34 ~ Month Ten: September

"Sorry we're late!" Becky sings, pulling me into Chris' cabin.

"Thought you weren't coming!" Ben grins, immediately handing me a drink.

"Becky couldn't decide on which dress would leave a better impression on you." I explain.

"I certainly won't be forgetting that one in a hurry." Ben replies, glancing up and down Becky's laced up purple mini dress. She looks incredible.

"Then I chose correctly." She grins.

"Sav!" Zara bounds up, smiling widely, "Becky, wow!"

"Thank you!"

"I thought you would never get here!" Zara exclaims.

"Tell me about it." I roll my eyes and Becky tuts. "Where's Georgia?"

"I'm not sure, she's around somewhere." Zara replies, craning her head to analyse the room. Ben starts talking to the guy beside him, disappearing back off into the crowd.

"She's always disappearing." Becky smirks, "I wonder if she has a secret man."

"Georgia? Definitely not." Zara objects.

"You never know." Becky shrugs. "The ones who scream the loudest are usually doing it themselves."

"Georgia would tell us." I counter.

"Alright." Becky gives in, grabbing a cup out of someone's hand as they walk past.

"Wow!" Ellis struts over, his eyes wide. "Becky are you sure you don't wanna head upstairs? One time before I go off to college?"

"The offer is tempting Ellis." Becky smirks. "But knowing that you want me, but can't have me is enough."

"You drive me wild." Ellis flirts, leaning against the wall as he looks down at her.

"I aim to please." She retorts.

"Alright then! Here's a couple more drinks girls!" Ben returns, a tray in front of him. Becky grabs the shot nearest to her and Zara and I hesitate, each grabbing a red colored drink.

"Thanks!" I smile gratefully at Ben.

"Wow, everyone is drunk already!" Becky states, her eyes wide. I turn, taking in the room of drunk teenagers who are drinking, dancing, singing and making out.

"It is ten? Not our fault you got here so late." Ellis points out bluntly.

"I suppose." Becky relents, "Guess I'll need another drink." She exclaims, grinning. I don't know how this girl can drink so much, honestly, she'll down a whole can of beer in ten minutes, do five shots in a row and she'll down a bottle of wine at our movie nights, never, ever throwing it up. Zara, Georgia and I can drink less than half of what she does. She's blessed.

"Hell, we're off to College this month! We're getting ready by drinking." Ellis declares.

"You do realize that college is more than just drinking?" Zara laughs.

"Well it's all I'm gonna be doing." Ellis grins, shrugging.

"No surprises there." Becky snorts.

"So Ellis, you're going where?" I ask, changing the subject as I sip the red drink, a relatively pleasant taste spreading through my mouth.

"University of Southern California."

"Not that far away then." Becky notes, nodding.

"No." Ellis nods. "You can always visit me Becky."

"Thanks for the offer." Becky scoffs, shaking her head as she chuckles.

"And Ben?"

"University of Washington in Seattle." He answers, smiling.

"Wow." Zara exclaims.

"That's far!" I blurt out.

"That's going to be cold." Becky remarks, taking another sip of her drink.

"I fancied a change." He shrugs, smiling. Wow, I wish I had the confidence to move that far away. It would be different if my parents were alive. There's no way I can leave Elle all by herself.

"Good for you!" I exclaim, lightly shoving his shoulder.

"Becky... I..." Chris walks up to us, his eyes on the same girl as always.

"Not tonight Chris." Becky tries, smiling softly at him.

"I... Uh..."

"Come on Chris, let's find the guys." Ben interrupts, placing his arm around Chris' shoulders and leading him away.

"Becky..."

"I know! But I just can't reject him again!" Becky cuts Zara off, putting her head in her hands.

"He's got it bad for you." Ellis notes, looking after Chris and Ben.

"It's for the best that he's leaving!" Becky retorts.

"Bec..."

"He's harmless. But he needs to change the record. I'm not that great a catch!" She argues, holding her arms up.

"Oh but you are!" I argue, wrapping my arm around her as I drink.

"Thanks babe!" She grins, Ellis shaking his head at us before walking off.

"Fancy going shopping next week before school starts?" Becky asks us.

"Definitely!" Zara grins.

"What day? I have a couple of shifts at the diner..."

"It's back open?" Becky asks.

"They never shut." I grimace.

"Did they let you have time off?"

"Well no but..."

"Sav!"

"You're better than that place." Becky protests.

"I know." I reply, bored with the same argument that I have with everyone. "But..."

"I'm sure you could find a better job elsewhere." Becky exclaims, smiling.

"I'm off on Tuesday. We could go shopping then." I change the subject back, smiling widely at them both.

"Sounds like a plan." Zara agrees. "Are you ready to go back to school?"

"Zara why do you have to remind us!" Becky groans.

"One more year." She grins, crossing her arms.

"Whilst all of these lot will be living their best life at university." Becky gestures, her face glum.

"That'll be us next year." I remind her, "Hopefully."

"You'll smash it Sav." Becky grins, nudging my shoulder. "I can see it now, you walking around Stanford campus, books in your hand, coffee in the other as you rush over to your lecture."

I smile at the thought, the idea of walking through that beautiful campus, straight towards a lecture. Then afterwards I could go to the library, get out all the books I need for that week and study for a few hours. When it starts to get dark I would head back to my dorm room and do some work.

And I could meet up with Brett. We could walk around campus together, both carrying our books, both racing to our lectures. Kissing goodbye before we go into them and telling each other we'll meet up later.

"I'll be right back." I announce, handing the rest of my drink to Becky. "I'm going to find Brett."

"Okay." Zara smiles and I turn away, looking through the crowds to see if I can find his familiar face. I make my way through the cabin, ending up in the games room spotting Ben and Chris and walking over as Ben steps back from the pool table.

"Ben, have you seen Brett?" I ask, and Ben nods.

"Hey! You can't go around here without a drink Diner Girl!" Liam calls out, shoving a plastic cup into my hand.

"Thanks." I laugh, taking a big gulp as I look back at Ben.

"Last I saw, he went into the first room at the top of the stairs."

"Thanks." I smile walking past him and back into the main living area. I make my way slowly through the drunk, dancing crowd, grabbing hold of the handrail at the bottom of the stairs.

"Hey Diner Girl!" A high pitched, feminine voice interrupts and I turn around on the first step, looking down to find the tanned cheerleader, her arms crossed.

"Phoebe." I greet, crossing my own arms to mimic her. She stares up at me, her lips pursed into a thin line. "Can I help you?"

"I just want you to know that Ashley isn't going to make your last year easy." She smirks and I roll my eyes.

"I don't count on it."

"You've been warned." She continues.

"Thanks Phoebe." I smirk, "Go find Ashley now. Tell her that I'm quaking in my boots."

"You're what?" She furrows her eyebrows, confusion clouding her features. I shake my head before turning and skipping up the stairs one at a time.

I finish my drink and place the cup on the  nearby table, grimacing as the funny tasting liquid hits my tongue, swallowing it quickly and wiping my mouth with the back of my hand, quickly glancing into the mirror above the table.

I've made more of an effort today, slipping into a blue summer dress, my wavy shoulder length hair pinned up, away from my face. Becky lined my eyes with black liner, swept some bronzer across my cheeks and dabbled with some eyeshadow across my eyelids.

I don't look bad at all.

I tuck a loose strand of hair behind my ear and turn back to the long length of doorways down the corridor. I reach for the door handle of the closest one, smiling. "Brett?" I call as I push the door open quickly and take a step forward.

It's a bedroom.

The couple spring apart, his hand slowly slipping back out from under her pink top, their lips disconnecting as they glance over at me.

Her eyes are wide as they take me in.

His eyes fill with shock and regret.

Brett and Georgia.

"You... I... What the hell?" I stutter speechless.

What the fucking hell?

"Sav..." Brett takes a step towards me, stumbling as he holds his arm out.

"Don't Sav me!" I take a step back, my voice rising, "Are you fucking serious?" I scoff, falling back against the table at the top of the stairs.

"I-it wasn't supposed to happen."

"That makes it okay then!" I snap before running my hand across my mouth in disbelief.

"We were just talking and..."

"And you stuck your tongue down her throat?" I scoff, crossing my arms as I turn away.

"Sav..." Her voice is meek and small and I whirl back around, seeing red.

"Shut up Georgia."

"Calm down." Brett holds his arms out, stepping in front of Georgia. Is he protecting her? From me?

"Calm down?!" I yell balling my hands into fists, "How could you do this? Do you even care about me at all?"

"You know I do."

"Absolutely fucking not!" I argue, "I know nothing! You treat me like fucking shit Brett!" I continue, stepping forward and pushing his chest, watching as he stumbles back, "You literally just cheated on me and you expect me..."

"Cheated on you?" He cuts me off, his eyes wide as I take a step back. "You aren't even my girlfriend!" He objects, arms raised as I feel my heart split into a thousand pieces. I grit my teeth and whirl around, marching back down the stairs.

I can't believe him.

So I really never meant a thing to him. Not one thing. He never cared, he never liked me. I was a play thing, for use when he was bored.

At the bottom of the stairs I grab hold of the shirt of the first guy I see, a young football player, immediately pulling his lips to mine. The guy is shocked, but soon responds, placing his arms around my waist as I lean up to deepen the kiss.

"Get the fuck away from him Savannah!" Brett growls from behind me, the guy immediately springing back, looking fearfully behind me at Brett. I whirl around, anger driving away all heartbreak from my mind, adrenaline fueling me.

Brett stands behind me, top two buttons of his shirt undone, his eyes full of fire, pupils dilated as he watches me.

"Don't fucking tell me what to do!" I hiss before heading straight for the front door.

"S-Savannah..." he calls out behind me as I descend the steps and begin to walk across the grass towards the road.

"Stay away from me Brett." I yell, not daring to look back.

"I don't get why you're so fucking upset." He bellows and I stop dead in the middle of the grass, turning back around to face him.

"Me neither." I say with a calmness I didn't know I had, "You aren't worth it."

"Grow up." He scoffs, running his hand through his hair.

That action ten minutes ago would have made me melt inside.

"Don't tell me to grow up." I argue, "If anyone needs to fucking grow up, it's you!" I snap, "Prancing around like you fucking own the place. Who the hell do you think you are?" I take a step towards him, gesturing at him. "You're nothing Brett."

"Jealousy doesn't suit you."

"Go fuck yourself." I yell, taking another step back. Suddenly another thought trickles into my mind and I gasp slightly, my eyes tearing up slightly.

"How many times have you kissed Georgia? Have you had sex?" I ask, dreading the answer.

"No! God no, it was only tonight!" He shakes his head, taking a step towards me, his eyes begging me to believe him. Well that's something I guess...

"I hope it was worth it." I snap, my voice cracking as I begin to break. I turn away, desperate to get away from him.

"I don't see what the problem is here, we were never exclusive." Brett tries, raising his hand in a surrender. I feel the anger seek out of my features as I stare at him in disbelief, dropping my hands to my sides.

"But you led me to believe we were."

"I never..."

"Alright, well you sure made me feel like maybe I was someone special." I retort.

"Y-you are..."

"Don't spout that shit to me," I scoff, wrapping my arms around myself, "I'm clearly not so go fuck the brains out of my best friend," I yell before turning and taking a few steps away.

My best friend.

He was with my best friend. The girl I've been friends with for years. Did neither of them think about me? Did neither of them care?

"God!" I scream and turn back towards him, "My fucking best friend Brett! What the hell is wrong with you?"

"Alright I'll admit that part is pretty bad..." Brett mumbles, running his hands through his hair.

I see red.

"Do you hear yourself?" I yell, taking a step towards him. "That part is 'pretty bad'?! Over a year ago I told myself that you were a self-righteous spoilt dickhead who cared for no-one but himself. I was so fucking right."

"Give it up Hurst." He scoffs, "Acting all fucking innocent, I never heard you saying no." He continues, taking a step towards me. "Not once." He chuckles, lowly. "In fact most of the time all you were doing was begging me for it."

I take one more step towards him before raising my hand and slapping him. His face whips to the side, his jaw taut as he glares back at me, eyes full of anger and regret.

"I wish I'd never met you," I whisper, my resolve slowly breaking.

"Same," he responds, his voice emotionless.

I take a step backwards before whirling around, my hand flying to my mouth as I try to control the sobs that erupt from my mouth, the tears streaming down my face as I march away from the cabin and down towards the main road.
