Chapter Four: The Forever Growing Chain
After first period had concluded, the halls were loaded with students. As most people were getting to class, there was a corner full of jocks. They were talking about what their future plans were for their friend's birthday party. It was weeks away, but the planning had to be taken care of. They could not leave any clues. Not only would it ruin the surprise, it would squash everything else they had up their sleeves.
"A clown?" Tedd asked.
"Who the heck wants a clown at their party, man? Their scary." Sam answered back.
"Your scared of clowns?" DeMarco questioned.
"Yeah! After IT, I can't look at clowns anymore. They'd kill me." Same told him.
DeMarco shook his head.
"Alright, back to the party. We definitely need ice cream." Coby mentioned.
"And cake." Rico added.
"Dude, we already planned the cake. Why do we need more?" Henry inquired.
"You can't have too much cake." Rico responded.
Their conversation continued on as a certain freshman was in their vicinity. He took another glance at the list. The next person on there was one that he'd rather not speak to. Unfortunately, he was the person his girlfriend needed the most. With a sigh, he made his way over to the varsity team.
"And what about music?" Tedd threw in.
"DJ Live Rats bro. I booked him." DeMarco notified.
"Man, this party is gonna be lit!" Sam exclaimed.
Wade nodded with a smile. That's when he felt another presence. He looked up to see who it was.
"Wade."
He was smiling, which made the jock curious. The fifteen year old sat down next to him.
"Hi." Ryan greeted.
"Um...hi?" Wade replied.
"What do you want little Walker?" Rico asked.
"Nothing you have to worry about. Wade, let's talk." Ryan responded.
Wade raised an eyebrow.
"Why would I wanna talk to you?" He posed.
"Because I have something you might be interested in. Could be VERY valuable to you in the future." Ryan retorted.
Wade crossed his arms.
"How valuable?" He queried.
"Let's just say you would love it." Ryan answered back.
The leader of the jock clan smiled a bit.
"I'm listening." Wade told him.
The pilot got up from his spot. He gestured for the varsity captain to follow. He shrugged and came, leaving his friends in the corner. They all glanced at one another. As the two made their way down the hall, another one of the members of the team was upstairs. He had came from advanced chemistry and had some time before the bell rung. While he was walking, he was surprisingly greeted by one of his friends. His sudden presence scared him.
"Hey! There's something I gotta tell you." Spyder said.
"What did I tell you? Don't be Leo." Harris replied.
Spyder shoved that to the side.
"Remember when you said that something weird was going on?" He asked.
Harris nodded.
"Well, I think I just saw Ryan making a deal with Danny." Spyder informed him.
"What kind of deal?" Harris inquired.
"Ry said that Ryley needed metal for something. He bribed Danny with a Wawa gift card." Spyder explained.
"Metal? Why would they need metal?" Harris wondered.
Spyder shrugged.
"Ask them. I think it could be a machine." He guessed.
The two began walking again.
"It could be. This is weird. If the metal is for a machine, then what are they building?" Harris posed.
"Dude, I have no clue. I'm just mad that he gave Danny the gift card. It had $50 on it man! I could've had sandwiches for weeks." Spyder whined.
Harris shook his head. He glanced down below the stairs. His attention shifted to the doors. The young genius saw something that caused his curiosity to sky rocket. Why was the bully and big time jock at the school talking to their friend? It didn't seem like they were going to fight or spew out insults. It looked like a normal conversation. The well dressed young man now could confirm something was off.
"Yeah...no." Wade told him.
Ryan crossed his arms.
"Come on man. It's not even that hard and I can't find anyone else to do it." He replied.
"You really want me to buy oil, matches, and steel?" Wade questioned.
Ryan nodded.
"Your out of your mind little Walker." Wade stated.
He attempted to walk away. The male technopath pulled him back.
"Ok ok ok. Look, I said you would get something in return." Ryan mentioned.
"Right. And what is it?" Wade inquired.
The fifteen year old took a moment to think. He actually didn't plan on getting the jock something. He only said that to get him to listen. That's when an idea snuck into his brain. He smiled.
"You want a 1000 bucks?" Ryan posed.
The jock's mouth dropped to the floor.
"1000 bucks?!" He asked.
"Mmm hmm." Ryan answered.
Wade nodded.
"Yeah deal!" He agreed.
"Good. Ryley has all the details. She'll let you know where to bring it." Ryan informed him.
The varsity captain immediately went to go and figure this out. The freshman watched him leave. A small smirk appeared on his face. He turned back around and took out his list. He proceeded to cross the jock's name off. His eyes went down another line. He didn't have lots of people to go to. However, the remaining bunch were the people closest to him. The pilot sighed.
"Veracity." Ryan read silently.
He put the mini notebook back in his pocket. As he carried on, his two best friends viewed from above. They exchanged glances and turned away.
"You think he made another deal?" Spyder questioned.
"Yes. You saw one with Danny, now he did one with Wade. Something's going on and I don't know what it is. We should investigate." Harris suggested.
"Don't you think Ryan will think that we think that he's doing something bad? Like we're accusing him?" Spyder quizzed.
Harris was about to answer, but his buddy had a thought cross his mind.
"Woah, I never used the word think so many times." Spyder realized.
Harris shook his head.
"I didn't say it was bad. I just wanna know what's up. This isn't just some kind of project. It feels like an invention of some sort." Harris hypothesized.
"K, so if it's an invention, then it's not that bad. So, we can leave this alone." Spyder decided.
Harris crossed his arms.
"No. This is Ryley we're talking about. She takes things and makes it unbelievable. She's unpredictable." He told him.
"And this is Ryan we're talking about. If he wanted us to know, he would've said it. I know V told you to start digging, but how deep are we gonna dig?" Spyder queried.
"Just until we get an answer. It's not like I'm stealing information or trying to hurt someone." Harris answered back.
Spyder sighed. He peeked at the handle bars before deciding.
"Alright, where do we start?" Spyder wondered.
