83 ~ February
"Lucy, great work on those reports for the Ashton collaboration!" I exclaim and she grins, glancing up at me as I pass.
"Thanks!"
"Keep it up." I encourage, smiling as she nods. Taking a few steps back towards my office I stop at the sight of the grinning girl in front of me, her outfit looking ridiculously expensive.
"Alice!" I greet, walking towards her.
"Savannah!" She grins, "Hi!"
"Is everything okay?"
"Of course!" She assures, "I just wanted to come here and make sure that everything is okay with my dress."
"Oh! Well, it's not something I deal with but I can call down and see if I can find out." I reply, taking a step towards one of the desks to grab a phone.
"That's okay!" She replies quickly, shaking her head.
"Alice?"
"I've already been down there for the last hour." She admits.
"You have?"
"Yeah!" She shrugs, "I wanted to come and see you."
"Oh!" I exclaim, eyes wide. She what? Why?
"Is that okay?" She asks, looking away from my eyes suddenly.
"Of course!" I smile, spotting Eric walking up behind her.
"Miss Winters?" He asks, clearly curious, "Are you okay? I thought your dress fitting was downstairs?"
"It was." She nods.
"Savannah, what do you think you're doing?" Eric glares at me with disdain.
"I'm just..."
"I came up here to see her." Alice cuts in.
"To see Savannah?" Eric questions, eyebrows furrowed.
"Yeah!" Alice grins, "She and I go way back."
"You do?" He echoes. I struggle to hold back my smirk, my Boss' sudden shock at my apparent famous connections clearly baffling him. I'm sure I'll get an earful from him tomorrow about how I kept this vital information secret.
"Yeah, she used to come over for dinner when I was ten!" Alice continues.
"Oh!" Eric mutters, "I didn't know that."
"I just wanted to say hello to an old friend, please don't hold that against her!" Alice pleads and I raise an eyebrow at Eric's startled expression. This girl sure knows how what she's doing.
"Of course I would never!" Eric assures, his eyes wide. Yeah, right. What a liar.
"Good!" Alice grins at him, "Is Savannah allowed a lunch break?"
"Yes."
"Let's go Sav!" She gestures for me to follow as Eric glances between us, speechless.
"I... Uh..." I stutter as Alice raises an eyebrow, "Okay." I agree, reaching into my office to grab my bag.
"See you later." Alice says to Eric as I return, "Sorry, I didn't catch your name?"
"E-Eric." He manages out, mouth dropping opening slightly in shock at what's happening.
"Bye Eric!" She smiles before turning away.
"One hour Savannah!" He warns and I nod.
"Of course!" I reply flatly. It's not like I normally even take a break for lunch.
"Where should we go?" Alice asks as we walk towards the elevator. "There's this amazing new little Italian restaurant across the street!"
"Uh anywhere..." I manage to stutter out.
"Alright." She shrugs as we get in the elevator and ride it to the ground floor, Alice talking at a hundred miles per hour, chattering on about the various eateries available to us. We leave the building, walking out into the chilly, cloudy day and crossing the street at her insistence.
"Doesn't this place look amazing?" She exclaims as we look at the menu outside the Italian restaurant and I nod slightly before following her inside. "I seem to remember you like your ice cream!"
"I've... I've gone off of it a bit." I mutter.
"How does that happen?" She giggles as we take a seat in the booth by the window.
"No idea!" I mutter in response.
"Well, at least you haven't gone off pizza." She laughs, "Right?"
"Right!" I smile and she grins.
"Amazing!" She exclaims as the young waiter walks over. "Hi, I'll have the Hawaiian pizza and Sav? What do you want?" She asks and I widen my eyes, quickly glancing over the menu.
"Pepperoni please." I smile up at the waiter who nods.
"Thanks!" Alice says, shooting him a mega smile. I notice him blush before he turns away, walking back towards the kitchen. "So how did you start working at Tommy Ross? I never pictured you working in fashion..."
"Alice," I cut her off, "Why... Why did you invite me for lunch?"
"Why not!"
"Alice," I repeat and she sighs, visibly deflating as she slouches down.
"Why does everything have to have a reason?" She mutters.
"We haven't seen each other for over five years."
"So?" She exclaims, "I remember how kind you were. How much you listened to me." She continues, "You didn't talk down to me like most of the people do in my life.
"Brett doesn't." I point out.
"No." She smiles, "But he's not always around." She shrugs, "I was shipped off to some New York private school where all the girls thought they were better than me." She grimaces, "Now I've finally managed to convince Mom that it isn't for me." She explains, "But yet here I am, no friends, and no-one to listen."
"Alice your brother will always listen if you need him."
"I'm not going to talk to my brother about everything!" She shakes her head, "You think he'd tell me to go for it with the boy I have a crush on?"
"Fair point." I laugh.
"I guess I just saw you the other day, and apart from my Mom, and Greta in New York who was my friend for two years before she moved to Italy, I haven't really had any girls to talk to." She shrugs, looking down at the table, "I didn't think there was any harm in us catching up." She mutters, "That's all."
"It's fine Alice!" I assure her, as she looks back up towards me. "I was just curious. I'm happy to talk to you." I grin, "This won't be forever you know?" I remind her, "Once you're eighteen you can choose to do whatever you want!"
"Do you know my parents?" She scoffs.
"Unfortunately." I admit, out loud.
"I'll never be free." She pouts and I shake my head.
"Brett is."
"He's twenty six. It took long enough." She snorts and I can't help but giggle slightly. With that we manage to descend into an easy, free-flowing conversation as she updates me on her current crush, a guy called Nick from her parents' inner circle. Before long our pizzas arrive and we scoff them down pretty fast, both of us enjoying food as much as each other, despite the fact that her Father constantly reminds her that putting weight on is not an option.
Walking back into the office over an hour and a half later we're laughing over one of the pranks that she recently pulled on Ettie as we round the corner, coming face to face with her furious looking brother.
"Brett!" Alice exclaims, immediately straightening up.
"Alice where have you..." He trails off as he realizes who she is with, "Savannah."
"Savannah and I went for lunch." Alice shrugs.
"Lunch?" He retorts, "I got here half hour ago to pick you up."
"Sorry." She shoots him a pleading smile, "We got carried away."
"Whatever. Okay." He mutters, his face showing his clear displeasure over the situation.
"Hey bestie, ready to get out of here and hit that pharmac... oh!" Becky's voice sounds out behind me and I whirl to face her wide eyes. "Brett." She comments, eyes glancing between the three of us.
"Becky." Brett greets her.
"Alice, this is Becky." I gesture between them.
"I've heard so much about you!" Alice grins.
"Likewise." Becky exclaims, grinning slightly as she continues to look between us.
"We should go." Brett mumbles to his sister.
"Alice, I'm so glad I caught you!" Eric announces from behind me, walking around and firmly placing himself between us. "My my, Brett Winters again?"
"Hello." Brett greets, looking as though he wishes to be anywhere else but here.
"This is incredible... both of you here, in my office!" Eric exclaims.
"I really need to get going Alice..."
"Are you sure I can't interest you in some champagne, nibbles?" Eric tries, cutting Brett off.
"No, really..."
"Did you tell him?" Becky hisses in my ear.
"Tell him what?" I whisper back, furrowing my eyebrows.
"That he may be your baby Daddy?"
"Shh!" I hiss, grabbing hold of her and pushing her away from them.
"Lovely to see you both!" Becky exclaims over my shoulder.
"Yeah! It really was." I call out, "Thanks for lunch Alice! I've got to run." I finish before shoving us both into my office and slamming the door.
"Wow!" Becky smirks as she stumbles back, "I think you broke my arm." Becky groans.
"Good!" I retort.
"That's not very nice!"
"You nearly outed me in front of them!" I snap, gesturing towards the shut door.
"You've got to tell him sooner or later." She shrugs.
"I haven't even done a test yet."
"Which is what this evening is for!" She grins, "We're going to the pharmacy on the way home."
"Really?" I groan, slouching back against the wall.
"You've left this way too long." Becky snorts, "It's been over a week since you were hurling that ice cream up." She continues, "And don't think I didn't hear you yesterday morning." She points out and I grimace before peeking through my blinds into the office, "Are you waiting until they're gone?"
"Yes!" I retort.
"You're not going to tell him?" She asks and I sigh, letting go of the blind and turning back to face her.
"No!" I shake my head, "Not until I know." I continue before she butts in, "Why would I worry him with the fact I've missed a period." I shrug, "It may just be hormones!"
"And the throwing up?"
"Maybe that ice cream is still in my system." I retort.
"There was nothing wrong with that ice cream."
"I'm on the pill Becky!"
"Sav," She scoffs, "You forget to take it at the best of times, you're telling me that you took it religiously over Christmas?"
"Look, if the test is positive, of course I will tell him." I mutter, "But right now, no!"
"Fine." She relents, leaning back on my desk, giving her feet a break from the lace-up heeled boots, "Are they gone yet?" She asks and I grab hold of the blinds once more.
"I think so." I announce, turning and grabbing hold of my bag, "We'll take the stairs just to make sure."
"Really?"
"Do you want me to leave with you, or not?"
"You're so annoying." Becky moans, sliding off the desk and walking towards me as I open the door.
"Let's get this over with." I grimace as we leave, hastily pulling my flat converse out of my bag. As if I'm going to walk around town with my heels on? I just had to do that going to lunch with Alice and my feet are already feeling it.
*~*~*
"Alright. So you just pee on the stick thing and then wait three minutes." Becky reads from the box, "So I guess just take these..."
"I know how to pee on a stick." I cut her off, grabbing the tests from her hand and turning towards the bathroom. I learned my lesson after Elena's pregnancy scare back in college, Becky staring at me with confusion as I grabbed four tests from the shelf in the pharmacy.
"Happy peeing!" She calls after me. I roll my eyes at her before slamming the door and making my way to the toilet, heart hammering against my rib cage. Sitting down I shakily do the tests, before standing back up and washing my hands. I place them all face down on the counter as my heart continues to race, my stomach in knots at the thought of what I'm doing. This could change everything.
"You done?" Becky asks and I reach over, opening the door to let her in.
"Yeah." I confirm, "Can you start the timer?"
"I did it as soon as I heard you stop peeing." She grins, holding up her phone.
"You were listening at the door?" I accuse and she shrugs.
"Of course."
"What am I gonna do Bec?" I groan, leaning back against the sink. I never thought I'd be in this position, if anything I thought it would end up being the other way around, Becky having surely used up her luck on the ninety nine percent effective guarantee on contraceptives by now.
"It'll be fine Sav." She assures, reaching out and grabbing hold of my hands, "I've got you."
"But what if..."
"Don't." She cuts me off, shaking her head as she lets go and reaches up to my shoulders. "There's nothing for you to panic about." She smiles, "Everything is going to work out."
"I hope so." I mutter.
"I know so." She retorts, grabbing back onto one of my hands and squeezing. Suddenly the timer goes off and my breath catches in my throat as Becky turns it off, looking down at me and gazing into my eyes, smiling reassuringly at me. "Let's do this. Together." She says and I nod, gripping her hand tightly as I reach for the first upside down stick of plastic which will dictate my future. Curling my hand around it I feel my heart begin to hammer in my chest, stomach full of nerves.
Turning it over in my hand I bite my lip before we both look down.
