72 ~ September
The other team is up by seven points. There are seconds left on the clock and the entire Christlington University watches with bated breath as Brett runs forward, the ball under his arm as he heads for the end zone. Scoring a touchdown the crowd erupts into cheers, my hands resting by my mouth as the nerves eat away at my sanity.
Pete steps up, grabbing hold of the ball as the team lines up for a field goal, my heart now racing in my chest as Polly grabs hold of my hand, squeezing it tightly. Suddenly Pete passes the ball to Brett, faking the snap as the crowd erupts into shrieks. Brett catches it effortlessly, running to the end zone and managing to score the extra two points for the win as the buzzer goes.
Brett looks up at the stand, his eyes finding mine. I squeal as he sees me, reaching up and cheering louder as he laughs, gesturing for me to leave the stand and meet him. I grin and nod, dropping my foam finger as Elena, Louise and Polly smirk and giggle, pointing for me to go.
I run down the length of the stand, my hair flying out behind me as I grin, finding my way to the stairs and running down them. Brett meets me at the bottom and we collide instantly, his arms wrapping around me and lifting me up as I squeal.
"I did it!" He exclaims before stepping back and grinning down at me.
"I knew you would." I retort and his grin widens before he grabs hold of my chin, crushing his lips to mine. The stadium is still erupting in cheers, the losing team having left the field already, their supporters also draining out of the stadium. Reluctantly pulling away Brett rests his forehead against mine, his breath ragged as he smiles. I smile back, perfectly happy in the tiny world to which we've become accustomed.
Finally letting go of me, he turns slightly, his eyes widening at the sight. I quickly follow his gaze, my mouth opening slightly in disbelief at the sight of the pristine Winters parents, stood awkwardly, smiling slightly. What the hell?
"Mom. Dad." He lets out, eyes wide. I let go of him, startled that his Mom actually came, let alone the fact that she managed to get his Dad here. What is happening?
"Son." His Dad greets, nodding slightly.
"You came!" Brett exclaims, still frozen in place.
"Of course!" Olivia smiles, taking a step closer and giving Brett a quick hug. He barely has time to react before she steps back. "You did so well out there!"
"She's right." George agrees and Brett's eyes widen. I think someone needs to come and help me lift my jaw off the ground.
"T-Thanks." He manages to stutter out.
"I'm proud of you Brett." Olivia beams.
"You are?"
"Of course!" She gushes, gesturing around at the stadium. "You've got talent."
"I don't know what to say." Brett shifts on his feet, clearly unsure of how to react to his suddenly caring parents.
"You were right Savannah." Olivia turns her attention to me with a smile. "I'm not going to be missing another game."
"Sav?" Brett queries, glancing down at me, confused.
"Will you come over tomorrow Brett?" Olivia exclaims, giving me time to attempt to cultivate a justification as to why I didn't tell him I spoke with his Mom last week, "Alice really wants to see you. We could have a family dinner."
"Uh, sure." Brett agrees, slightly reluctantly. "Savannah and I will be there..."
"I'm busy." I quickly interrupt, "Elena wanted me to go... to this... thing with her."
"Oh!" Brett furrows his eyebrows at me before turning back to his parents, "Okay. I'll be there."
"See you tomorrow!" Olivia squeals slightly, clapping her hands together before hesitantly walking away.
"Good job out there." George nods his head before turning and following his Mom out the stadium. Brett stares after them, clearly unsure how to comprehend the fact that his parents have attended his game, and that they want to see him.
"Wha..." He manages and I bite my lip, uncertain of how to help him, how to act in a situation that I never thought I'd be in.
"Should we leave?" I ask and he nods quickly.
"Uh yeah." He agrees, "I'll get my stuff." He mutters before walking off towards the building.
"Okay!" I call after him, slouching down into the seat behind me. Shit. I should have told Brett that his Mom spoke to me but I just didn't think it was any of my business to get involved. I never planned on telling Brett to study part-time, or move to New York as his Mother so clearly wanted me to do, so telling him seemed obsolete.
Except that now, I'm screwed.
*~*~*
We stay silent the entire journey home, his grip tight on the steering wheel, knuckles white. I look down at my lap the entire time, biting my lip as I twirl my silver ring around my finger. It's a tense atmosphere and I'm relieved when we finally get out of the car and walk into my college house, up the stairs and into my room, shutting the door behind us.
"What did you say to my Mom?" He blurts out instantly and I turn away from the door to face him.
"Don't get angry!" I plead and he raises an eyebrow.
"Angry?"
"She rang me a week ago." I admit, "Asked me to go over there."
"Why?" He scoffs.
"She just wanted to talk."
"About?" He presses and I walk passed him, slouching down onto the bed and looking up at him.
"How she wants to make more of an effort with you." I explain, "See you more." I continue and he rolls his eyes. "Fix the divide in your family."
"She actually said that?" He asks, sitting down next to me. "Wow." He breathes out. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"As I said to her, it's nothing to do with me. It's up to you."
"You still should have told me."
"I know." I smile softly, gently nudging his shoulder. He shoots me a small smile and I instantly know that he is not angry at me, not one bit. Relief floods through me.
"I can't believe they came to my game." He shakes his head, looking over towards my legendary pink clock.
"Me neither." I agree, reaching over and placing a hand on his back.
"Why aren't you coming tomorrow?" He queries, sitting up and shooting me a confused look. My hand slips off of his back.
"I have to help Elena..."
"No you don't." He cuts me off. "Tell me the truth."
"Look, your Mom is trying to make an effort with the family. You need to do this on your own." I shrug, "She deserves a chance." I point out and he grimaces. "I'd give anything to have my parents back Brett." I exclaim, "Let yours try and make it up to you at least."
"Fine." He gives in, reaching over and wrapping an arm around me, pulling me in and laying a kiss on my forehead.
"Movie night?" I ask, raising my eyebrows at him in anticipation as he nods.
"What are we watching?"
"It's my turn to pick!" I remind him, shooting out of his arms and standing up.
"No it isn't!" He protests.
"Yes it is, you made me watch Alien last week!"
"You enjoyed it!"
"Doesn't matter!" I snort, "It's still my choice!"
"Fine." He groans, lying back against the pillows and placing an arm behind his head. "What do you pick?"
"A Cinderella Story." I say without hesitation. I mean come on, it was every girls dream to have Austin be their Prince when they were twelve. I used to force Elle to watch it with me and she'd roll her eyes as I talked through the entire thing, pointing out every little detail. My sister put up with a lot.
"Sounds awful." Brett moans and I giggle. He's gonna hate it.
"You haven't seen it?"
"No."
"This just got a whole lot better!"
"Are you trying to torture me?" Brett whines as I turn my TV on. I grin.
"You chose to have me as your girlfriend!" I shrug, "That gave me authority to force you to watch chick flicks."
"I'm seriously reconsidering this relationship!"
"Shut up!" I retort, grabbing hold of one of my pillows and chucking it over his face as he laughs. Grabbing hold of my waist he pulls me back onto the bed, laughing as I start the film. Grabbing hold of a blanket he pulls it over the two of us, pulling my body flush against his.
We stay quiet the entire film and I find myself enjoying it more than I thought I would, not watching it for seven years having caused me to forget how cheesy the sisters are, how cliché the romance is. Every now and again this is what a girl needs, a soppy, feel good romance.
"What did you think?" I ask as soon as the credits roll, turning to face Brett.
"Well it was pretty shit."
"What?" I whine as he smirks.
"Compared to our story." He elaborates and I furrow my eyebrows.
"Our story?"
"Yeah." His smirks widens. "You were a far more annoying Diner Girl than she was." He continues, "But I still prefer you. Even though your service was pretty poor." He teases.
"Hey!" I exclaim, grabbing hold of the pillow once more and repeatedly bringing it down over his head as he begins to laugh.
"Fuck off Diner Girl!" He chuckles and I bring the pillow down on his head harder. I definitely chose the wrong movie. Next time I'll choose Harry Potter. Surely there's no way he can manipulate anything in that film to make fun of me?
Wrapping an arm around my waist he quickly pulls me on top of him. I fall onto his chest, the pillow falling out of my hands as I glance up at him through my lashes, my gaze falling onto his hypnotic blue eyes. His hands tighten around my waist, pressing my body against him. I can feel his sudden erection and my breath hitches in my throat. I slowly start to move against him, unable to resist, the wetness already pooling between my thighs.
"Sav..." He moans out and I bite my lip, grinning as I lean down to kiss him. Our lips meet in the middle, an explosion of sudden desire erupting between us as I move my leg over to straddle him. He grins into my mouth at the action and I take the opportunity to run my hands along his upper arms, feeling his muscles tense as he reaches up to my waist. "I meant every word. You'll always be my Diner Girl." He smirks and I immediately spring back, grabbing hold of the pillow once more and whacking it down onto his head as he laughs.
Arrogant jerk!
