Chapter 84: The Demise of Agnus, Purple Corruption

Dante POV

Entering the cathedral once again I found the place completely bathed in darkness. A single light shone down on a lone person. I'm pretty sure he was the Order of the Sword's big brain guy or something. He sat on the steps looking at a piece of paper.

He must have eventually noticed me as he arose to his feet and calmly stated "It was my assumption that those demons would prove far inferior." He looked directly at me before adding "In the face of your tactics."

I decided have a little fun with the situation, turning another spotlight on, I placed a foot on a chair before replying "You summon and kill. Summon and kill. I fail to see the logic here. Is sanity the price to pay. For POWER?!"

Out of nowhere, the scientist guy pulled a skull out and looked at it, saying "Humans, they are but stubborn and foolish. It takes a journey to hell, for them to accept and praise their god." He abruptly crushed the skull and snapped "A fact that tickles, irony's judgement." He gently raised his hand up and blew the bone powder away.

Still, I played along, retorting "And your judgments interest me not." Standing up I added "For I'm here, to reclaim, what is rightfully mine!" The scientist guy shifted into his demonic form as he answered my statement yelling "YAMATO!"

He raised his sword up in the air before continuing "That is what you seek! And that is why, I wait, in your, PATH!" He yelled the last part however I wasn't going to let him one-up me like that. With a spray of confetti, I appeared in front of him before delivering my best retort yet.

"You will fumble in your opposition of my quest." I raised Ebony and shot it. I then leapt up to the top of one of the statues before adding "Though I encourage, for an opportunity, to battle a being of such grand delusion, as you, is a sweet fortune."

I gave my hand a faint mocking kiss however before either of us could move, our performance was interrupted by the door to the cathedral flying open followed by a gunshot...

Y/N POV

I kicked the door open and instantly shot Cinder into the air. My eyes fell on the room as I began looking around slowly. First I noticed Dante standing on top of a giant statue which I assumed was meant to be Sparda.

My eyes then shifted lower and I noticed Agnus in his Angelo form stood in the centre of the room. Even though his expression remained stationary, he exclaimed in a shocked tone "You?!" I sighed before muttering "How many times am I going to have to deal with that annoying 'you' greeting today?"

Dante grinned before saying "Ah, glad you finally caught up with me. Did you like the little display on the way here?" I replied "Oh you did a really good job Dante. I especially liked the part where you took out TWO demons, closing TWO Hell Gates without me."

The last part had a somewhat cynical tone to it as Dante raised his hands defensively and commented "Hey what was I meant to do? I had no idea when you'd recover. I had to occupy myself somehow." I shrugged and said "Fair enough, but as a consolation prize, I get bug boy over here." I said this pointing Cinder towards Agnus.

Agnus fumed and yelled "Bug boy?! How DARE you!" Dante asked "Aww, do you have to?" I nodded and said "Yes. This guy has also been a reoccurring pain in my ass. Not to mention we'll be even so you won't owe me anything." I smirked knowing exactly how to convince him as I added "Either that or you can just pay me to compensate for wasting my time."

Dante quickly raised his hands and said "Fine, he's all yours!" I grinned before saying "You're most kind." Agnus yelled "Who do you think you are?! I am not some toy you can play with!" I retorted "Be quiet, I will be your opponent now."

Agnus' demeanour seemed to shift completely, if his Angelo form could emote properly, I'm sure he'd be smirking right now. "V-very well! I suppose this is where we settle things then. You and me." I holstered Cinder and drew Eclipse, replying "Right you are."

We just stared at one another for a moment in silence. Dante went and casually sat in one of the pews, watching intently. I stood in anticipation, waiting for Agnus to make the first move. Eventually he did, abruptly conjuring a Gladius and hurling it at me.

I easily dodged as Agnus took the the sky, his insect-like wings flittering away as he hovered off the ground. He instantly conjured two more Gladius so that all three of them flew around the room trying to strike me, however I continued avoiding them with relative ease.

I spun around and hit one with Eclipse, almost like a baseball, I sent it flying back towards him. The blade his Agnus in the face, unfortunately it was only the hilt of the sword, not the blade. Otherwise this fight would have been over instantly.

Agnus growled in anger before gripping the hilt and launching himself towards me, trying to swipe at me with the sword. I raised Eclipse and managed to block with little effort. We duelled for a moment Eclipse striking against his Gladius before we eventually met in a brief clash.

As our weapons collided Agnus said something peculiar "So, it was you then? The one who slew Arius and brought down the Uroboros Corporation several years ago." I raised an eyebrow and asked "How do you know about that?"

To this Agnus simply replied "I have my sources. I'd expect nothing less from a Son of Sparda. How did you keep hidden this long though? I am surprised you kept your identity hidden from the Order for this long."

Before I could answer that, I instantly got a strange feeling followed by a whistling noise. Both me and Agnus dived to the side as a Gladius sword hurtled past us. If I'd have not noticed it, we would have both been impaled.

As we landed back on the ground, I turned to look at Agnus and asked "Really? You were trying to distract me? That's low even for you." Agnus replied "If it works." To that I just said "You aren't wrong. But that doesn't stop me being furious!"

I dashed forward, Eclipse in hand and viscously slashed Agnus across the chest. He let out a yell before conjuring another wave of Gladius demons. They flew around us rapidly before all turning towards me and flying in my direction.

I swung Eclipse around, batting them away before pulling out Cinder and shooting towards Agnus, each shot hit him head-on, however it wasn't quite enough to finish him off. I swapped back to Eclipse and proceeded to perform slash after slash. Agnus tried to use a Gladius to knock me away however I just got rid of it and resumed my barrage.

And it was with that onslaught of attacks that Agnus was flung into a nearby pew and he reverted back to his human form with a golden glow. He looked at me in a mixture of both shock and fear as he exclaimed "How! C-c-can there be s-s-such a difference, between us?!"

I looked at Dante briefly who just nodded. I turned back to the blubbering alchemist before replying "It's simple. You surrendered your humanity." Agnus pointed at me and exclaimed "B-but you are not human! S-so why am I inferior?!"

I corrected him "I am HALF human. But I digress. You assume humans are weak, their bodies lack the strength speed or other abilities that demons have. I'll admit your ability to conjure and control those Gladius' was really impressive. It didn't help you in the end against me though now did it?"

Agnus fumbled, pulling out a notepad and pen looking at me intently as I said "But there's one thing humans have that most demons don't." Agnus looked at me almost in awe, it was kind of funny seeing his complete change, especially since I knew what would come next.

He asked "W-what is it that demons l-lack? P-please, for the sake of my research, please, t-tell me!" In an instant I spun around, drawing Eclipse and swiftly stabbing it into his chest!" Agnus looked at me wide-eyed and dropped his notepad and pen to the floor.

It was almost the same thing that happened to Echidna. Blood dribbled down the blade, a single drop fell and landed on the notepad, staining the paper in red. And that's when it happened AGAIN! The purple electricity built up.

Agnus let out an ear-piercing scream as the electricity consumed his body. His initially dark skin turned a ghostly pale. His muscular build turned skinny and withered. His scream slowly began dying our before he lost all resistance and slumped.

As I withdrew the blade causing Agnus' body to fall to the ground, blood tricked from his mouth and formed a pool, that combined with the wound on his chest. That's when the headache returned causing me to let out a gasp in pain.

I slumped over as Dante rushed over "Y/N! Is it happening again?!" I kept breathing heavily and slowly lifted my head up. It was at this point that Dante mumbled something in shock "Your eyes, they've turned purple..."

I don't know what came over me, in an instant I lashed out, attempting to hit Dante with Eclipse. Dante dodged however I let out a sadistic laugh and attempted to swing again. Dante caught my hand and yelled "Y/N! What the hell has gotten into you?!"

Sense seemed to return to my mind. I blinked for a moment, noticing the position me and Dante were in. Me literally holding Eclipse at his throat with him pushing it back. I stepped backwards, stuttering "I-I don't know. What's happening to me?"

Dante responded "Well your eyes have turned back to their usual E/C at least. We'll talk about this later. For now we've got a Saviour to deal with." I nodded and smiled. However I felt anything but happy.

I turned to Eclipse, in a brief moment I'd lost all reason. It was as if I was under the influence of another...

Author's Note: And that's it for this chapter, I really enjoyed this one since Agnus is one of my favourite Devil May Cry characters. This chapter also helped me set up the first half of the DMC5 segment as well. I really hope you enjoyed the chapter as much as I enjoyed writing it and as always, thank you for reading.
