98 ~ May

"Brett!" Olivia tries but he ignores her, taking a step towards me.

"Did you?" Brett snaps and I can't help but grimace at the broken sound of his voice, the anger clearly not helping his throat to heal. "Speak Savannah!" He almost yells and I jump.

"Yes!" I exclaim, eyes wide as I watch him.

"Are you fucking stupid?" He snaps and I immediately shake my head.

"George. Let's give them a moment." Olivia says softly, gesturing towards her startled looking husband.

"Olivia..."

"Now George!" She snaps, louder than I've ever heard her before. Her husband stares wide eyed before slowly following her out of the room, leaving Brett and I on our own.

"How could you do that?" He says lowly.

"I wasn't thinking."

"Damn right you weren't thinking!" He snaps, "You could have died!"

"So could you!" I retort and he scoffs.

"It's not just your life Savannah!"

"I..." I falter, knowing that he's right. I shouldn't have gone inside, I had more to protect than just myself. "I know."

"You didn't even think about the baby?" He exclaims, eyes wide, "The extra life you put in danger?"

"Of course I did!" I snap, "But I couldn't leave you in there!"

"Yes you could!"

"No Brett!" I yell back, "I couldn't!"

"You are everything that is important to me Savannah." He hurls the words at me, pacing around the room, "And you put it all on the line."

"You're everything to me!" I yell, admitting the truth out loud. "I couldn't just stand back knowing you were in there!" I continue as he stops to look back at me, "I didn't even stop to think." I admit, tears gathering in my eyes. I'm going to be an awful Mother. "One moment I was outside staring up at the fire, the next I was attempting to pull you out." I choke slightly as a sob makes it's way out.

"Sav..." He breathes out, voice quieter as he watches me.

"I wasn't in there long at all." I say, "I'm sorry." I mutter, a tear finally escaping and trailing down my face. He exhales, reaching his arms out towards me.

"Come here." He says, his voice croakier than before. I don't hesitate, throwing myself into his arms as he wraps me into him. He stinks of smoke and hospital, but I don't mind, the feel of his familiar muscular arms all I'll ever need. He rests his head on top of mine and I smile into his chest at the feeling.

"You forgive me?" I mumble against him.

"No." He replies, his voice defeated, "I'm still fucking angry at you for putting yourself and our baby's life in danger."

"Your what?"

Excellent. This is just what we need.

I go to pull out of Brett's arms but he stops me, grabbing hold of my waist and forcing me to stand beside him.

"Dad." Brett greets, his voice stoic. My heart is immediately pounding against my rib cage at the sight of the furious Mr Winters.

"What did you just say?" George queries, crossing his arms across his chest.

"George!" Olivia exclaims, popping up from behind her husband and grabbing onto his arm, attempting to pull him out of the room.

"Did you just hear him?" George retorts, wrenching his arm away from his wife, "A fucking baby?"

"Yes I heard!" Olivia exclaims, her voice a little weak, "Congratulations!" She smiles at me. She doesn't admit that she knows, she doesn't admit that she's been making sure I'm okay for weeks. I can see the panic in her face at this very moment and her desperate pulling on his arms. It's obvious, she's scared of his reaction.

"You're happy about this?" George snaps at her, "How can you be happy?"

"Because she..."

"This is the reason you're back together?" George turns his attention to his son, eyes blazing as he ignores his wife.

"Partly." Brett admits, grip tightening on my waist.

"Partly?" George smirks as he glances towards me, "You fucking knocked her up because you don't know how to keep it in your pants so now you've decided to do the right thing."

"You better shut your fucking mouth!" Brett attempts to growl out as he takes a warning step towards his Father, letting of of my waist but keeping a hand on my back. His voice is clearly strained and all I want is for everyone to leave so that my boyfriend can get back to recovering.

"Don't talk back to me boy, it's the truth!" George yells, taking a step closer.

"No it isn't!" Brett snaps.

"George, this isn't the time or the place." Olivia tries, grabbing hold of his arm once more.

"Brett, please..." I plead, reaching up to his shoulder.

"Get off of me Olivia!" George snaps, wrenching himself away from his wife.

"I'd like you to leave." Brett says lowly, his hand grabbing hold of the one I've placed on his shoulder and removing it.

"I'm not going anywhere!" George snorts, "You're going to tell me what you plan to do."

"What?"

"The fuck does that mean?" Brett attempts to yell, his arm wrapping back around my waist.

"Are you keeping it?" George asks and I hear Brett suck in a wheezy breath beside me.

"Yes!" I exclaim, moving to take a step forward before Brett pulls me back.

"Of course they are!" Olivia snap at her husband, lightly shoving him in his chest.

"There are options Savannah..."

"Get out!" Brett explodes, letting go of me and flying towards his Father, "Get the fuck out!"

"George, let's go!" Olivia orders, stepping in front of Brett as I stay rooted to the spot, eyes wide whilst watching the drama that is unfurling in front of me.

"What is all the commotion?" A Doctor suddenly appears in the doorway.

"They're just leaving!" Brett snaps, his eyes not leaving his Father.

"Mr Winters, you should not be out of bed!" The Doctor lectures, "Please, could you leave?" She asks, turning towards his parents.

"Brett, sit down!" I urge him, lightly shoving him back towards the bed. He reluctantly complies, his eyes still pinned onto his Dad.

"This is not over!"

"George!" Olivia yells, finally pulling him out of the room.

"Yes it is!" Brett retorts as I glance around to see his parents disappear from sight.

"Please settle down Sir." The Doctor orders and Brett finally collapses back onto the bed, lying down and yanking the blankets back over him as I try to help.

"Brett..."

"I'm still angry with you." He says, finally looking at me as he rests his head on the pillow.

"I know." I reply softly, slouching back down in the chair beside his bed.

*~*~*

Three hours later I wake up with a start, feeling the smoke feel my lungs as I shoot upright and looking over at the bed, immediately calming at the sight of Brett. For a moment I thought we were back in there, no escape from the deadly fumes...

"You okay?" Brett asks.

"You shouldn't be talking." I retort and he shakes his head.

"You're not dodging my question that easily." He replies slowly and I roll my eyes. "Did you have a bad dream?"

"Yeah."

"Want to talk about it?"

"I was back in the fire." I shrug, looking away from him. "I couldn't get us out."

"Come here." Brett says and I shake my head.

"I don't think I'm supposed..."

"Come here!" He orders and I hesitantly get up and sit on the edge of the bed. Grabbing hold of me he pulls me down to lay beside him as I squeal, placing my hands on his chest. "We're okay baby. We made it out." He says softly. "All of us."

It's hard to describe how I feel at this moment. Attempting to understand and comprehend that we both made it out of the fire alive is tough, allowing myself to relax and believe that it's real is impossible.

Yet here we are, Savannah Hurst lying up against Brett Winters as he runs his hands through her hair, her hand on his chest.

She never wanted him, she never saw the attraction of the high school football captain. She wasn't drawn in by his popularity or the cliché's that surrounded it. Somehow he worked his way into her heart, tainting it with his attitude and good looks.

And now? Now he's my high school sweetheart, my college romance, my baby Daddy. The boy I never want to live without.

We've had one crazy adventure, one that has torn us both into shreds at every turn, but we're here now, both safe, both happy.

I wouldn't have it any other way.

Because somehow, somewhere down the line, I've fallen in love with the popular jock with the bad, playboy attitude. I fell for him years ago, I can't even pinpoint when it was, but I've never got over it, never managed to climb back out of that hole. I'm stuck there, and I never want to leave.

"I love you." I say quietly before biting my lip at the silence that follows.

"What was that?" Brett replies, grabbing hold of my arms and sitting me upright. With one hand he grabs my chin, turning me back to face him. I can't read him, his emotions hidden as his blue eyes burn into mine. I take a deep breath.

"I love you Brett."

"You do?" He replies, slight disbelief showing on his face.

"Of course you great idiot!" I exclaim. How can he not know that?

"I love you too." He smiles and I feel my eyes widen. He does? He really does? Me?

"You do?"

"Of course you idiot!" He smirks and I can't help the giggle that slides out of my mouth as he pulls me down to kiss him.

I feel like my heart is about to burst out of my chest, happiness flooding through me as he clutches me to him. I've never felt this secure, this safe, this content and I never want to feel any different, ever again.

I'm in love.

*~*~*

"So where are you going to live?" Brett asks as he passes me a chip two hours later.

"I don't know." I pout, sitting at the end of his bed as we chat. Our entire apartment was, as expected, destroyed. Nothing is left, not even the gorgeous necklace that Brett bought me all the way back in college.

"You can move in with me." He points out.

"Becky and I will have to look for somewhere else." I say, choosing to ignore his words.

"Don't ignore me." He smirks and I raise my eyebrows.

"We've had this discussion before." I sigh.

"Things have changed."

"Nothing has changed." I retort. I mean, that's a lie.

"Nothing has changed?" He scoffs, "You literally don't have a home."

"Alright. That changed." I admit, "I still have Becky."

"She can move in too if you want."

"You'd let my best friend move in with us?" I exclaim, eyes wide as I look over at him. Where the hell did I find this man? He's so caring, considerate and so damn accommodating that I just want to throw my arms around him right now and tell him I'll live with him every damn day for the rest of my life.

"It's not ideal, but..."

"You're crazy." I smile and he grins back at me, "No!" I answer once more, shaking my head as he exhales in frustration.

*~*~*

Walking down the corridor I glance down at the room key in my hand to double check the number. Becky had bagged us a cheap room for a few nights so that we can figure out what to do from here.

I wanted to stay at the hospital but Brett insisted that I leave and get some decent sleep. After arguing for half hour I finally gave in so that he could let his voice rest.

Stopping in front of room 872 I shove the key into the lock and push the handle down, leaning my body onto the door to open it. I want nothing more than to lay down on a soft bed and shut my eyes for six hours.

Then I'll go straight back to the hospital and sit beside Brett, making sure I'm there when he wakes up.

Taking a step into the room I let the door shut behind me, my eyes instantly falling on my naked best friend, pinned up against the window as Ellis furiously slams into her from behind.

"Oh my god!" I scream, turning around as I hear Ellis fall to the floor, Becky squealing. Grabbing hold of the door handle I wrench it open and fly back out into the hallway, desperate to escape this room and gouge my eyes out so that I never have to see that ever again.

Fucking hell!
