95 ~ Month Thirty: May
It's been a long day, Eric constantly in my ear about how one of my staff isn't competent enough to make the trip to Chicago.
They literally have to jump on a plane and deliver some swatches of fabric and paperwork to a client's house. A monkey could do it.
I don't know why the package can't just be posted, but hey, apparently that's not the Tommy Ross way.
I know what Eric is after, he wants me to go instead but I'm not doing it. I don't even like this damn job, I'm hardly going to drop everything and fly across the country for no good reason. If Jenny wants to go, to 'see the beautiful sights of the windiest city' then she can be my guest.
I've only got half an hour left until the end of the working week and then I can go home and stuff my face with junk food until Monday, all the while somehow figuring out how I'm going to tell Eric that I'm pregnant.
Maybe I'll just quit.
I wish! No-one will hire a pregnant lady who's due for maternity leave in five months, it's hardly a good investment. I'll just have to put off finding my dream career for a bit longer.
Attempting to focus on my laptop screen I attempt to decipher what Tommy has said in his monthly email that he sends to the company on the upcoming fashion.
"Savannah?" My head shoots up at the sound of my name, eyes falling onto the tall, statuesque Mrs Winters as she hovers in the entrance to my office.
"Olivia!" I exclaim, eyes widening as I stand up. She's here? At my place of work? Why?
"Please sit!" She smiles, waving her hand at me, "I hope you don't mind that I just turned up!" She walks over, gracefully sitting down in the seat opposite.
"Not at all!" I return her smile, "How are you?"
"I'm very well thank you." She replies, "Just thought I'd check on you, I know that pregnancy can be a hard time."
"It is." I agree, sitting back in my chair slightly.
"I found it hard both times, it's always nice to have someone to talk to." Olivia says, "I remember George never understood, always telling me to stop whining."
"Oh! Brett has been very caring." I assure her and her smile widens at the mention of her son.
"I'm glad." She grins, "He's a real gentleman. It's a testament to you."
"Me? You're his Mother!" I exclaim, sitting forward.
"Oh Savannah, that means nothing." She shakes her head, "You were the girl who turned him into a decent man." She declares, "I cannot claim credit for that."
"You have tried your hardest the last few years."
"It's not enough. I can never wipe out the years of neglect." She scoffs.
"I'm sure Brett's thankful for the effort you make now." I assure her and she smiles.
"You are too kind Savannah." She replies just as Eric walks past my office, halting as he takes in the sight of company in my office, immediately retracing his steps.
"Savannah, now is not the time for guests!" Eric snaps before Olivia whirls around to face him, "Olivia Winters!" He exclaims, clearly shocked, his eyes just about ready to fall out. "I'm sorry, I had no idea!"
"Do you talk to all your staff that way?" Olivia immediately retorts, her voice firm.
"I..." Eric stutters, "Of course not."
"Good." She nods at him, "I have a right mind to call in some favors with Tommy after how you just spoke to Savannah."
"I'm sorry Ma'am..."
"Don't Ma'am me!" Olivia scoffs, "Leave Savannah to work in peace!"
"Yes, of course!" Eric babbles before slowly retreating out of the room.
"Wow." I breathe out.
"You need a new Boss." Olivia shakes her head as she looks back towards me. I can't help the smile that spreads across my face.
"He's not so bad." I lie and she shoots me a disbelieving look, "Sometimes anyway..."
"Well, I must head off!" Olivia exclaims, pushing herself out of the chair, "I have a meeting with pretentious ladies who have sticks lodged places we shouldn't speak of!"
"Oh!" I almost choke at her words, never expecting the mighty Olivia Winters to speak ill of her own kind.
"We're choosing the charity for the next Gala." She smiles, "You'll be there I assume?"
"I... I'm not sure." I reply truthfully. Do I even want to go to one of those things again?
"Well, I hope you change your mind. It's been lovely to see you!" Olivia says as I stand up.
"You too!" I grin, surprised by the fact that I mean it.
"If you ever need someone to listen or complain to, I'm here." She reaches out, quickly squeezing my hand before turning away.
"Thanks!" I call after her, somewhat shocked by every conversation I have with Olivia.
The Ice Queen appears to have completely thawed.
*~*~*
Shutting the door behind me I drop my bag to the floor, throwing my keys on the side. I'm so glad that's over with, for another week.
Walking over into my bedroom I pull my blazer and pencil skirt off, grabbing hold of the comfy clothes on my bed and quickly pulling them on. Sitting down in front of my mirror I pull the hair tie out, letting my hair fall down over my shoulders and grabbing my hair brush, beginning to brush it through, slightly marveling at the length it's gained over the last five months.
I haven't had it cut since before Christmas and I'm not sure why. During my second year of college I cut it way shorter, desperate for a change. I had always wanted lengthy hair like my Mother, but Brett also loved it long and I needed everything that reminded me of him to be gone. That era of my life was over.
I guess now it's back.
I can't help but smile at the thought of him as I continue to brush.
The grin quickly falls as I remember how I left things between us; a simple no at the basketball court followed by him driving me back to Elle's, both of us engaging in little more than polite conversation.
I hurt his feelings, I know that. But moving in together? We're barely even back together and he wants to jump in, head first with no life jacket to save either of us.
I live here with Becky and I love it.
"Sav?" Talk of the devil.
"Yeah?" I reply walking over to my bedroom door and glancing out. "Wow!" I exclaim at Becky, a black halterneck top and denim skirt adorning her figure.
"Thanks babe!" She grins, "I'm off out!"
"With Ellis?" I smirk and she rolls her eyes.
"Maybe!"
"Are you two together now?"
"Hell no!" She exclaims loudly, "Just spending time together."
"How much time together?" I retort.
"Some..." Becky mutters. They're together, they just won't admit it. Stubborn idiots.
"Have fun." I smile.
"Thanks!" She grins, "What are you going to do?"
"I'm thinking a date night with Netflix." I smile and she laughs.
"Why don't you message Brett? Get yourself some chill to go with it!" She smirks and I roll my eyes.
"Goodbye Becky."
"Bye!" She grins, grabbing hold of her purse and making her way to the door. With a quick wave my way she exits, the door slamming behind her and leaving me in eerie silence.
I always knew those two would eventually give into each other. Granted, I thought it would be a one and done kind of thing, but hey, I'm pleasantly surprised! Maybe Becky and Ellis really are meant for each other.
Slouching down onto the couch I quickly load Netflix as I grab the blanket from the back of the couch and pull it over me. After about five minutes I decide on The Lovely Bones, nothing quite like a creepy old guy murdering a teenager to start off your weekend. Munching through a packet of chips I've just finished them when a harsh, loud knock from the door makes me jump out of my skin, chip crumbs flying everywhere.
Grumbling to myself I sit up and pause the film before standing and stumbling over towards the door, yanking it open with a scowl.
"Wow!" Brett exclaims, "Always so happy to see me!"
"I w-wasn't expecting you!" I manage to stutter, reaching up and attempting to smooth my hair down, my eyes fixed on his perfect appearance.
"Is it a problem?" He raises an eyebrow.
"No, of course not!" I exclaim, stepping back and gesturing for him to enter, "Come in!"
"I brought some cupcakes." He grins, holding up a small brown bag.
"You did?" My eyes widen as he hands the gift over.
"Yeah."
"Thanks!" I grin, immediately tearing into the bag and pulling out a chocolate cake.
"Anytime." He smirks as I bite into it, "How was work?"
"Awful." I reply honestly.
"We've got to get you out of there." Brett replies, slouching down onto the bar stool.
"No can do." I shrug, "No-one is going to hire a pregnant lady." I point out, "I don't even know what I want to do."
"Maybe." He replies, grabbing hold of me and pulling me between his legs, "But I don't want you spending your days somewhere that you hate."
"I'll be alright." I reply softly as he reaches up and tucks a lock of hair behind my ear.
"I saw Becky an hour ago."
"You did?"
"I was at Ellis'." He explains, as I take the final bite of the cake. "I never would have guessed they would be a perfect match for each other."
"Me neither." I grin, wrapping an arm around his neck as his hands rest on my ass.
"She told me you might want some company. Something about how you were having sex withdrawals." Brett smirks, "Luckily I was already on my way over."
"Really?" I scowl, raising an eyebrow at his grin.
"Your best friend said it."
"Of course she did."
"She also told me to ask about Oliver."
"Excuse me?" I almost squeal, stepping away from him, my eyes wide. She did what?
"She said I should know why you and him broke up." He shrugs, the smile falling from his face at my reaction, a wary look taking over.
"Why is she such a shit stirrer?" I breathe out, reaching up and running a hand through my hair. Fantastic.
"What?" Brett replies, "Does this guy mean something to you?"
"No!" I quickly shake my head, "Not at all."
"Then why would Becky tell me..."
"Because she thinks it's hilarious."
"What?"
"You don't need to know why we broke up." I declare, shaking my head as he stands up, grabbing onto my arm and pulling me against his chest.
"Are you serious? Why are you hiding something from me?"
"I'm not!" I insist and he raises an eyebrow.
"Then tell me."
"Oliver and I dated a few months before Christmas." I admit, "I said something when we were about to have sex which had him running for the hills."
"Good." Brett scoffs as I step away, "What did you say?"
"Brett."
"No, come on, you have to tell me!"
"I just did." I exclaim, "I said Brett!" I reveal, watching as a smirk appears on his face.
"You did what?"
"Please, can we just forget..."
"You said my name?" Brett laughs, his eyes glinting with amusement, "You cock-blocked yourself?"
"Yes."
"Damn, Hurst." Brett grins, pulling me back towards him, "That's good to know." He says huskily, lowering his mouth to place kisses along my collarbone.
"I bet it is." I roll my eyes, pushing away from him, "Stop smirking!"
"I can't."
"Unbelievable."
"I'm never going to let this go." Brett shrugs and I grimace, knowing that he's telling the truth. Why did Becky do this? Didn't she know that the mighty Brett Winters doesn't need anymore of an ego boost?
"I didn't expect you would."
"Have you given any thought to my offer?" He asks, changing the subject as he reaches out and tugs me closer once more. "Of moving in."
"Brett, I said no." I reply, stepping away out of his legs.
"Initially." He scoffs.
"What? You thought I'd just come home and change my mind?"
"Maybe!"
"Why the hell would I do that?" I snap slightly.
"We're back together now, we're starting to..."
"We literally kissed and made up a week ago!" I remind him and he runs a hand through his hair.
"So?"
"I'm not rushing into anything!"
"So what? We're just going to date?"
"That's exactly what we're going to do." I nod and he shakes his head.
"I'm not happy with that."
"It's not all about you!" I lash out and he raises an eyebrow.
"I am missing out on everything!"
"What?"
"I missed the first time the baby kicked!" He raises his voice.
"I haven't felt a kick yet." I retort and his eyes widen.
"You haven't?"
"No!"
"Well I'll still miss it because I'm never here!" He argues and I roll my eyes.
"You're here right now!"
"So you want me to move in with you?" He smirks.
"What? Definitely not!" I scowl.
"What is your problem?"
"I don't want to fuck this up again Brett!" I snap, "This is it, the absolute last chance for us! I can't mess it up!"
"Us living together won't mess it up!" He insists and I shake my head at him.
"It might do."
"How?"
"You leaving towels all over the bathroom floor for starters!"
"That'll be breaking point for you?" He scoffs.
"It might be!" I argue, "These hormones give me all kinds of mood swings."
"You're being ridiculous." He mutters.
"I'm happy living here." I shrug, crossing my arms across my chest. I notice his eyes drift lower at the action, having unintentionally pushed my cleavage together. The comfy low cut top doesn't seem like a good idea anymore.
"I'm not taking no as an answer." He replies, taking a step towards me.
"Yes you are." I retort and he smirks, my feet seemingly glued to the floor.
"No I'm not." He says, his voice huskier now as he stands inches from me, his glittering, mischievous eyes staring down at me.
"You're not forcing me to do anything Brett!" I say softly as I feel his hand on my waist, the other reaching around to the back of my neck.
"I'll do as I please." He mutters into my ear, his hand moving to sweep my hair away before he lowers his head, gently placing a slow kiss on my neck. I feel my core react to the sudden gesture and automatically lower my shoulder, giving him more access.
"Brett..." I attempt, my words cut off by his hands moving to my ass, grabbing it harshly and pulling me against his body. I immediately feel his hardness through his jeans, gasping as he pulls his head back to glance down at me, lust in his eyes. It turns me on to know that I've already excited him, one admission and one look at the top of my breasts enough.
"What?" He replies, still holding eye contact as I feel his hands move up to cup my breasts, my lower body pressed against his, "You want me to stop?" He asks, smirking at my expression, my mouth opening slightly as he palms me through my top, my nipples instantly hard.
"No." I reply and he grins, immediately smashing his lips on mine.
