73 ~ September
"Where are we going?" I ask as we turn onto the highway in Brett's sports car, the deep thundering of the engine getting louder.
"You'll see." Brett grins at me before changing gear.
"Fine." I relent, slouching back in the seat and pouting.
"Stubborn Savannah isn't so stubborn these days, is she?" Brett teases and I can't help the small chuckle that leaves my lips.
"No." I admit, "Sometimes I don't mind not planning out our day anymore."
"You don't?" Brett exclaims, "Who are you, and what have you done with my girlfriend?"
"Shut up!" I giggle, reaching over and lightly shoving his shoulder.
I have no idea what's happened to me, or why I'm suddenly far more carefree than I ever have been before, but I have an inkling that it has something to do with my boyfriend.
*~*~*
"Edgewater Valley?" I ask as he turns off the freeway, disdain covering my features as I glance over at him.
"Trust me." Brett grins, laughing slightly at my expression.
"I'm starting to think we should have planned out our day." I reply, teasing.
"I have planned the day." He retorts and I feel my eyes widen.
"You have?"
"Yeah." He shrugs. Brett Winters, King of spontaneity and frustrating me to no end with his unorganized life, has planned out our day? What have I done to my boyfriend?
"Where are we going?" I push, not able to think of any redeemable place in Edgewater that I'd want to visit. "Brett?" I try but he ignores me once more, turning right, away from the center of town. I turn back towards the front and watch as the roads pass by, still unsure why he would drive this far just for a date. What's so special?
"Here." He announces, parking the car and immediately opening the door. I quickly follow, glancing around at the familiar woodland, a small stream babbling beside me as I smile slightly. Of course! How could I not think of this place? I was so worried about the actual town, I never thought about the beauty outside of it. Brett grabs a bag out of the trunk as I turn to look at him, a smile on my face.
"Are we..." I trail off, glancing up at the mammoth hill that faces me. "Going up..."
"Come on cheerleader." He nods towards the hill and I grimace at the old nickname. Is he serious? I'm wearing sandals today, not my trusty, sensible converse, and he didn't even warn me.
"What?" I mutter, glancing up at the steep, uneven path.
"Alright!" He huffs, smirking slightly before walking towards me. My eyes widen as he approaches quickly, picking me up, throwing me over his shoulder, the bag in his other hand.
"Brett!"
"Let's go Savvie."
"Don't call me that!" I growl out. "Put me down!" I whine and he only laughs in response, taking a step into the thick undergrowth and making his way through the forest.
I know exactly where we are headed, yet once we get there and Brett places me onto my feet I can't help but stare up at the torrent of water that gushes into the pool at its base, the sound absolutely mesmerising. The sun shines through the trees, leaving parts of the pool to sparkle every other second. This. This is my favorite place in the world.
"It's still so beautiful." I muse, watching as the water flows down.
"It is." Brett agrees, "I'm happy I shared it with you."
"Me too." I grin, turning to face him, "It always gives me peace, staring at the water."
"Come on." He nods his head towards the water and I widen my eyes as he reaches for the bottom of his top.
"What?"
"Swim." He shrugs. Oh hell no.
"No."
"Why not?" He smirks as I fiercely shake my head. He lifts his top over his head, discarding it on the floor.
"I don't have my swimming stuff!" I remind him, "You should have told me I needed it!"
"I've seen it all before!" He smirks and I roll my eyes.
"So?" I glance around at the woodland. "Someone might come up here."
"No-one is going to come up here."
"You don't know that!" I argue as he pulls his pants off. "We've been gone for a long time, this could be where the high schoolers hang out now!"
"I doubt it." He scoffs before taking a step into the water. "Come on, don't be a prude."
"I am not a prude!" I object and he grins. "How dare..."
"Prove it."
"Damn it Brett!" I groan as he takes a few extra steps in. "It's dangerous!
"It'll be fine." He assures me, "Live a little!" He lectures and I roll my eyes once more, chewing on my lip. Why is it that he knows how to wind me up and talk me into doing everything? I mean, this is exactly like the lake incident back when we were in high school. Although I had fun then...
"I hate you!" I grumble as I reach down, pulling my sandals off my feet. My jacket quickly falls next to them, followed by my black dress. He watches wordlessly, eyes unashamedly raking up and down my body.
Walking up to the edge of the water I glance up at the fast flowing waterfall, a thousand thoughts running through my brain as to why I shouldn't do this.
"Here." Brett holds out his arm to me and I quickly lower myself down, grabbing onto it, knowing that this is the only way I'll get into the water willingly. He quickly sweeps me into his arms, pulling me into the cold depths as I squeal, arms wrapping around his neck instantly. He pulls us away from the shore and into the middle, the sunlight hitting the pool of water, making it warmer. "Better?" He asks huskily.
"Better." I confirm before planting my lips on his. We stay in the water for over an hour, spending more time wrapped up together than actually swimming. Brett tries to make me stand directly under the waterfall with him but I chicken out, instead hanging back as I watch him stand underneath the water, mesmerized as I watch him.
My skin has shrivelled up more than I knew was possible by the time we climb out, Brett chucking me a towel that he's brought with us. I quickly dry myself off and pull my dress back on before turning towards Brett. His back is to me, completely shirtless and I can't help but admire the inked designs on his back, permanent reminders of our story. He's crazy for getting them but I'd be lying if I said it didn't immediately turn me on every time I lay eyes on the foreign words.
He pulls his top on quickly and turns back to face me, smirking as he notices where my eyes are focused.
"Food?" He asks and I raise an eyebrow.
"Food?"
"Yeah." He grins, reaching down and unzipping his bag, pulling out a platter of cupcakes. My eyes widen in disbelief and I take a couple of steps towards him. "Take a seat." He grins, gesturing to the fallen log beside him. I hurry over, perching down on the wood, excited by the prospect of cake as always. I watch as Brett pulls out various food, including a packet of chips and some cold pizza. He truly is a dream.
We begin to eat the food as we chat, laughing and joking with each other. Everything is so easy between us, the conversation always flowing with no filter, neither of us ever offended by anything the other has to say.
"How did it go with your parents?" I ask, neither of us having brought it up since he went.
"Surprisingly well." He relents, "There's something I have to tell you."
"Yeah?"
"They want me to do college part time." He continues, his eyes scanning my face as they look for a reaction.
"Oh?"
"So I can spend more time with family, become more involved in the business."
"Do you want to?" I ask, sitting back slightly.
"I... I don't know." He admits, "Of course I want the family that I always dreamed of having but... what if it's just lies?"
"Your Mom seems pretty sincere to me." I shrug.
"If I do it, start working for his business properly, then it means I'll have enough experience by the time I finish my degree to leave and set up alone." He comments, "Start my own business up as soon as I leave college." He smiles at the thought, "It means I'll have to study for an extra year but can you imagine?" He asks, smiling at me. "Quitting my Dad's business and making it on my own?"
"Sounds amazing." I agree.
"Mom said I can keep doing football too."
"That's great!" I exclaim and he nods slightly before his face falls somewhat. I reach over and grab hold of his hand. "Why do you look sad?"
"I'm not going to do it Sav." He shakes his head.
"Why not?"
"It's..." He trails off before sitting up straighter and staring straight into my eyes, determination running through them. "It would mean that I wouldn't be here all the time, I'd be in New York."
"We'd make it work." I assure him and he smiles sadly.
"I don't want to just 'make it work'. I want to be here with you."
"Brett..."
"I'm not doing it." He asserts, taking his hand away from mine and standing up before reaching down, beginning to chuck the small amount of leftover food back into his bag. "There's nothing you can say to change my mind."
"You literally just said how great of an opportunity it is!" I point out, standing up beside him.
"Hey!" He exclaims, leaving the bag on the floor and grabbing hold of my chin, angling it up so that he can look into my eyes. "It would be a good opportunity, I'm not going to lie. But I can stay here instead, finish my degree and then work for my Dad for a few extra years." He shrugs, "It doesn't hurt."
"You don't even want to work for him!" I argue and he smirks.
"I'll be fine." He assures, "I'm doing well there at the moment!"
"Brett..."
"Hey girlfriend." He cuts me off, "Shut up and kiss me."
"No!" I squeal as he grabs hold of my waist, pulling me towards him and spinning us around so he can pin me against a tree. "Brett!"
"I want to be with you Sav. Nothing will make me leave you." He says lowly, his body pushing into mine, effectively trapping me, his face close to mine. "So stop asking."
"I'm not going to." I argue, shaking my head.
"Your efforts are futile." He smirks, "I'm staying this close to you forever." He finishes before leaning in and capturing my mouth with his own. He lightly bites down on my lower lip as he trails a hand down the right side of my body, sending thrills straight through me. I deepen the kiss, automatically desperate to instigate something further. He moans into the kiss as I grab hold of his ass, pulling him against me and immediately feeling his excitement. "What do you think you're doing?" He asks against my lips.
"What do you think?" I reply as he slowly grinds against me.
"If we don't stop I'm going to have to take you right here..." He breathes out before smashing his lips to mine once more and letting his hand run over my breast. Pulling my lips away from his I glance up at him, biting my lip in an attempt to look seductive as his hand lowers to the hem of my dress, my breath catching in my throat.
"Then do it." I dare him and he grins dangerously before clutching at the back of my head, pulling me into another kiss as he pulls my dress up, hand moving down into my underwear.
Suddenly his phone rings and he curses, taking a step back and withdrawing his hand as he shoots me an apologetic smile before grabbing it from his pocket and answering. He takes a few steps from me, turning away slightly and I watch, curiosity eating away at me.
"What?" Brett snaps, "I can't! I'm busy." He murmurs, "I'm in Edgewater Valley." He continues and I bite my lip, seeing where this is going. "No." He argues and I shuffle slightly on my feet. I guess the date is over. "Fine." He hisses before pulling the phone away from his ear and swearing, shoving the device back in his pocket.
"Everything okay?" I ask and he turns to face me, remorse filling his features.
"I'm so sorry Sav." He takes a step back towards me, reaching out and cupping my face, "I have to go. There's some kind of emergency with this deal that's coming up." He sighs, "Dad's not listening to me."
"It's fine."
"Are you sure?" He asks, worry filling his features.
"Yeah." I assure him, smiling. "I'll hang back. Go see Elle and get the train back later."
"Are you sure?"
"Of course." I wrap my arms around him. It isn't his fault that his Dad is a demanding arsehole. "I've had an amazing day with you."
"I wish I could spend longer with you." He replies, grabbing hold of my waist and resting his head against my forehead.
"I know!" I grin, teasing him slightly.
"I'm going to be busy over the next month." He admits, taking a step back. "One of our biggest clients is coming over from France. We're hoping to strike another big deal with him." Brett continues, "I may have to help out a lot." He explains, shooting me an apologetic look.
"As long as you make sure to save some time to see me that's okay!" I giggle.
"Always!" He grins, sweeping me closer into his chest and lowering his head to lay a kiss on my neck.
One day this will all be worth it.
