Chapter Seven: Yea, I feel it too
"How much do you know about the children of Lucifer?" he asks as we walk through the streets making our way towards...well...I have no idea where we are going but I hope we get there soon because my back is really starting to hurt. All I know is that, after hearing some demonic screeches heading towards the train station, both of us agreed it was best to find somewhere not outside to have this conversation.
"Not too much. Just a few things I picked up from the books at home. I read somewhere they were called the Kenites. Evil little shits who took the same path as their father. All of them were male though. Never once did I see any references to a daughter."
I rack my brain in search of any other information I might have forgotten. When I was old enough to realize that Kristoff truly believed my father had some form of demonic background I began to read every book I could about the ruler of the underworld. It was the only lead I had. I always ended up empty handed. The books always spoke of his sons.
"That's because all of his daughters were kept a secret."
"All of them? How many are there?"
"There were six," Ash says quietly. "Now there is only one. You. I told you...everyone I have met that can do what you can do is dead."
"Why keep them a secret?"
"Because it was prophesied that one day, one of those daughters would rule Hell. Well technically it was prophesied one of them would become far more powerful than Satan himself could ever imagine, kill him and then rule Hell."
"Oh," I mumble. "Well now I definitely think you have the wrong person because I have zero intentions of ruling Hell. Ever. And I'm not that powerful, you said so yourself."
"No. I said you were under trained. Out of all of the daughters that I've encountered...you seem the most likely candidate to rule."
I stop dead in my tracks, half frozen from the words he just said and the other half due to the fact that that feeling has returned. The one from earlier, right before I was attacked.
"Ash..."
"Yea, I feel it too." He steps in front of me, blocking my body with his own. Most people would consider this a sweet gesture but I just find it down right insulting.
The howling on the street grows louder and I hear the skittering of claws coming towards us. Dozen of white eyes stare at us. Their bodies resembling that of a man and a bear combined.
"Stay behind me," he warns. He reaches down, pulling a large knife from his boot.
The first one is on us in seconds, slamming into Ash's chest. He grunts, pulling the creature off him before quickly jamming a knife into its gut. He slices and the sounds of entrails hitting the ground fills the air. He tosses the body aside casually. The creature in front of me is one I have never seen before.
Claws dig into the fresh wound on my back and I am ripped away from him, spinning towards the vile looking thing. My hands on are its scorched fur skin in no time, ripping the life from it. I throw a glance over my shoulder just in time to see Ash taking down multiple demons at once. This is all the assurance I need to continue the battle without him.
Four of the creature surround me, tongues gliding over rotting teeth. Instead of waiting for them to attack I take charge and throw myself towards it. My shoulder slams full force into its torso. I twist, locking my hands around its throat for the second it takes to snap its neck. Its life force is strong and pulling it would take too much energy. I don't want to risk tiring myself out.
Light floods the street again and this time I look up in time to the source. Ash's palms. Hot damn that guy has some power to him. The light touches the demon creatures and they instantly burst into flames.
Making the mistake of believing I am distracted, another one charges at me. I throw all me weight into the hit, shoving my fist deep into its chest. I rip its heart out, tossing it off to the side.
Ash makes quick work of the last two, taking a knife to each other their throats. He takes his time on the last one, severing its head completely. That is when I feel the burning start.
It begins at my hip, a soft heat that is soon an out of control fire. I yelp, grabbing at the soaked fabric. Ash is by my side quickly, grabbing me as I begin to fall. He rips the shirt, exposing the large chunk of flesh now missing from my side. Thick red blood pours from the wound.
"Shit," he curses under his breath, lifting me off the ground.
I rest my head against his chest as he cradles my back with one hand and legs with the other. He begins to walk and a jolt of pain rips through where my side should be. I scream, arms flailing out in an attempt to stop the pain. Trust me, I know this is a pointless move. I have no idea what the hell kind of demon that was but it obviously took a chunk out of me and now I have to accept the fact that I am dying. As much as I would like to bow out gracefully...screaming and kicking seems like the thing to do at the moment.
Blood loss is causing my head to spin and at this point I have no idea how long I have been pointlessly thrashing about but it seems as if we have made it to some sort of apartment. I don't know who owns this place but they are going to be mad when I bleed all over their pretty white furniture. Serves them right though. Who the hell even buys white furniture? Someone who wants them to be bleed all over, that's who.
"Still with me princess?" Ash asks.
Why does he sound so far away? Why do I feel so floaty? Is floaty even a word? It should be. I feel like I am just floating around in a calm pool of water. At least my side doesn't hurt. Shit, I think that is a bad thing. No pain means that I am either about to die or there is some super bad nerve damage going on in that hole in my side.
"Makenna!" Ash yells. He is now shaking me.
"Are you always this violent?" I slur. "Can't you see I am trying to die over here? Obviously not or else you wouldn't be shaking me. Can't you let me die in peace?"
"You're not going to die," he half laughs. "Don't be so dramatic. I need you to pull from me."
"Trying to get me high before I die?" I giggle. "Hey, that rhymed. Uh oh, I think I might have lost a little too much blood."
"You're not going to kill me." He sounds angrier now. "Focus on the source of the pain and pull from me damnit."
"There is no pain."
The words are barely out of my mouth before Ash pulls his knife out, burying it deep into my side. I scream and my hand flies to his chest. I can feel the pulse of power and life the second my fingers touch his skin. Up until this point I didn't know how truly powerful he is and, now that I do, I am not so certain he is someone who should fully be trusted.
Really pulling from him is harder than I thought. I had only tugged at him during our encounter at the diner but now that I was actively trying to pull, it seemed to fight back. He lets out a sigh and I feel him being to relax. I feel his power flow into me and the searing pain in side begins to fade.
The head rush from his power kicks in and I let the high wash over me. My hand moves from his chest, sliding under the hem of his shirt. Hmm, his skin is smooth. Jesus, does he have like a twenty pack under there or something? I let my fingers wander, tracing the firm muscle of his skin.
"You can stop feeling me up now," he says playfully. He moves my hand away with ease and I fall back onto the couch. All the pain from earlier is gone and the only thing I can feel is the heavy buzz running through my veins.
I open my eyes, looking up at the blood soaked man hovering over me. The playful smile is still on his face and it looks as if the pull has barely affected him.
"You need sleep," he orders. I have a list of comebacks for him but none of them seem to find their way to the surface. The only response I manage is a yawn followed by giving him the bird. I close my eyes, sinking further into the soft cushions.
