Army of ghosts
‘’Planet Earth. This is where I was born. And this is where I died. For the first nineteen years of my life, nothing happened. Nothing at all. Not ever. And then I met a man called the Doctor. Then I met his daughter, Violet and her friend Commander Michael Jones,’’ Rose Tyler walked along the beach alone, hair blonde hair blow wildly around her face.
‘’A man who could change his face. And he took me away from home in his magical machine. He showed me the whole of time and space. I thought it would never end. That's what I thought. But then came the army of ghosts. Then came Torchwood and the War. And that's when it all ended. This is the story of how I died,’’ As Rose stood on the rock a hand came to rest on her shoulder. She turned and hugged them, tears falling down her cheeks.
‘’I have to go now,’’ They spoke and Rose looked up at them, a pleading look in her eyes.
‘’No, please don’t.’’
‘’I’m sorry, I don’t belong here, goodbye Rose,’’ The figure begun to fade and Rose cried harder.
‘’Neither do I,’’ Rose shouted. The fading ghost of a figure parted there now see through lips and said.
‘’You do, this was always how it was supposed to end and I’m so sorry Rose,’’ The figure faded leaving Rose once again alone on the beach, wind howled around her. The waves crashed against the rocks beside her, there was no sign that Violet had been stood with her at all.
--------------------------------------------------
‘’Ok, so this is a quick stop, say hello to your mum. Then I’m taking you to back home for a day, before then flying off again. Sound like a plan,’’ There were collective nods as the Doctor landed the Tardis on earth. Violet and Jones were finally going to get a chance to meet Rose’s mother.
Stepping out of the Tardis, Violet found they had landed in a playground. That wasn’t odd to Violet, but the fact that it was empty confused her, where were the children. Not bothering to ask she followed the Doctor and Rose towards a block of flats.
‘’’Mum, it's us! We're back!’’ Rose called as soon as the group arrived in the flat.
‘’Oh, I don't know why you bother with that phone. You never use it!’’ Violet smiled as a woman, who had the same colour hair as Rose, stepped out from what Violet saw was the kitchen.
‘’Shut up, come here!’’ Rose teased, beckoning her mother over for a hug.
‘’Oh, I love you!’’ Rose’s mum replied.
‘’I love you!’’ Rose responded and Violet couldn’t help but smile.
‘’I love you so much!’’ Eventually Rose’s mum pulled away from the hug, a big smile on her face.
‘’Oh no, you don't. Come here!’’ Violet laughed along with Rose as her mum moved to hug the Doctor, as he tried to sneak past.
‘’Oh, you lovely big fella! Oh, you're all mine,’’ She exclaimed as she picked him up.
‘’Just, just, just put me down!’’ The Doctor’s voice shook a little. Violet and Jones continued to laugh, but stopped when Rose’s mum’s eyes landed on them.
‘’Who are you two?’’ She asked looking them up and down.
‘’Mum, this is Violet and that’s Jones,’’ Rose pointed out; gesturing to each of them once she’d said their names.
‘’Guys this is my mum Jackie,’’ Rose finished introducing and for a minuet there was a small silence.
‘’So what planet are you two from them because knowing Rose your not human,’’ Jackie said, a little smile on her face.
‘’I’m originally from Chumeria,’’ Jones replied holding his hand out for Jackie to shake, but instead she pulled him into a hug.
‘’And what about you then?’’ Jackie asked Violet once she’d released Jones from her bone crushing hug.
‘’I’m a...’’ But the word Time Lady never came out of her mouth because she saw something, something that was going to happen in the near future and it caused her throat to dry up.
‘’Sorry,’’ Violet bolted out of the flat, not a single one of those left in the room knew the double meaning behind her words.
‘’Violet,’’ The Doctor called moving to go after his daughter. However, Jones put his arm out and stopped him. Of all the people in the room Jones had a least one idea of what may have happened.
‘’Did I scare her or something?’’ Jackie asked looking at each of them in turn.
‘’I don’t know, she’s never done that before,’’ Jones replied, catching the glance the Doctor gave him, that said ‘you know don’t you.’
‘’I've got loads of washing for you. And I got you this,’’ As Rose changed the subject Jones managed to sneak around the Doctor and out of the room. Just because he stopped the Doctor from going after her doesn’t mean he couldn’t.
‘’Do you want to tell me what just happened, because Jackie thinks she scared you off or something?’’ Jones asked as he met Violet at the steps leading into the main building.
‘’I hate the universe, I hate the Time Lords and I curse the dammed Untempered Schism,’’ Violet shouted up at the sky, before dropping her head down to rest on her elbows.
‘’I had hoped it wasn’t that, but you saw something didn’t you?’’ He asked, moving to sit down next to her.
‘’Yeah, I want to stop it Jones and I know it’s reckless, but we need to take the Tardis and stop one thing from happening. Just one thing,’’ She explained moving her head to look at him.
‘’What would that be?’’ He asked, not liking the idea of stealing the Tardis.
‘’Stop Torchwood from ever forming,’’ She stated.
‘’Torchwood, Torchwood. Wait hang on don’t we keep hearing that name, like it’s following us. It’s weird kind of like that time the word Bad wolf decided to pop up on that satellite we visited,’’ Jones said.
‘’Bad wolf, it’s funny because Lily said I’ll meet the big bad wolf and when I do, they won’t be big, bad or scary in anyway.’’ Violet responded with a smile, ‘’ it’s weird to think that when the Doctor takes us back, no time would have passed for them,’’ She continued, totally forgetting the idea of taking the Tardis.
‘’What the hell are they,’’ Jones suddenly shouted yanking Violet from her daze. She looked in awe as strange shadowed, ghost like figures wandered around in front of them.
They two had walked over to the figures confusion evident on their faces. They had no idea what they were or where’d they’d come from.
‘’They're everywhere!’’ Violet jumped at the sound of her father’s voice coming from behind them.
‘’Doctor, look out!’’ Violet’s mouth opened in shock as the figure walked right through her dad.
‘’They haven't got long. Midday shift only lasts a couple of minutes. They're about to fade,’’ Violet’s eyebrows furrowed did Jackie just say they had shifts.
‘’What do you mean, shift? Since when did ghosts have shifts? Since when did shifts have ghosts? What's going on?’’ The Doctor looked around himself spinning in circles, he was certainly confused.
‘’Oh, he's not happy when I know more than him, is he?’’ Jackie said and Violet swore a little smile was trying to break through.
‘’But no one's running or screaming or freaking out,’’ The Doctor said. Sure enough as Violet looked around she saw people going about their normal day to day lives.
‘’Why should we? Here we go. Twelve minutes past,’’ Just after Jackie spoke the figures begun to disappear all at once.
‘’By the way I’m a Time Lady, if you know, still interested,’’ Violet commented, ‘’and sorry for earlier, I just got a little worried. Sorry.’’ Jackie just smiled and grabbed Violet by the arm.
‘’How about a nice cup of tea, it will help settle your nerves,’’ With that said the group where led inside, Jackie in front pulling Violet along by the arm.
-------------------------------------------------------------
‘’On today's Ghostwatch, claims that some of the ghosts are starting to talk, and there seems to be a regular formation gathering around Westminster Bridge. It's almost like a military display.’’
Jackie had made Violet a cup of tea first, before making the others some. So while she was in the kitchen the Doctor was flicking through the TV, finding near enough each show as ‘ghost related.’
‘’What the hell's going on?’’ The Doctor exclaimed as he pushed a button on the remote to change the channel.
‘’And tonight we're expecting very strong ghosts from London, through the North and up into Scotland,’’ Jones couldn’t help chuckle at the fact a weather man was predicting ghosts not the actual weather. Whereas the Doctor sighed changing the channel again.
‘’So basically, Eileen, what you're telling me is, that you are in love with a ghost.’’
‘’He's my ghost, and I love him twenty four seven,’’ The Woman Eileen responded. Violet however, rolled her eyes and sipped her tea. The Doctor changed the channel twice more and an advert came on.
‘’My ghost was pale and grey until I discovered Ectoshine!’’
‘’You gave got to be kidding me,’’ Jones groaned at how stupid and predictable humans could be.
‘’It's all over the world,’’ The Doctor exclaimed as Eastenders came on.
‘’Listen to me, Den Watts. I don't care if you have come back from the grave. Get out of my pub! The only spirits I'm serving in this place are gin, whisky and vodka. So, you heard me. Get out!’’ Violet rolled her eyes as the woman shouted at the ‘ghost.’
‘’When did it start?’’ The Doctor asked giving up and turning the TV off, as Jackie returned bearing more mugs of tea for everyone.
‘’Well, first of all, Peggy heard this noise in the cellar, so she goes down...’’ Jackie begins, but is cut off by the Doctor.
‘’No, I mean worldwide.’’
‘’Oh. That was about two months ago. Just happened. Woke up one morning, and there they all were. Ghosts, everywhere.
We all ran round screaming and that. Whole planet was panicking. No sign of you, thank you very much. Then it sort of sank in. It took us time to realise that we're lucky,’’ Jackie explained.
‘’What makes you think it's granddad?’’ Rose asked, as Violet and Jones looked at each other confused.
‘’It just feels like him. There's that smell, those old cigarettes. Can't you smell it?’’ She asked looking at her daughter.
‘’I wish I could, mum, but I can't,’’ Rose replied honestly.
‘’You've got to make an effort. You've got to want it, sweetheart,’’ Jackie added almost begging Rose to smell what she could.
‘’The more you want it, the stronger it gets,’’ The Doctor suggested.
‘’Sort of, yeah,’’ Jackie shrugged taking a sip of her own tea.
‘’Like a psychic link. Of course you want your old dad to be alive, but you're wishing him into existence. The ghosts are using that to pull themselves in,’’ The Doctor explained.
‘’You're spoiling it,’’ Jackie almost shouted and Violet could tell, Jackie desperately wanted it to be her dad.
‘’I'm sorry, Jackie, but there's no smell, there's no cigarettes. Just a memory,’’ The Doctor responded his becoming soft.
‘’But if they're not ghosts, what are they then?’’ Rose asked.
‘’Yeah, but they're human! You can see them. They look human,’’ Jackie added.
‘’She's got a point. I mean, they're all sort of blurred, but they're definitely people,’’ Rose said.
‘’Doesn’t mean their human or even people Rose. Just think for a minute they looked as if they were trying to push through onto earth into this world. They could be anyone or anything. I’m also willing to bet that each time these ‘shifts’ happen, it’s making them stronger and getting them closer to breaking through,’’ Violet suggested and the Doctor looked over at her impressed.
‘’They're pressing themselves into the surface of the world. But a footprint doesn't look like a boot,’’ The Doctor finished for her.
‘’Here, lay these out in a right angle triangle, would you please Violet,’’ Nodding her head Violet took the three cones from the Doctor, laying them on the grass, while Jones connected wires to them.
‘’When's the next shift?’’ The Doctor asked Jackie.
‘’Quarter to. But don't go causing trouble. What's that lot do?’’ She asked as Jones and Violet fiddled around with the equipment the Doctor had brought out.
‘’Triangulates their point of origin,’’ The Doctor replied.
‘’I don't suppose it's the Gelth?’’ Rose asked.
‘’Nah. They were just coming through one little rift. This lot are transposing themselves over the whole planet. Like tracing paper,’’ The explained as he made sure all the cones were where he wanted them.
‘’You're always doing this. Reducing it to science. Why can't it be real? Just think of it, though. All the people we've lost. Our families coming back home. Don't you think it's beautiful?’’ Jackie protested.
‘’I think it's horrific. Rose, give us a hand,’’ The Doctor replied.
‘’Don’t listen to him Jackie, sometimes he forgets that humans get emotional and have feels,’’ Violet said trying to reassure the woman, before they followed the Doctor inside the Tardis.
----------------------------------
As soon as she entered the Tardis Violet went straight to her room. She knew that nobody would really mind if she was gone for a few minutes. Once in her room, she went over to her wardrobe and pulled out a box inside sat a vortex manipulator. She stared at it, but she just couldn’t bring herself to use it, not yet anyway. So instead she put the lid back on a retuned back to the main console room to realise they were moving somewhere.
‘’I like that. Allons y. I should say allons y more often. Allons y. Watch out, Rose Tyler. Allons y. And then, it would be really brilliant if I met someone called Alonso, because then I could say, allons y, Alonso, every time. You're staring at me,’’ The Doctor sated as he finished his rambeling. Just like Violet had thought nobody had noticed she was gone.
‘’My mum's still on board,’’ Rose stated.
‘’If we end up on Mars, I'm going to kill you,’’ Violet looked up to realise Jackie had managed to climb and sit near the roof of the Tardis.
‘’Oh well there goes the advantage of surprise. Still, cuts to the chase. Stay in here, look after Jackie, Violet you coming?’’ The Doctor asked turning towards his daughter.
‘’If your offering I guess so,’’ Violet replied, walking over to join the Doctor at the door.
‘’I'm not looking after my mum,’’ Rose protested.
‘’Well, you brought her,’’ The Doctor pointed out.
‘’I was kidnapped!’’ Jackie whisper shouted.
‘’Doctor, they've got guns,’’ Rose said.
‘’And I haven't. Which makes me the better person, don't you think? They can shoot me dead, but the moral high ground is mine,’’ The Doctor stated.
‘’Pulse when you first met me and Jones guns where pointed at you,’’ Violet commented before following the Doctor out of the door.
The moment Violet and the Doctor stepped out of the Tardis, they were met by a woman running in. She stopped in front of them a smile rising on her face.
‘’Oh! Oh, how marvellous. Oh, very good. Superb. Happy day,’’ Violet becomes confused as she starts to clap, the armed men joining in as well.
‘’Er, thanks. Nice to meet you. I'm the Doctor and this is Violet,’’ He said gesturing towards Violet she gave a little.
‘’Oh, I should say. Hurray!’’ The woman said her smile never leaving her face.
‘’You, you've heard of us, then?’’ The Doctor asked.
‘’Well of course we have. And I have to say, if it wasn't for you, none of us would be here. The Doctor and the Tardis,’’ She said enthusiastically as applause rung around the small storage room yet again.
‘’And you are?’’ The Doctor asked.
‘’Oh, plenty of time for that. But according to the records, you're not one for travelling alone. The Doctor and his companion. That's a pattern, isn't it, right? There's no point hiding anything. Not from us. So where is she?’’ The woman said and Violet was a little confused surely she would have thought she was his companion.
‘’How do you know it’s not me?’’ Violet piped up and the woman turned her head to look at her.
‘’Because you are his daughter. So come on where’s this companion of yours,’’ She says again a little more demanding than before.
‘’Yes. Sorry. Good point. She's just a bit shy, that's all,’’ The Doctor replied reaching behind him and into the Tardis. He grabbed the first person he could get a hold of. This meant when he pulled out Jackie, she had to hols back her surprised expression.
‘’But here she is, Rose Tyler,’’ The Doctor looked shocked as he realised Jackie was stood next to him. ‘’Hmm. She's not the best I've ever had. Bit too blonde. Not too steady on her pins. A lot of that, and just last week, she stared into the heart of the Time Vortex and aged fifty seven years. But she'll do.’’ Violet had to cover her mouth to stop the laughter threatening to leave her lips.
‘’I'm forty,’’ Jackie spoke defending herself feeling a little insulted at the Doctors words.
‘’Deluded. Bless. I'll have to trade her in. Do you need anyone? She's very good at tea. Well, I say very good, I mean not bad. Well, I say not bad. Anyway, lead on. Allons y. But not too fast. Her ankle's going,’’ This time a small giggle left Violets mouth causing Jackie to turn and glare at her.
‘’I'll show you where my ankle's going,’’ Jackie then said, the threat was for both of them.
------------------------------------------------
‘’ It was only a matter of time until you found us, and at last you've made it. I'd like to welcome you, Doctor and your daughter. Welcome to Torchwood,’’ Violet’s breath hitched she couldn’t believe it she was inside Torchwood and it was only then she realised the plan she had tried to make with Jones.
‘Stop Torchwood from ever forming,’ well it seemed that that plan was never going to happen.
‘’That's a Jathar Sunglider,’’ The Doctor exclaimed pointing over at something, but Violet was listening she was too busy in her thoughts to notice.
‘’Came down to Earth off the Shetland Islands ten years ago,’’ The woman explained and for some reason her voice managed to pull Violet out of her thoughts.
‘’What, did it crash?’’ The Doctor asked realising that it shouldn’t have been anywhere near the Earth.
‘’No, we shot it down. It violated our airspace. Then we stripped it bare. The weapon that destroyed the Sycorax on Christmas Day? That was us. Now, if you'd like to come with me. The Torchwood Institute has a motto. If it's alien, it's ours. Anything that comes from the sky, we strip it down and we use it for the good of the British Empire,’’ She explained and Violets eyes widened.
‘’For the good of the what?’’ Jackie questioned beating Violet, although Violet didn’t want to ask a question.
‘’The British Empire,’’ The woman repeated her smile stayed glued on her face and Violet really wanted to hit her.
‘’There isn't a British Empire,’’ Violet nodded, she may not know much about the Earth, but she knew quite a few key moments in history and she knew that the British Empire didn’t exist anymore. She also knew there wouldn’t be another one anytime soon.
‘’Not yet. Ah, excuse me. Now, if you wouldn't mind,’’ The woman smiled again a solider handed her a gun that was a lot bigger than her and Violet wondered how she was able to carry it.
‘’Do you recognise this, Doctor?’’ She asked.
‘’That's a particle gun,’’ The Doctor answered straight away.
‘’Good, isn't it? Took us eight years to get it to work,’’ She explained.
‘’It's the twenty first century. You can't have particle guns,’’ Violet looked over at her father and noticed he didn’t look very happy.
‘’We must defend our border against the alien. Thank you, Sebastian, isn't it?’’ She finished by giving the gun back to the soldier who had given it to her.
‘’Yes, Ma'am,’’ He replied before walking off the gun in his arms.
‘’Thank you, Sebastian. I think it's very important to know everyone by name. Torchwood is a very modern organisation. People skills. That's what it's all about these days. I'm a people person.’’
‘’Oh are you really,’’ Violet muttered, unfortunately the woman heard her.
‘’Yes I like to think so.’’
‘’Have you got anyone called Alonso?’’ The Doctor butted in sensing an argument may occur at any second.
‘’No, I don't think so. Is that important?’’ She questioned turning away from Violet and back to him again.
‘’No, I suppose not. What was your name?’’ He asked instead.
‘’Yvonne. Yvonne Hartman,’’ As she said her name the Doctor walked around her going to pick up a metal stool that had a handle on the top of it.
‘’Ah, yes. Now, we're rather fond of these. The Magnaclamp. Found in a spaceship buried at the base of Mount Snowdon. Attach this to an object and it cancels the mass. I could use it to lift two tonnes of weight with a single hand. That's an imperial ton, by the way. Torchwood refuses to go metric,’’ Yvonne explained.
‘’So you’ve basically gone American then,’’ Violet commented and Yvonne just glared at her.
‘’I could do with that to carry the shopping,’’ Jackie sated and judging by her tone she wasn’t joking.
‘’All these devices are for Torchwood's benefit, not the general public's.’’
‘’So, what about these ghosts?’’ The Doctor asked changing the subject.
‘’Ah yes, the ghosts. They're er what you might call a side effect,’’ Violet raised an eyebrow in confusion.
‘’How can you have a side effect of ghosts,’’ Violet sated.
‘’All in good time ma’am. There is an itinerary, trust me,’’ Yvonne replied.
‘’I have a feeling you don’t know what my name is,’’ Violet said moving to stand in front of Yvonne.
‘’I do, but I was told to not call you by it,’’ She replied.
‘’Well you can call me by my name and it’s Violet just in case your just using some stupid excuse.’’
‘’I was not using an excuse,’’ She defended.
‘’Oi! Where are you taking that?’’ Violet looked up at Jackie’s sudden outburst to see the Tardis being driven on the back of a truck.
‘’If it's alien, it's ours,’’ Yvonne simply said.
‘’Wow that’s like me saying if it’s an army it’s mine,’’ Violet snorted.
‘’Yes and both statements would be true, wouldn’t they,’’ Violet was stunned by how much Yvonne claimed she knew.
‘’You know I had hopped you were just a pretty face, but your not are you and that’s very frustrating,’’ Violet snapped out.
-------------------------------------------------
‘’What are we going to do?’’ Jones asked as they both felt the Tardis being lifted up off the floor onto what he guessed was a truck of some kind.
‘’I don’t know,’’ Rose said truthfully as she moved towards the door and looked out.
‘’See anything,’’ Jones asked as he sat down on the beige seat.
‘’I saw the Doctor, my mum and Violet,’’ She replied as she took a hold of the Doctors brown coat and begun to look through it.
‘’Psychic paper, psychic paper,’’ She mumbled.
‘’Looking for this,’’ Jones piped up holding a black card holder up to Rose.
‘’Where’d you find that?’’ She asked as she pulled the same object out of the Doctor’s coat.
‘’Snap. Violet has one too,’’ He explained with a grin on his face.
---------------------------------------
‘’All those times I've been on Earth, I've never heard of you,’’ The Doctor said speaking to Yvonne as they all walked down a corridor.
‘’But of course not. You're the enemy. You're actually named in the Torchwood Foundation Charter of 1879 as an enemy of the Crown,’’ Yvonne replied.
‘’1879. That was called Torchwood, that house in Scotland,’’ The Doctor said realisation hitting him.
‘’’That's right. Where you encountered Queen Victoria and the werewolf.’’
‘’I didn’t how come you know who I am?’’ Violet asked, but her questioned was ignored.
‘’I think he makes half of it up,’’ Jackie piped up. However, like Violets comment it was completely ignored.
‘’Her Majesty created the Torchwood Institute with the express intention of keeping Britain great, and fighting the alien horde,’’ Yvonne continued to explain.
‘’But if I'm the enemy, does that mean that I'm a prisoner?’’ The Doctor replied.
‘’Oh yes. But we'll make you perfectly comfortable. And there is so much you can teach us. Starting with this,’’ She opened the door which led into some kind of laboratory.
‘’Um, since I’m guessing you know a fare bit about me, you should know you can’t keep me prisoner here,’’ Violet said walking beside Yvonne as they walked further into the room.
‘’Oh I know, someone will come to pick you up soon enough,’’ She whispered back before then turning back to the Doctor once again.
‘’Now, what do you make of that?’’ She said pointing up at the large golden sphere that hung in the air.
‘’You must be the Doctor. Rajesh Singh. It's an honour, sir,’’ The scientist held his hand out, but the Doctor walked past muttering.
‘’Yeah,’’ As he did.
‘’What is that thing?’’ Jackie asked craning her neck to look up at the sphere.
‘’We got no idea,’’ Yvonne replied.
‘’Oh finally something you don’t know about,’’ Violet said in a board tone as she went to stand under the object looking up at it.
‘’But what's wrong with it?’’ Jackie asked.
‘’What makes you think there's something wrong with it?’’ Rajesh said looking over at Jackie.
‘’Because it feels weird, do you know why?’’ Violet asked looking over at Yvonne and Rajesh.
‘’Well, the sphere has that effect on everyone. Makes you want to run and hide, like it's forbidden,’’ Yvonne replied.
‘’So the answer to my question was no,’’ Violet mumbled as she continued to look up at the sphere above her.
‘’We tried analysing it using every device imaginable,’’ Rajesh added as the Doctor reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a pair of 3D glasses and putting them on.
‘’But according to our instruments, the sphere doesn't exist. It weighs nothing, it doesn't age. No heat, no radiation, and has no atomic mass,’’ Rajesh continued to explain.
‘’But I can see it,’’ Jackie said.
‘’Fascinating, isn't it? It upsets people because it gives off nothing. It is absent,’’ Rajesh explained as Violet removed herself from standing under the object and stood in front of it instead.
‘’Well, Doctor?’’ Yvonne asked hopping he had an answer.
‘’This is a Void Ship,’’ The Doctor stated as he took his glasses off putting them away.
‘’And what is that?’’ She asked and Violet smirked. It turned the woman who thought she knew everything really only knew the things she was told.
‘’Well, it's impossible for starters. I always thought it was just a theory, but it's a vessel designed to exist outside time and space, travelling through the Void,’’ The Doctor explained.
‘’And what's the Void?’’ Rajesh asked.
‘’The space between dimensions. There's all sorts of realities around us, different dimensions, billions of parallel universes all stacked up against each other. The Void is the space in between, containing absolutely nothing. Imagine that. Nothing. No light, no dark, no up, no down, no life, no time. Without end. My people called it the Void. The Eternals call it the Howling. But some people call it Hell.’’
‘’But someone built the sphere. What for? Why go there?’’ The scientist asked again.
‘’To explore? To escape? You could sit inside that thing and eternity would pass you by. The Big Bang, end of the Universe, start of the next, wouldn't even touch the sides. You'd exist outside the whole of creation,’’ The Doctor explained.
‘’Or it could be a prison, anything could be inside of it and it may have been forced into the void deemed to spend eternity trapped, but somehow it managed to get out or this could have always been its final destination,’’ Violet added.
‘’You see, we were right. There is something inside it,’’ Yvonne said a little too excited for Violet’s liking.
‘’Oh, yes,’’ The Doctor said with a small smile of his own.
‘’So how do we get in there?’’ Rajesh asked.
‘’We don't! We send that thing back into Hell. How did it get here in the first place?’’ The Doctor said.
‘’Well, that's how it all started. The sphere came through into this world, and the ghosts followed in its wake,’’ Yvonne replied.
‘’Finally you have some useful information,’’ Violet said as she walked over to stand next to her father.
‘’Show us,’’ The Doctor added and both Time Lords left the leaving the room and turning left.
‘’No, Doctor, Violet,’’ Yvonne called after them and within moments father and daughter turned around and begun to walk the right way.
‘’Come on Jones,’’ Rose had poked her head out of the Tardis to check if the coast was clear, and fortunately it was.
Quickly the solider followed her and was a little surprised to see that a lab coat was left on a bench. He watched Rose take it and put it on with a smile.
‘’Now all we need is to find you a disguise....’’ Rose’s words trailed off as Jones held an unconscious guard in his arms.
‘’You go. I’ll get changed, stuff this guy in that mummy case. As long as you where this I’ll be able to find you,’’ While Jones spoke he handed Rose a bracelet and bundled the unconscious man into the Tardis.
‘’Aren’t Mummy cases normally cursed or something?’’ Rose questioned.
‘’Yeah, but only if there real, that’s just a prop,’’ Jones explained.
‘’Are you sure,’’ She added.
‘’I’ll be fine Rose, just go I’ll find you,’’ With that he shut the door and begun to changed, while he did that Rose walked of not really sure where she was going.
----------------------------------------
‘’The sphere came through here. A hole in the world. Not active at the moment, but when we fire particle engines at that exact spot, the breech opens up,’’ Yvonne explained as Violet and the Doctor entered her office. Also as she spoke she pointed at a big white wall.
‘’How did you even find it? The Doctor asked as he walked up to the wall Violet next to him.
‘’We were getting warning signs for years. A radar black spot. So we built this place, Torchwood Tower. The breech was six hundred foot above sea level. It was on the only way to reach it,’’ Yvonne explained.
‘’You built a skyscraper just to reach a spatial disturbance? How much money have you got?’’ The Doctor asked looking at her surprised.
‘’Enough,’’ She replied.
Violet snorted at her respond, ’’it sounds like you have more money than sense.’’
‘’Hold on a minute. We're in Canary Wharf. Must be. This building, its Canary Wharf,’’ Jackie exclaimed as she looked out the window that covered one side of the room.
‘’Well, that is the public name for it. But to those in the know, it's Torchwood,’’ Yvonne commented.
‘’So, you find the breach, probe it, the sphere comes through six hundred feet above London, bam. It leaves a hole in the fabric of reality. And that hole, you think, oh, shall we leave it alone? Shall we back off? Shall we play it safe? Nah, you think let's make it bigger!’’ The Doctor said and Violet noticed a little hint of anger rising in his voice.
‘’It's a massive source of energy. If we can harness that power, we need never depend on the Middle East again. Britain will become truly independent. Look, you can see for yourself. Next Ghost Shift's in two minutes,’’ Yvonne replied.
‘’I take back what I said about you, your not clever at all are you. You’re just a pretty face and a stupid one at that,’’ Violet snapped.
‘’Cancel it,’’ The Doctor butted in before Yvonne could reply to Violets insult.
‘’I don't think so.’’
‘’I'm warning you, cancel it,’’ The Doctor repeated.
‘’Oh, exactly as the legends would have it. The Doctor, lording it over us. Assuming alien authority over the Rights of Man,’’ Yvonne replied mocking the Time Lord.
‘’Let me show you. Sphere comes through,’’ The Doctor walked over to a glass panel and points his screwdriver at it until small cracks appeared in it.
‘’But when it made the hole, it cracked the world around it. The entire surface of this dimension splintered. And that's how the ghosts get through. That's how they get everywhere. They're bleeding through the fault lines. Walking from their world, across the Void, and into yours, with the human race hoping and wishing and helping them along. But too many ghosts, and,’’ He moves to tap the glass it falls the floor shattering into pieces.
‘’Well, in that case we'll have to be more careful. Positions! Ghost Shift in one minute,’’ Yvonne shouts.
‘’Miss Hartman, I am asking you, please don't do it,’’ The Doctor said beginning to plead with the stubborn woman in front of him.
‘’We have done this a thousand times,’’ Yvonne said.
‘’Then stop at a thousand!’’ The Doctor shouted.
‘’We're in control of the ghosts. The levers can open the breach, but equally they can close it.
She explained.
‘’What happens if they break, what happens if those ghosts come through. I very must doubt it will be Casper the friendly ghost, it will probably Casper the not so friendly ghosts and his extremely unfriendly friends. But hey let her do what she wants, don’t stop it,’’ Violet added and as she spoke the Doctor went to fetch a chair for himself, sat down on it right in front of Yvonne and Violet.
‘’Sorry?’’ Yvonne asked slightly confused at the Time Lords actions, one moment they were begging her to stop; now they didn’t care.
‘’ Never mind, like Violet said, don’t stop,’’ The Doctor replied a smile forming on his face.
‘’What, is that it?’’ Violet smirked as the woman begun to get very confused with what was happening.
‘’No, fair enough, said my bit. Violets said hers,’’ He looked over at his daughter and she nodded in confirmation, ‘’don't mind us. Any chance of a cup of tea?’’ He asked looking around as he begun to swing on his chair.
‘’Ghost Shift in twenty seconds,’’ A woman behind one of the desks remarked.
‘’Mmm, can't wait to see it,’’ The Doctor commented.
‘’Me neither, its’ going to be quite something,’’ Violet added not even bothering to hide the grin on her face.
‘’You can't stop us, Doctor,’’ She then turned to look at Violet, ‘’nor can you,’’ She added.
‘’No, absolutely not. Pull up a chair, Rose. Come and watch the fireworks,’’ He said looking over at Jackie.
‘’ Ghost Shift in ten seconds. Nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two...’’ However, Yvonne cut the woman off.
‘’ Stop the shift. I said stop.’’
‘’Thank you,’’ The Doctor said sincerely standing up from his seat.
‘’I suppose it makes sense to get as much intelligence as possible. But the programme will recommence, as soon as you've explained everything,’’ Yvonne said and she sounded serious.
‘’I'm glad to be of help,’’ The Doctor said.
‘’I still think your stupid, but I’ll also help,’’ Violet added.
‘’And someone clear up this glass. They did warn me, Doctor. They said you like to make a mess,’’ Yvonne spoke before walking away.
------------------------------
‘’Rose,’’ Rose jumped as Jones fell into step next to the blonde.
‘’You scared me Jones,’’ She said once she’d recovered from the shock.
‘’Sorry, told you I’d find you. Anyway where are we going?’’ He asked and Rose was about to say how good he was at being a soldier, when she remembered he was actually one.
‘’Look at where they’re going,’’ Rose points and follows a man as he entered a room with a sign that read: Torchwood Institute, Reception, Lever Room, Maintenance.
‘’These better work,’’ Jones says as he pulls Violet’s psychic paper then. One after the other they put them against the entry reader and it allows them in.
Once inside they are both transfixed by the sphere.
‘’Can I help you?’’ He asked the question towards Rose and dismissed Jones completely.
‘’I was just...’’ But her words got lost as she looked up at the sphere in front of her.
‘’Try not to look. It does that to everyone. What do you want?’’ The scientist said to her.
‘’Sorry. They sent me from personnel. They said some man had been taken prisoner. Some sort of Doctor? I'm just checking the lines of communication. Did they tell you anything?’’ She asked looking away from the object.
‘’Can I see your authorisation?’’ The scientist asked.
‘’Sure,’’ Rose replied and handed him the Doctors psychic paper.
‘’That's lucky. You see, everyone at Torchwood has at least a basic level of psychic training. This paper is blank, and you're a fake. Seal the room. Call security. Samuel, can you check the door locks? She just walked right in. And you,’’ He said turning around to face Jones, ‘’keep an eye on her makes sure she doesn’t mess with anything.’’
‘’Yes sir,’’ Jones replied with a nod.
‘’Doing it now, sir,’’ Jones smiled as he recognised the voice and judging by Rose’s face he knew that he matched the persons voice correctly.
‘’Well, if you'd like to take a seat,’’ The scientist said monitoring to a chair for Rose to sit.
---------------------------------
The Doctor was sat at Yvonne’s desk talking to her about the ghosts. Violet and Jackie stood by the window looking out at the city below.
‘’I’d do anything for a view like this,’’ Jackie said.
‘’You know what,’’ Violet began, ‘’I would too,’’ She finished with a smile.
‘’She one of yours?’’ Violet moved from the window and over to where the Doctor and Yvonne where, On the table was a laptop and she could clearly see the face of Rose Tyler and behind her stood a man that Violet recognised as Jones. Even though he’d managed to disguise himself she would never not know his face if she saw it.
‘’Never seen her before in my life,’’ The Doctor replied trying to keep his face neutral.
‘’Good. Then we can have her shot,’’ Yvonne said.
‘’Oh, all right then. It was worth a try. That's, that's Rose Tyler,’’ The Doctor said with a sigh.
‘’Sorry. Hello,’’ Rose added giving a small wave.
‘’Well, if that's Rose Tyler, who's she?’’ Yvonne asked pointing at Jackie.
‘’I'm her mother.’’
‘’Oh, you travel with her mother?’’ Yvonne asked, but she didn’t seem as if she cared about the answer.
‘’He kidnapped me,’’ Jackie corrected.
‘’Please, when Torchwood comes to write my complete history, don't tell people I travelled through time and space with her mother,’’ The Doctor interjected.
‘’Charming,’’ Jackie commented.
‘’I've got a reputation to uphold,’’ The Doctor said defectively.
‘’Excuse me? Everyone? I thought I said stop the ghost shift. Who started the programme? But I ordered you to stop! Who's doing that?’’ Yvonne’s sudden shout cut off the conversation.
‘’Right, step away from the monitors, everyone. Gareth, Addy, stop what you're doing, right now. Matt, step away from your desk. That's an order! Stop the levers! Andrew!’’
‘’There not listening,’’ Violet stated.
‘’Stop the levers!’’ Yvonne shouted.
‘’What's she doing?’’ The Doctor said wondering over to the same woman who had been counting down earlier.
‘’Addy, step away from the desk. Listen to me. Step away from the desk,’’ Yvonne said but the woman didn’t budge.
‘’She can't hear you. They're overriding the system. We're going into Ghost Shift,’’ The Doctor exclaimed.
‘’It's the ear piece. It's controlling them. I've seen this before. Sorry. I'm so sorry,’’ He pointed his sonic at the woman and she screamed, but so did the other two in the room and they all collapse.
‘’What happened? What did you just do?’’ Yvonne asked as she looked around at her employees.
‘’They're dead,’’ The Doctor stated simply.
‘’You killed them,’’ Jackie shouted taking a small step away from the Doctor.
‘’Oh, someone else did that long before I got here,’’ He replied.
‘’But you killed them!’’ Jackie repeated.
‘’Jackie, I haven't got time for this,’’ The Doctor said rather impatiently.
‘’Jackie you need to understand that they weren’t living, they were being controlled like someone in a suit,’’ She trailed off when she realised what she had said, ‘someone in a suit’.
‘’What are those ear pieces?’’ Yvonne spoke up pointing out that each person had one earpiece more than they should have had.
‘’Don't,’’ The Doctor interjected as she went to touch the earpiece on the woman.
‘’But they're standard comms. devices. How does it control them?’’ Yvonne asked.
‘’Trust me, leave them alone,’’ The Doctor ordered, but Yvonne didn’t listen.
‘’But what are they?’’ As she spoke she pulled the earpiece off and a long slimy rope from the woman’s ear came with it,, ‘’urgh! Oh, God! It goes inside their brain.’’
‘’Now you know how it controls them,’’ Violet stated as she took the earpiece from where Yvonne dropped it, she held it up to get a closer look and she took a deep breath. It all added up the Doctor had said it ‘A footprint doesn’t look like a boot’.
‘’What about the Ghost Shift?’’ The Doctor asked realising it was still happening.
‘’Ninety percent there and still running. Can't you stop it?’’ Yvonne asked looking from the Doctor to Violet, hoping at least one of them could help.
‘’They're still controlling it. They've hi-jacked the system,’’ The Doctor explained tapping on one of the computers, but nothing helped.
‘’Who's they?’’ Yvonne asked.
‘’It might be a remote transmitter but it's got to be close by. I can trace it. Jackie, Violet, stay here!’’ The Doctor ordered as he ran out of the room, with Yvonne hot on his heels.
---------------------------------
‘’We've got a problem down here. Yvonne, can you hear me?’’ Rajesh asked, however, he got no response from the other side of the laptop, ‘’Yvonne, for God's sake. The sphere is active! The readings are going wild! It's got weight; it's got mass, an electromagnetic field. It exists!’’
There was a loud thud as the door to the room swung shut and bolted the group of four inside.
‘’The door's sealed. Automatic quarantine. We can't get out!’’ He shouted becoming a little stressed about the whole situation.
‘’It's all right, babe. We've beaten them before, we can beat them again. That's why I'm here. The fight goes on,’’ Mickey said aimed at Rose.
‘’The fight against what?’’ Rose asked.
‘’What do you think?’’ Jones came to a sudden realisation at Mickey’s words, as the sphere begun to shudder violently.
‘’Mickey I have a feeling it’s not what you think it is,’’ However, Jones’s words were lost as everybody seemed transfixed by what the sphere was doing.
‘’We had them beaten, but then they escaped. The Cybermen just vanished. They found a way through to this world, but so did we,’’ Mickey explained completely ignoring Jones’s comment.
‘’The Doctor said that was impossible,’’ Rose said.
‘’Yeah, it's not the first time he's been wrong,’’ Mickey replied.
‘’What's inside that sphere?’’ Rose asked.
‘’No one knows. Cyber Leader, Cyber King, Emperor of the Cybermen. Whatever it is, he's dead meat,’’ Mickey replied.
‘’Can I just way in and say I don’t think its Cyber,’’ But yet again nobody listened to Jones.
-------------------------------------
Violet would have been surprised when the Doctor and Yvonne came into the room flanked by Cybermen, but seeing as she’d worked out all the clues she wasn’t surprised at all.
‘’Get away from the machines. Do what they say. Don't fight them!’’ The Doctor shouts at the men trying to stop the levers from moving. However, the cyber just point their guns at the scientist and shot them, all of them.
‘’What are they?’’ Jackie asked and Violet could hear the fear in the woman’s voice.
‘’We are the Cybermen. The Ghost Shift will be increased to one hundred percent,’’ The Cyberman crackled out and immediately the leavers begun to move up.
‘’Here come the ghosts,’’ The Doctor commented.
‘’But these Cybermen, what've they got to do with the ghosts?’’ Jackie asked.
‘’Do you never listen? A footprint doesn't look like a boot,’’ The Doctor replied.
‘’Achieving full transfer,’’ One of the Cybermen ordered and Violet watched as the ‘ghosts’ stood in front of them all changed into Cybermen.
‘’They're Cybermen. All of the ghosts are Cybermen. Millions of them, right across the world,’’ The Doctor exclaimed.
‘’Just because they looked human, didn’t mean they were human Jackie. I’m sorry but there as far from human as aliens come. Well unless you count the Daleks, but I doubt you’ll see them in your lifetime,’’ Violet said as she moved to hug Jackie and Jackie to Violets surprise hugged her back.
‘’They're invading the whole planet,’’ Yvonne stuttered as she looked out of the window.
‘’It's not an invasion. It's too late for that. It's a victory,’’ The Doctor stated.
-----------------------------------
‘’I know what's in there, and I'm ready for them. I've got just the thing,’’ Mickey explained as he brought out a very large gun that he had hidden under the platform below the Sphere.
‘’Bit bigger than mine,’’ Jones piped up as he looked at the firearm he had managed to take from the guard he’s knocked unconscious.
‘’This is going to blast them to Hell,’’ Mickey finished explaining, a grin on his face.
‘’Samuel, what are you doing?’’ Rajesh asked a little confused.
‘’The name's Mickey. Mickey Smith. Defending the Earth.’’
---------------------------------------
‘’But I don't understand. The Cybermen don't have the technology to build a Void Ship. That's way beyond you. How did you create that sphere?’’ The Doctor asked.
‘’The sphere is not ours.’’ The reply shocked not only Violet, but the Doctor as well.
‘’What?’’
‘’The sphere broke down the barriers between worlds. We only followed. Its origin is unknown,’’ The Cyberman explained.
‘’Then what's inside it?’’ Violet just shrugged at her father’s question; even she didn’t have a clue.
‘’Rose is down there,’’ Jackie said clearly worried.
‘’She’s got Jones, he’ll protect her,’’ Violet reassured her.
‘’How do you know he will?’’ Violet was surprised by the question.
‘’He’s a soldier; his job is to protect people. Trust me Rose is in safe hands.
---------------------------------
As the sphere opened it let off a huge ray of bright white light that caused the group in the room to shield their eyes from the light. Once recovered Jones realised that he was right, Cybermen were not the metal creatures coming out of the sphere instead it was a species that was a lot worse.
‘’That's not Cybermen,’’ Mickey stated looking confused.
‘’Oh, my God,’’ Rose breathed out.
‘’Location, Earth. Life forms detected. Exterminate!’’
‘’Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate!’’
‘’Oh this is going to be fun,’’ Jones remarked, as he smirked confusing everyone in the room. Who would smile when there surrounded by killing machines? A man who knew that they wouldn’t be killed no matter what, that’s who.
Next is Doomsday
