A final call

As the sun rose over the hilltops, we set out for our first adventure, our first stop.
The road side diner.
I hate to admit it, but I had never been to a diner before, and now with the epidemic breaking out and a bunch of restaurants going out of business, diner have risen from the ashes, figuratively and literally, and become more popular.
We walked inside and Aaron smiled.
"Yes! I have service here! Is there anyone you want to call? Family? Friends?"

I nodded and took the red phone from him, I had so many calls to make so I started with the one I was most eager for. It was a weekend, meaning Katelyn didn't have volleyball, meaning she would be sitting in her room staring at the ceiling, and before you ask why I would think something like that, trust me, Katelyn's my best friend, she does that every weekend.
I dialed the number and held it to my ear.
She picked up and a wave of relief washed over me.

"Hello?"

"Hello? Katelyn?"

"Hold on, is this some sort of cruel joke? I just get home from the funeral service for my best friend, and now someone is calling me portending to be her?! What the hell is wrong with people these days!"

"Katelyn, chill, it's me, Aph! It's really me! Your stupid potato!"
I could hear her jaw drop.

"Aphmau?!?!!?!?!?!?!!"

"Yes Katelyn, it's really me."

"But you said you were gonna die!"

"Great talking to you too!"
I heard stifled laughter coming from FC's general direction.

"Sorry, I just wasn't expecting my best friend to call me from the grave!"

"First, I'm not dead yet, but I will be soon, that's why I called you, and second, as much as I would love to talk to you all day, this isn't my phone and I still have to call my mom, so, remember me...." Before she could respond I hung up and dialed my moms number, but before I pressed call, she called me.
How you might ask?
I have no idea.

"Hello?" I answered.

"Excuse me but, you wouldn't happen to know about a girl named Aphmau would you?"

"No.... Why do you ask miss?"

"It's just that, she was really sick and I just got a call from where she was saying she had run away, she has black hair and golden eyes, have you maybe seen her?"

"Yes I think I have, but she's long gone now... I'm sorry..."

"Oh.... Okay.... Thank you anyways...."
She hung up.

"Why didn't you tell her it was you?"
FC asked.

"It's best she didn't know... She'd come looking for me, but by the time she would find us, it'd be way to late..."

"Well, how about this!" He said, trying to lighten the mood. "How about we grab some grub and head out? I know a great camping spot next to a lake!"

I smiled, indicating that I agreed, that sounded like a great idea.
