turning Jones's point on its head. ''Come lets go Rose and the Doctor are probably waiting for us.'' With that Violet grabbed Jones's hand and dragged him out into the control room, before then opening the Tardis doors to see Rose and the Doctor already outside waiting for them.

''Took your time,'' Rose called from the back of the moped her and the Doctor were sat on.

''Sorry Jones couldn't decide what shoes he wanted to wear,'' Violet shot back causing Rose to laugh.

''Alright, that enough we've got a show to catch, I found a moped for you two as well,'' The Doctor pointed towards a red moped off to the left of where Violet and Jones were standing.

After a debate between Violet and Jones as to who was going to be sat on the front of the moped, Violet won, the four were cruising down the road when Violet just about heard Rose ask the Doctor where they were going.

''Ed Sullivan TV Studios. Elvis did Hound Dog on one of the shows. There were loads of complaints. Bit of luck, we'll just catch it,'' The Doctor shouted loud enough for everyone to hear.

''And that'll be TV studios in, what, New York?''Rose asked.

'That's the one,'' Violet begun to giggle at the Doctor's response when she noticed a big red London bus drive across the road in front of them.

On seeing the bus both the Doctor and Violet stopped by post box. Looking around she saw that hung up on the side of houses and between lampposts were Union Jack flags.

''Looks a lot like London to me,'' Jones whispered to Violet and she nodded in agreement.

''Ha! Digging that New York vibe,'' She heard Rose joke from behind the Doctor.

''Well, this could still be New York. I mean, this looks very New York to me. Sort of Londony New York, mind,'' The Doctor rambled as the four got of their mopeds and begun to walk a little down the street,

''What are all the flags for?'' Rose asked.

''Actually yeah what are the flags for,'' Jones asked again as he looked up at the ones that hung above him with the help of two lampposts.

However the Doctor wasn't paying attention to their questions instead, very much like Violet was he was intrigued by a man in a brown coat, who had just given a TV to another man from the back of a van. The van read Magpie's electricals on the side of it.

''There you go, sir, all wired up for the great occasion,'' The man said before shutting the back of his van shut.

''The great occasion, what do you mean?'' The Doctor asked walking up to the man with the other is tow behind him.

''Where've you been living, out in the Colonies? Coronation, of course,'' The man Violet presumed was called Magpie replied unable to believe he had even been asked that question.

''What Coronation's that then?''

''What do you mean? The Coronation,'' Magpie was confused by the Doctor's question, it seemed.

''It's the Queen's. Queen Elizabeth,'' Rose piped up realising what the man had been on about.

''Oh! Is this 1953?'' The Doctor said finally realising himself.

''Last time I looked. Time for a lovely bit of pomp and circumstance, what we do best,'' Magpie replied grinning a little.

''Look at all the TV aerials, looks like everyone's got one. That's weird. My Nan said tellies were so rare they all had to pile into one house,'' Rose pointed out looking up at the roofs of the houses.

''Why are there so many, I mean it's only 1953, I pretty sure not a lot of people can afford TV's,'' Violet added asking a question of her own.

''Not around here, love. Magpie's Marvellous Tellies, only five quid a pop,'' Magpie replied.

''Five quid,'' Jones spluttered out in a rush unable to believe what the man had just said.

''Oh, but this is a brilliant year. Classic! Technicolour, Everest climbed everything off the ration. The nation throwing off the shadows of war and looking forward to a happier, brighter future,'' The Doctor seemed to have gone of topic, as he remembered more about the year 1953.

Violet was about to ask why Magpie was practically giving the TV's away, when the shout of a woman, stopped her before she could so much as open her mouth.

''Someone help me, please! Ted!'' The group of four turned to see a woman shout as two men in black suits lead a man out of her house, before trying to buddle them into a black car.

The thing that caught Violets attention was that the man seemed to have a blanket over his head.

''What's going on?'' The Doctor said running over, at the same time a young boy exited his house from next door.

''Oi, what are you doing?'' He shouted at one of the men as he went to comfort the woman.

''Police business. Now, get out of the way, sir,'' The man replied pushing past the boy, then getting the car.

''Who did they take? Do you know him?'' Rose asked the boy as she came running up.

''Must be Mister Gallagher,'' He answered as the car engine started and it started to drive away down the road.

''It's happening all over the place. They're turning into monsters,'' He said becoming scared.

''I'm sorry did you just say monsters?'' Violet asked the boy, but before her could give her an answer, a rather large looking man begun to shout at him.

''Tommy! Not one word! Get inside now!''

''Sorry. I'd better do as he says,'' Tommy apologised before running back to his house.

''Violet, Rose and the Doctor have gone,'' Jones pointed out as he watched the two ride off after the car on the blue moped.

''They'll be back in about a minute,'' Violet said waving Jones's comment off with a shrug.

''Vi they were right behind them, it's not like they'll loose...'' His words were cut off when the familiar sound of a mopeds engine became very loud once again. ''Oh let me guess you lost them,'' Jones spoke sighing.

''Yeah, we did,'' The Doctor confirmed with a shake of his head, ''don't know how though,'' He added getting off the moped.

''So what are we going to do know?'' Jones asked crossing his arms.

''Isn't it obvious, the boy, Tommy I think his name was, he said something about monsters. We need to ask him about them,'' Violet explained.

''And she's got it in one,'' The Doctor cried with a smile on his face. The action even made Jones crack a small smile.
-------------------------------------

''Are you sure this is the right house?'' The Doctor asked turning to his daughter.

''Yeah, I'm sure his father I think it was called him and he ran in here,'' Violet replied with a nod of her head, confirming they were indeed about to knock on the right door.

''Hi!'' All four of them said at the same time, startling the man that Violet recognise as defiantly being Tommy's father.
''Who are you, then?'' The man asked dragging his over each of them in turn.

''Let's see, then. Judging by the look of you, family man, nice house, decent wage, fought in the war, therefore I represent Queen and country,'' The Doctor said holding up what Violet noticed, was psychic paper.

''Just doing a little check of her forthcoming Majesty's subjects before the great day. Don't mind if I come in? Nah, I didn't think you did. Thank you,'' With that said all four of them pushed past the man at the door and into the house.
The first room they entered was the Living room. Violet took note of how big the room was for only the three. However, judging by the armchair that sat in the corner, someone else should also have been in the room. She took a deep breath and sniffed through her nose, being a time Lady her nose was very sensitive to smells.

She distinctively smelt soap with a hint of vanilla, the same smell that overwhelmed her once she's entered the house. The thing that struck her as odd was she had stood next to everyone in the room including the women who stood to greet her when she had arrived. Not one of them carried the scent, meaning some else was in the house, possibly locked away.

''I'm going to look upstairs, make sure nobody notice's I'm gone,'' Violet whispered to Jones as she crept out of the room.

Once out of the room she sniffed the air, yet again the smell of soap and Vanilla was potent, this time she could tell it was coming from upstairs. So slowly, with trying to make as less noise as possible, Violet begun to climb the stairs. It took her longer than it normally would, but that was only because she didn't want to alert those downstairs as to where she was.
It was when she reached the landing, her suspicions, that someone was upstairs were right because from behind one of the doors loud thumps could be heard. It seemed the thumps had alerted the other downstairs because it wasn't long be for her father came running up closely followed behind the boy, Tommy.

''Doctor, who's in there?'' She asked as she watched Tommy use a key to unlock the door.

''I don't know, a monster,'' He said jokingly but she wasn't in the mood. Something strange was going on, there were so many things that just weren't right.

''Gran? It's Tommy. It's all right, Gran. I've brought help,'' Tommy spoke softly as he opened the door. The room was dark so he had to reach over to turn on the light.

''No wonder they covered his face with the blanket,'' Jones muttered as an old women, who liely had no face, slowly approached them.

''Her face is completely gone,'' The Doctor was in shock as he took his sonic out to scan her face.

''But, how is that possible,'' Violet asked going over to join him.

''Scarcely an electrical impulse left. Almost complete neural shutdown. She's ticking over. It's like her brain has been wiped clean,'' The Doctor muttered, unable to answer Violets question.

''What're we going to do, Doctor? We can't even feed her,'' Tommy asked, he seemed to love his Gran very much and Violet felt sorry for the boy.

''We'll work something out buddy,'' Jones walked over to boy putting his hand on the boy as a sign of reassurance. ''Won't we?'' He then asked looking between, Violet and the Doctor.

Before anyone could answer there was a loud bang, which Violet believed must have been someone braking in through the front door.

''We've got company,'' Rose pointed out, rather obviously.

''It's them. They've come for her!'' The women, Tommy's mother cried out.

''Quickly, what was she doing before this happened? Where was she? Tell me. Quickly, think!'' The Doctor directed the question more to Tommy than anyone else in the room.

''I can't think! She doesn't leave the house! She was just,'' Tommy stopped talking as two muscles men wearing black burst into the room.

''Hold on a minute. There are three important, brilliant, and complicated reasons why you should listen to me. One,'' The man punched the Doctor in the face before he could finfish speaking.

''Doctor!'' Rose shouted rushing over to him.

''Jones come one we've got to stop them,'' Violet called over to the solider and they, we great difficulty made their way down the stairs, pushing past the Connolly family as they did. Once they'd reached the front door, Tommy's Gran was already being bundled into the car.

''Hey,'' Jones ran up attempting to push the men away, instead he got punched and knocked out, very much like the Doctor did.

''Jones,'' Violet shouted running up and kneeling down beside her friend.

''Violet, Rose come on before we lose them again,'' Upon hearing her name she leapt up to see the Doctor putting his moped helmet on. With no sign of Rose coming out of the house Violet made a split decision to jump on the back of the blue moped with her father.

''I'll come back,'' She whispered towards Jones before her and her father sped off looking for the men who had taken Tommy's Gran and countless others that had changed like her.

The Doctor and Violet followed the truck down the street and managed to catch up with it in time to see it become concealed behind a wooden set of doors and hidden as a market place.

''Oh, very good. Very good,'' The Doctor exclaimed.

''Yes that is very cleaver,'' Violet nods in agreement.

To be able to enter the hidden place the Doctor and Violet had to ditch the moped and find another entrance. Slowly and carefully, without being spotted by the 'Market me,' they make their way over to a metal gate. The gate was locked, but that didn't stop them as the Doctor pulled out his sonic and broke the lock.

''Look,'' Violets points to the two men, who still have hold of Tommy's Gran, as they disappear into what looked like to be an abandoned warehouse. However, Violet bet that, that was where the people who had no faces were being held.
The two waited for the men to leave before they proceeded to enter the buildings themselves. Yet again the door was locked and yet again the Doctor used his sonic to unlock it. When they did entire the building, Violet was shocked at what she saw. There had to be at least fifty if not a hundred people, men and women alike locked up in a cage. The only thing they had in common was that someone has stolen their faces.

''Come on,'' the Doctor whispered opening the cage and gesturing for his daughter to follow him inside.
''Their all exactly the same,'' She pointed out walking up to one to get a closer look, although it was hard because they were all moving around.

''Have you got a touch?'' the Doctor asked as they both heard the people clench and unclench their hands. Something weird was going on something neither of them could quite understand.

''I might do,'' She replied reaching into her leather jacket to find one. However it seemed they didn't need one as a bright light suddenly came on pointing towards the two.

''Stay where you are,'' The two turned at the sound of the voice. Standing at the entrance of the building were three men.

''Doctor?'' Violet whispered.

''Yeah,'' He replied looking over at her.

''I think we got caught,'' She pointed out as the men came closer to them.

''Nah I think we're good,'' The Doctor replied sarcasm evident in his words. Violet sighed, how were they going to get out of this one?
----------------------------------------------
''Jones, oh Jones please wake up,'' Jones slowly opened his eyes, upon hearing a woman call his name repeatedly.

''Rose?'' He asked as he opened his eyes fully to see her looking worriedly at him.

''Oh thank god your ok,'' She sighed in relief helping him sit up.

''What happened? Ouch my head,'' Jones clutched his head as he stood up, holding on to Rose for support.

''I think you may have got knocked out by one of those me,'' Rose explained as she watched his try to regain his balance.

''What about Violet and the Doctor?'' He asked now fully recovered from being unconscious, well apart from the dull throbbing of a headache that is

''I think they went after them, and seeing as they haven't come back, I think they found where they went,'' Rose explained earning a nod from Jones.

''So what do we do now?'' Jones asked the blonde.

''We do some investigating of our own, you see while you were busy chasing the people who took Tommy's Gran. I saw this type of static electricity coming out of the TV, but it wasn't normal, because it was red,'' Rose explained as she begun to lead Jones down the street.

''So what your saying is we need to pay a little visit to Mr Magpie,'' Jones spoke catching onto what Rose was suggesting.
''Exactly,'' She said with a smile and together they were on their way.

It didn't take them long to reach the shop name Magpies electricals. As they opened the door Jones noticed that all the TV's were on but only showed static, no picture whatsoever.

''Oh, I'm sorry, Miss, Sir . I'm afraid you're too late. I was just about to lock the door,'' Magpie said upon seeing them.

''Yeah? Well, I want to buy a telly,'' Rose said.

''Me too,'' Jones added wandering further into the small shop.

''Come back tomorrow, please,'' Magpie was almost begging them to leave.

''You'll be closed, won't you?'' Rose asked taking a look around the shop.

''What?'' He asked not understanding Rose.

''For the big day?'' Rose questioned again.

''You know the coronation, what you were saying earlier about, Time for a lovely bit of pomp and circumstance,'' Jones said repeating what Magpie had said to them that morning.

''Yes, yes, of course. The big day. I'm sure you'll find somewhere to watch it. Please go,'' Magpie replied trying to shove them back out of the door.

''Seems to me half of London's got a television, since you're practically giving them away,'' Rose said refusing to leave.

''I have my reasons,'' Was all Magpie replied with.

''And what are they?'' Rose asked, just as a women appeared on the screen of one of the TV's.

''Hungry! Hungry!'' The women said looking directly at Rose as she brought her face closer to it.

''What's that?'' She asked.

''Something creepy if you ask me, what's going on here Magpie?'' Jones asked folding his arms, squaring up to magpie, which wasn't partially difficult.

''It's just a television. One of these modern programmes. Now, I really do think you should leave. Right now!'' Magpie attempted to shout, but it came out as more of a stutter.

''Not until you've answered my questions. How comes your televisions are so cheap?'' Rose asked, not listening to Magpie.

''It's my patriotic duty. Seems only right that as many folk as possible get to watch the coronation. We may be losing the Empire but we can still be proud. Twenty million people they reckon'll be watching. Imagine that. And twenty million people can't be wrong, eh, so why don't you get yourself back home and get up, bright and early, for the big day,'' Magpie explained trying to get them to leave again.

''Nah, I'm not leaving till I've seen everything,'' Rose shrugged.

''Neither am I,'' Jones added, taking a look behind one of the TV's, but he saw nothing suspicious.

''I need to close,'' Magpie pleaded.

''Mister Magpie, something's happening out there. Ordinary people are being struck down and changed, and the only new thing in the house is a television. Your television. What's going on?'' Rose had given up on being subtle and told the man the truth as to why she was really there.

''I knew this would happen. I knew I'd be found out,'' Magpie confessed moving away from the door, not before locking it.

''All right, then, it's just you, me and my friend Jones. You going to come clean, then? What's really in it for you?'' Rose asked.

''yeah because even with these low prices your still making quite a bit of money,'' Jones piped up.

''For me? Perhaps some peace,'' He said bowing his head in almost shame.

''From what?'' Rose asked in confusion.

''From her,'' Magpie pointed over at the TV that had a women on it.

''Her,'' Jones repeated, wondering why this man was afraid of a programme on the TV.

''That's just a woman on the telly. That's just a programme,'' Rose was no doubt just as confused as Jones was.

''What a pretty little girl and a handsome man as well,'' The two looked over at the TV startled by what the women just said.

''Oh, my God. Are you talking to us?'' Rose asked putting her face closer to the TV screen.

''Yes I'm talking to you, little one. Unseasonably chilly for the time of year, don't you think?'' The women's words confused Jones, was she talking about the fact that Rose was only wearing a dress.

''What are you?'' Rose asked.

''Yeah because I'm absolutely sure your not human,'' Jones said looking around the back of the TV for the plug. He had a feeling if he unplugged the TV then the women wouldn't harm them.

''I'm the Wire, and I'm hungry!'' He was too late, he just stared as long thin strands of red energy latched onto Rose's face. The suddenly he felt them wrap themselves around his own face.

''Magpie, help Us!'' Rose shouted, knowing he was the only one that could save them now.

''Just think of that audience tomorrow, my dear, all settling down to watch the coronation. Twenty million people. Things will never be the same again. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry,'' Magpie did nothing but stand and watch.

''Rose I have an idea, but I might not be able to help you,'' Jones shouted as he struggled against the energy pulling at not only his face, but his brain as well.

''Just do it and go find the Doctor he'll not what to do,'' Rose shouted back.

Taking a deep breath and consecrating as hard as he could he lifted his foot and stamped it down on one of the wires holding the TV together. He didn't know if it worked because he suddenly felt darkness creep over him before he fell unconscious for the second time that night.

''Start from the beginning. Tell me everything you know.''

Violet and the Doctor found themselves tied to wooden chairs in what appeared to be a separate abandoned building, from the one they had been found in. In front of them stood a man, who was smartly dressed with a black hat on his head. He looked to Violet like a very serious man.

''Well, for starters, I know you can't wrap your hand around your elbow and make your fingers meet,'' The Doctors comment made Violet giggle.

''And I know you love that hat more than your own wife and she knows it as well,'' Violet added nodding up at the hat on his head.

''Don't get clever with me. You were there today at Florizel Street, and now breaking into this establishment. Now you're connected with this. Make no mistake,'' The man said obviously furious at two of his secrets being exposed by two strangers.

''Well, the thing is, Detective Inspector Bishop,'' The Doctor said looking up at the man.

''How do you know my name?'' The Detective asked.

''It's written inside your collar. Bless your mum. But I can't help thinking, Detective Inspector, you're not exactly doing much detective inspecting, are you?'' The Doctor pointed out.

''I'm doing everything in my power,'' The inspector sighed, walking around the table.

''That would be?'' Violet asked.

''Grabbing those faceless people and hiding them as fast as you can. Don't tell me orders from above, hmm? Coronation Day. The eyes of the world are on London Town so any sort of problem just gets swept out of sight,'' The Doctor explained.

''The nation has an Imagine to maintain.''

''That's a extremely lame excuse if I ever heard one,'' Violet comment sending the Inspector a smile, as he glared over at her.

''But doesn't it drive you mad, doing nothing? Don't you want to get out there and investigate?'' Violet knew that it would certainly drive the Doctor mad, well madder than he may all ready be, that is.

''Of course I do. But, with all the crowds expected, we haven't got the man power. Even if we did, this is beyond anything we've ever seen. I just don't know anymore. Twenty years on the force, I don't even know where to start. We haven't the faintest clue what's going on,'' The detective confessed.

''Well, that could change,'' The Doctor simply stated.

''How?'' The inspector asked.

''How about we start from the beginning. Tell us everything you know,'' Violet replied.

''We started finding them about a month ago. Persons left sans visage. Heads just blank,'' He explained once Violet and the Doctor had been untied.

'Is there any sort of pattern?'' The Doctor asked as he and Violet shuffled through odd bits of paper the Detective had given them to look over.

''Yes, spreading out from North London. All over the city. Men, women, kids, grannies. The only real lead is there's been quite a large number in...''

''Florizel Street,'' The Doctor said finishing the sentence for him.

''Found another one, sir,'' Came the voice of one of the men from outside.

'''Oh, er, good man, Crabtree. Here we are, Doctor. Take a good look. See what you can deduce,'' As Crabtree lead the person into the room, Violets heart skipped beat. There was no denying the Pink shoes and skirt; she knew who exactly was under the blanket before Crabtree even took it off.

''Oh please no,'' Violet whispered as she approached what was Rose.

''Rose,'' The Doctor said out loud.

''You know her?'' The inspector asked the both of them.

''Know her? She,'' But he choked on his words, unable to believe she was there.

''A friend, a very good friend,'' Violet said speaking the words she knew her father had tried to say.

''They found her in the street, apparently, over by the central square, abandoned,'' Crabtree explained, backing away from Rose.

''That's unusual. That's the first one out in the open. Heaven help us if something happens in public tomorrow for the big day. We'll have Torchwood on our backs then, make no mistake,'' The detective said shaking his head.

Violet zoned out of the convocation that the Doctor was having with Detective Inspector Bishop and focused on one word that stood out to her as he had spoken. Torchwood, it sounded familiar as if someone had mentioned it before. She racked her brain until she heard the voice of Lily, who had been her maid as it were, back on La armeo de la Universo.

''Never go to earth and if you do beware of Torchwood,'' Violet wished she had asked why.

''Violet, Violet, are you ok?'' The Doctor waving his hand in the front of her face snapped her out of the daze she had been in.

''Right yeah, but Doctor if Rose is here where does that mean Jones is?'' Violet asked and for once she realised that her father didn't have all the answers.

''I promise, wherever his is we'll find him,'' The Doctor assured her and with a smile, that you just knew meant everything would be alright. She took his hand and they ran out in search of answers.

--------------------------------------
The Inspector followed the Time lord and lady back to Tommy's house. Once at the house the Doctor knocked on the door and they all waited patiently for it to open. Violet just hopped to god that Tommy or his mother was the one to answer because she did not want to come across his father again.

''Tommy, talk to me. I need to know exactly what happened inside your house,'' The Doctor sounded almost relieved to see it had been Tommy who had answered. However it was short lived as Tommy's father appeared at the door.

''What the blazes do you think you're doing?'' he said coming out of the house to see, not only Violet and the Doctor but the detective as well.

''I want to help, dad,'' Tommy said.

''Mister Connolly,'' The Doctor begun.

''Shut your face, you, whoever you are. We can handle this ourselves. Listen, you little twerp. You're hardly out of the blooming' cradle, so I don't expect you to understand. But I've got a position to maintain. People round here respect me. It matters what people think,'' Mr Connolly didn't shout, but he didn't need to, he looked beyond angry.

''You can't talk to your son like that,'' Violet hissed backed trying to defend Tommy.

''I can talk to my son however I want, now why don't you stick your nose in somebody elses business,'' He snapped back.

''Is that why you did it, dad?'' Tommy asked after hearing what his dad had said about having a reputation to uphold.

''What do you mean? Did what?'' Violet could tell by his facial expression that Mr Connolly was lying.

''You ratted on Gran. How else would the police know where to look, unless some coward told them,'' Tommy snapped standing up for himself and Violet couldn't help but smile.

''How dare you! Do you think I fought a war just so a mouthy little scum like you could call me a coward?''

''You don't get it, do you? You fought against fascism, remember? People telling you how to live, who you could be friends with, who you could fall in love with, who could live and who had to die. Don't you get it? You were fighting so that little twerps like me could do what we want, say what we want. Now you've become just like them. You've been informing on everyone, haven't you? Even Gran. All to protect your precious reputation,'' Tommy spat at his father.

''Eddie is that true?'' Now Tommy's mother had appeared at the door wondering what was going on.

''I did it for us, Rita. She was filthy. A filthy, disgusting thing!'' Mr Connolly said to his wife.

''She's still a human being,'' Violet spoke up unable to cope with how rude the man was, he did not deserve to have the family he had. Maybe one day he did, but it seemed to Violet that, that day had long since passed.

''She's my mother. All the others you informed on, all the people in our street, our friends,'' She said her voice cracking ever so slightly.

''I had to. I, I did the right thing,'' her husband said defending himself, but not to a good job of it.

''The right thing for us or for you. You go Tommy. Go with the Doctor and Violet, do some good. Get away from this house, its poison. We had a ruddy monster under this roof, all right, but it weren't my mother!'' Rita shouted slamming the door shut as she left.

''Come on Tommy, let's go save your Gran,'' Violet extended her hand out to the boy and he gladly took it. He was happy to finally get away from his father.

''Tommy, tell me about that night. The night she changed,'' The Doctor asked as the now group of four made their way down the street, away from Tommy's house.

''She was just watching the telly,'' he simply replied shrugging his shoulders, as if it didn't mean anything.

''Rose said it. She guessed it straight away. Of course she did. All these aerials in one little street. How come?'' The Doctor asked wishing he had listened to Rose.

''Bloke up the road, Mister Magpie, he's selling them cheap,'' Tommy replied.

''Violet you said that didn't you, about how so many people could afford TV's when it only 1953,'' The Doctor spoke again mentally slapping himself for not paying attention to her and Rose's comments from the beginning.

''Tommy, could you take us to his shop please?'' Violet asked hopping he knew where it was.

''Yeah it's not far,'' With that the group followed Tommy down the road.
----------------------------------------

''It's locked,'' Tommy stated once they'd reached the door of Magpies small shop.

The Doctor ignored his comment and broke in, smashing the glass of the door and turning the handle to allow them all to entire.

''If you're here, come out and talk to me! Magpie!'' The Doctor shouted running over to the counter and repeatedly ringing the bell.

''Maybe he's out,'' Tommy spoke shrugging.

''Looks like it,'' The Doctor agreed. He then walked around the counter and begun opening draws. It wasn't long before a device that seemed to be in the wrong time. A portable TV.

''Oh, hello. This isn't right. This is very much not right. Tastes like iron. Bakelite. Put together with human hands, yes, but the design itself. Oh, beautiful work. That is so simple,'' The Doctor spoke flipping the device around in his hands.

''That's incredible. It's like a television, but portable. A portable television,'' The detective looked at it in awe.

''It's not the only power source in this room,'' The Doctor scanned his sonic over the device, which in turn turned the TV in the room to light up. Violet noticed that each on showed a face of a person, all of them saying 'Help me.'

''Gran?'' Tommy asked as he saw the face of his Gran on the screen near to him.

''I'm on my way,'' Violet heard the Doctor mutter at Rose's face as she shouted 'help me Doctor'

''Where's Jones?'' Violet asked looking at each and every screen, neither of them showed the face of her friend.

''Violet, I think I found him,'' Tommy had called her over to a small area behind a display of TV's. Relief flooded over her as she saw Jones laying unconscious, with his face.

''Tommy help me drag him out please,'' Nodding his head Tommy grabbed one of his arms as Violet and him manoeuvred the Solider from the small space he had managed to get himself into.

''What do you think you're doing?'' Violet and Tommy had just moved Jones into the middle of the shop when Magpie appeared from the store room of shop, demanding to know why they were there.

''I want my friend restored, and I think that's beyond a little backstreet electrician, so tell me, who's really in charge here?'' The Doctor asked after he himself had checked to see if Jones was ok.

''Yoo hoo! I think that must be me. Ooh, this one's smart as paint,'' Violets brows furrowed as one of the screens showed a women who appeared to be speaking to them.

''Is she talking to us?'' The Detective asked not sure if his mind was playing tricks on him or not.

''I think she is,'' Violet spoke as she notice Jones beginning to stir beside her. He was waking up.

''I'm sorry, gentlemen, I'm afraid you've brought this on yourselves. May I introduce you to my new friend,'' Mr Magpie said pointing at the TV screen.

''Jolly nice to meet you.'' The Women greeted smiling. It may have been a friendly smile, but it didn't seem to come across as that.

''Oh my God, it's her, that woman off the telly,'' The Inspector said, taking a step away from the screen.

''No, it's just using her image,'' The Doctor explained.

''What? What are you?'' Tommy stuttered out.

''She called herself the Wire,'' Jones groaned as he tried to sit up. Violet quickly went to kneel down beside him.

''Jones its ok, just don't try to move, I think you might have slight concussion,'' Violet said trying to get him to lay back
down. However, he refused as carried on talking.

''Doctor she took her face, I tried but couldn't save her,'' Jones was on about Rose and it seemed he blamed himself for what happened.

''Jones its fine, you tried,'' The Doctor reassured him before turning back to the wire.

''I will gobble you up, pretty boy. Every last morsel. And when I have feasted, I shall regain the corporeal body, which my fellow kind denied me,'' The wire continued to speak towards the group.

''Good Lord. Colour television!'' The Inspector exclaimed as the black and white TV screens changed so they were suddenly all in colour.

''So your own people tried to stop you?'' The Doctor said wandering closer to the wire.

''They executed me. But I escaped in this form and fled across the stars,'' The Wire nodded in confirmation.

''And now you're trapped in the television,'' The Doctor stated.

''Doctor don't get to close,'' Jones warned.

''Not for much longer,'' The Wire spoke about her not being in the television for not much longer.

''Doctor, is this what got my Gran?'' Tommy asked becoming scared.

''Yes, Tommy. It feeds off the electrical activity of the brain, but it gorges itself like a great overfed pig, taking people's faces, their essences. It stuffs itself,'' The Doctor explained, rather angrily.

''And you let her do it, Magpie,'' The Detective didn't seem very happy either.

''I had to. She allowed me my face. She's promised to release me at the time of manifestation,'' Magpie confessed.

''So your a coward, if you'd said no Magpie we wouldn't be in this mess would be and it would just be you without a face,'' Jones spat.

''And it would such an improvement,'' Violet added.

''What does that mean?'' Tommy asked refereeing to what Magpie had said.

''The appointed time. My crowning glory,'' Wire said proudly.

''Doctor, the coronation!'' The inspector had finally realised what was happening.

''For the first time in history, millions gathered around a television set. But you're not strong enough yet, are you? You can't do it all from here. That's why you need this. You need something more powerful! This will turn a big transmitter into a big receiver,'' The Doctor said holding up the portable TV in his hands.

''What a clever thing you are! But why fret about it? Why not just relax? Kick off your shoes and enjoy the Coronation. Believe me, you'll be glued to the screen,'' The Wire smiled as length of crackling red energy begun to wrap around the Doctor's, Tommy's and the inspector's faces.

''Violet don't look at her, maybe if your not looking she won't hurt you,'' Nodding a Jones theory the both of them turned away from the TV to look away from the Wire.

''Hungry! Hungry! The Wire is hungry! Ah, this one is tasty. Oh, I'll have lashings of him! Delicious!'' Violet squeezed her eyes shut, afraid for not only herself, but everyone in the room.

''Ah! Armed. He's armed and clever. Withdraw! Withdraw!'' She heard the Wire screech before three thuds on the floor told Violet that the wire had let go of the man.

''The box, Magpie! The box!'' The wire shouts. Violets turned around to see the Wire transfer itself into the portable TV.
''Magpie think about what your doing,'' Violet pleaded.

''I'm sorry I have to,'' Before Violet had so much as stood up he had run out. She ran after him to find he was already in his van.

She tried to look at the scene in front of her to find out where Magpie couldn't possibly be going. Then she saw not far away Alexandra Palace.

''Violet,'' She heard the Doctor shout, ''Where's Magpie?''

''It looks like he's heading towards Alexandra Palace,'' Violet said pointing in the direction Magpie had gone in.

''Biggest TV transmitter in North London. Oh, that's why it chose this place. Tommy?'' The Doctor asked turning towards the boy.

''What are you going to do?'' He asked looking up at the Doctor.

''We're going shopping,'' The Doctor replied with a smile.

As quickly as they could the Doctor, Jones, Violet and Tommy were all shuffling through draws looking for anything that could help them.

''Is this what you want?'' Tommy asked holding up a object he had found in one of the draws.

''Perfect! Right, I need one more thing,'' The Doctor said jumping up and giving a bunch of equipment to the people around him, before then running outside.

The group followed him to the Tardis and waited outside until he had found what he wanted.

''Do you two know what's he doing,'' Tommy asked Jones and Violet.

''Nope,'' They said in unison earning a strange look from Tommy. He was going to ask them why they weren't the slightest bit wanting to know what he was doing. However, before he could the Doctor came running back out the Tardis.

''Got it. Let's go,'' The Doctor shouted dashing off again.

----------------------------------------

''Now we just need to find out where he is,'' Jones said once they'd arrived at Alexandra Palace.

''There!'' Tommy shouted pointing up at the where Magpie was, as he climbed up the transmitter.

''Come on!'' The Doctor called speeding off yet again.

''Wait, wait, wait! Where do you think,'' A guard protested as the group approached them. However all the Doctor did was take out his psychic paper and he didn't have to say anything.

''Oh! I'm very sorry, sir. Shouldn't you be at the Coronation?'' The guard asked after reading the paper.

''They're saving me a seat,'' The Doctor shouted back as he continued to run.

''Who did he think you were?'' Tommy asked.

''King of Belgium, apparently,'' The Doctor replied with a smile.

Finally after a lot of running the group entered the control room of the building.

''Keep this switched on. Don't let anyone stop you, Tommy. Everything depends on it. You understand? Violet you stay in here as well in case someone comes, oh and only use that gun if you need to,'' The Doctor explained.

''How did you know I had it?'' Violet asked as she helped Tommy to set up the equipment.

''To be honest I didn't, I just guessed, now come on Jones,'' The Doctor shrugged his shoulders as he spoke.

''Wait, where are we going?'' Jones asked, having a feeling he already knew the answer.

''To stop magpie of course,'' The Doctor replied simply.

''I am not climbing up there,'' Jones protested as he noticed Magpie was already very high up.

''Oh no, I'm going up there you stay and hold this,'' Jones sighed in relief when the Doctor handed him some rope.
Bang, Violet and Tommy were startled by the valves being blown.

''Tommy, do we have any more of those Valves?'' Violet asked removing the one that had just blown.

''Yeah, here,'' Tommy had managed to find a spare and handed it over to Violet.

''Thanks,'' She said as she screwed it back into place, hoping the plan would still work.

Meanwhile, form he position on the ground Jones stood wide eyed as the red energy that had been all over the tower just disappeared. He smiled the Doctor had done it, but did that mean everyone got their faces back?

''Come on Jones let's get back to the others,'' The Doctor said to the solider once he had climbed back down the mast.

''What have I missed?'' Violets face lit up upon seeing her father alive and Jones of course.

''Doctor! What happened?'' Tommy asked as Violet moved to hug Jones.

''Sorted. Electrical creature, TV technology, clever alien life form. That's me by the way. I turned the receiver back into a transmitter and I trapped the Wire in here,'' The Doctor grinned as he waved  around a Video tape.

''I just invented the home video thirty years early. Beta max. Oh, look. God save the Queen, eh?'' The Doctor said looking over at the TV to Queen Elizabeth 2nd waving on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

''God Save the Queen,'' Jones repeated, but he wasn't looking at the TV when he said it, instead he was looking over at Violet.

''Doctor shouldn't we go and see if Rose is ok as well as Tommy's Gran,'' Violet suggested.

''Yes, yes we should,'' And yet again the group ran out, hoping that every had their faces back.

Once they reached where the people were being held. Violet sighed in relief everyone seemed to have their faces back. She watched with a smile on her face as Tommy went to hug his Gran. Her smile then grew once she saw Rose and after the Doctor had given her an hug, her and Jones pulled her in for a group hug.

''I'm glad your ok,'' Violet whispered, while in the hug.

''I'm glad as well,'' Rose said as she pulled away. Everything was back to normal again.

------------------------------------------

''We could go down the Mall, join in with the crowds,'' Rose suggested as her and the Doctor stood together back in Florizel Street.

''Nah, that's just pomp and circumstance. This is history right here,'' The Doctor said watching as people celebrated and danced.

''The domestic approach,'' Rose sated as she watched Violet and Jones.

''Exactly,'' The Doctor muttered as he watched Violet and Jones dance.

''Will it, that thing, is it trapped for good on video?'' Rose asked drawing attention away from the two.

''Hope so. Just to be on the safe side though, I'll use my unrivalled knowledge of transtemporal extirpation methods to neutralise the residual electronic pattern,'' The Doctor explained.

''You what?'' Rose asked confused.

''I'm going to tape over it,'' The Doctor said simply.

''Just leave it to me. I'm always doing that,'' Rose said with a laugh.

------------------------------------

''Never knew you two were into dancing,'' The Doctor commented as he reached Violet and Jones, he had left Rose talking to Tommy.

''I was knocked out twice today Doctor, I think I deserve a dance,'' Jones replied as he and Violet carried on.

''Plus we're blending in, taking the domestic approach to things,'' Violet said.

''You heard me didn't you?'' The nod from the both of them was enough for them to start laughing. When Rose approached she was very confused.

''What's so funny?'' She asked looking between the three laughing people in front of her.

''Don't worry, anyway it's about time we go, come on,'' The Doctor begun to walk off back to the Tardis. Violet and Jones both hoped that next time there would be a lot less running, but with the Doctor, who knew.

The Impossible Planet is next
