84 - February
And there you have it. Pregnant.
It's been five days since I took the test, five days since I collapsed on the floor in Becky's arms, somewhat happy but mainly scared. I always thought I'd be married before this happened, or at least in a relationship. I hoped that I would have someone who would learn the news with me, clutching my hand as we celebrated, helping with everything at every step of the way.
I wanted my career to be more secure before it happened, know that I could take time away from a job that I love with sufficient money to do so. Hell, I still don't even know what I want to do as a career for the rest of my life. Eric is not the kind of Boss I ever want to tell that I'm pregnant, there will be no understanding, no support. I don't want to work in this industry any longer than I have to, but now I'm stuck! How can I quit this job, knowing that I need to support not only myself, but a tiny helpless bundle of joy?
I thought I'd be more mature by the time it happened. I still feel like a teenager, but then again, I'm starting to wonder whether you ever actually start to feel like an adult?
Sitting in my office I stare at the diary in front of me, frozen in exactly the same position as I have been for the last forty five minutes, unable to concentrate.
A sudden knock sounds from my door way and I glance up, gently swiping my hair away from my face to see who's disturbing my already disturbed thoughts.
"Alice?" I exclaim.
"I just stopped in to pick up my dress." She grins, walking in as I hurriedly sit up straight and slam the diary shut, "I wanted to say hi whilst I wait for Brett!"
"He's picking you up again?" I manage to blurt out.
"Yeah, said he'd be free after his date." She smiles, making her way over and slouching down in the chair across from me.
"Date?"
"Oh yeah, he's back with this Lacey girl." She rolls her eyes. "She's a total nightmare."
"Lacey?" I unintentionally wrinkle my nose up at the name, "As in the cheerleader he used to go out with when he was playing football?"
"The... what?"
"I saw it in the media." I justify quickly and she smirks.
"Oh." She nods slightly, "Yeah." She grimaces, "Apparently she wants to give it another go."
"I see."
"I'm sure he won't go for it!" She says hurriedly and I raise an eyebrow. Does Alice think I care? "She was really needy..."
"Alice! It's fine."
"I don't believe you." She snorts, "Anytime a girl says something is fine, it isn't!"
"Well, Brett and I broke up over five years ago so..." I remind her, "Believe me, I'm fine." I declare before standing up and grabbing hold of the folders on my desk, piling them up and shoving them into my desk drawer.
"But you saw him at Christmas."
"What?"
"He told me." She shrugs. He did what? "At the same resort?" She continues, "Surely that brought up some old feelings!"
"Alice, I have no intentions to date your brother." I advise her, shaking my head.
"Damn it." She groans, "You're still the best one!"
"Thank you." I can't help but chuckle slightly as she grins.
"He doesn't have a good track record."
"Has he..." I trail off, "Had many... since?"
"I thought you didn't care?" She accuses, smirking at me.
"I really don't. Forget I said anything!" I mutter, walking over to my filing cabinet and stuffing some paperwork inside.
"Lacey was the first girlfriend after you and that was three years later." She declares, "They dated for a year." She continues, "Over this last year he's gone out with a couple of girls, but no biggie."
"Why... did him and Lacey split?"
"She was always calling him, always wondering where he was and what he was doing!" She rolls her eyes, "He got fed up."
"Why is he meeting her for lunch then?" I scoff, shaking my head as I walk back over and slouch down in my chair.
"She says she's changed." Alice scoffs, "I smell bullshit!"
"Alice!" I exclaim, "Language!"
"Sav, I'm sixteen, I curse all the time."
"Well you shouldn't!"
"Don't Mother me!" She smirks.
"I wouldn't dream of it." I grin back at her.
"Good!"
"Alice?" Brett suddenly appears in the doorway, running a hand through his hair, black jeans and a navy shirt covering his body.
"Hey Brett!" She greets, turning around in the chair to glance at him.
"Brett." His name falls from my mouth. The first time I've seen him since I found out I'm pregnant with his child, and I have no idea what to say.
"Savannah." He nods towards me in acknowledgment, "How are you?"
"Good." I manage.
"Shall we go?" He asks Alice, clearly slightly agitated.
"Fine." She rolls her eyes, slapping her hands on the arms of the chair and pushing herself up. "Bye Sav!"
"Bye Alice!" I say.
"See you later." Brett shoots me a quick smile before disappearing with his sister.
"Bye!" I call after him.
Well, that went well.
*~*~*
Shoving the carrot into the tub I wipe it around as Becky walks out of her bedroom, glancing over at the messy haired, hoodie clad disaster in the kitchen.
"What is that?" She wrinkles her nose up as she walks over to me.
"Hummus."
"What?" She exclaims, "Why?"
"Baby wants it." I mutter, shoving the carrot into my mouth.
"I'm starting to doubt that the baby is yours."
"Funny!" I retort, as she watches me.
"I didn't think you'd get cravings this early." Becky mutters.
"Well I can't exactly eat ice cream can I?" I counter and she raises an eyebrow.
"You tried it again?"
"Yep." I mutter, grimacing at the memory. Yesterday night I hadn't been able to leave the bathroom for half an hour, head in the toilet for most of it. "First thing I'm gonna do when this is all over is eat a tub of Phish Food."
"Good to see your priorities are in check." She grins and I roll my eyes. "So when are you going to tell Brett?"
"I don't know." I shrug, "I might not."
"What?" She exclaims, "Sav!"
"I'm not with him!"
"It doesn't matter!" She argues, "That is his baby too and he deserves to have the chance!"
"It was supposed to be a one night stand, no strings attached."
"Well it fucking isn't!" She snaps, "Grow up Sav! It's not just about you anymore!"
"Don't tell me to grow up!"
"You have to tell him."
"No I don't!" I object, slamming the hummus down on the counter.
"If you don't tell him, I will." She declares, crossing her arms.
"How dare you!" I almost yell.
"How dare I? You are trying to deprive that innocent baby of a Dad!" She yells back, pointing at my stomach. "How would you feel if you'd never got the chance to know your Dad!"
"Don't go there." I reply in a warning tone.
"I just did." She snaps and I grimace, shaking my head at her as I walk over to my bedroom, slamming the door behind me.
She's right I know she's right, but at the moment everything's raw. I saw him only three hours ago in my office after he finished his date, and now I'm supposed to tell him I'm having his baby?
How do you even do that? He's my ex, someone who was supposed to stay in the past and now, because I couldn't keep my damn legs shut at Christmas and thought it would be more fun to give myself a 'present' I've ended up with the gift that just keeps giving.
Walking over to my dresser I sit down, staring at myself in the mirror as I bite my lip.
Reaching into my jewellery box I gently lift up the necklace that has lain here for just under four and a half years now, the heart glittering in the sunlight. I could never find it in my heart to get rid of it, the evening that Brett gave it to me still clear in my mind.
He isn't just a one nightstand. He never was.
Placing the necklace back in the box I stand up, grabbing hold of a brown coat and whipping it on. Making my way out to the front door I'm thankful that Becky has retreated to her room, knowing that one look from her and I'd lose my nerve once again, instead begging her to raise this baby with me.
I hurry down to the street quicker than I have ever done before, hailing a cab and jumping in before I have time to second guess what I'm doing. Brett needs to know, and he needs to know now. I have waited way too long as it is.
I don't know the address, but merely shouting Brett Winters at the driver is enough, the name famous in this city. My stomach is full of nerves, the butterflies causing nausea to jolt through me, almost as strong as the ice cream that came up last night. Opening the window slightly I attempt to take some deep breaths, reminding myself that I'm doing what needs to be done on a continuous loop.
How do I even tell him? Should I be taking him out to a bar, throwing a few drinks down his throat before I announce it? Or should I just rip it off like a band aid as soon as I walk into his office? Maybe I should just not tell him today, just chat to him about how he is - ease into it and then invite him out for dinner?
No Savannah! You're telling him today!
My mind is so preoccupied with deciding how to approach it that I don't pay any attention to the roads we turn down as we fly through the city.
How the hell is he going to react? He's got a girlfriend right? This is not ideal, this is not what either of us planned for. What if he wants absolutely nothing to do with us? I don't know whether I'd blame him, I'm the one who threw myself on him at Christmas.
"Here you go Miss!" The cab driver exclaims, pulling me out of my daydream with a start. Chucking the money into his hands I throw myself out of the car and onto the sidewalk, glancing up at the skyscraper in front of me, a lump suddenly forming in my throat.
Taking another deep, shaky breath as the cab pulls away I begin to make my way into the building, head held high in an attempt to feign confidence. The entrance is heaving with people and I luckily find it easy to slide next to a tall business man, waltzing past security and making my way to the map of the building on the back wall.
It proves to be a useless mission, the map, for some reason, not explicitly telling me where Brett's office is. Fantastic.
Taking a leap of faith I dive into the elevator at the last minute and press the top floor, reminiscing on how Brett always loved to have a view when he worked, back in college always finding him gazing out over the city, his hands in his pockets. I'd be a liar if I said I didn't used to stand in the doorway of his office and admire him for a few minutes before I announced my arrival.
Stepping out on the top floor I turn right and am immediately faced with his name printed on a large glass door. My hands are shaking as I approach, my nerves worse than they were in the cab. I can hear my heart beat in my ears as I decide to just push the door open, walking in. He looks up as soon as I enter, eyes widening in surprise.
"Savannah?" Brett exclaims, immediately standing up from his desk as I glance around, thankful that he is alone. "What are you doing here?"
"This is awful timing." I blurt out immediately.
"What?"
"You're just getting back with your girlfriend, this is not a good time..."
"My girlfriend?" He cuts me off, his eyebrows furrowed.
"Lacey." I mutter and he smirks.
"Alice tell you that?"
"You went out for lunch with her!" I point out and he shakes his head, walking around his desk to come closer.
"As friends." Brett retorts, "Why is this any business of yours anyway?"
"I have to tell you something." I announce, forcing myself to stay on topic.
"Okay?"
"And I know that this isn't the best time for you, I completely understand if you don't want..."
"Are you trying to get back together with me?" He interrupts, a smirk spreading across his arrogant face.
"What?" I snap, "No!" I shake my head, "Why would you..."
"Because you're asking me about Lacey and saying that you know now isn't a good time?" Brett leans back against his desk as I take a deep breath in. Don't kill him Savannah. You're doing this for your child.
"Brett, I am not here to get back together with you."
"Oh. That's a shame." He says plainly, shrugging his shoulders slightly. I'm sorry, excuse me?
"What?" I splutter, "Are you serious?"
"Maybe." He grins.
"You literally went out on a date four hours ago!"
"So you do want to get back together!" He exclaims, his cocky expression almost overshadowed by his gorgeous expression.
"Never." I snap.
"Then what do you want Savannah? I don't have all day." He retorts abruptly, standing up from his desk and staring down at me.
A band aid, right? Let's go with that.
"I'm pregnant."
