Goodbye
The next day was what seemed to reflect what the rest of my life here would be like. Literally.
At least there weren't any romantic relationships allowed, so I didn't have to put up with any couples smooching up a storm. I had discovered that if you seemed nice enough to the lunch ladies, you could sweet talk your way into a better cooked meal. I'm not quite sure if that information was necessary.
After breakfast that morning I was walking around the courtyard (if you can even call it that) when I heard a familiar melody, just like the one I had heard yesterday.
I darted over to the wall and sat down in the same spot as yesterday. The music stopped.
"You're back?" I asked.
"Yes......" It replied.
"I'm glad...."
"Good....."
I sat there for hours just listening to the sweet tune his guitar released. I took it straight to my heart, but I couldn't get attached to it, I would die soon, what's the point?
Eventually the alarm rang out signaling it was time for lunch, and I quickly ran over to get to the front of the line. I had thought about saying goodbye, but The words wouldn't come, so I didn't.
I had gone back after lunch, but the player had left.
That night the song he played echoed in my head, over and over again. It seemed I woke up too soon, the sun wasn't up yet, and the music was gone. I looked around the room and spotted Dottie, scrolling through something on her phone.
"Dottie." I whispered, she dropped her phone on her face.
"Yeah? Oh, Aphmau!" She grinned.
"What's up?"
"I couldn't sleep....... Just looking through some old photos......"
"That's nice."
"Aphmau....... Have you ever lost a friend?"
The question took me aback for a moment before I could reply.
"Yeah, when I was forced to come here.... Why?"
I heard her sniffle.
"I've been friends with Daniel and Rylen for most of my life, and tomorrow I won't have them...." I could tell she was starting to cry. I hopped out of bed and ran to comfort her.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Daniel and Rylen.... They're going to be put down tomorrow......" She sobbed.
What?!
"So they aren't here to die naturally?!"
"For us werewolves, it's a little different. When we get the virus, it a lot more deadly and contagious, so we're treated like any other dog, we get put down, because the death by virus for us is said to be extremely painful, whereas, for you humans, you feel almost nothing...."
"Wow...... That's......"
"Don't worry about us, it's normal...." She started crying again.
"What am I gonna do without them!"
Her crus rang in my ears, this was terrible.
The next morning I woke up to find my three roommates gone. I rubbed my eyes and looked around, but before I saw anything, I heard it all.
Dottie!
I grabbed a jacket and threw it on before running outside to see Daniel and Rylen getting dragged away, and Dottie getting beaten by a guard.
"Hey!" I growled as I ran over and punched him in the face.
"That's my friend!"
I should have known that would only earn me a beating myself, but I didn't care.
Dottie got up and ran after Daniel and Rylen, only to have a heavy iron door shut in her face. She ran over to the window on the side of the building and started banging on the glass, I guess they knew how to make things werewolf proof here. Her tears stained her face. I admit I let out a few tears myself, I hadn't known Daniel and Rylen for long, but seeing Dottie like this, when she was always so positive and cheerful, was heart wrenching.
Inside the people strapped them down to surgery tables and grabbed syringes. Dottie kept crying out, they echoed throughout the camp.
Just as they were about to inject it I grabbed Dottie's head and turned her away before she could see, but I saw it all.
The needles were injected into their necks and they started writhing in pain. I saw their mouths fill up with bubbles and blood. Their skin turned pale, their eyes glazed over and it was over in and instant. They just stopped moving. Just like that.
I turned my attention back to Dottie, who was weeping openly into my hoodie. I tried my best but she couldn't take and ran off to some secret place. I started to cry. I just broke down right there at the window. I sat there for awhile before some guards attempted to escort me away. For which they got several punches in the nose, and before they could get me back, I had run off.
