87 ~ March
As soon as I wake up I turn over in my bed and stretch out before quickly opening my eyes and flinching away from the bright rays of sunlight that are burning through my curtains.
I'm twenty five.
And pregnant with my ex's baby.
Sighing loudly, I push the blanket away from me and stand up, unsure of how I feel about last night's events, having reached my high pretty quickly, both of us then lying down on my bed, his arm around me as I contently drifted off to sleep.
I slowly make my way over to the door and pull it open, biting my lip as I attempt to figure out what last night meant. It never should have gone that far, this was exactly why we needed to keep our distance, the line has been crossed on too many occasions.
My eyes immediately fall on the figure curled up on the couch, his arm across his face in an attempt to block out the daylight. After taking a deep breath I make my way over towards him and Brett immediately reacts, pulling his hand away as he hears me move, sitting up and shooting me a smile.
"Becky went out." He says quickly as I sink down on the seat beside him.
"Oh." I let out. I bite my lip as I gaze at him, my ex who took it upon himself to stay the night. "You should leave Brett." I mutter and his eyebrows immediately furrow.
"Leave?"
"Yeah!" I nod, tearing my eyes away from his confused expression, "Why did you even stay?"
"You fell asleep and I didn't want to just disappear."
"Disappear? You have no obligation to me Brett." I scoff slightly.
"Yes I do." Brett objects as I stand back up, running my hand across my legs to smooth my shorts down.
"No. You don't."
"It didn't seem like you wanted me gone last night." He retorts, standing up and glaring down at me. I look away from his invasive eyes that are trying to pick me apart and analyse my every decision.
"I had a weak moment." I shrug, "My hormones are all over the place."
"You can't blame your hormones on everything."
"I can." I reply, turning around and walking over towards the kitchen.
"You wanted me last night!"
"So what if I did?" I exclaim, throwing my hands up as I whirl back around to face him, "We need to stop this!"
"Why?" He replies, "We're heading in the right direc..."
"Stop it!" I snap slightly, "We're not heading in any direction Brett!" I say, "We aren't getting back together."
"You're so against it." He shakes his head, resting his arms down on the other side of the counter, "You can't deny that you have feelings for me."
"I don't." I reply quickly.
"Liar."
"Brett, what I have with you is a sexual attraction, nothing more."
"Then why did we spend so much time laughing at lunch yesterday?" He smirks.
"I'm not doing this." I shake my head, opening the refrigerator and grabbing hold of the orange juice. I can't forget what he did, I can't let this baby turn all his wrongdoing into nothing.
"You like me..."
"No I fucking don't!" I suddenly explode, slamming the carton down on the side, "How could I ever fucking like someone who nearly committed murder!"
"I did not..."
"But you could have done!" I cut him off, almost yelling, "So easily." I continue, "You took everyone's lives into your own selfish hands. For what? To secure a million dollar deal?" I mock, unable to stop myself, "Or was it to get Daddy's praise?"
"It wasn't like that."
"Yes it was." I argue, "You took that car. And you drove after you had a drink."
"I know." He bows his head, "That was wrong of me." He says softly, "Nothing I ever say can make up for that."
"No. It can't." I snap, "My parents would be disgusted that I was having a baby with you."
"You don't mean that."
"Nothing you could have ever said, or done, would have been worse than you driving that night." I spit out, "I mean every word."
"I made a fucking mistake!" Brett snaps, "Don't you dare say your parents wouldn't have been happy you were pregnant." He runs his hands through his hair, "It's an innocent fucking baby." He snaps, turning away from me, a slight look of disgust running through his features. He's right. This baby is pure, perfect, and it's my fault just as much as his that it exists. Lashing out at him doesn't help anything. What's wrong with me?
"I'm sorry..." I manage to stutter out and he slouches down onto the side slightly.
"Don't say shit you don't mean just to hurt me Sav." He mutters, "You did this to us, as much as I did." I'm sorry, what? I don't think I'm the one who got into a car whilst drunk and drove into a wall.
"Get out." I order.
"No."
"Brett, get out!"
"I'm not leaving, because I fucked up five years ago and now you won't listen to fucking reason." He raises his voice slightly.
"You fucked up more than once." I laugh lowly, scowling at him. I'm done with this.
"Seriously? We're doing this again?" He rolls his eyes and I see red.
"Fucking cheating on me with my best friend! Going out for date with Ashley!" I explode, "Oh, should I remind you of the time you told everyone I worked at Aphrodite's Palace?"
"I thought we were passed all this?" He snaps.
"I guess not!" I retaliate as he narrows his eyes at me, "Just throwing you a little reminder of how much better I am than you."
"How much better you are?" He scoffs, standing up straight, "What about when you cheated on Haydon, Miss High and Mighty?" He smirks in anger, "Was that you being better than me?"
"That was a mistake." I snap quickly.
"Clearly." He snorts, "So were all mine."
"You were a mistake." I shoot back.
"Well, I'm starting to believe you were too."
"Good. I'm glad we agree on something." I reply, my voice strangely calm. "Can you get out now?" I point towards the door.
"You are unbelievable." Brett shakes his head at me, his expression hard.
"What?"
"You throw yourself on me at Christmas and now you can't even look at me?"
"That's right." I shrug, "I was horny and you were an easy target. Don't flatter yourself."
"I know you're lying."
"I'm not!" I snap, "You are still the same arrogant dickhead from high school." I continue, "Why don't you give Ashley a call?"
"Fuck off Savannah!" He finally yells, "Why don't you just sleep with Haydon if you're that against me?"
"I already have." I retort, immediately regretting it as I watch his face clouds over with a darkness I've never seen before.
"What?" He mutters out, his voice low. Shit.
"Brett..."
"You slept with Haydon?"
"Yeah." I admit, quietly.
"Fucking hell!" He snaps, slamming his hand down on the counter.
"It was over a year ago." I try and he shakes his head.
"I'm done."
"What?"
"You've made your feelings perfectly clear." He replies, "I'm done." He says with such finality that for some reason my heart drops.
"Fucking finally." I manage to force out, pasting a smirk on my face, "I'm glad."
"So that's it?" He retorts, taking a couple of steps towards the door.
"That's it." I reply to his back, watching as he tenses, "I'll contact you when the next appointment is booked." I finish and he immediately stalks to the door, wrenching it open and disappearing out of it.
The door shuts with a slam that echoes through my bones and I slowly drop to the floor, my breathing unsteady as I realize what's just happened.
It's for the best... right?
*~*~*
"Aunt Annie!" Danny squeals, running towards me and wrapping his arms around my legs as soon as I shut the front door behind me.
"Hey Danny!" I exclaim, reaching down and lifting him onto my hip. "Cool pyjamas!"
"Thanks." He smiles, "Daddy bought them for me last week."
"I hope you told him that I wanted a pair too?" I grin and he shakes his head.
"No!"
"Yeah! They've got cool planes on!" I point to a couple of them on his stomach as he giggles, "I want some!"
"You're too big!"
"I am not!" I object.
"You are!" He argues, laughing as Elle walks in, smiling at me.
"Time for bed Danny!" She smiles before turning her attention to me. "We weren't expecting you tonight." No, you weren't. For some reason I made the decision that tonight was finally the time to tell her that I'm carrying the Devil's Spawn. Petrified isn't the word.
"Can Aunt Annie tuck me in?" Danny asks, still perched on my hip.
"Of course!" Elle smiles and I grin.
"What story do you want to read tonight kid?" I ask him, walking out the living room and towards the stairs.
"The Ugly Duckling!"
"Again?"
"Yeah!" He exclaims and I grit my teeth as I head towards his bedroom, him chattering in my arms.
Thankfully, he's asleep before I finish the book. I'm getting fed up of reading the same book every time I'm here. You'd think the kid would get bored of it, but no... apparently there's nothing more interesting than the ugly bird who turned into a swan.
Pulling the covers up around him I place the book on the shelf and turn off the light, leaving my little nephew to sleep as I walk back downstairs.
"Hey!" I smile at my sister as I enter the kitchen diner. She immediately turns around, two glasses in her hand.
"I just got off the phone with Aunt Lara." Elle says, placing the glasses on the side.
"Great." I reply, sarcastically, rolling my eyes.
"She's still having problems selling the house in Spain." She informs me, "Steve moved out last week."
"I'm still not surprised that relationship ended." I smirk, unable to control myself, "He was bound to realize what a selfish woman she was at some point."
"Anna!" Elle exclaims, shaking her head at me, "Anyway, is everything okay? Do you want some wine?"
"No thanks!" I smile and she raises an eyebrow. It's not like me to turn down alcohol. "Yeah! Danny went out like a light!"
"I meant with you." She retorts.
"Oh?"
"You were here last weekend Sav. I know you love your nephew but you're never here two weekends in a row." She crosses her arms as she watches me, her eyes scanning my face for answers.
"You got me." I admit, leaning back against the counter.
"I knew it!" She claps her hands, "So what is it? You got a new job? A new boyfriend?"
"Not quite." I manage and she furrows her eyebrows in thought.
"Okay... did you get a pet?"
"No."
"What is it?" She sighs, clearly getting impatient.
Alright, a band aid yeah?
"I'm pregnant."
"What?" She exclaims, eyes wide as her arms drop to her sides. "You what?"
"Knocked up?" I reply, "Bun in the oven? Up the duff?"
"Okay okay! I get it!" She cuts me off, arms raised towards me. "How?"
"Really? You're the one who gave me that talk." I snort and she rolls her eyes.
"You know what I mean!"
"Unintentionally." I try and she shakes her head. She isn't going to let me get away with it that easily.
"That's not an answer." She retorts, "How far along are you?"
"Nearly three months."
"Three months! And you haven't told me before now?" She exclaims, "Wait, doesn't that make it around Christmas time?"
"Yep." I confirm, watching as her brain comprehends what that means, her eyes widening in horrifying realization.
"No!"
"Yep." I confirm.
"Please tell me you didn't!" She grimaces and I looks down at the wooden floor of her kitchen, biting my lip.
"You know I did."
"In that cabin?" She splutters, "Brett Winters!"
"Unfortunately!" I confirm, glancing back up as she grabs hold of her bottle of wine, pouring herself a large glass. She swiftly downs the lot in less than fifteen seconds before filling it up once more.
I stay silent, biting my lip as I let her digest the information. It's something that she probably never expected from her sensible, organized baby sister, yet here we are.
"Does he know?" Elle finally asks.
"Yeah."
"How did he take it?"
"Really well. Better than I am." I admit and she nods slowly.
"Are you going to keep it?"
"Yes!"
"And Brett's okay with that?"
"I think he'd give me one hell of a fight if I wanted to get rid of it." I can't help but smile at the thought, his attitude towards this situation having surprised me since day one.
"Really?"
"He's been amazing about it. He wanted to get back together." I admit and she raises an eyebrow.
"And you don't?"
"No!"
"Are you sure?" She presses and I roll my eyes.
"Yes."
"It was a long time ago Ann." Elle points out.
"I know! That's one of the reasons I'm sure. I don't know him anymore Els." I explain, "And I can't forgive him."
"Anna I know you. You forgave him a long time ago." She argues and I sigh.
"I can't do another relationship with him Els." I say softly and she nods, reaching over and pulling me into a hug.
"Well, you always have Alex and I." She assures, "And Danny."
I do. I have my family, and that's all I've had for the last five years. I don't need Brett and the resulting heartache that always accompanies him. I won't put myself through the inevitable break up again, I don't deserve it and nor does my baby.
