Chapter 9: "911, Where's Your Emergency?"

"Um, hey," Kate replied, sitting next to him on the bench.

"It's kind of late. You should keep going," He murmured, looking back up to the stars. Then, she heard a soft chuckle, "What's with these coincidences? We've literally bumped into each other like four times, including the first time and this one."

She looked up, too. It was just a vast fabric of blue with two white dots. Nothing else.

Curse light pollution. If there were none, I'd actually have the constellations to talk about to this gloomy kid sitting next to me for cheering him up.

"The universe is rarely so lazy."

She heard another soft chuckle, barely audible. Also, a mumble, which she couldn't make out.

"And to reply to your previous statement, it's late for you too, you know. It's also dangerous for a boy to walk around at night," Kate rolled her eyes.

"As if, I'm pretty strong, you know," Oliver huffed.

"Hah- Forget that conversation back at the arcade? What if it was someone like me- who can totally kick your ass, by the way- attacked you on your way?" Kate said in a smug tone.

He snorted, "I'll just steal your eye-drops, then you'll itch your eyes to death."

She snorted back, "The drops last twelve hours, dude. So, even if you did, I could still walk home and get my extra eye-drops. That's saying if you even can steal it."

"Is that a challenge?"

"Nope. Just a thought." You could hear the smirk in Kate's voice.

Then, all of a sudden, the air turned gloomy, again.

What is up with this guy? Is he like a moody teenager or something? Oh, wait, he is... And I am too...

"So, Oliver. Isn't it a bit late for you? Wasn't your house pretty far from here?" Kate asked.

"I could just stay at Jordan's place."

"Unless you wanna break in and seem like a criminal, I don't think that could work."

"At his parents?"

"Uh-huh. So, whatchya gonna do now?"

"I could walk home. It won't take long." He sounded like he was lying...

Kate scoffed, "Tell me the real thing. How long does it take?"

"A half an hour."

"I can so see through you. You aren't even a good liar. How long does it really take?"

"Two hours..." He mumbled.

Kate's expression didn't falter, "Let's go." She stood up.

Oliver's eyes were slightly wide, "What?"

"Let's go." Kate didn't give Oliver any time to respond, and pulled him up to stand.

"Uh- where are we going? That's not the way to my house..." Oliver said.

"It is the way to mine. Let's go, I'm not letting you walk alone back home at this hour, when someone could easily kidnap or rape you."

"I thought those happened to girls." Kate turned around with a horrified look.

"Have you been on the internet? There are some seriously effed up people in this world." Oliver caught up with Kate and walked besides her.

"I need to keep up with the internet, then." There was a certain emotion to that statement which Kate couldn't decipher. It was almost bitter.

"Yeah, you do." Kate said, before stopping completely.

"What happened, Kate? Why'd you stop?" Oliver asked.

Kate hushed him, and pointed somewhere in front of them.

Oliver followed his eyes to where she was pointing at.

Kate grabbed Oliver's arm and slowly walked towards the wall of the big store. Peeking around the corner, they looked into the dark area, where it looked like only cars were parked. But there were only two cars.

There was a dude trying to drag a duffel bag to his car, it looked slightly heavy, since he was dragging it.

"What's he doing?" Oliver whispered.

"How should I know?" She whispered back.

"What is he carrying?"

"How the eff should I know?! If you wanna know so much, then go and ask him."

Kate could see Oliver roll his eyes. But, then they both continued watching this suspicious man.

He was having trouble getting the bag loaded onto his trunk.

"What if it's a dead body?" Kate whispered, out of nowhere.

"That... isn't actually that unreasonable." Oliver said, his eyes a bit widened.

"So, let's say it is. What are we supposed to do, now? Don't we have a murderer in our hands?"

"Yeah... you're right- wait! Is he looking at us?" The man looked like he was looking their way, but then his eyes averted back to his trunk, trying to get the bag in.

"I don't think he saw us." Kate said, sighing in relief.

"Okay, so what do we do? If it is a murderer, then we have to do something. We can't just let this situation go, what if he never gets caught?"

"You're right. We have to think of something, quick." Kate started thinking, still watching the man.

"Call 911."

Before she knew it, Oliver was out of the hiding spot running towards the man.

Kate spluttered, "You... you idiot!" Then she flipped out her phone and dialed 911, still hiding.

While the phone was still ringing, she watched Oliver run into the man, who was completely struck with shock. The man fell onto the ground, and Oliver took the chance to feel the duffel bag. He froze.

"Hello, 911, where's your emergency?" Kate saw the man stand up and got out a knife he was hiding in his jacket.

"Um-!" Kate looked around and saw a street sign, "Around Robert Dr. near the huge store- OLIVER GET AWAY!" She screamed the end part, seeing how frozen Oliver was, and the person was about to attack him. The man looked startled but, he swung at Oliver, who barely got away. He didn't come towards where I was, he went around the car, deflecting the knife swings.

"What was in there?!" She yelled again. Oliver kept dodging all the attacks towards him, the other man looked very panicked.

"It- it was a... it was a body! I could feel the hands and legs. It felt very much dead." He said, and kept running away from the guy, but again not towards Kate, knowing if he did, then he would put Kate in danger as well.

"We're sending help right now. Could you describe calmly what is happening?" The voice on the other side said, calmly.

"Um- I was walking home with my friend- Oliver, and we saw some suspicious behavior, this man was putting what looked like a heavy duffel bag onto the trunk of a car. And, I- as a mystery freak- suggested it might be a body. And, the man looked a bit panicked as well. So, Oliver- stupidly decided to run towards him, I think to stall his escape. And right now he is dodging the man's attack who is wielding a knife," Kate said a bit rushed, worried about Oliver, who was dangerously getting caught up by the man.

"Okay, we're trying to get there as soon as possible. Do you know the contents of a bag?"

"Oliver checked, and he said-..." Kate shivered, not really thinking it would be true, "it was indeed a very much dead body."

"Okay, please stay calm, you're friend is in a dangerous situation, but if he's still getting away, then it'll be okay. What's your name?"

"I'm Kate. And, the man is closing the gap between him and Oliver. I think Oliver's out of energy."

"Okay, Kate. Stay calm, okay? We'll be there soon. Do you know any self defense? Or any martial arts?" Just as she asked that, Kate saw Oliver trip over the string of the duffel bag, and stumble to the ground. She could see the man's malicious smile.

Without thinking, Kate ran towards the two. Her phone forgotten, thrown towards the man. It hit him on the head. She ran closer, and tripped him over with her hand around his wrist- with the knife- in a tight grip. Twisting his arm back, he got pushed towards the ground with her sitting on him.

Kate panted heavily, her adrenaline dropping.

"Get off me-!" The man under her growled.

Kate snorted, her heart rate now slowing back to normal, "And let you kill me? No thanks." The man stayed quiet.

She heard ruffling come from in front of her. Looking up, she say Oliver getting up, "Thanks, you saved me there."

Kate let out a long breath, "I saved the both of us. After killing you, he'd probably go for me."

Oliver smiled at her, "That was so crazy. If you hadn't thought of it being a dead body, we'd be letting a killer get away."

She rolled her eyes, "You stupid idiot. You literally ran at the guy without even thinking- Wait! The call! Get my phone! Is it still working?"

Oliver looked around, then he looked like he spotted something, "There it is."

While he was getting the phone, Kate pried the knife off the man's hand, with her right hand still around his wrist in a death grip. After getting a hold of the knife, she threw it behind her. Clattering, it landed a few safe feet away from both of them.

"It's cracked, but it still works!" Oliver said, then put it on loud speaker.

"Hello?" He spoke into it, coming closer to Kate.

"Are you Oliver? Is everything alright? Help will be there in less than a minute." Right as she said that, they heard sirens coming closer.

Oliver snorted, "Too late. He's under control. I almost died."

"We are deeply sorry. So, he's under control? Not a danger, anymore?"

Oliver looked towards me and said, "Nope. Kate has him under her with his arm twisted to his back."

As Oliver said this, Kate realized his other arm. She panicked for a split second, when she realized it was laying under his stomach, probably getting crushed.

They heard a heavy sigh of relief come from the other end of the line. "That's good. Could you be specific to where you are specifically?"

"Um- this is difficult to explain. We're near Dilly-Dally, you know that big wall around it? Well, just around the corner, there's a dark parking area, and we're there."

"Okay, we'll be there in a sec."

After a few seconds, they could hear a car approaching the area, with flashed of red and blue.

"They're here," Oliver said into the phone.

"Okay, thank you. Hope your night gets better!" Then the line went dead.
