Rising Suspicion
Cassie strolled out of the visiting room still trying to wrap her head around everything that Caleb had told her, she believed him but still, she had known Tyler for three years, and believed in her heart that he was incapable of bringing harm anybody's way. He and Caleb had always been like brothers in school despite the fact that Caleb was older therefore she could not think of any reason for Tyler to betray him in such a major way.
She was about to leave the station, but stopped once she caught sight of Brady pacing around the station looking impatient, he looked up and a look of relief came on his face once he saw Cassie.
"I'm glad you're out!" He exclaimed.
"Clearly," she said, amused "I wasn't in for that long Brady, why are you pacing about the station as though your wife were in labor?" She teased.
"It's Tamara," he said almost breathlessly.
Cassie's eyes widened and her hands automatically went to her chest that was beating rapidly.
"She's awake!" he said with such great ardor "I'm scared to go see her, I'm scared that she won't be the same person."
Cassie breathed heavily "I understand that you're scared but she needs brave protective Brady right now."
"Could you come with me? You helped me the last time, I could really use your company, and if she's strong enough we could ask her some questions about who attacked her," he said.
Cassie's eyes shot up in excitement "she could be the one to clear Caleb's name, if she gives her statement she can say if Caleb killed her or not."
"Exactly!" He said excitedly.
They walked outside and they had to push past the crowd once more before they could get to Cassie's car. They ignored their hard questions and kept on moving until they were out of their sight.
"Why didn't we just take your car? It has a siren, we would have been out of there quicker" she asked.
"If we took my car you would have had to come back here alone to pick up yours, and I don't want you taking a bus or cab here" he said seriously as though he were her father "it's too dangerous with all the threats you've been getting."
"Wow! You're such a caring dad" she teased.
"Hey I'm not that old," he laughed.
"Yeah, I'm sure you're not," she rolled her eyes.
They spent the ride teasing each other to keep the atmosphere light and hopeful. They walked up the steps to the hospital but Cassie stopped as soon as she was faced with the revolving door.
"What's wrong?" Brady asked as soon as he noticed she was unmoved.
"The fact that Matt's lifeless body passed through this revolving door makes bugs crawl under my skin," she shuddered.
"You don't have to come in if you're not ready, " he said in the gentle voice one would use to talk to a crying child.
"No," she shook her head "I want to do this, I'm doing this for Matty, Caleb, my friends and for your sister."
"If you ever feel uncomfortable don't hesitate to leave alright?" she nodded her head and flew through the revolving door as though it were about to disappear. They walked up to the reception again and the same nurse was there still murdering a piece of gum and reading a magazine, she wondered how the lady still kept her job despite her lack of professionalism.
"We're here to see Tamara Bauer please," Brady said "I was told that she was moved to a more secure room like I suggested "he said" the receptionist put down her magazine and checked for Tamara's new room in her laptop.
"Room B15" she said quickly, not even looking at Brady. She was about to pick up her magazine but then she noticed Cassie and gave her a wide smile revealing her yellow teeth. Cassie found it odd how nicely she always acted towards her, she was rude to a lot of people but never her. "Hello Cassie dear."
Cassie rose up her right eyebrow in confusion "How how did you know my name?" she stammered
The lady just kept on giving her a cryptic smile, she winked at Cassie and gave her one last equivocal smile before picking up her magazine which she continued to flip through. A feeling akin to terror washed through Cassie as she looked at the woman in shock. She felt deeply troubled by her uncanny warmness to her.
"I think we should get going," Brady said, equally creeped out by the receptionist. "What was that?" Brady asked frightened as he pulled her towards the elevator.
"I have no idea, she's always so nice to me, I've seen her act nice to some people but she's mostly rude, but with me she's always nice, it's like she knows something about me"
"I'll look into her for you, she makes me feel uneasy" he said.
Cassie nodded and together they walked to Tamera's new room. Outside her door were two officers who greeted Brady as soon as they saw him. Brady knocked on the door and they faintly heard her reply "come in"
They stepped in surprised to find that she wasn't alone.
"Peter why are you here?" Brady asked in a confused tone.
"Yeah, weren't you just at the station with me and Caleb?" Cassie asked rudely.
"I heard that our witness had woken up and so I came, " he deadpanned
"Are you seriously trying to question her?" Brady asked furiously "she just woke up for chrissake"
"Weren't you going to do the same?" Peter asked impassive.
"Yeah, but I'll know how to do so without putting any unnecessary pressure on her, she's my sister and I'll know how to handle it"
"What's the difference"
"You're very aggressive with your questioning" Cassie shot in "I know that for a fact" she pursed her lips.
"Well I'm only doing my job Cassie, all I want is for her to confirm that your brother is the killer once and for all, and for her to tell us his accomplice," he said pointing at Tamara.
That made her blood boil so much, she tried to plunge forward but Brady held her back "you douche bag" she yelled. "If there's any killer it's you"
"I'm not the one locked up in jail"
"Very soon you'll be, I'll make sure that happens," she said in a deathly tone, releasing herself from Brady's grip.
"Peter please leave, Tamara doesn't need your interrogation right now," Brady said in a frustrated tone.
"I'll be back," he said, before pompously walking out of her room. Cassie kept on glaring at him till he was masked by the shot door.
Brady walked over to Tamara and carefully sat at the edge of her bed.
"I hope he didn't bug you too much," she placed her hand on Tamara's hand that had an IV drip inserted into it.
"No," she replied with a croaked voice "he was just about to question me before you walked in and saved me," she laughed weakly.
"How do you feel?"
"Sore, weak, tired" she replied.
"The doctor said its normal for you to still feel pain for a while, it's a miracle that you're alive, I'm happy to have you back baby sis" he said stroking her hair as he placed a kiss on her forehead.
" I'm glad you're fine. Brady over here wouldn't stop crying," she teased.
"I didn't cry, some strange salty liquid just kept pouring out of my eyes uncontrollably" he said with the most serious expression on his face which made both girls laugh.
"Ouch," Tamara winced in pain.
"What's wrong?" Brady asked worriedly.
"Laughing hurts" she coughed.
"Oh I'm sorry" Brady said.
"It's alright, just pass me the water on my table, my throats dry as hell." he did as she sad and passed her the bottle of water as Cassie took a seat in an empty chair that was right beside Tamara's bed.
"So" Brady started off "we don't want you to feel pressured or anything but you'll need to tell us everything you remember from that night."
She nodded her head and slowly and painfully tried to sit up in the bed "I should have listened to you when you told me to be careful but I didn't" she said with tears rolling down her eyes.
"Hey don't cry," he cooed as he wiped off her tears with his thumb.
"The most important thing right now is that you're alright, you're a fighter and you survived it" Cassie said.
"Thank you," she said sipping on her water before continuing "I found out that there was an amazing party and so I decided to go since I'm new in town. Shortly after arriving at the party i received a call."
"A call? From who? can you remember the voice?" Cassie asked
"I think his voice was muffled, it sounded so strange"
"What did the caller say?" Brady asked
"They told me that dad was still alive Brady and I stupidly believed, I was so damn stupid" she cried ", I guess I hoped it was true, he told me to come out alone to the garden and he'll tell me everything and lead me to dad"
"He lures them in ways he knows they wouldn't be able to refuse" Cassie reasoned.
"He said that if I didn't come out alone I'll loose my chances of ever seeing dad again"
"He's been studying you, he studies all his victims for a month, that's how he gets information about them, he uses their weak spot to lure them out" Cassie said.
"That bastard" Brady spat through gritted teeth and a clenched jaw "you were only nine when he was killed" he said stroking Tamara's hair "I don't blame you for being hopeful"
"Yeah, when I got there the garden was empty and dark I waited for a while but no one came, I turned around to go back in when I felt a hand over my mouth, I tried fighting my way out but he was just too strong" she said with more tears rolling down her eyes.
"It's okay Tamara, take your time okay?" Brady said sympathetically.
"He dragged me deep into the garden where no one could see, he turned me around and stroked my hair, he was in all black, he had a mask covering his face, he pulled me in for a hug and then he kept on sniffing my hair" she cringed.
"That's crazy!" Cassie exclaimed and Brady just looked so perplexed.
"And then he called me Rose, he started crying and he told me he was sorry, he told me that he loved me but I cheated on him and I have to pay and then he- then he" she paused for a bit and shut her eyes "he pulled out a knife and stabbed me lightly and every time the knife tore into my skin he would say I'm sorry Rose, I still love you. I fought, I kicked, at a point I ran away but he pulled me back, he kept on stabbing me lightly but the last time he drove the knife in forcefully and lay me down on the grass, he placed a kiss on my forehead and said 'I'm so sorry Rose' and then he placed something in my hair, I was too weak to even see what it was."
"He placed a burnt rose in your hair" Cassie said. "Tamara?"
"Yeah?" She croaked.
"Do you remember who saved you?"
"All I remember is a guy coming up to me, my vision was blurred, it was dark and I was too weak to pay attention to anything, he tried helping me but I remember him running away eventually"
"So if you see him anywhere you wouldn't be able to tell?"
"No, I'm sorry"
"Cassie that has to be Caleb" Brady said "but if she can't identify him, we can't save him"
"I know" she said crestfallen. "But from what she's said we can put Peter in jail can't we?"
He shook his head "She didn't actually see Caleb save her, we have no proof, the evidence against Caleb is way stronger"
"But it's in the papers Brady, Peter dated Rose Bryson and he called Tamara Rose, why would they think it's Caleb?"
"Cassie I promise you that I will do my best, you know how things are in Freetown, they've already set their mind on Caleb being the killer. To them Peter is a saint, their hero, after all he was the one who caught Caleb"
"Who's Caleb?" Tamara asked.
"He's my brother" Cassie said, "he's being accused for your murder, but I promise you that he didn't do it, he's innocent"
"Then why is he locked up?"
"He was the one who saved you, he took off his shirt to help stop your bleeding, the police got a hold of that shirt and they think he is the killer because your blood was all over it. Please try hard Tamara, try your hardest to remember" Cassie pleaded desperately.
"I'm so sorry Cassie,I just can't I wasn't exactly conscious I was too weak, all I remember vividly is the attack because of how terrorizing it was"
"Cassie I'm sorry" Brady said placing his hands on her shoulders "I'll do everything I can to help Caleb, I promise, everything will be okay"
"What do you mean everything will be okay?" She sparked "Brady my life is a freaking mess, I helped put my brother in jail and now he's about to get killed, I'm desperate" she sobbed "Tamara please try your hardest to remember, I beg you" she said kneeling in the ground.
"I'm so sorry Cassie, I wish I could help you but it was dark, really dark, there were no lights outside, it's not a matter of me remembering what he looked like because I'm not even sure that I saw his face" she said softly. "I'm terribly sorry"
*
Cassie drove Brady back to the station after hours of staying with Tamara, although she was sad that she couldn't exactly be of any help to Caleb, she was also happy that she was doing well and that Brady was finally in a good mood.
"I'm sorry that Tamara couldn't help you Cassie" Brady apologized.
"You can stop apologizing now Brady, we'll find some other way to prove Caleb's innocence" she said with determination.
"Yes we will, I promise you that" he said as Cassie pulled up In front of the station that was now almost clear from all the reporters and the ruthless crowd.
"Thank God they're all gone" Cassie said relieved "I can't face those people again, not today, not ever"
"Well it's already seven, if they're still here I'd be scared" he said "I'm sorry about the way they attacked you, these people are terrible"
"It's alright, it's what I deserve for being such a terrible person"
"You're not s terrible person Cassie" he said as he unbuckled his seatbelt "drive safe" he told her as he got out of the car and ran up the stairs of the station.
Cassie was about to drive back home when she heard her phone beep, she flinched a little for the possibility of it being another threat. She opened up the message but it was only her mum.
'Cassie dear, please get some eggs from the store, Martha forgot to get them when she went shopping'
Cassie pulled up at the store after a long, relaxing drive. She walked in and received a few stares from people, they had obviously seen her in the news, luckily only a few people gave her disapproving looks, she quickly picked up the eggs, paid for them and walked out.
She was about to open up her car door when she saw a car that she recognized not too far from hers, it was Tyler's. She dropped the eggs in her car and crept over to his car, she peeped through his window to see that it was empty, but she was sure it was Tyler's car, she knew his plate number way too well.
She scanned the area to see if she would see him anywhere she walked round a bit and almost turned back around to his car, but then she heard noises, it sounded like two people were arguing. She walked all the way to the edge of the store and then she slowly peeped to the side to see who it was.
It was dark but she could still tell perfectly well that it was Tyler that she saw, she didn't get why he would come all the way to such a secluded area as though he didn't want to be seen. He was in a heated argument with someone, she was shocked to see how angry he was but that wasn't even the most shocking part, it's who he was in an argument with that shocked her the most, her eyes widened as she saw who it was, it was no one other than Peter.
