Chapter 47: A Mysterious Invitation

Y/N POV

"-Please, save my husband." The strange woman pleaded. Me and Lady were paying yet another visit to Devil May Cry when this mysterious woman showed up with a mission for Dante. He responded to this "He likes to gamble?"

Image of the woman:

Even though I was currently observing Lady and Patty in a game of pool, I partially was tuned in on the conversation, she explained "Yes, he was a straight and narrow man before we got married. But then it's like he became a different person all of a sudden and got addicted to gambling."

Dante replied "Gambling is like a sickness but there's one big difference between a gambling addiction and a common cold. There's no medicine to cure yourself of it. You might as well give up on him."

The woman replied "Please! If my husband goes on like this, he could be killed!" In the corner, sat Dante's manager, J.D Morrison, I didn't know what the J.D stood for however he seemed like a nice enough guy, as you probably could guess, Dante owed him a sum of money as well.

Image of J.D Morrison:

Morrison puffed the cigarette he was smoking and spoke up "Come on. Don't be so cold Dante. You know you should always be nice to the ladies. Or try to. I know it may not sound like it, but this job could be up your alley."

I will admit, I was confused about what he meant, so far the job just came across as peculiar for a demon hunter. Though one thing I had learnt about Morrison was that his jobs were always legit.

Timeskip...

Shortly after the woman had left, we were all stood around, listening as Morrison explained to us about another demon that had emerged lately. Patty was the first to speak up by asking "King?" Morrison replied "Yes, it's said he's a gambler who brings death. There've been a number of well-known gamblers who's gone missing, the only common thread is they all went out to play cards and then they never came back. Before long there were rumours all over the city saying that anyone who plays this 'King' will end up dead."

Lady pointed out "So, this King could be a Demon? Is that what you're saying Morrison?" Dante added "If that's true, I guess, I've gotta gamble with a demon." Lady interjected "It'd probably be better you NOT doing that." I nodded and added "She's right, you don't have the best luck with cards do you."

Lady added though "Besides, you even remember how much money you owe me and Y/N right now? And Y/N's right, you totally suck at gambling." I folded my arms muttering "Glad I'm finally right for a chance."

Dante grinned and said "Because I'm nice to the women when I play." Patty suddenly piped up angrily "Hey Dante! When're you finally gonna pay up for the game lost to me earlier?!" I looked at her saying "Wait you're serious?" I then started laughing to myself as Dante calmly replied "I'm nice to the women and children."

He then stood up asking "But how do I find a guy when I don't even know what he looks like? If I just play cards wherever, this'll take forever." Patty commented "An infinite amount of money." This made Dante say "Shut your face."

Morrison placed something on Dante's desk, it was revealed to be a box and an envelope. Patty asked "A letter?" Morrison replied "It's an invitation to that luxury cruise ship turned casino, operating in the next town over. It was sent by King."

I commented "So, this big-bad King wants to gamble with Dante hmm? Should be a fun time." Dante opened the box revealing a small pocket-watch. Morrison continued "Since he went to the trouble to invite us, it would be bad form not to accept. And since you'll be going anyhow, you can grant that woman's request. You did say you're nice to woman and children didn't you?"

Dante analysed the pocket watch before saying "I don't know who this King guy is, but he seems like one stuck-up son of a bitch." I will admit, I was a little disappointed that I wasn't invited, I was always the better poker player than Dante.

I placed a hand on his shoulder, "If you need someone to tag-in for you. Just ask, we both know I'll do a better job of getting this King to reveal themselves." Dante just glared at me  but I smirked back.

Morrison spoke-up saying "That might work. Besides, we can all go." I smiled and said "Should be an absolute riot." Morrison said "Okay, I'll go make the arrangements for us all. The big game is tomorrow night." With that he went out of the door.

Lady casually turned to Dante and gestured to the pool table and asked "So, fancy a game?" Dante shrugged and replied "Yeah, sure why not. Might actually kick your ass this time." I just said "I'll stay here and keep score for you."

The two began playing however we were soon interrupted when Patty knocked over Dante's coat hook. Lady quietly asked "Patty?" However when she turned around, her eyes were widened and glazed over, and she was holding one of Dante's firearms.

She muttered in a zombified state. "A game Dante, let's play a game. Are you going to die, or am I?" I noticed she was wearing the pocket-watch as a necklace and my eyes narrowed at it. Lady yelled "Patty!" As Dante added "Stop!"

He raced towards her as there was a gunshot. Luckily no one was injured however Patty passed out from the experience. As Dante held her, I picked up the pocket-watch and analysed it for a moment.

There was something going on here, and it would seem we'd need to play King's game to find out...
