*

When April arrived at the table shortly after Lee excused herself to go to the bathroom, Chris thought 'What the hell is she doing here?'.

That was until his mother smiled openingly and welcomed her to their table.

Chris realized then that his mother had set him up thinking that he wasn't bringing a date to the party.

Beverly liked April very much, which could also be another reason why she had a seat at their table. But his mother liked Lee already. His mother didn't hug anyone unless she liked them. His siblings even liked Lee at first sight. His mother wouldn't pressure him to go out with April.

"It's been a while, Chris. Have you been avoiding me?" April asked as she settled into the chair—Lee's chair— beside him.

Chris bit his lip to prevent himself from telling her to move out of the seat. He didn't want to appear rude. Hopefully, April will be gone before Lee got back from the restroom.

Of course, he had been avoiding her.
April was too clingy and annoying.

Except for Beverly and Oswald, no one in the family liked April; Caesar didn't dislike people unless he had a reason to.

When Chris asked him why he hated the sight of April, his brother merely shook his head and said, 'I have a bad feeling about her'.

"I've been busy with our new project."

"Is that the reason your assistant keeps telling me you're busy every time i call?"

"Hannah wouldn't lie to you, April. I am actually busy. Some of us don't appoint other people as CEO, sit at home doing nothing while someone else does our job for us."

Chris cursed under his breath when he saw tears swell in her eyes. He knew better than to speak about the reason why she wasn't working in the company.

He started to apologize but she waved him off, poured herself a glass of wine, and drank it all in one gulp.

Chris cursed himself under his breath again.

April drinks when she's hurt or sad; drunk April wasn't fun. Especially in a gathering like this where she'd end up doing something stupid, then become the talk of the town for the seventh time that year.

"April," he said, when she poured herself a second cup and swallowed it in one huge gulp.

"I get that you don't like me," she said, tears staining her lashes. "That doesn't mean you have the right to talk to me like that."

Chris was weak when it came to tears. He hated it. Especially if he was the reason for the damned tears. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that."

"Yes, you shouldn't have said it but you did anyway. Your parents are alive, not lost in the sea where their plane crashed. It's fine. I shouldn't have come here anyway." She started to rise.

Chris clamped a hand around her wrist, apology written all over him. "Please stay. I am truly sorry for the way I spoke to you."

Beverly turned to them, her brows were furrowed in that way that showed she was either angry or curious. "April dear, is everything alright?"

Chris' eyes pleaded with her. April stared at him for a few minutes, the sadness still lingering in her eyes. Then like magic, the sadness was gone. It was as if she wasn't about to cry earlier.

She turned to face Beverly with a smile so believable that the other woman smiled back. Chris fought back a shudder at the sudden transformation.

"Chris and I were just talking about something, you don't need to worry. Everything is fine."

Beverly nodded."Okay. I'll leave you kids to it. Christopher, where is Ledia?"

"She went to the ladies'. She should be back soon."

It's been a while since Ledia left for the restroom. She should be back by now. Chris wondered what was taking her so long.

"Okay." Beverly turned to Caesar, picking off the conversation from where it stopped.

"Thank you for the save," he said, "my ass would have been toast if you hadn't said you were okay."

April's eyes glittered. "I am actually trying to imagine your ass being toast and I must admit that it's not a pleasant image."

Chris couldn't help but laugh and April joined in. He felt her hand on his arm as she leaned in a bit closer to him, but he chalked it up to her being lost in her mirth.

He was right because she withdrew her hand when Lee returned to the table with Amanda. He, then, realized that they'd been conversing in the ladies room. He wondered what they talked about.

Chris expected Lee to say something to him or even meet his gaze, instead she took the empty seat between April and his mother. He frowned, choosing to remain silent, not wanting to draw attention to them. Chris thought she liked the new seating arrangement, if she wasn't saying anything or asking April find another seat.

April faced Lee.

Chris couldn't see her face, but he could see Lee's and what he saw there made his gut tighten. She looked pissed, yet she wouldn't even look at him.

Not good, Chris, not good.

"Oh, hey, have we met before?" April asked her.

Chris rolled his eyes. As if April would ever have something to do with someone like Lee. They were so different and didn't have anything in common.

"Of course not. I'm Ledia Arden, Christopher's girlfriend."

Hearing Lee say that gave him immense pleasure.

She didn't react when he said it earlier, so hearing it come from her lips made him happy. Telling her he loved her tonight felt so right. He felt positive that they could work something out between them. Hell, he saw himself and Lee and a little girl in the future.

"Chris didn't tell me he had a girlfriend," he heard the sadness in her words. "I am April Hale.
Chris' fiancée," she said. "At least, I was going to be his fiancée before he met you."

She couldn't have him, of course, but he could offer her comfort. Chris held her hand in his and squeezed it softly. "You'll find the man for you, April."

April smiled at him as she squeezed his hand back. Chris didn't miss the look of displeasure Amanda and Caesar were shooting him. It almost felt as if they thought he was cheating on Ledia, which was ridiculous. It wasn't as if he chose to seat beside April. The girl only had his attention now, not forever; it was just until the party was over. Besides, Lee seemed fine with it.

When Lee dished the appetizer without another word, Chris figured that the conversation was over. It was so unlike Lee to be so quiet. Besides, she had been smiling before she left for the ladies, now the smile was nowhere in sight. Did Amanda say something to annoy her or what?

April asked about his work and Chris gave her few details, he also listened to her own escapades from the last time they saw each other.

April's parents died two years ago in a Plane crash. Their remains was never recovered because the plane had landed in the sea. Only a few of the plane parts were recovered.

April, twenty four at the time it happened, was left with million dollars companies to run. He couldn't fault her for hiring people to manage the company. She and the board of directors appointed a new CEO since she knew nothing about the operations. She hardly ever visited the company, unless it was necessary.

Oswald had accepted for them to marry because the man was thinking about the money he would get from the union, but Chris wasn't ready to fulfil his father's greedy wish, even if April was the last woman on earth. He couldn't imagine waking and sleeping in the same bed with her for the rest of his life.

When people started moving to the dance floor in the center of the room, Chris wanted to ask Lee to dance but she was deep in a conversation with his mother so he didn't.

"I can dance with you until she's ready," April offered.

Chris started to decline, but she cut off his protests.

"Hey, I know you're off the market, okay? One dance won't hurt anyone." She smiled at him, her perfect teeth flashing in the light. "She wouldn't mind. See, she wasn't even angry when she saw me sitting beside you. Any other woman would have demanded I move over, yet she sat beside me instead to talk to your mother. So, what's one pesky little dance?"

April was right. Lee wasn't like most women.

"Okay. Just one dance."

"One dance," she agreed.

They left the table together; Lee didn't acknowledge them, seeming lost I'm her conversation with Beverly. Chris was happy that she was bonding with his mother.

Just as they got to the dance floor, the song changed into a slow one, where they had to move closer to dance like the other couple around them.

Chris didn't want to do it, because of the intimacy of the embrace the song seemed to spark up around the dance floor, but he was a man of his word and he already gave April his word. He placed one hand around her tiny waist and held her hand in the other one. April placed her free hand on his back, together they swayed to the music.

"You must really love Ledia, huh?" April asked, a teasing smile playing on her lips.

"Is it that obvious?"

She rolled her eyes. "For starters, no man brings his girlfriend to a family event unless strong feelings are involved. Have you seen the way you look at her? You barely paid attention to me."

He grinned. "I love her, and I plan to tell her tonight. April, do you think she feels the same way about me?"

"Men." She rolled her eyes again. "I swear, men are always oblivious to important things. She looks at you like you hung the fucking moon. If she isn't in love with you then she's halfway there."

"Really?" His heart did a happy dance. "Because I plan to propose to her by Christmas. I want to spend the rest of my life with her."

"That's good. I am happy for you, really. You guys are good for each other."

"Thank you, April."

"For what?" She shot him a surprised look.

"For understanding. Some women wouldn't. They'd create a scene, spew hate words at me. Yet, here you are, offering advice to me about my future partner."

"That's what friends are for, isn't it? You can thank me by giving me one baby when your wife gives birth to twins."

Chris laughed, ignoring the strange looks the other couples shot them. "Ledia would have my head if I gave one of our babies away, I'm sure of it. You could be their godmother."

Even as she smiled, her eyes became wet. "Really?"

"Really." He returned the smile.

Everyone deserved happiness in their life. After what she'd been through, April deserved happiness, too.

The sound of glass breaking and metal hitting the tiled floor permeated the air; the sound drowning out the music.

Frowning, Chris turned to see Ledia—body still—staring at the waiter scrambling to pick up the broken glasses. Half of the room had turned to watch the commotion too, but what stole his breath was the tears streaming down her face.

He sucked in a sharp, pained breath. What happened to her?

"I'm sorry," he heard her say to the waiter.

April nudge him forward with a frown. "Go to your girlfriend."

He started forward. "Ledia!"

She fled the room.

Chris knew the reason why she was crying, or so he thought.

His chest hurt too much to breath. He had never seen Lee so upset before. The pain he glimpsed before she fled was deeper than the one he saw in her kitchen that day after that man tried to force himself on her.

Beverly stared at the door Ledia ran through, worry written all over her. Amanda's face was red with anger, which was directed at him. Caesar looked as if he didn't know whether to hit him or shout at him. He opted for the latter.

"Go get her, you idiot!"

"I hope she makes you suffer before forgiving you," Amanda murmured.

"Language, Amanda." Beverly chastised. "Christopher, why are you still standing there?"

Chris was running before he even realized it. Thankfully, the door Lee went through led to the garden.

Hopefully, it wasn't too late to fix things.

April walked out of the ballroom, a smile on her lips. She twirled her car keys in her fingers, whistling as she went.

That fool fell for her plan hook, line, and sinker. Playing the victim was fun, especially when Chris practically ignored his own girlfriend without even realizing it. The girl looked ready to kill April.

She did warn Ledia to watch her back though. April didn't take it lightly when someone tried to take what was hers. Adele from eight grade had scars as proof; the girl had a crooked nose and two broken front teeth after April dealt with her. She'd taken April's lunch, because she was the famous High school bully. None of the bullies ever tried to mess with April again.

The first part of her plan had gone smoothly without an hitch, now it was time for the second part.

Sergei was waiting for her when she got to her car;it was parked behind a Ferrari down at the driveway. The man stood up straight, his phone in his left palm.

"Sergei," she said as she leaned against the car door. "It is time."

He nodded. He pressed the speed dial button he set up for one of his minions. "Do it now," he said into the receiver.

He disconnected the call after getting an affirmation.

They waited in silence for a few minutes, taking in the expensive cars lining the driveway, the grand mansion and the well dressed valets.

Sergei's phone began to chirp. He pressed the answer button as he lifted the phone to his right ear. He listened to the person on the line with a smile on his lips, then he hung up. "It's done."

April laughed. "Good. You'll take the balance to them tonight." She pressed a hand to her cheek, eyes shining with delight. "Take the night off, too."

Sergei grinned. "What now, ma'am?"

"Have you ever played with dominoes, Sergei?"

"No, ma'am."

"Well, I have," she said. " When you start building the blocks, you arrange them in any pattern you want, making sure there's only a few inches between each block. After building it, all you have to do is just push the first block with the tip of your finger, and. . ."

"And?"

"It all comes crashing down."
