Chapter 34: The Secret of the Mysterious Knight
Y/N POV
There was only one thing left for me and Dante now. Locate Mundus and put a stop to his goal, no matter what. Though first things first, we would need to find him and to be honest, I had no idea in the slightest where we would find him and I doubt Dante did either.
Nevertheless, we both ventured around the castle, searching for anything that may be able to help us, or at least provide us with some sort of indication to his whereabouts.
Following the battle with that 'Nightmare' creature, we made our way out of a large wooden door to the side and found ourselves at a bridge. We walked most of the way across it however about half way, we found that the bridge had been destroyed and all that remained were a series of floating stone platforms above the ocean below.
I analysed each of these platforms and in doing so, me and Dante were actually able to calculate an effective route, leaping across the different stone platforms, making sure we didn't fall into the water beneath us, until eventually we arrived on the other side.
Here was found a small circular room with two square frames on either side. In the centre was an insignia which Dante slowly stepped towards. He then raised a strange artefact which lit up along with the insignia on the wall.
To my surprise, the two frames suddenly began sparking, and inside them, gateways to what I assumed were different areas in the castle, began to form. Dante stepped forward, towards the left portal before turning to me and saying "Come on. This way."
I just nodded, after all, I had already been through a portal shortly before my first encounter with the Phantom and now, I was better prepared so without hesitation, I watched as Dante leapt through the portal before following after him myself.
We both landed in a small room somewhere else within the castle, turning around, I saw that same gateway still present. We exited the room and ascended a spiralling staircase that lead into another room where we found two more mirror-like gateways.
One of them opened and seemed to lead back to the arena where we fought the Griffon for the final time. Upon trying to exit though, we were ambushed by two creatures, appearance-wise they resembled those Blades however these ones had an ice-themes appearance going on.

The pair attacked us and we took them on one each. As I thought, they weren't all that much of a challenge. I dodged the frantic slashes from the demon's ice claws and soon countered with a few attacks from Eclipse. It didn't take long for us to dispatch the pair of lesser demons.
With them out of the way, we made our way out of a different door to last time and this one instead lead us into a castle hallway, right at the bottom of a flight of stairs. Naturally we went ascended and found ourselves face to face with those typical Marionettes.
We dispatched them instantly and progressed into the door at the end of the corridor. Here we found ourselves confronted by a dragon head statue spewing fireballs. Any attempt to progress caused us to be knocked back.
Dante then stepped forward and said "I think I have an idea. Wait for the fireball to shoot." As another one shot out, he drew his sword and struck it like a Baseball bat. The fireball was knocked back and into the statue's face destroying it easily. He yelled out in victory "HOME RUN!"
Once that was dealt with we then encountered another puzzle involving a light and platforms that would turn invisible in the darkness. Me and Dante both leapt across these platforms until we eventually found an artefact at the end known as the Quicksilver. Not to be confused with the ability I learned of the same name.
With the Quicksilver in hand, we retraced our steps, out of that room and back down the corridor. Instead of going down the steps though, we instead turned right and towards a small door which had initially been locked.
Using the Quicksilver, we were able to unlock the door and enter into a large dark room. Something told me there was something or someone waiting for us here. And it turned out my thoughts were correct.
Right on the opposite side of the room, staring out of the window, was that silent Knight we had encountered twice before now. As soon as the door closed behind us, he spun around and quickly drew his large sword before staring at us.
Dante shook his head before stepping forward and saying "A man with guts and honour, I like that. It's a shame you serve Mundus." The Knight simply pointed his blade at us with a growl before suddenly impaling it into the ground and letting out a yell.
A gust of wind emanated from his body that erupted towards us, even making us stagger back. Much to our surprise however, when he was done with his impressive display and raised his head. We were surprised to see his helmet was gone, but we were even more surprised to find out who he really was...
VERGIL! I couldn't believe it! Even after he clearly used those same sword projectiles in our last battle. I didn't want to believe that Vergil had somehow fallen under Mundus' control. Yet here he was, clear as day. His skin was even more pail than I remember it being and his eyes were glowing bright red.
Once again, he drew his sword and got into a stance, causing both me and Dante to do the same. Instantly, he dashed forward, trying to stab at us with his large blade. However we both dived out of the way, avoiding the attack.
Vergil swiftly spun around and tried to slash at Dante however he raised Alastor to block it. He then went towards me for another attack however I raised Eclipse and we met in a clash. As I stared into his eyes, I saw that they lacked the same fire Vergil had possessed nine years ago. Now he was just void of any emotion at all.
As we separated from the clash, he instantly fired some more of those projectile swords at me however I raised Cinder and shot all of them, causing them to shatter into glass-like shards. Dante then jumped in with a slash, actually catching Vergil off guard by slashing at his back, actually managing to cut his back and slice his cape clean off.
This caused Vergil to let out an angry growl in the same tone as this knight he was being possessed into being. He then focused his attention on Dante, going in for a series of slashing attacks. One of which actually managed to cut Dante's cheek while the others all missed.
Vergil surrounded himself with several of them swords and had them spin in a circular motion around him, all of them pointing outward. He then formed a few more that were aiming directly at us both, two for me, two for Dante.
As he shot those ones, we once again dodged. He followed up by stopping the circular spinning of the others before finally launching them towards us. I leapt into the air and activated my Devil Trigger in response before using the wall to rebound into him.
Dante also accessed Devil Trigger and ran forward. We both let out everything we had. The fact that we were fighting Vergil didn't change anything, in fact it only solidified our resolve to push forward. With both of us going at it, full force, Vergil was having trouble keeping up with us.
I eventually slashed forward causing Vergil to stagger back and Dante continued by going in with a series of slashed and stabs. In the end, Vergil stumbled backwards yet again before collapsing onto his knees. I warned him "Stand down Vergil, I don't want to hurt you any more!"
However suddenly Vergil gripped the sides of his head as blue electricity surrounded him. He floated up into the air and was surrounded by a blinding blue light that made both me and Dante shield our eyes.
Once the light faded, we lowered our arms and there was no sign of Vergil anywhere. All that remained was his amulet, identical to Dante's, lying on the ground where he had last been stood. Dante walked over to it silently and picked it up.
I could tell there were thoughts going through his head and I will admit, I was greatly upset by these events. Vergil was among the only biological family I had left. I had lost him once before and now it seemed he was gone once again.
The glare that was now present in Dante's eyes said it all. Mundus was going to PAY FOR WHAT HE HAD DONE!
Mundus POV
I didn't even glance at Trish as I informed her "Trish, Vergil has been defeated. You know what you must do. Now go." Trish stared back at me before bowing and saying "Yes master." With that she turned and left.
In my statue-like state, I remained sat in my throne. It would only be a matter of time before I would have both of Sparda's remaining sons either within my grasp or out of the picture. It was finally time that I finished what I started twelve years ago...

(I'm referring to twelve years since Y/N's mother died, he was 15 then and he's 27 in this segment.)
