Amanda Ross was beautiful.
She had dark hair like her brothers, but hers was curly with a streak of blue running through it. Bright blue eyes reminded Lee of sapphire. She probably got the high cheekbones from Oswald, but the full lips and lush body was all Beverly.
"Do you know each other?" Chris asked.
"Yeah," Amanda said as she reached for the glass of wine a waiter poured for her. "She was the lady I told you about, dad. She saved me from dying by the hands of that psycho."
Now that Lee looked closely, she could see the faint trace of healing bruise beneath all that makeup; it wasn't obvious unless one knew what they were looking for. "I saw a woman being assaulted, and only acted on instinct by stepping in immediately thinking it may be too late when the police got there. I sort of acted on autopilot."
Chris reached for her hand, placed it on his lap, his thumb caressing the back of it. "Thank you so much, Ledia."
Lee ducked her head as faint, pink colour appeared on her cheeks. "I did what was right."
Beverly's smile lit up the whole room. "Thank you so much for saving my daughter, Ledia. Thank you so much."
"It's nothing, really." The colors on her cheeks became brighter. "I am glad that I helped."
Oswald smiled at her. It was genuine this time. "Thank you."
Lee nodded. Caesar's respect for her was visible on his face and the discreet nod of thanks was returned the same way, but they weren't discreet enough because Chris leaned towards her and said, "Why is my brother smiling at you like that?"
"Are you jealous?" She raised a brow at him, a playful smile on her lips.
"No. You're mine, so I don't have to be jealous."
Lee beamed. "As you're mine."
The talk shifted to business, contracts and merger. Amanda nodded in the direction of a door with brass knob and started to rise. Lee knew without doubt that she was to follow. "I need to make a quick stop to the ladies."
Lee waited until Amanda was almost at the door before making her own excuse. Amanda was waiting for her when she entered. She locked the door behind Lee, shutting out the noise of the party.
"Is this the part where you warn me to stay away from your brother?"
Amanda snorted. "I don't know what movies you've been watching lately, but I called you here to apologize for the way I acted that day. I should have given you time to heal before asking you to appear in court to testify against him in court."
"It's fine, really. I was upset at first but I got over it."
Amanda smiled. "Small world, huh?"
"Yeah," she mused. "Who would have thought that you'd be Chris' sister?"
They remained quiet for few minutes, then Amanda said, "Are you with Christopher for his money or is this just a fling?"
Lee sucked her teeth in. "Wow, you Ross' don't beat around the bush at all, do you?" It was rhetoric question. "While whatever relationship I have with your brother isn't any if your business, I will say this to put your mind at ease. I love Christopher and if this thing works out between us, I see myself with him in the future. Does that answer your question?"
She nodded. "Good, because the feeling is mutual."
"How do you know that?"
"Have you seen the way he looks at you? That boy would do anything you ask. Just promise me that you wouldn't hurt him, Ledia. He's been through so much. Although it does not seem like it at times, we all care about Chris so much that seeing him in pain hurts us all."
"I can't promise you that he won't get hurt because life happens and there's no telling what's going to happen in the next minute, but I can promise you that as long as we are together, I will try my best not to hurt him."
"Fair enough." She held out her hand, which made the sleeve of her dress ride up her wrist. "Truce?"
Lee's smile slipped from her face when she saw the red, swollen bruise around Amanda's wrist. "When will you tell your family about Alistair hurting you?"
"How did you know that it's Alistair?"
"Daniel. He told his uncle that his father beats his mom, which is not something a five year old should be exposed to."
Amanda pulled the sleeves over her reddened wrist. "I am a lawyer. I can't have a divorce record on my profile. Besides, I have the family's image to uphold. Father wouldn't be pleased, since he chose Alistair for me." She muttered, "Although he made mother believe she did the matchmaking."
Lee enfolded her hands in hers. "Amanda, you're no use to work or your family if things goes out of hand and you're fatally wounded."
"I know, but—"
"Think of your son. He is an innocent child who needs love and care from his parents. He feels neglected, and I know this because he said so the other day. Unless you want Daniel to be like his father, you have to do something."
"I'm scared. He will fight for to take Daniel away just to spite me."
"I don't know that much about how the law works, but I do know that no judge would give the custody of a child to an abusive husband. You're the expert, use it to your advantage. Do this for Daniel. Do it for yourself."
Amanda nodded, her body shaking. "I-i will try."
Lee embraced the woman, her heart aching for her.
The world was just so fucked up with many fucked up people in it. Although Amanda had the power to get out of the marriage, ridiculous reasons tied her down. Lee's dislike for Oswald increased. That man had zero idea about doing what's best for his children. He probably gave Amanda to that prick for some merger or something.
When Amanda finally stopped shaking, Lee released her, her own eyes shiny with unshed tears. "It will be fine, you'll see."
"I hope so, Ledia, I hope so." She laughed wateringly. "You're so kind and patient. Thank you so much. You've been a great help to everyone since you came into our lives. My brother looks happier than he's ever been and you've saved me twice now. You're the woman for my brother. Welcome to to the family."
"Thank you so much." Lee let herself be hugged. It felt so good to be accepted into this large, complicated family. Most of all, to have a strong, handsome man like Christopher by her side.
"Let's go back before my brother comes after me."
Lee laughed. "Let's."
The guests were already seated as waiters made rounds around the table with trays and trolleys of delicious food.
When they got to the table, food had arrived. There were several dishes on the table; chilled dungeness crab salad, roasted Pacific salmon with vegetable ragout, and lime meringue topped with mango and raspberry ice sorbet. Chocolate Bundt cakes were placed in small plates. Each course was served with gold and black varietals.
It wasn't only the food that arrived at the table. A lady was seated in Lee's seat beside Chris, laughing with him as she placed a hand on his arm.
It was the purple haired woman.
"What's she doing here?" Lee heard Amanda groan from beside her when they were few feet from the table.
Lee took her eyes off Chris and the woman long enough to glance at Amanda. "You know her?"
"Of course. My mother tried to set up the spoilt brat with my brother. . . I'm so glad he chose you instead. Just don't take anything she says to heart."
Amanda gave her hand one last squeeze before walking over to take the seat beside her husband. Lee had no choice but to seat between the newcomer and Beverly.
The psycho turned to her immediately as if she'd been waiting for Lee to arrive. "Oh, hey. Have we met before?"
Of course, they had. The gleam in the psycho's eyes dared Lee to talk about how they met, told her that there was nothing she could do about it. The bitch was right. Lee didn't want to ruin dinner or ruin the impression she'd made on Chris' family by telling this woman where to go.
People were around, too. The woman was an old family friend, and Lee was a newcomer. Chris may believe her, she doubted the rest would.
Lee had no choice but to play along. "Of course not. I am Ledia Arden, Christopher's girlfriend." Only Lee heard the bitch's sharp intake of breath.
Yeah, Bitch, things aren't going to work out the way you want it to. He is mine. He chose me, not you.
"Chris didn't tell me he had a girlfriend." A sad look replaced the smile she gave Lee, when she faced Chris. "I thought we were getting engaged."
"I'm sorry, April." Chris grabbed her hand and squeezed it. "You'll find the man for you, you'll see."
Lee bit her lip when she saw the gesture. First Chris allowed her to sit in Lee's seat, he didn't even acknowledge her when she returned from the bathroom. Now he was squeezing her hand and giving her a warm look? April turned to Lee— her hair obscuring her face from Chris' view— and flashed Lee a satisfied smile.
"I am April Hale, Chris' fiancée." Her brows furrowed. "At least, I was going to be his fiancée before he met you."
Lee tore her eyes away from their joined hands to see Amanda frowning at Chris and April. Caesar didn't look happy either. Alistair, on the other hand, looked smug. Beverly, Oswald and Iris were oblivious, because they were talking.
Telling herself that Chris wouldn't betray her that way, Lee decided to bury herself in food. She served herself the appetizer before the waiters could. The éclair made with dark Belgian chocolate melted on her tongue and Lee had to bite down on her tongue to keep from moaning. Whoever made these deserved an award. The Armand de Blanc complimented the appetizer.
Lee didn't know one could have a foodgasm, but miracles do happen.
"I can see that you're enjoying the appetizer." Beverly's words cut into the food haven she was in. "I've never seen my son so happy ever since that girl broke his heart."
Anne-from-stag-city.
She would forever be hated by the Ross family, it seemed. Lee was glad she acted that way, because she got Chris to herself.
"I can see the love for you in his eyes," she continued. "I know you feel the same way about him."
"It seemed everybody sees that he loves me but me. I do love your son, Beverly."
"Believe me, he does love you. My Christopher has always worn his heart on his sleeves, something some ladies take advantage of, I'm afraid."
"You raised a fine man, Beverly. Thank you so much for him."
"No, thank you for loving him." The smile lines around her eyes deepened when she smiled. "You will make him a better man, I'm sure of it."
"Tell me about yourself, Beverly; Chris never talked much about you."
"Ah, that's my son. He never talks much about his family, since we all give him so much trouble. We love him and deep down I know he loves us too."
"He needs time is all."
"You're right. As you already know, I am Beverly Ross and I am married to this difficult man." Oswald groaned when she waved in his direction, but he remained silent. "It wasn't always this rosy, you know. We both worked for our money from the scratch."
Lee listened to the story of love, joy, sadness, pain and triumphs feeling as though she was there with them every step of the way. It was refreshing and eye opening, it helped Lee know the Ross family on a personal level. Stories from Chris's childhood made her laugh and some made her eyes wet.
"How did you meet Christopher?"
"We actually met through a dating agency." Clean version was better. "I almost changed my partner but he told me to give it a try with the option that I could end it if I didn't like him. I am so glad I listened to him."
"Me too, Ledia. What about your family?"
"My mother died after giving birth to my younger sister." Tears welled up in her eyes. Lee drank her wine in attempt to keep the danged things from falling.
Maybe one day, saying it wouldn't bring so much pain.
Beverly reached for her hand and squeezed it gently. "I'm so sorry. I know how it feels because I lost my mother at an early age too. If you ever need to talk, please feel free to call me or come to see me."
"Thank you," Lee smiled, swallowing the lump in her throat. "My father stays in Manhattan too. He was an engineer, but he had to retire because he has a back ache from when he fell from the scaffolding at a job site four years ago. I own a bakery in Harlem. My sister is married and expecting a child anytime soon."
"Oh, I hope he quickly recovers. "
Lee nodded. "That's what we all hope for."
"Your sister stays in New York?"
"Yes," Lee said. "She lives in SoHo with her husband."
"You're welcome to the family, Ledia. I know you're the right woman for my son. I just feel it." She gave Lee's hand one last squeeze before pulling away. "Thank you for choosing him."
Lee could only smile. She was sure to start bawling if she opened her mouth. The warm reception she got from Beverly was so overwhelming.
The rest of their dinner passed in silence. After dinner, a man and a woman came to steal Beverly and Oswald away for a dance. Soon, the table was empty as the occupants got up to mingle with their guests as well as dance the night away.
Lee Ann Grimes' How do I live without you began to blare from the speakers. Couples rushed to the dance floor and embraced each other in a intimate dance. Lee turned to her right, expecting Chris to offer to dance but was surprised to find he and April on the dance floor. Chris' back was turned to her, but Lee saw one of his hands wrapped around April's waist and the other one holding her hand, while April's hand was also around his back. They wanted to the music, smiling at each other. Feeling suddenly awkward and exposed; seeing as she and Alistair were the only ones still seated at the table.
"Took him just few minutes in April's presence to forget you ever existed, my dear wallflower. You're only his whore until he gets married to the right woman for him. His heart lies with the woman he is dancing with because she's everything you're not." He smirked. "You'll never be enough."
Lee had heard worse, but the words cut deep nonetheless. Alistair may be an abusive asshole but he spoke the truth. April's arrival made Lee fade into the background in Chris' life. He didn't even say a word to her!
Tears filled her eyes, Lee jerked to her feet, grabbed her purse and turned to make a hasty retreat only to crash into a waiter carrying a tray of drinks. The sound of glass breaking along with the tray hitting tiles rang in the air like bullet. All eyes turned on her and the whispers began.
Lee felt like Cinderella.
It was already midnight and her godmother's charm had worn off.
She was back to being just Ledia Arden from Harlem, who lives in a tiny place above her bakery shop. Just Ledia Arden who got the shitty end of stick in her relationships.
To think she was about to tell him that she loved him tonight.
Tears blinded her vision. "I'm sorry." She apologized to the waiter who was scrambling to pick up the bigger shard of glass.
"Ledia!" she heard Chris call from behind her.
Unable to take it anymore, Ledia fled.
A/N:
Oh, Chris, why'd have to do that?
Poor Ledia. 🤧😢.
