"Hey can we get something to eat or drink, I'm starving," groans erupted from everyone on the bus in agreement.Glad to hear I'm not the only one who feels like their stomach is caving in.
Our bus driver, a balding middle aged man with a giant mane of a beard stays silent like he has the entire journey.Looks like we aren't eating anything anytime soon.
The pouring torrential rain patters on the roof of the bus as we continue the journey in silence. For how long it has been raining I do not know all I know is that I woke up thinking we were getting shot at by how loud the rain was and it still is, it's probably the reason I even woke up in the first place.
I usually liked settings like this, me in a car after a long trip all cozy and warm inside while the skies open their floodgates and if I'm lucky reading a book in the backseat with the slight sound of the radio in the background. It's very aesthetic as some would say but currently it was anything but because firstly the rain wasn't calm at all it was even accompanied by it's good friend and confidante, the occasional thunderstorm.Secondly need I bring up the fact that the fate of our entire lives are at stake? It isn't really something that sets the mood and thirdly I'm in a bus full of children both literally and figuratively.
My hair has been pulled thrice in the short time that I've been awake and every time I whipped around to ask the two menaces which one of them is pulling my hair they start snickering as if they made the funniest joke of their lives. If they tug on my hair one more time I'd have to do some pulling of my own.Damn you'd think being in this kind of situation would tone everyone down but as the old adage goes boys will indeed be boys.
Of course I could've tried to get Blake to deal with them but the asshat was asleep. How dare he sleep when I couldn't. It wasn't really fair that he gets to sleep through this much of the journey when I couldn't. His head was tilted off to the left, the hat part of the hoodie he was wearing had somehow come off during his deep slumber exposing the soft slight curls of his hair.I debated running my hand through them for the sole purpose of annoying him but come on what kind of monster would I be to have to wake someone trying to sleep through this trash journey.
I had tried to fall back asleep several times but it proved very futile so far.The seats were inclined in a literal ninety degree angle making it almost impossible to properly rest.It was a wonder how Blake hadn't already awoken from back pains.I looked out the window into the dark and tried to catch sight of anything, a sign,a building anything to give an indication of where we currently were but the night yielded nothing from it's grasp leaving me in total obliviousness. All I knew is that we haven't been given a score for our physical appeal or in simpler words our 'sexiness'.
I felt the bus starting to move upwards and for the first time since I woke up I saw some light outside the bus.We passed by a street light, then another one.I was surprised since we hadn't seen any for miles. This could only mean one thing, we were officially off of the normal and badly damaged roads left behind after the war I could even see walls and pillars on both sides of the bus as we went up we could actually be on the-
As the bus reached the top of the inclines my suspicions we proved correct from all sides dozens upon dozens of buses came out from the darkness as if they were being made out of thin air.I should've thought of this before I mean they had to somehow get all of us together before we got there. We were currently driving on the great intersection. It somehow connects tons of roads from different locations in our province. Each of the three provinces has one used for this specific purpose it isn't like they'd be used for any other purpose either way since not that many people have access to any sort of vehicle anymore, my dad does own a car but it's old and beaten up.
He bought it before the war began and had somehow managed to keep it safe from theft during and some time after the war.The country was in total chaos then, food was scarce and expensive, people would do anything to get their hands on some cash and one of those things was stealing car parts to sell to buyers. The only place that probably has other uses for these intersections was probably Altum or as the locals like to call it 'The High Place'. It's the home to the very best of the best and when I say best I mean the Eights and up.That's where everyone important is, the celebrities, the actors, the singers, the Kings you name it they're up there. They get the best of everything, the best food, the best clothes, high tech devices, advanced medicine and of course cars, they have everything up there all because they happened to have good genetic traits, being the so called 'Children of the future'.It isn't exactly fair but then again life isn't.
As for Humilis God bless them because who knows what they go through down there. If I think I've had it bad they've probably had it ten times worse.Poverty,starvation...the war is over for the rest of us but for them it's a daily thing. It is a war between the government and it's very own people.Only 3s and down are there and the conditions they live in are purposely made by the government in some sick ploy to kill them off.I don't even think they're allowed to procreate. We do not speak of them, partly because we all know deep down that we're living in our little bubbles and doing nothing all while knowing there are people who need our help. It's called guilt, if you allow it to take root it eats away at your soul so....you learn to avoid it and we avoid it.
Then there's us, Mediocris.Have you ever heard of the words In Between, Average, Ok, Medium? That's us in a nutshell, 4 up to 7.This means everything is just...enough.The food is enough, the level education is good enough and so forth.Nothing too much like Altum but nothing too little like Humilis just enough to sustain a normal life.Smart enough, pretty enough you get the gist it's kinda boring but miles better than being down there.
Multiple 'wows' and 'woahs' erupted in the bus and I couldn't blame them, I was in awe too.The many headlights of the accompanying buses lit up the giant space of the highway, we all probably looked like a swarm of little yellow fireflies from a distance, lighting up the way and moving in perfect unison.
This really made it hit home that this was actually happening.I turned to wake up Blake so he could see this spectacular sight but I was surprised he was already up and looking out the window too. "Look who finally decided to wake up." I said with a smile on face "Couldn't miss this for the world, I've never seen anything like this." He said elatedly. It was nice to see everyone sort of happy for a change at least for a little.
A bus came right up next to us, in the lane to our right, also packed with other teens from a different location. In the faint light of their bus I could make out their hands moving side to side...they were waving at us.
I quickly waved back and everyone else did the same.Blake contorted his face trying to make a funny face which caught the attention of a few girls in the other bus causing them to giggle. It wasn't even actually funny it's probably because they thought he was hot.
It was nice, everyone didn't look like they were about to jump off a cliff for the first time since we set off, probably because it just hit us that we weren't alone in this, we were going through this traumatic part of our lives together and somehow that made it the slightest bit bet-
My head jerked back as my hair was pulled again.I felt an all consuming anger take over me.I'll show those incels who's boss.
"Ok which one of you fuckers just almost ripped my hair out of my scalp?" As expected they started snickering to each other.
"Answer me!" I raised my voice higher which caught the attention of a few of the people aboard. They started snickering again and right before I opened my mouth to ask again one of them decided to speak up "Sorry, it's my friend he has a condition you have to understand hi-"
"Understand the palm of my hand you little rat!" without a second thought I landed a hard smack on his cheek.
