Chapter XXVIII - End Of The Line
Alice had many questions. She could not rest that night. Her husband was sleeping sound-fully beside her. She stood up from her bed and made her way downstairs to brew herself a cup of hot tea. Taking out her phone she searched through her contacts. She had to call FP, there was an unsettling thought on her mind.
He grunted into the phone, "can't I have a peaceful evening without you also calling me?"
Alice scoffed, "you sound hurt."
"Surprisingly you are correct for the first time, what do you want Alice?" FP asked.
"Remember when Betty was kidnapped as a baby-"
"This again, Alice, you can't blame the Serpents-"
Alice cut him off, "no, I just want to know why. Why were we targeted?"
FP sighed, "Alice, you and Hal are rich, you do the math."
"It doesn't make sense FP, the doors were all locked, and so were the windows," she shook her head. Suddenly the lights came on and Alice saw Hal standing in the doorway dressed in a robe. She quickly hung up.
He took out a cup from the table and poured himself some tea, sitting down in front of her, "who was that?"
"FP Jones, I was asking him about the night Betty was kidnapped," Alice put down her phone.
Hal looked away annoyed that his wife brought up the subject again, "let's not talk about it, soon enough everything will be okay and Betty will be home."
Alice shook her head, "how do you know Hal? Why are you so confident in everything?"
"Alice," he stood up and hugged her, "let's go to bed."
In the morning Hal left for work, Alice couldn't find peace, she couldn't even find a way to get her daughter out of prison. When she got a call from the local police district Alice was worried, they called her without explaining why she needed to come in. To her absolute shock she found FP Jones locked up instead of her daughter. Waiting for the officers to leave them alone, Alice approached him with a smile.
"Don't gloat, I saved your daughters life," FP said.
Alice crossed her arms, "I am grateful, but where is she?"
"Safe. I am not telling you where she is, you're a terrible mother," he said.
"Excuse me?" Alice was shocked that he had the nerve to say that to her.
"You know what you did," FP turned away from her.
Alice was confused, "and what exactly did I do?"
"You hired Rats people to attack your own daughter, all so my boy could come here and save her and then they can kill him instead," FP yelled at her.
Alice stepped back, she didn't do it, she would never think of putting her daughter in danger.
Betty woke up in Jughead's arms, a place she missed being. The second she got up, Betty heard someone knock on the trailer door. Slowly crawling out of Jughead's grip, she strolled to the door and opened it. Betty smiled at first, but then confusion overtook her features. How could he be here? How did he know she was here? Betty opened the door wider and let him in.
"Dad, what are you doing here?" She asked him.
Hal smiled, "where else would you be?"
He was right, but that still didn't explain anything. She sat down at the kitchen table and he sat down in front of her. He looked the trailer up and down, clearly judging where she was living. Hal turned back to her with a smile that concealed disgust, "why don't you come back home."
"Dad," Betty shook her head, "I belong here. You remember how I always told you that I feel different that there is something wrong with me? Well here, I don't feel that way."
Hal sighed, "I guess I can't convince you can I? At least come home and say goodbye to your mother and me, pick up some of your things?"
He sounded convincing, "promise me mom won't lock me up?"
Hal laughed, "if she does, I will personally hold her down as you run away."
Betty followed him out the door, he was her father after all, and the most sensible one out of their family. Getting into his car she watched him stop mid way, "I forgot my bag in the trailer, wait here a minute."
She watched him go back in and fastened her seat belt, ready for the journey. Her father was taking a little long, something began to boil inside of her, some sort of worry. She should have told Jughead where she was going, but she didn't want to wake him up and there was no use going back in. She heard the trailer door opened and watched her dad walk out, no bags in his hands.
He got into the car and started the engine, smiling at her. "Where is the bag?" Betty asked with an innocent smile on her face, but that just made her worry more.
Hal smiled back and started driving, "it wasn't there, must have left it at the office."
It didn't take long to get back to their house. The ride itself was silent, Hal was very focused on the road and she was surprised that he didn't even ask her about prison or the night before. She knew that her dad was a busy man, but he was generally interested in everything, a concerned parent would generally be interested in how their daughter got out of prison.
When they got there the house looked cold and vacant, she was afraid that her mother was not going to let her go back, but perhaps her mom would be more understanding this time. She walked in through the door and her mother was sitting on the couch near the fireplace, her body turned away from the front door.
"Hey mom," Betty said, and Alice turned around abruptly.
Hal walked in after her and Alice stood up. She watched him put his keys down on the table and hug Betty by the shoulders. Alice forced herself to walk up to them, but she was still a distance away. Betty felt strange, her mother usually didn't act so distant, and her dad was cautious too. Stepping away from her dad she watched as her mom pulled a gun from behind her and point it at her father.
"Mom, what the hell?" Betty yelled.
"Alice you're crazy!" Hal yelled too.
Alice cocked the gun, "I am crazy? You kidnapped our baby, you hired those men to hurt her in prison, all to control our family?"
Hal sighed, "I was hoping you wouldn't find out in this way."
Betty looked back at her dad, "what is she talking about?"
Hal made his way towards the living room couch and sat down, "we are Coopers, they are the Joneses. We don't mix blood. When you were a baby I had to make sure that your mom was dedicated to me, so I tested your loyalty, after Betty was kidnapped you were scared Alice, so you would never leave me, you would always be by my side. Jughead? I had to get rid of him somehow, but things didn't go by plan, so I had to take action."
"What did you do?!" Betty asked, falling down to the floor.
Hal laughed, "he's probably dead by now. Betty you didn't love him, he was just your ticket out of this household."
Tears started pouring out of her eyes, the whole room started spinning and she wanted to throw up, her own father was capable of such cruel things. Falling down to the groundBetty watched as her dad walked up to her mom.
"You can't pull the trigger, Alice, you are not a killer," he caressed her face, tracing down her hand to take the gun away from her.
Betty jumped back up and grabbed the gun from her mother's hand, "well, I am dad." Betty shot him twice, she shot him and didn't even blink. Realizing what she had done, Betty dropped the gun as he dropped down in front of her, dead.
Alice picked up the gun and started wiping away the finger prints. She watched her daughter slowly slouch down to the ground and stare at the dead Hal Cooper in front of her. Betty hated herself, she had killed someone again. Looking back up at her mom with tear filled eyes, Betty took the gun out of her hands and ran out the door. Alice ran out after her calling her name, but Betty got into her father's car and started driving. She had not even gotten her permit yet, but Betty didn't care, she knew how to drive a car, at least a little bit.
She went back to the trailer park, it felt like forever and like she was walking in slow motion until she went inside and ran straight to Jughead's room. He lied on the bed, motionless. Falling down beside him she started crying even harder. This was the end of her world. Pulling the gun up to her temple, Betty cried and squeezed the gun and her eyes. She suddenly felt someone pull the gun away from her head and pull her away from the bed.
Betty ended up in someone's arms, they felt familiar but not quite, she opened her eyes to FP Jones, "are you crazy Betty? Don't go Romeo and Juliet on me."
"My dad-"
"I know," FP rocked her back and forth.
She heard the sound of sirens surround the trailer and a group of premedics rush into the room, checking Jughead's pulse and taking him away into the ambulance.
